    I’ve owned 10 (TEN!) 6D bodies in the past decade, some for a day and some for a year, and the 6D was always the girl next door who loved me and was there for me while chased others 😂 Over the years when I needed a second or third camera in a pinch I’d go buy a 6D with 300k actuations for peanuts, do my project, then sell the body and go on thinking that the 6D wasn’t all that great. Just over a year ago I realized that the flashy fancy soulless mirrorless cameras I’ve been using were slowly killing the fun of photo and video, so I sold it all and went to a 5D classic with a simple set of very old EF primes. When that 5D made photography fun again, and felt “normal” to me, I picked up a 6D for the tenth time only this time with a brand new appreciation for it. After using the 5D the 6D feels like a low light BEAST… I do miss having a button on top for white balance and I do miss having 1/8000 shutter speed, but other than that I think the 6D is just the perfect camera for me.

    Have I told you lately that I love you, son? I am in awe of the man you have grown to be. So talented, so smart, someone I never get tired of listening to. I look at your studio and realize that I have only one picture in my office, and it is a downloaded cell phone picture of Marlene. Maybe my office would make me happier if I did like you and printed a plethora of my work from over the years and papered my wall with great memories . . .

    A few months ago I decided to get a 6D and a 50mm for portrait work. Long story short, I found a used one that only had a few 100 shuttercounts and the old 50mm 1.8 + battery-charger-SD card for about 350USD.
    When the camera arrived, it turns out that the focusing screen has fallen out and got a few scratches (they are extremely soft). I contacted the seller and he refunded me 150USD without any questions asked. Even though I told him that a focus screen doesn't cost more than 40-50 bucks, but he would like to correct the "bad" impression even though practically it wasn't his fault. (We have a trust-based society here in Norway which may be hard to believe in).
    Anyway, I love 6D.
    Thanks😊

    I have the 5d classic and also the 6d classic and I agree 100% with you. The 6d is like the 5d classic but like you said the images of both cameras straight out of camera have just a special recepe on both cameras, but in ny opinion If I could only have one of them it would be the 6d. I also have the 6d mark 2 and I prefer the 6d classic.

    The 6D is just like a trusty good friend. And it's solid. A few weeks after I bought it, I went on a fishing video shooting in summer, rainy day, in the middle of a lake on little boats, rain showers, hands always wet. I had the plastic fantastic 50mm f1.8 mounted, and at anytime it has had mist or humidity issues.
    Also used it a lot on beaches and even in water waist deep. I've been rude with it, and it still works great, same performances as it was new, with the same perfect and unique rendering. I can't do anything but loving it.

    I just discovered something on the 6D I didn't know about for years. If you are not sure about exposure in a complex scene, you can click into live view and press the DOF button to get exposure simulation on the screen. In a complex lighting situation, this is a nice alternative to chimping. You can also wait a second or two for the camera to focus and take the shot.

    Regarding the poor on/off switch on the 6D .....I never had a problem with that because......I hardly ever shut off my 6D !
    and as I would take the 6D out of my bag and found it still with most of the charge it had before I put it down a week
    or two before ........and though I never did a formal test of the battery life in shutoff or left on (sleep) mode, I never
    took it out to a dead battery .........loved that about it .........and I totally loved that camera .

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  Год назад

      It's funny you say that, because for the last few months I have decided to leave it on all the time and utilize the sleep mode. Like you, I have noticed that there doesn't seem to be a battery life penalty. Every time it wakes up, it still shows a full battery. Even weeks later.

    • @thenexthobby
      @thenexthobby Год назад +2

      I got into the habit of leaving its GPS on, so that basic location info would be one less metadata item to edit later. Bad idea, it eats the battery because the GPS never sleeps, even when the camera is fully turned off.

