What facility? No one gives a shit and for sure no one wants to pay to treat these nutjobs. Those Facilities you talk about are hella expensive and there is too few of them. Steve should have been Committed. At least until he could be stabilized with meds/ECT The Deputy should have gone for medical attention and doing so should be policy in every department. This was 100% preventable

yeah this was a very strange scenario, 100% all of them knew he was out of his mind whether it was self induced delirium (seemed like is an abuser of embalming fluids or wet) - kind of despicable but realistically some areas do not have a care at all for helping people as they do not have the resources - IF they had any sort of local non profit organizations that could transport him to facilities and get him into a psychiatric plan, like transitional living after detoxing... They would not have batted an eye however it seems like that is not on anyones mind in this video, he clearly is way out of balance - The officers did not even react to a very apparent shirtless crazy man running at them, a trip and a head butt can kill you, its terrible he received brain damage from this but it doesnt seem like a good scenario for anyone - unfortunately Steve may have nobody behind his back which is how he ended up in this place and why they feel so quick to justify him simply being a criminal in their eyes, at the end of the day HE should have gotten help long ago.
I worked in a psychiatric unit for years,and dealt with a LOT of people like Steve. No rationale…no coherent communication…no reasoning. Just in their own little world. This guy NEEDS to be in a secure setting.
@@anon20000everyone is different. some people can live a nearly normal life on medication, but sometimes medication just doesn’t work on certain people. plus you have to also remember that not everyone with serious mental disorders have a good support system in their life which leaves people to situations like Steve’s. you can prescribe all the medication you want to someone but without a good support system in their life there’s no for sure if they’ll stay on it.
As of August 25, 2023 this poor deputy STILL has not received any benefits from the county... Shame on them!! The deputy did nothing but be assaulted on the job and this is how he is treated? Absolutely unacceptable.
It's funny how things work out. Meanwhile there's a cop that murdered a guy on his hands and knees... The cop now gets complete disability and pension benefits for life, because his PTSD from the incident. Murder victims wife and kids are just left trying to figure out life without him. 🤷

Well, you see, in the very early 80s, someone decided people didn't need to be institutionalized and it would save tax dollars. So this person lobbied congress to pass a law requiring consent to be institutionalized and if their condition could be taken care of through medication then they were fine to release, ignoring the fact that many of the worst stop taking their meds. It was passed and he signed it into law.
Sadly we really don't have institutions for people anymore. Guys losing his mind and shouldn't be out and about until it's under control but there's nothing in place to rehabilitate or relocate people in his condition until they're either imprisoned for a crime they shouldn't have been allowed to commit or they're shot by the police. It's pretty pathetic that in this day and age we don't have anything in place to deal with this stuff. The crazy house only exists in the movies and any one of us could just lose it one day and be in his shoes. And the courts will enable us to harm others until we're sent to prison too

Can't understand it. By the nature of his job his superiors had already "directed" him to put himself in danger. No different to a commercial firm telling an employee to plug in an unsafe electrical item or climb a broken ladder. @vestler wdym? All the officers I saw and observed in this clip seemed to realize this guy has severe mental issues and behaved with extreme patience and kindness. They all seemed like really good guys.
EMS would probably have looked him over and not seen anything visible (unless his pupils were two different sizes) because otherwise his fellow officers would have noticed something. The EMS folks would probably have told him to go to the hospital for follow-up, to be sure, but he apparently didn't realize anything was wrong. Emergency room checkups cost a huge amount, even if you have medical insurance in the USA (I would have to pay thousands of dollars for my deductible before insurance kicked in), and can take hours and hours of waiting, so many people skip going there. In this case it was nearly deadly. I guess we should all take ANY kind of head injury seriously and get checked out.

