"Unscheduled learning opportunities" - best possible way to look at things and keep moving forward. Thank you for all of your great work, you guys rock! :-)
@@hc8714 Luckily, Boyan and the other good people working with the ocean cleanup project don't have the 'yea right' attitude. They're trying to make the world a better place. Consider adjusting your attitude- if you don't try, things won't get better. If you do- they might, and at least you'll know you tried.
@@roselieber Well it's not about "yea, right" it's about knowledge. They could a least learn simple oceanography, this 20 m parachute, will not work for simple physical reasons. Looks like a drift anchor, but it won't turn the platform, not on that side anyways, it's not how they work. Also, the sea is always irregular, you need to monitor it, always, in real time, that's why we still have sailors on ships. Good luck too the guy stationed on él Wilson in open sea. The construction in it self is a whole other story, why and how it wont work would be too long to explain. It will keep breaking, like another sailor said. You might not get hit by a car in the road, but if you learn about traffic, your chances of not getting hurt are better, and sorry to say all the information is online, you can even learn it for free, it's quite easy for a layman to approach. Did you know that some of these plastic islands now are home to animals, that they are depended of them for protection, rest and breeding? They seem to think they can be alone there, and he/they want to remove them, are we going to take that habitat from them too, why are they there in the first place? That also is another side to this. Doing the right thing is better than doing an underinformed thing, just to do something is for urgent situations, this is not urgent and will not solve the problem and as long as the oceans are connected, this would have to be done by all countrys at the same time in good conditions, oh an all plastic on land replaced also, even then it would only collect about 2% of the total mass of plastic in the oceans, at that specific point in time and you can't sift the whole ocean. One hurricane somewhere and there will be plastic in the ocean again, one ship sinks, the same. It's not uphill it's more like vertical. This, at best will make coastal regions look "prettier" at the surface. Pro-tip, it's not the surface that's the problem, it's the attitude about the problem that is. I can not believe the low competence advice he must be getting, sad actually, he had drive and with good advice from competent people it probably would be another story. But this might end with "at least we tried", yeah but that made others, not try, or they were not heard although that idea was better to begin with. Boyan buddy, System 001/B out of 999/Z? Are you even open to information at this point? You look...bummed. There's still hope, but 001 is not The One, try peer review.
Still no footage of this “garbage patch” that they claim is “3 times the size of Texas”. Just more begging for money and making up excuses as to why their alleged “solution” didn’t work. Here’s a hint, you can’t “clean up” something that isn’t there.
@@daffymore You realize that if we just didn't dump plastic in the oceans, it wouldn't matter how much plastic we use, as long as we dispose of it gooder.

Thank you for the update! Good clarification on if the system goes faster or slower than the plastic. As an experienced sailor, that sea anchor needs to be weighted down enough so it doesn't surface and deform the chute and be fouled. It should be weighted by a chain with a swivel attached. Do not use stainless steel chain, it is too brittle due to it being underwater and under constant stress.
I am so glad i accidentally bumped into he videos of this project. This is definitively one of the most important ongoing projects, in the World, right now! Having worked on fluid flow CFD. I can tell you that grid calculations on such a system although useful will be no match to a scaled experiment which is what they seem to be doing here. Empirical experiments go hand in hand with CFD calculations. They seem to be doing things the right way IMHO.
At the tips of the U shape add solar panels and water propellers to regulate the overall speed. Battery storage could even be used to store the energy from slowing down the unit using the water propellers as controllable drag. Keep gong, great work. Thank you for cleaning up our mess.
Thanks so much for the idea! Based on our data and simulations, it is possible to design the system to be completely passive. Adding solar powered propulsions/ ocean renewable energy sources would require a large amount of solar panels in order to move technology of our size (this would also impact the weight of the system). It would also add quite a bit of complexity and would require ongoing control software and technology maintenance. However, it is not out of the question.