      That’s one of the greatest things about the current camera market, all these great cameras that I can still very clearly remember being “new” are now old and “outdated” and can be purchased cheap. We live in a world where the 5d can be reliably purchased for $150, the 5d2 for $250, the 6d for $300, a D700 for $250, etc. It’s finally affordable to have GAS 🤷‍♂️

His main business one is now an R6 (a bit easier in key areas incl x2 card slots means a bit less backing up during a day/ISO a few gens on), but the 6D still gets used much. A wave went over it once and on it marches........I am very pleased with mine.

    Early in this video regarding sports sent me down memory lane. Working for a small publisher I was photographing a small stable with a few racehorses back in the mid-90s. I was shooting a Nikon FM, no motor drive, with a quite sharp Tokina zoom lens, on Tri-X film. I wanted a nice shot of the horse coming out of the gate. I set my aperture and shutter, pre-focused on a spot just a bit in front of the gate, and had the trainer take the horse out of the gate. I got an image of the horse with it's front legs off the grounds, bounding out of the gate. When we printed out the page ready to go to the printer (old paper people will get that) the publisher looked at the image on paper and exclaimed that he could see the individual hairs. If Thom Barnes was impressed enough to comment out loud, that was an accomplishment. Learning to get the shot within the limits of old film gear and film was something to be proud of and a skill to appreciate. Still love my 6D.
    I've shot poorly lit night shots with the 6D at very high ISO with no flash and was able to clean them up easily in Lightroom to get some pretty good images. That was using a Tamron 24-70mm f2.8.

      I love hearing stories like this (seriously). It's the kind of stuff that I admire and appreciate and is what I am referencing when I talk about "old school film photographers". I think the limitations of the gear with only spur the creativity of a good photographer, which can lead to an even better end result. Whereas if the camera can "do everything" then the average user will become (or remain) complacent and end up with an SD card full of mediocre snapshots. Complacency kills.

    I just sold my EOS R and bought a second 6D. From now on, I wil now be doing events with two 6D's. There are pluses and minuses. Now I really have to know the 6D intimately. Image quality will not be a problem, nor will focusing in low light. Controlling exposure might be more challenging with no EVF. But at least the focus point won't be wandering randomly around the viewfinder. Appreciate your videos.

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  Год назад

      The 6D files hold up remarkably well in post processing when having to make big exposure corrections. Way better than I ever would have expected. I took a trip to Alishan and ended up having multiple photos that were underexposed by multiple stops (mistake on my part) and I was able to not only boost the exposure by multiple stops in lightroom, but I was then able to further play with highlights, shadows, etc. The final photos looked fantastic and I even made a large print from one of them.
      I say all that in reference to you mentioning that controlling exposure will be more difficult without the EVF. That's true, but the 6D will typically be okay, anyway.

    • @NGC1433
      @NGC1433 11 месяцев назад

      I'm in a similar boat. I got the R couple years ago but for the live of me cloud never sell my 6D. I furiously hate the ergonomics of R. (No, not the touch thingy, canon tried, failed, that's ok) The fact I can't just switch to manual focus with a switch, the fact that ISO setting does not go to "Auto" when you assign it to any control wheel and you have to use menu or touchscreen to get it back to Auto... The R causes me so much grief and anger.
      But I can't, just can't imagine living without the eye tracking. I am lucky bastard who has access to 85 f1,2 and 50 f1,2 and they are nearly useless on 6D or any older camera if you subject is alive.
      And yes, 6D image is special. Very special.

      @kevinl1492 11 месяцев назад

      @NGC1433 I used the mfn button and control dial to adjust ISO with my eye to the viewfinder. That worked well for me. I also used the Fv mode when I needed to control both shutter speed and aperture. I miss that. And the files were better than the RP. But I do not regret dropping the RF system.