@@monin4312 I'd say delirious psychosis .. Had one myself whilst trying to get of painkillers and benzos I was being prescribed.. I 100% thought I had been to valhalla over night and that I'd been raised up to the rank of giant , with a bunch of other convoluted shiet tied to that.. Also I was off about dates n shiet by some 6 months .. (However I was aware of something was out of the ordinary so I stayed indoors by myself thank god.)
We do have mental hospitals but the amount we have is vastly out numbered by the amount that we need. Also most all of them are 2 week stay hospitals. When ever someone figures out a way to make the amount of money per patient they want they will open hospitals all over and cram them full kinda like jails are.
The mental health hospitals are very poor in the main way they normally help patients unfortunately. This gentleman is unfortunately in need of dire help and yet if they send him to a institution he would more then likely just get drugged up thrown in a corner and charge the family a nice fee
For somebody who is absolutely 700% insane, Steve actually makes way more sense than the majority of the criminals we see on this channel. He said he didn't mean to hurt that officer, he was just trying to turn off his brain, and after hearing him talk for 19 minutes, I completely understand why.
A buddy of mine caught a stick to the neck accidentally while playing drop-in hockey. It collapsed his carotid momentarily and caused mini clots to form, resulting in a series of strokes. At the age of 31, his life permanently and drastically changed. It's crazy how the human body can be so resilient sometimes and so fragile in others.

I’m guessing the officer didn’t seek medical attention right away, but no one could’ve guessed the level of injury he sustained. So sad, I truly hope he eventually recovers completely. It’s a shame that there’s nowhere for people like Steve to go and receive the mental health help so desperately needed. The problem is that most of them are being used for drug rehabilitation and not mental. There should be separate but there is more money in drug rehab.

A friend of mine was like this. He was normal in highschool and then something happened to him when he got into his twenties. He dropped out of college and went back to out hometown. He would hang out in the streets doing cartwheels, flips, and otherwise make strange noises. It didnt matter the weather or time of day he would be out there. Everyone in town knew him for these antics. Eventually he passed after being hit by a vehicle. He needed help. I failed him. Our town failed him. RIP F.F.

Why should we pay to keep people like this locked up and sedated? As a society we seem to lack the ability to cull the dysfunctional, our empathy gets in the way of the greater good. In the old days the out of control crazies would be euthanized, for their own sake just as much as the communities.

Back in the day this guy would have been forced into a mental asylum long before this nonsense, but too many people complained extreme outlier cases of abuse so all the asylums were shut down and getting placed in a ward against your will now is a long arduous process of the courts. So the question is, do you think we should take people's rights away quickly and efficiently if they're believed to be mentally unwell or do you think we should air on the side of caution and give everyone their day in court first? You can not have both, and because society chose the latter not the former we have this scenario here.
I feel for both of them. I have personally dealt with insanity and it’s terrible. My friend was in a car wreck and sustained a head injury, for years after his mental health just left him making him crazy and unmanageable most days. What’s worse is he would have moments of clarity that would leave him confused and in tears. It was very heart breaking to watch. He acted a lot like this guy.

I saw it coming. It could have easily been prevented. The liability here falls on the agency for not training their officers on how to handle hand to hand combat. This would have been EASILY avoidable for literally any fucking person who has EVER been in a fight. How he let some guy charge and headbutt him from like 20 feet away is beyond me. I'm sorry, but the LEO was not trained properly and unfit for the role. It's sad, but is what it is. That agency had no business putting him in that environment. If they weren't going to at least physically test his skills (they clearly did not), he should have been placed in a less dangerous position.

How do we know that he isn't faking this for the free paydays? I'm sure he had a concussion and it caused him some issue, due to no fault of his own. But life-long, life-altering condition? I doubt it. The police in our country don't deserve any type of benefit of the doubt. If he is indeed hurt and is not exaggerating his condition, then it's a 1 in a million tragedy. But if he is abusing the system with exaggerations, then shame on him.

It was then up to the courts, meaning the D.A, the man's attorney &, the judge who came up with the decision on what to do, cash bond, sig bond, higher cash bond. Etc. You’re fault is expecting the government/society to do it. The government wants everyone like this. It has to be a family, community, and church thing. Although it’s not a mental illness problem, it’s a spiritual problem. This is a lose-lose situation. I feel deep empathy for Deputy Tollackson as I’ve also had a career-ending physical trauma with a long recovery. Not policing, but Navy. I also feel for Steve, even after what he did. Mental illness has plagued me(PTSD, anxiety and depression) since my injury and I’ve learned a fair bit about that. What Steve is going through is obviously many levels worse.
I feel bad for everyone involved. It’s tragic that the officer got seriously hurt, and it’s tragic what this guy is going thru to. He really needs to be treated for his mental instability.
The biggest problem now is that 40 years ago they closed all of the in-patient psych hospitals and this man belongs in one. Just taking medication and then being able to walk around like this is not safe for him or anyone else.
If you took the time to study the reasons wht they closed those type of facilities you would see the police abused the law and committed many innocent people.

