Canon EOS 5D Mark I vs Canon EOS 5D Mark II (Summer Tree Twilight Landscape Photography)

- I was passing a beautiful Hawthorn or maybe Blackthorn tree at twilight. I thought this would be a good subject to compare the Canon EOS 5D Mark I against it’s predecessor Canon EOS 5D Mark II. The Canon EOS 5D Mark I or Classic was renowned for its filmic rendition of colours. Which would do well in this LUT Map Instagram world photographic world.

i think showing the 2 shots side by side, straight out of camera, would have been manifestly helpful.
5D classic all the way
How weird. The video started and I could smell the air! Yep, definitely spent way too much time in the Lakes! 🤣🤣🤣
Smell of sheep, Hawthorn Blossom and coconut from the Gorse bushes 😁
Great video Andrew, that tree stands out like dogs balls on a canary, loved the more pinkish colour from the Mark 1.
Thanks Jeremy for the illustrative comment :-)
The 5D mark ii beats the 5D in every category tested by DxOMark.....just sayin.
That's technically correct, but it has a filmic look (straight out of the box) to the photos which subsequent digital cameras lack. Great for portraits.
Good comparison. Thougb It looks like the WB is not the same on both pictures so maybe a grey card calibration for next time? That said, I prefer the Mark II in real world use. A lot of people are hyping up the classic but it is very old and outdated in a lot of ways.
Found the Classic from a local source and bought it immediately about two years ago. This is my goto camera for all the purposes except wildlife.
Good video and nice pictures. I have to agree that the Mark I photo seemed the most appealing though the II's not bad either. I got a mark II not to long ago to get into full frame photography. Besides being a Canon fan since the 80's, I've been shooting with a 70D for a while and already had a collection of full frame ef lenses, so the 5D2 seemed like a good option for my budget. I have to say I've been pretty happy with it.
I liked the mark II until you showed the comparison with the mark 1, the colors on the mark 1 for the tree looked much better and the greens seem more natural as well. Excellent useful video -thanks for the efforts. Best wishes! Now I am going to clean (eventually) my mark 1 sensor and buy one of those infrared filter things. Quite good information on these Canon cameras.
If you want a filmic Instagramy look the mark 1 has a few more creative options, especially on those blues sky days in infrared. Though I haven't tried it in autumn and winter yet. Have some photographic fun with your mark 1 especially next summer. 😎
IMO, the Classic captured more light with its bigger pixels and produced eye-soothing images.
I own the Mark II and madly looking for a Classic. Yet to find one!
However, was successful in getting a legend kit lens for this similar body, EF 28-135mm IS. So happy with this vintage and Canon's first IS lens.
Hi Quazi. It probably won't help you but Wilkinson Cameras in Carlisle, Uk. Had one last week. www.wilkinson.co.uk/pre-owned-canon-eos-5d-mark-i-body-22433/
@@andrewfindlayphoto thank you very much. Will try to contact them.
It does not capture more light. How should that happen? Every pixel is a barrel and a few of them is not better, but worse, than more of them. The Classic er more blurred, and in a funny way, that fact kan make a pic look "better"
@@jakoblevesen8236 bigger pixels gather more light is basic physics. The Classic is hugely sought after legend no matter whether someone likes it or not.
Thanks Andrew for doing your channel. I just watched one of your films and will sure want to stay to see them all. I am a fresh discoverer of the Canon 5Dm1 virtues and will be looking to get one soon. Coming from Nikon D700 and Fuji, I want to explore the holy grail of color in pictures.
Nothing you can’t adjust later on the RAW file…
That's true but some people don't know how 🤔
Good Morning Great Canon 5D comp Video, thanks for sharing, Have a great weekend
I think you're right. I'm going to have to get a Mk1 at the prices they're going for these days.
I think there is one at www.wilkinson.co.uk/pre-owned-canon-eos-5d-mark-i-body-22481/
Sorry out of stock 😥
Old is GOLD
The image from 5D MKii is too yellow on my laptop. You can clearly see it in how the greens have been been rendered.