I watch and I see the 6d with better dinamic range, better weight, Automatic ISO, better resolution (perfect for drop photos if it is neccesary), much better ISO, GPS, etc etc etc. With some dudes I sell the 5d for 350 euros and I bought the 6d of a friend for 500 euros. So, this operation only supossed me 150 euros and the results are fantastic. Today I continue with canon 6d with 24-105 f4 L IS and 50mm 1.8 stm. That is all my equip and I dont need more. I've owned a used 6D for the past nine months. I paired it with used 24-105L, 70-200L IS and 50mm 1.8 lenses as well.
    It's a fantastic camera and, for around the price of a new Sony RX100 VII, I have a first rate system!
    The 6D colour capture and rendering is simply superb: really natural looking, closer to the look of say a Kodachrome 64 film slide than any other camera in my experience. 20MP on the 6D full frame sensor works so well...
    If you want to photograph fast moving wildlife or sports action, then maybe people should choose another camera with a higher fps rate. For all other genres, get a 6D and I think you will be delighted with the results. You will be getting perhaps the best bang for your buck of any used full frame DSLR.
    I lost interest in reading about other cameras once I'd started to use my 6D. I'll use it until it dies on me, hopefully many years from now...
    You've done a great job in this video of describing what makes the 6D so good, but it's only when you actually have one in your hands and see the first results on your computer that you really comprehend how great it is!

    Too right about the Northrups' survey. I participated in that, thinking "That's right! That happened to me!" But really it was a cheap old Kingston that I hadn't used in a long time. I wasn't surprised it failed, I didn't care, I didn't try to get it to work or to recover anything from it. I just bought more trusted brands from then on, and kept the dust off.

    6D has been good camera for everything for me. I bought used 6D two years ago (January 2022) and I have now taken over 200 000 pictures with it. It is my first full frame camera ever and I’ve been taking pictures for 30 years or so. Getting full frame camera opened completely new world for me. Picture quality and being able to take pictures with way less light than with any of my cameras earlier were just mindblowing! But it had the same problem than all other cameras I have owned: when I’m taking pictures of wildanimals (most of my pictures) I sometimes miss the best shots because of the poor buffer. If I had the money I would buy Canon EOS R6 or something like that but so far I’ve never had the money to do so. I paid 400€ for 6D body and it was the max amount of money I could spend.

    Excellent job, thank you. When it came time to choose a body for Astro modification the original 6D was a no brainer. Excellent low low performance (even by todays standard’s regardless of what the spec sheet says), inexpensive and built like a tank. When shooting in remote locations there are a lot of variables (obstacles) but the 6D isn’t one of them. It just works. I also appreciate that Raw files are Raw and not a “version” of Raw like I find with my Sony. I love the Sony for specific purposes but it’s no 6D.

    The 6D power switch placement seems to be Canon’s deliberate targeting this camera towards a newbie photographer’s first camera or first full frame camera. Here’s your PASM dial and on/off switch. Turn it on, change your mode dial and start shooting. I don’t think they expected professionals to use this camera. My work around is I just turn the camera on and leave it on with GPS/Wifi disabled. With stand-bye/sleep enabled, a battery lasts for weeks.

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  8 месяцев назад

      That is exactly what I have gotten into the habit of doing, with this camera. Wifi and GPS off, auto off after one minute, and never touch the switch again. I don't see any negative hit to battery life at all and it makes the camera that much more enjoyable to use.

    The 6D is getting more love 10 years after it was released than it did at release. Reviewers routinely trashed its AF points, having only only 1 cross-type point, only 4.5 burst rate, one card slot, 97% viewfinder, etc. Only a few reviewers fully appreciated the image output back in the day. I now have R6 and R5. Both are phenomenal cameras, particularly the R6, but I do not believe the image output is any better than the 6D, which I sold to fund my upgrade. I have been thinking about getting a 6D again.