My aunt was a police officer until a cracked out homeless man tackled her from behind. Her head hit the pavement and she received a severe concussion, had to immediately retire, and has permanent damage to her hearing and vision. I definitely feel for this officer.
No he said "we're gonna slow down till you get sunburned." It was one of the other voices (or alters) in his head fighting him, as either a person with schizophrenia or MPD.
My heart breaks for both the officer and Steve. It's obvious that this man is in pain and has needed help for a long time, and now the officer has to pay a lifelong price because of it.

This is a subject I can actually speak on bc it actually happened to me. Similar situation happened to me, except I was working in the medical field & ended up needing emergency brain surgery. It completely destroyed my career & tbh my life & everything I had worked so extremely hard for. I don't miss a Code Blue video, & this by far was the hardest for me to make it through. I was glad to see all the support that Deputy Tollackson had from his brothers in blue that helped with his financial hardships while he wasn't working. I didnt have that. So to see the solidarity between the officers really moved me. I too was injured by a psych patient. While they had zero reprocutions, my life was & has been destroyed, not just my career. 💔 My thoughts & prayers are with the Tollackson family & everyone else who works in a job who puts their life in danger. This is just one of those stories where everyone loses. Getting a life altering injury while working your job. Going through life like Steve must also be horrifying. Life is weird.
Steve doesn't know what planet he's on, and is probably only dimly aware that he's alive. The only senses that he has are hot, cold, loud, quiet, sleep, scream.
My nephew, a police officer, was injured during a domestic fight he showed up to. The man was having a mental episode and my nephew's arm was broken. He needed surgery to his arm but thank goodness he's well now and back to work.
Put Steve in a mental institution and get him the help he desperately needs . And so sorry for the cop that got life altering injury because of this . Glad he’s recovering well

As a stroke victim myself , it will be hardest on his family who will be his caregivers. My daughter stepped up and did a tremendous job with me. Three years later I can pretty much do anything, just take me longer. Memory is a major factor. But I am sure the officers family and brothers in blue will help him get through this. I will pray for his recovery.
hearing that the officer tried returning to duty but was unable to because of the injury is honestly the most heartbreaking thing ever. Man got hurt trying to protect people, had a life altering injury, and still wanted to help protect and serve. I honestly can't comprehend how I'd cope with that.

out of all the code blue cam videos I've seen this is the most heartbreaking. The heartbreaking thing about brain injuries is that in addition to leaving someone disabled/handicaped, It could also leave the victim with mental health issues, such as ptsd, depression, and suicidal ideation. My heart goes out to Eric and his family, and I really hope Steve turns his life around

If a person is put in s state of mind from a traumatic experience which could be a simple realization of life like becoming an adult knowing that youre going to be alone when the person was just getting used to doing the teenager thing. Then say their parents get hurt or he has another thing happen to him.. or he gets sick one night and gets a fever over 110 for too long.. is all it takes.. then they get stuck on a thought which makes the most sense at the time and subconsciously dream up an entire reality that coincides with his thought which builds the delusion and personality disorder.. plus once a person gets themselves in a state of mental override like that they only make things worse because of all the freaking out or mental strain theyre putting on themselves.. life is messed up.. like the being able to live life part is messed up.. when normal has shit like that in it and normal having to deal with all the abnormalities and cope with everything.. i dunno how some manage to do it.. most ride on their ignorance..

