  • The Canon 5D (classic) is a collection camera and one I have wanted to try for a while. I picked up this old DSLR with the intention of using my collection of vintage 35mm film camera lenses on it.

I bought a used 5D in 2018 and sold it the same year. I regretted ever since. I just got another one (from MPB) this week. £200 and it looks like it's never been touched. It's immaculate.
Anyway, it will have my 40mm f/2.8 "pancake" on it full time. That's a great combination for a walk-around camera, just wide enough. 50mm just crosses over into a Portrait lens for me, whereas the 40mm is an environmental portrait lens. It gives you just enough of the background. If I had to buy a lens for it then I'd probably get an old 28mm f/2.8. They are 100 quid and good enough.
Amazing to think that you can get a 5D and 28mm lens for £300. There are no excuses any more.

I sold a 5d classic not long ago and totally regret it. It didn't have live view, it didn't have much dynamic range, the mirror even fell off at one point too, but the images I got from it were beautiful. I will get another one day. Mine was immaculate though and I think I would struggle to get one as mint again 😕

Oddly enough im at that position myself. Looking back at it my favorite photos were on the classic and now its worth more than i bought it for🥹

I too have the 5D classic, (also a 6D) and an EM1ii. I have a Helios 44M and adapter to mount it to the 5D & 6D. I did find a Puxco M42 to Micro Four Thirds adapter which is also a speed booster. With this on the EM1ii, it gives an equivalent field of view to an 82mm lens on a "full frame" camera. It also gives an equivalent depth of field equal to f2.8 with the lens wide open at f2, but it also improves light gathering, so at f2, the light coming in is closer to an f1.4, the speed booster was around £60 on Amazon when I bought mine about 2 years ago. Certainly worth a look to give you something different from any vintage M42 mount lenses.

      @ChrisBaitson  9 месяцев назад

Thanks for that John. It’s not something I’d considered before. I always thought the speed boosters were “new lens” prices. I didn’t realise you could get them at that price.

Of course I'm giving a thumbs up to this wonderful video. I liked your composition very much. I love the 5D Mk I. I own two of them since the years when I worked as a weddings photographer. Thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures. Greetings

got Classic and Mark 3. There is so little difference between the two in terms of IQ ! it's incredible in low light and full frame look on this camera is just a Classic golden standard at least!

What a nostalgia trip. I had a 5D mkii which was allegedly a big improvement on the mk I, although I didn’t know that at the time. I well remember being at an airport duty free and there was one, just lying on the counter - no I didn’t! But I did pick it up and it was love at first sight, it just felt right. I bought one and used it for years, eventually selling it for no money to buy a 6D ii. (Couldn’t afford a 5D mk IV) Better spec of course, but it wasn’t the same. No happy ending I’m afraid, but I have got used to the new one

Excellent Chris, I still have my Canon 5D mkIII which is sitting in a bag now for a couple of years as i prefer to use my Olympus EM1 mkIII for my wildlife, but i bought a pair of fujis the X-T5 & X-T2 which i have put my canon L lenses on great combo for when you want to switch it up for street/travel photography.

I was surprised to see this in my thread today Chris, as you seem to be happy with your new system, but I can understand what you are saying about a cheap and capable full frame camera to utilise old lenses. My kept my own 5D classic, because it does the job, yes it's not so versatile as modern day cameras, but it does give good results if you keep it within it's limits. Plus, and I know this sounds daft, but I just love the shutter sound on it...I know it's crazy. I sold my 5D MK.3 only recently, to get the 6D MK.2, mainly because of the rear touch screen, which I find brilliant.
Funnily enough, I've noticed the price of 5D classics going up on fleebay recently, next it will be the 5D MK.2, which to be fair was a totally different animal to the classic. Good video, thanks for sharing.

I sold my 5D Mark iii for the EM1 Mark ii in the end. I miss that camera but I don’t miss the weight. I know what you mean about the shutter sound on the 5D too!

Lovely video, Chris. It's nice to see the older gear used, and they were some properly challenging conditions. Have you tried a 9 shot (3x3) stitch to get around only having the 50mm . I do this quite often, even handheld then just let Lightroom sort it out and crop to the wider comp i was after.

    • @ChrisBaitson

I have done that in the past but it completely escaped me today. That’s a good point for a future video though!

Have had a mint classic with battery grip for a good few years as well as a mkii and the images from the classic have a beautiful rendering with very little work in LR.

I loved my 5D... but after my mirror dropped out mid-wedding, I never fully trusted it again.
However, its a great feeling working with the camera, its like back in the analogue days, to get results we must read the light carefully + waiting for all to fall into place, and this is NOT a bad thing. We become "better" photographers, since we must think before shooting. Today we have 20 frames a second + dynamic range from black night to the Sahara sun ... and a resolution to astronomical proportions... so less thinking is needed before we act, and we become lazy.

In the 80s I shot a lot of film using a Canon A1. Even though I have three Canon APD-C cameras, I bought a 5D to keep using my FD lenses and get back to 35mm "film" shooting without the hassle and expense of film processing. Who needs auto ISO when you've got a vintage Gossen light meter?

The only thing I didn't like about the 5D was it's bad AF. Ok for landscape, but not for portraits.
The 5D II was not better.
The 5D III is much better and becomes a classic camera also.
