I just discovered your channel and I am binge watching! I actually used to do minimalism when I was in grad school, when I first discovered the same guys you mention, the minimalist (Joshua and Ryan). But I don’t know what happened to me, and I “reverted” back. I think finding your channel was a reminder, that I should go back to what I was doing, because I felt so much better. I think I am just scared of commitment, and that’s why I didn’t stay with it. I have also been skirting around the idea of shaving my head for YEARS, but never took the plunge. The closet I came was cutting my hair really short, and I remember the euphoria I felt. In short, watching your channel made me remember how happy I was as a minimalist during my uni years and that I have a fear of commitment that I need to get over. Thank you, please make more videos! I’d love to see where your journey has taken you now.
I find asking: 1) Does this thing contribute to getting me where I want to go? 2) Do I need this thing to retain the memory? Just my 2 cents. (I'd like to hear her thoughts too!)
My husband is the KING of multiples! 🙈 He wouldn't let me throw out his old headphones yesterday but they are his "backup" headphones 🤦 lol I'm married to a maximist. Lol
My husband is the same way. Our house is overflowing with dust-covered knick knacks, unused kitchen appliances, clothes, etc. Whenever I confront him on it, he says "I like having this stuff and I'll always have a lot of stuff". It drives me insane.
I think with things like minimalism you have to let people change at their own speed. For me getting rid of all my clothes and shoes seems daunting because I love them. As I explore minimalism more, I start to question whether I really love them or the idea of them. If I loved them I would use them every day and it's slow process of questioning your motivations. I've made good process but I dont want to rush myself because it'll most likely make me revert. Anyway, if your significant other sees it makes you happy they'll most likely start making an effort to change, it will just be at their own pace.
Im not debating your point. But I carry back up earplugs on me where ever I go. I just somehow breake my headphones really often and use public transport alot and I cant stand it without music on :D
I personally can never find a single pair of earphones that fit all of my needs. I have several pairs that fit different situations and I use them all often.
Nurses are so special to me. I had cervical cancer, Stage 3...in remission for 2 years now. The nurses put me at ease, throughout the treatments. You rock ..!!
Loved your video. I really struggle with getting rid of notes, birthday cards, and stuff like that. I keep it all in a box and I look through it maybe twice a year. It’s hard to not save it because of the memories I have attached to those things
I want to declutter so I can travel for longer with peace of mind. My first solo trip was 50 days, but I brought hardly anything with me. Never felt so free while passing through security and no luggage claims.
⭐️ Keeping the end in mind ! Excellent video! I just decluttered my clothes again. I feel great and gained momentum for other areas. In several years of decluttering I have only repurchased one thing over $20. Not that big of a deal. The calm I experience from not storing all that stuff is priceless. I love it! It is so valuable in all areas of my life. Thanks for cheering us on! Hope you had fun on your trip!
Oh, man, the "have a space for everything" one is something I wish my family would do! They are terrible about just tossing things on whatever surface is nearby and next thing I know, that surface is a pile of mess. Put things back/away! How hard is it?! Feel my pain lol.
Every time you say "I hope that makes sense" I'm like "are you joking? that TOTALLY makes sense!" Been loving your videos - youtube keeps recommending more
I don't know why, but I find that a lot of INFJs and intjs are very attracted to minimalism. I think it has something to do with repressed extraverted sensing. They like to cut down on the sensual stimulation in their lives.
I decluttered one of my closets had so much gift bags that I would recycle it filled a whole trash bag it felt good to see space in my closet again 🤸🏻♂️🤸🏻♂️🙋🏻
I totally agree with you I think we have gone way overboard in thinking we need every shoe of every color and of everything or we are missing out on something awesome. Instead of actually living a better free life😁
For me it was being able to clean faster and more easily. Decluttering has helped so much in this area, as I now have less stuff to clean. I still feel like I could get rid of stuff but I m decluttering more slowly now that the big bulk of stuff is gone
Thank you for posting this video! My husband showed me a video of yours about the signs that you have too much stuff and I am so inspired. The tips you gave are SUPER helpful!
I’m back. Haha. Because of this video, I went home and purged my closet and I had the best sleep EVER. Thank you for the information you share! I appreciate you and what you do!
I appreciate these tips! I feel like my house is ALWAYS cluttered, and it even stresses me out when my dog goes into the livingroom, because they knock things off the coffee table. Things NEED to change, and I'm ready!