My heart breaks for Deputy Tollackson and his family. Steve should’ve never been released. He’s just like a lot of homeless people I’ve dealt with. This is honestly one of the most powerful videos I have ever seen on the subject of the difficulties of policing. I’m used to seeing police videos where there is some extreme violence involved, which only makes them harder for me to relate to personally because that’s not been my experience. Here there is a domestic situation involving mental health that I think is easier for most people to relate to. What stood out for me is the extraordinary patience and professionalism of the police involved; it was astounding. The psychosis of Steve was enduring was painful to watch; and yet the officers treated him firmly but compassionately and tried to engage him in conversation in the cruiser. The fact that we live in a society rich beyond measure but which does not take preventive measures for the likes of Steve’s illness before it resulted in the deputy’s injuries is hard to fathom. The fact that the legal system released Steve back into the population with severe psychosis after injuring the policeman is astounding: it must be the case that the legal system there had no other options. I wonder if legislators as a body saw this video if things would change; if funding for mental health wouldn’t be seen as a necessity instead of as an option. I can’t imagine the police department isn’t insured for the disability of this officer. Can it be that the insurers for the municipality itself are questioning the validity of the injury and it’s cause? Can they actually be positing that the injury had nothing to do with the attack, that the officer somehow bumped his jaw on the kitchen counter or something? How can any municipality expect anyone to become a police officers if they see them mistreated by the municipality? Watching this, reaffirms my own understanding that I could not do that job. It takes a very special person with the discipline to sit and talk calmly with someone who might actively hate you because of your uniform, who may potentially try to injure or kill you or your brother. I know the world would go to hell with in 48 hours without police. The deputies body and our cultural agreements are much more fragile than they appear.
Crazy that some departments will fight tooth and nail and ruin their reputations to get benefits for corrupt officers that break the law, but this department wont give benefits to the guy who got severely injured in the line of duty. Crazy world.

the problem arises from any further court not fulfilling its duties to the public, that creates questions as how this threat to the public must be satisfactorily resolved.
These people used to be put in asylums but that was deemed too cruel so they made sure they kept their dignity by releasing them to the streets to fend for themselves. Apparently this is better and the guy has more dignity now.

I work in mental health. It is so messed up that we cant get people like him long term care. There are many times we are forced to release people and I feel extreme guilt and worry knowing that there is a high probability someone innocent and as well as the patient are going to get hurt.

So much incompetence. The EMS should have been called immediately in order for the injured officer to be examined. The man was obviously going through a psychotic episode and should have been held for evaluation, instead of release on $2,000 bond. My brother in law went through all this. He didn’t get violent but he was crazy. The lie they want you to believe is that with proper intervention they can fix this. No, we do not have the means or the medicines to fix every broken mind. Often the meds help for awhile but cause severe organ damage.

I have a friend exactly like this guy and when he sees people and hears voices he don't even trust his family. For a Schizo to trust you is a very heartwarming thing. So I have talked him down for hours until he could be in his parents care. He was losing his mind and I believe he's in the mental hospital now for what happened this past week.

yeah this was a very strange scenario, 100% all of them knew he was out of his mind whether it was self induced delirium (seemed like is an abuser of embalming fluids or wet) - kind of despicable but realistically some areas do not have a care at all for helping people as they do not have the resources - IF they had any sort of local non profit organizations that could transport him to facilities and get him into a psychiatric plan, like transitional living after detoxing... I worked in a psychiatric unit for years,and dealt with a LOT of people like Steve. No rationale…no coherent communication…no reasoning. Just in their own little world. This guy NEEDS to be in a secure setting.

@@anon20000everyone is different. some people can live a nearly normal life on medication, but sometimes medication just doesn’t work on certain people. plus you have to also remember that not everyone with serious mental disorders have a good support system in their life which leaves people to situations like Steve’s. you can prescribe all the medication you want to someone but without a good support system in their life there’s no for sure if they’ll stay on it.

After what he did to that officer, it is insane that this man is walking around free. He needs to be in a high security mental institution.
Well, you see, in the very early 80s, someone decided people didn't need to be institutionalized and it would save tax dollars. So this person lobbied congress to pass a law requiring consent to be institutionalized and if their condition could be taken care of through medication then they were fine to release, ignoring the fact that many of the worst stop taking their meds. It was passed and he signed it into law.

EMS would probably have looked him over and not seen anything visible (unless his pupils were two different sizes) because otherwise his fellow officers would have noticed something. The EMS folks would probably have told him to go to the hospital for follow-up, to be sure, but he apparently didn't realize anything was wrong. Emergency room checkups cost a huge amount, even if you have medical insurance in the USA (I would have to pay thousands of dollars for my deductible before insurance kicked in), and can take hours and hours of waiting, so many people skip going there. In this case it was nearly deadly. I guess we should all take ANY kind of head injury seriously and get checked out.