    I enjoyed the colors from my Digital Rebel (that's the first model) but hated using it from Day 1 --- yes I paid the retail $900 body only --- because I was angry that its ergonomics and slowness were an insult coming from the Elan II, which I still can't give up. On a lark I picked up a mint 50D once they bottomed out and was astonished at the improvement. A great camera I'll never use but still own. But it wasn't until the 6D two years ago that I finally got incredible colors and high ISO capability. The small size and thoughtful features like quiet mode are also great.
    One annoyance is the vestigial rear dial. Once you've experienced the large ones from the '90s models thru 5 series, it's hard to accept the small one on the 6D.
    That said, I've always resisted focus-and-recompose and the 6D is ultimately a heartbreak for me unless I do that. I am tempted by the R8 because I know it will change the way I shoot, letting me largely ignore focus and concentrate in the moment on composing, the very thing I've wanted ever since AF existed.

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  Год назад

      Interesting perspective. I owned the 50D but ended up not really liking it. I liked the 30D as well as the 70D, but the 50D was unique in some of the things they had changed during that time and I wasn't a fan of those changes. With focus, I have always set all of my cameras to use the center focus point, then done the basic focus and recompose. I started doing that back before I even knew there was a name for it or that other people also did it. To me, it just seemed faster and more reliable than messing around with trying to select other focus points for each and every photo. I have never had issues with it. The only time I am not doing focus and recompose, I am either manual focusing or I have my AF locked to a predetermined distance and then I wait for the intended subject to be in the right area before I take the photo. I am curious about your resistance to doing the focus and recompose method.

    • @thenexthobby
      @thenexthobby Год назад

      I won't claim my resistance has ever been rational; after all, focus-and-recompose is how many of us learned to use MF cameras. My beef is more philosophical. EOS cameras seemed to promise a way out of that, yet never fully did. We were told more focus points = better, but that was only maybe true for the most expensive models few ever bought.
      And so I kept trying to use focus points, but I'm now back to single point for my old cameras ... you know, there's irony here. I used single point AF on the Elan II because it only had 3 to begin with, even though that was fancy compared to a 650 or 620. and 5, 7, 9, 11 ... none of that really matters but that promise of improvement is where I got trapped for many years.
      Some were luckier to have an EOS 3 with 45 but "that many" focus points remained overall quite rare in most models, and even that level of sophistication didn't even reach the non-1D lines until their end!
      My feeling is that by watching Sony's AF success with mirrorless, Canon decided holding back great AF was no longer possible in lesser models.

    I've been shooting digital since 2006 and never had a card fail. Once, a single picture on a Sony card got corrupted. The card never gave me problems again. One of my Lexar 16GB 633X cards failed to register a picture, but that's because I was shooting in burst and the card was almost full. Once the images had buffered, the card worked again. That being said, one of my students had a Transcend SD card fail. However, it wasn't clear why. Maybe age was a factor because it was an old card her dad had given her. We tried formatting it, but that didn't work. A few months ago, a friend gave me four old CF cards. Three of them work, but the Lexar 64 MB (yes MB, it's from 2001) isn't readable. Considering the number of pictures I've taken, the reliability of cards is impressive.

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, that seems to mirror most of the experiences I have heard. A card technically can fail. We might even know of one or two cards owned by someone, somewhere, at some time that did fail in some way. But really, when it comes down to it, they are pretty reliable and failure isn't something that someone should actively worry about.

    I love the output (modified version of “standard” preset) but I can’t fall in love with the camera.
    The design of the camera feels unresolved compared to the 5D line - the classic is so beautiful with the squared off viewfinder.

    I've recently been toying with the idea of having multiple camera bodies and thought it might be crazy but now I know for sure that this is my goal. I have most of the lenses I will need save 1 or 2. My idea was to acquire the mark i and mark ii of the 5d, 6d and 7d series which will be 6 bodies in total. I think these 6 cameras were the pinnacle of Canon dslr's and almost each one bringing something different than the others to the table. Even though the 7d and 7d ii are apsc sensors I think they are the high end apsc cameras. As for people comparing the 6d to the 5d classic there was 1 person I found to do so. Unfortunately, that lead to multiple cameras that I really loved, and wish I still had, being back on my wish list. Some of those cameras are getting harder to find, especially for a reasonable price or in acceptable condition. I cannot tell you how much of a game changer it is to simply keep the cameras I like, even if that means I own up to a dozen at a time.