5d color style, exposure compensation, how to set the contrast and saturation?
@@user-my2lq1cz4y On the 5D Mark I. Go to Menu. Picture Styles. Jump. There you have it. Watch my next week's video!
@@andrewfindlayphoto Looking forward to it!🥳
Great video Andrew. My wife was walking by the TV when I was watching and stopped for a moment and said, "he looks a lot like Richard Branson". I'd take that as a compliment. Quite an unusual pink-ish tree in the middle of nothing but green. Lovely scene. I agree, I thought the Mark I was a much nicer looking photo colour-wise. Really enjoyed the birdsong as well. Hope you are doing well. Have a great weekend over there!
Thanks Paul. This was just a filler episode. I've hurt my toe and can't get out. I also am having difficulty editing the next video. More bird song in the future :-) I wish I had Richard Branson's money. When I have shorter hair and no beard, I think I look like David Soul from Starsky & Hutch. Tell your wife I think she looks like Angelina Jolie ;-)
Great video. Enjoyed the accent as well
quite suprising results!. nice test. and beautiful picture.
I was literally taken back with the end conclusion of this video. Like I actually had exclamation of surprise on my face and pulled back in my chair. hahaha. I'm in shock that you and everyone felt the classic had the better photo. I thought it was definitive the mark 2 had the better image. The contrast and saturation was good without being too much. It had a more artistic feel to it.
It's just personal taste. The greens in the mark 2 are more contrasty which was more realistic compared to the flatter greens of the mark 1. But the main thing is that the mark 2 had to much orange in the pinks which the mark 1 doesn't have. It's vitamin C deficent 😆
@@andrewfindlayphoto ok, yep. I just went back and rewatched. I totally see what you're saying now. I guess it just depends where your focus is and what your taste is. I guess I was looking at the majority impression it gave me, which was the contrast and saturation. It just hit me. But yes, I can totally see if the tree was the focus, you would want to capture it as accurately as possible. And of course, with Lightroom you can make both of these images look identical to each other, if one wanted to.
@@jasonkrug6277 Yes software can do wonders to match photos from different cameras. Sometimes the lack of saturation, contrast, dynamic range and resolution adds to the image. It's like the old days of film when I would use Konica 3200. It was awful but at twilight it made you photos look like a painting 🙂
@@andrewfindlayphoto well here you must step in and say, what's the most true to the actual scenery.
I enjoyed the video Andrew! I am moving from Nikon to Canon, for a variety of reasons so any information I can get about Canon cameras is valuable to me. This was very helpful. I certainly liked the Mark 1 photo the best. Thanks for doing the comparison.
Thanks Walter. Here's another tip that might be useful. If you are using a none Canon software to process your raw photos, like Lightroom set the White Balance at 5500k (daylight) plus 5 magenta as the baseline start for landscape photography. Canon White Balance can be a bit green. 🙂
@@andrewfindlayphoto thanks for the tip
Prefer the Mark 1 photo, but wondering if it's more of a white balance difference than anything. Thinking that exposing for a gray card in the scene would make the results more similar than different?
The mark 1 has a more filmic look just because of the sensor. I was thinking about shooting a colour chart for all my cameras to see exactly how they differ. Maybe the next video?
There's also a significant ISO difference: when you set them to the same ISO setting (such as 100) they are not the same actual ISO. The 5Dc is about 93 and the mark II is around 70. (Similar difference applies to the other ISO values as well.) Enough to squash the highlights enough that the 5Dc runs out of the little headroom it has compared to the mark 2, at the same setting that is ideal for the mark 2.
How come you haven't succumbed to the great push to the Fujifilm 100r as so many landscaped photographers have - tongue -in-cheek?