Sadly, prisons are the largest providers of mental health care in the USA since residential mental hospitals were largely phased out
We do have mental hospitals but the amount we have is vastly out numbered by the amount that we need. Also most all of them are 2 week stay hospitals. When ever someone figures out a way to make the amount of money per patient they want they will open hospitals all over and cram them full kinda like jails are.
The mental health hospitals are very poor in the main way they normally help patients unfortunately. This gentleman is unfortunately in need of dire help and yet if they send him to a institution he would more then likely just get drugged up thrown in a corner and charge the family a nice fee

For somebody who is absolutely 700% insane, Steve actually makes way more sense than the majority of the criminals we see on this channel. He said he didn't mean to hurt that officer, he was just trying to turn off his brain, and after hearing him talk for 19 minutes, I completely understand why.
A buddy of mine caught a stick to the neck accidentally while playing drop-in hockey. It collapsed his carotid momentarily and caused mini clots to form, resulting in a series of strokes. At the age of 31, his life permanently and drastically changed. It's crazy how the human body can be so resilient sometimes and so fragile in others.

A friend of mine was like this. He was normal in highschool and then something happened to him when he got into his twenties. He dropped out of college and went back to out hometown. He would hang out in the streets doing cartwheels, flips, and otherwise make strange noises. It didnt matter the weather or time of day he would be out there. Everyone in town knew him for these antics. Eventually he passed after being hit by a vehicle. He needed help. I failed him. Our town failed him.

How do you think people get institutionalized? Back in the day this guy would have been forced into a mental asylum long before this nonsense, but too many people complained extreme outlier cases of abuse so all the asylums were shut down and getting placed in a ward against your will now is a long arduous process of the courts.
So the question is, do you think we should take people's rights away quickly and efficiently if they're believed to be mentally unwell or do you think we should air on the side of caution and give everyone their day in court first? You can not have both, and because society chose the latter not the former we have this scenario here.
I feel for both of them. I have personally dealt with insanity and it’s terrible. My friend was in a car wreck and sustained a head injury, for years after his mental health just left him making him crazy and unmanageable most days. What’s worse is he would have moments of clarity that would leave him confused and in tears. It was very heart breaking to watch. He acted a lot like this guy.

I watched the video until the very end it said he dropped dead in his home due to blunt force trauma to his temple and suffered a massive stroke.
This is a lose-lose situation. I feel deep empathy for Deputy Tollackson as I’ve also had a career-ending physical trauma with a long recovery. Not policing, but Navy.
I also feel for Steve, even after what he did. Mental illness has plagued me(PTSD, anxiety and depression) since my injury and I’ve learned a fair bit about that. What Steve is going through is obviously many levels worse.

My aunt was a police officer until a cracked out homeless man tackled her from behind. Her head hit the pavement and she received a severe concussion, had to immediately retire, and has permanent damage to her hearing and vision. I definitely feel for this officer.

This is a subject I can actually speak on bc it actually happened to me. Similar situation happened to me, except I was working in the medical field & ended up needing emergency brain surgery. It completely destroyed my career & tbh my life & everything I had worked so extremely hard for. I don't miss a Code Blue video, & this by far was the hardest for me to make it through. I was glad to see all the support that Deputy Tollackson had from his brothers in blue that helped with his financial hardships while he wasn't working. I didnt have that. So to see the solidarity between the officers really moved me. I too was injured by a psych patient. While they had zero reprocutions, my life was & has been destroyed, not just my career. 💔 My thoughts & prayers are with the Tollackson family & everyone else who works in a job who puts their life in danger. As a stroke victim myself , it will be hardest on his family who will be his caregivers. My daughter stepped up and did a tremendous job with me. Three years later I can pretty much do anything, just take me longer. Memory is a major factor. But I am sure the officers family and brothers in blue will help him get through this. I will pray for his recovery.

hearing that the officer tried returning to duty but was unable to because of the injury is honestly the most heartbreaking thing ever. Man got hurt trying to protect people, had a life altering injury, and still wanted to help protect and serve. I honestly can't comprehend how I'd cope with that.