      The megapixel count really doesn’t matter, in this case. Even when comparing two full frame cameras to each other, the jump from 20mp to 24mp isn’t really noticeable. In your case, you have 24mp, but it’s a smaller APS-C sensor. Not only that, but the t7 has a rather strong antialiasing filter compared to the 6d. The t7 also has less color depth, less dynamic range, and far, far worse low light and high iso performance. The image processor in the t7 is also an older, less advanced image processor than what is in the 6d. Image quality wise, there is no comparison. The 6d is going to be an upgrade in every way.

    I have to disagree, I have both and unfortunately I’m using more the 6D because the 5D is broken but I’m considering selling the 6D because I don’t get the same tone straight out of the camera. Photos from the 6D are awesome but just not the same 🤷🏻‍♂️ at least to my eye.

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  9 месяцев назад

      Not exactly the same, no. But I find them to be remarkably similar, in most circumstances. Of course, there are a few scenarios where the two cameras do seem to render things in a less similar way.

    Man is correct , but of course camera manufacturers know it , and they now put IBIS in camera , and now i whos perfectly fine with 12mpix of 5D ,or 20 of 6D , want that IBIS , with IBIs i can use vintage lenses and they would be stabilized better then my 6D with IS lens . Of course subject movement can not be corrected by IBIS so i guess for fast shots ,action , and i dont mean sports , i mean my kid jumping in the pool , i dont need the IBIS , because shutter speed is so fast that i dont even need IS lens . But still i want that IBIS , and i wont get it with old camera , not even medium old camera , 5 or 6 years old camera at least if its FF . So i wont sell my gear , but i will look for IBIS and have one of those . Curranty looking at Panasonic S1 , but its going to take some time for the price to drop so before that i will get Nikon D700, that is another old camera that is special . Nikon made sensor for it , not Sony .

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  Год назад

      I love the D700. Great camera to own. Of course, modern cameras are great, too. Like you said, IBIS is very useful in many circumstances, even if it isn’t useful 100% of the time. The IBIS on my E-M5ii was phenomenally good. Between that and the insanely fast focus acquisition when using the screen to tap on the subject, that camera was a real game changer and allowed me to get photos I simply wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.

    Very interesting. I want to purchase a second camera as a back up for my NIkon D610. When I was researching buying the Nikon, the other camera I considered was the Canon 6D. While I like the Nikon very much, I do wish I had gotten the 6D. Now that I have the Nikon, I am considering either the 6D or the 5D classic. Which would you recommend?

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  Год назад

      Hmm… it’s hard to say, as the 5d and the 6d are both great cameras but seem to attract different types of people. I prefer the buttons, layout, and overall ergonomics of the 5d. The 5d just feels better in the hand, even to simply hold. The 6d has live view, video function, and phenomenal low light and high iso performance. The 5d has smaller files while still producing sharp, detailed photos with great color. The 6d makes it easier to get a good photo thanks to better autofocus and auto iso.
      They both produce beautiful photos that don’t need much editing (of any). They both have just one card slot. They both have a top display, control wheel, command dial, mode dial, etc. I think for most people, the 6d is the safest bet. It’s more modern and there is less of a learning curve, less limitations, etc.

    Is this better than 80d?

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  11 месяцев назад

      I guess it is really a matter of perspective. The 80D has more modern conveniences, like an articulating touch screen and dual pixel autofocus. So, if either of those things matter to you, it is the clear winner. The image quality from the 6D is better, though, and it does way better in low light. It also has the advantage of more easily getting wide angles of view or shallow depth of field, since it is full frame. I believe the 6D also has better battery life.