I'd love a Fujifilm 100r but I can't justify the expense. A higher dynamic range sensor would be nice on a 20 megapixel camera at a low cost would be great 😊
Gotta stand up for the mark 2 here.. Although the same size they are two completely different sensors along with two different processors.. Having said that I actually prefer the image from the mark 1 in this instance but I feel that given a bit of fettling with picture style settings the mark 2 could produce an equally impressive image and as Im sure you are well aware 10 minutes in post process will turn out anything you wish. If you'd like something really fresh try leaving the L in the car and stick a Mamiya/Sekor 200mm on either camera, Or an XR Rikenon 50/2 L (Tomioka).. If you want to play about with colour I dont think there's a better way to go than vintage lens coatings. Anyway thanks for interesting, Informative vid : )
Good points. I mainly use the mark II too. I just thought it was interesting the jump in technology between then. I think if you want a cheapish camera that has a filmic quality out of the box and also does does infrared of sorts with just a filter (see my other videos 😃) it is the ideal camera for Instagram and creative types 😀
@@andrewfindlayphoto No problem.. Its first of your vids I watched and Ive subscribed now so will get watchin your others Ps: Ive got an old filmic cam as well... Zenit EM with Jupiter 9.. Im absolutely cr*p with it until I put the lens on my Canon lol : )
I thought I wouldn't find differences but the mark I looks like more... real. More tridimensional, maybe due to more color contrast? what strange thing is technology.
This is a good Informative Video
Thank you Mr Acid, stop watching videos at work ;-)
Predecessor means the one before. The 5D was the Predecessor of the 5D mark ii.
Excellent video and so glad i just ordered a used classic! Now I just need to find a decent lens..
Canon L series are good, mark ii 's are slightly better. 16-35mm or 24-105 is a good all rounder
@@andrewfindlayphoto Thank you, I have been thinking of the 24-105 l (but mark i due to lower price), since it is a bit more versatile, though the 16-35 would be great too..
Wow ! Quite a difference, very noticeable. Good pictures. 👍😎
Thanks Jaime 😁
for artist who need color accuracy references it seems the mark 1 would be best to use.
I think it has a nicer colour rendition but colour is subjective at the best of times. Like film each type of sensor has a different colour bias. You can always tweak the files to get what you want 😊
Can you please tell what's the name of the preset used for pics ? Thx
On both cameras I use ' Standard ' but I dial down the contrast back 2 clicks and the saturation up 1 click. Sharpness is dialled back to ' 0 ' , I always sharpen to the size of the final image using photoshop Smart Sharpen or Alex Nail's sharpen photoshop presents. See in his video description.

@@andrewfindlayphoto Thanks for answer, i thought it was used Lightroom with some presets. Have a good day !👍
So mk 1 or mk 2 for wildlife photography
Mk2 for wildlife slightly better noise and focusing.
@@andrewfindlayphoto thank you 😊
What are you using for a mic? Background sounds really good.
Just using the mics in the phone I'm filming with, the birds are just close 😆
@@andrewfindlayphoto thought you had a pro mic. Looks like someday soon cellphones will take over consumer grade video cameras.
@@Ericbjohnston5150 I have a Røde VideoMicro but the phone still beats it unless it's windy. Can't fit big enough muffs 😆
Funny comparison and right away, I was also surprised when I saw the two quite different pictures. Made me wonder; which is closest to the reality? And I think you forgot to look at the scene and say to the microphone, which pic got closest to the real world look. I have had a 5D Mk1 and have now a MkII and surely, the II is the better camera. But I would like to hear your answer on the Q; which got closest?
The mark ii is closest to reality between the two. Mark I is green and orange deficient which makes it good for skin tones. But deficiencies can be corrected in post. Personally I don't care about reality being represented, it's Art. 🤔
I dont do art. No photographer really does art. it's just a picturemachine. Many photographers FEEL too much for their own pictures. I also think and know the MkII is the most correct colorviever of the two
@@andrewfindlayphoto
@@jakoblevesen8236 if you prefer to stay away from art then perhaps the mark 4 or a sony would serve you better.
Nice comparison Andrew! Mark I’s colours were significantly better there! Cheers