The heartbreaking thing about brain injuries is that in addition to leaving someone disabled/handicaped, It could also leave the victim with mental health issues, such as ptsd, depression, and suicidal ideation. Went from being a perfectly normal, fully functioning young man, too not being able to differentiate between hallucinations/delusions and when he was in reality. The human brain is a mysterious super computer.. if thought hard and long enough you could literally cause organ failure without any illness.. placebo is a lot deeper than just sugar pills. If a person is put in s state of mind from a traumatic experience which could be a simple realization of life like becoming an adult knowing that youre going to be alone when the person was just getting used to doing the teenager thing. Then say their parents get hurt or he has another thing happen to him.. or he gets sick one night and gets a fever over 110 for too long.. is all it takes.. then they get stuck on a thought which makes the most sense at the time and subconsciously dream up an entire reality that coincides with his thought which builds the delusion and personality disorder.. plus once a person gets themselves in a state of mental override like that they only make things worse because of all the freaking out or mental strain theyre putting on themselves.. life is messed up.. like the being able to live life part is messed up.. when normal has shit like that in it and normal having to deal with all the abnormalities and cope with everything.. i dunno how some manage to do it.. most ride on their ignorance..

Because some of those people get the help they need while incarcerated and the help is maintained so while they are incarcerated they are fine people (you’d never know they were crazy) but once they get out the don’t maintain the help and just fall off the deep end and basically back at square one all over again. My heart breaks for Deputy Tollackson and his family. Steve should’ve never been released. He’s just like a lot of homeless people I’ve dealt with. They get hospitalized and leveled out on meds then they get released and quit taking them. It’s a horrible cycle. Sadly, he’s probably going to end himself in one of these episodes. And probably ruin someone else’s life in the process.

This is honestly one of the most powerful videos I have ever seen on the subject of the difficulties of policing. I’m used to seeing police videos where there is some extreme violence involved, which only makes them harder for me to relate to personally because that’s not been my experience. Here there is a domestic situation involving mental health that I think is easier for most people to relate to.
What stood out for me is the extraordinary patience and professionalism of the police involved; it was astounding. The psychosis of Steve was enduring was painful to watch; and yet the officers treated him firmly but compassionately and tried to engage him in conversation in the cruiser. The fact that we live in a society rich beyond measure but which does not take preventive measures for the likes of Steve’s illness before it resulted in the deputy’s injuries is hard to fathom. The fact that the legal system released Steve back into the population with severe psychosis after injuring the policeman is astounding: it must be the case that the legal system there had no other options.
I wonder if legislators as a body saw this video if things would change; if funding for mental health wouldn’t be seen as a necessity instead of as an option.
I can’t imagine the police department isn’t insured for the disability of this officer. Can it be that the insurers for the municipality itself are questioning the validity of the injury and it’s cause? Can they actually be positing that the injury had nothing to do with the attack, that the officer somehow bumped his jaw on the kitchen counter or something? How can any municipality expect anyone to become a police officers if they see them mistreated by the municipality?
Watching this, reaffirms my own understanding that I could not do that job. It takes a very special person with the discipline to sit and talk calmly with someone who might actively hate you because of your uniform, who may potentially try to injure or kill you or your brother. I know the world would go to hell with in 48 hours without police. The deputies body and our cultural agreements are much more fragile than they appear.

I work in mental health. It is so messed up that we cant get people like him long term care.
There are many times we are forced to release people and I feel extreme guilt and worry knowing that there is a high probability someone innocent and as well as the patient are going to get hurt.

So much incompetence. The EMS should have been called immediately in order for the injured officer to be examined. The man was obviously going through a psychotic episode and should have been held for evaluation, instead of release on $2,000 bond. Officer could have died and the man could have killed someone else after he was released. Terrible for both the officer and man experiencing psychosis. I hope they’re both ok now and receiving the care they need.

My brother in law went through all this. He didn’t get violent but he was crazy. The lie they want you to believe is that with proper intervention they can fix this. No, we do not have the means or the medicines to fix every broken mind. Often the meds help for awhile but cause severe organ damage.

I have a friend exactly like this guy and when he sees people and hears voices he don't even trust his family. For a Schizo to trust you is a very heartwarming thing. So I have talked him down for hours until he could be in his parents care. He was losing his mind and I believe he's in the mental hospital now for what happened this past week.