I could never go with a zip-bag just for important documents. There’s just sooo much stuff you’re obligated to keep for at least 10 years here in Germany, it’s taking up so much space ☹️ also, it’s weird that you don’t have to carry your insurance card and ID with you. I once got in trouble for not being able to show my ID 😂
I'm currently Prego 6 months & I haven't had to show id or insurance info at my appointments. Just last name & birthday. I haven't seen my insurance cards since last year and we are in mid may. Pointless little plastic buggers at this point
I love your videos! You have a nice, calming effect. Thank you, I’ve been trying to declutter and I feel like I’ve given so much stuff away and I still have tons. Makes me feel almost claustrophobic. But then I look around and I feel like it’s really not that much, but I am a crystal and gemstone collector, maybe that’s it lol Ps i love your plant in the background and your beautiful tattoo!!
You are so inspiring!! I need to declutter every part of my life, and you give me the motivation to start RIGHT NOW!! It's after midnight, and I want to jump out of bed to begin this journey!!! Thank you!! :)
I’m just decluttering because I have sooooo much stuff and I’d like to have a more clean look to my room. I get really easily attached to things so I could never become a full on minimalist but I’m hoping to be able to clean my space
New subscriber. Great info! I also recommend setting a time limit on how long you’ll hold onto the “sell” pile and if it doesn’t sell in that time you’ll either donate/give it away. I had some things in my sell pile for over a year. Some because I just couldn’t figure out where to sell it, but I knew it was worth $$ so I just kept it in a pile for over a year telling myself I would figure out where to sell it, and other things posted online thinking I could make money on it, but because of Marie Kondo everyone was selling and now the market was flooded and honestly it just wasn’t selling even if I lowered the cost.. So now I just moved on and have donated the items because my space is worth more than the money I never made...
I literally just subscribed haha but I would love a video on decluttering sentimental items! These tips have me wanting to throw away half of my room! Great content btw!~
I want to declutter, but I tend to hold on to things I don’t really need if they were gifts that people have given me, even though I never asked for them... but I don’t want to hurt the person if they happen to notice I no longer have what they gave me
Most of the time, people will never notice if things are gone. You can also say that you lent it to a friend or gave it to them because they loved it so much. Eventually, people will stop giving you "stuff" and realize you like to spend time etc instead. *Hopefully. ;)
I don't remember any of the shit i've given people for gifts over the years, except my dad (gave him a pair of pj,s that didn't fit very well anyway). But the point is a lot of people don't give great gifts and forget all about them anyway, so chances are you're just being hard on yourself. It's ok to let things go because it's the thought behind the gift that matters. So unless it was really expensive and you can sell or trade it for something of equal value, you can get rid of that mess.
i think marie kondo has a good method for mentally releasing things like this but i can't remember exactly what she says! perhaps look it up if you're interested. i will update if I can find out :)
Good video. A video about wether to keep sentimental items would be nice. In 2016 I got rid of the majority of my birthday cards and kept my favorite ones over the years. Iam not sure if throwing them away is wrong but at the same time I don't want a bunch of cards piled up in my room. I have a black binder with important papers too. Papers for my car, my passport, bank info stuff like that. It's nice to have one binder for everything. Every once in a while I will go through and get rid of papers I don't need anymore.
I did that too. I think keep a picture of each one of them if you feel guilty next time. I found I was hoarding on sentimental things and it was taking too much space. Funny how those people are not even in my life right now.
Oh and yes, I would totally want to see a video a about digital declutter!! I feel like that is still an area where I really have to put in aome work to reduce clutter.
Awesome tips! The two questions I ask are: if I were to move into a house 1/2 the size of the one I live in today, what would I bring with me and what would I get rid of? If I were to spend a year or three years or five years traveling abroad, what would I pay to store for that period of time?
My biggest struggle is my daughter's stuff, she has that OCD hoarding thing, I try to encourage her to give her stuff away to those who don't have stuff, or to make room for new stuff, but she won't. So I don't know how to purge her stuff without literally trespassing on her space and taking the stuff against her wishes. So maybe I could do a bin that I put in the shed and after a certain amount of time take it to Goodwill? I'm also freaked out about all the kids toys that get made which causes pollution and they will just end up in a landfill, and kids don't even play with toys anymore!
Im somewhere between a minimalist and a maximalist. Me and my boyfreind has lot of stuff. But things we never use or have no value I dont keep. And after a while my boyfreind is also doing this a bit. So gift card with nothing speciel written on is something we will get rid of. He has also start getting rid of clothing he doesent like because I have shown him thats okay. His ex girlfreinds and his parents never liked/likes what he wore and I have told him the most important thing is that he have things he loves and uses. :D We dont have a lot of money so rather keep things that you use a couple times a year because we dont have a lot of money. I hate how alot of minimalist makes you fell like you have to declutter all the time. It becomes a decluttering drug, and then you declutter stuff you use and will regret decluttering.
I started to declutter to help my head clear and to have a cleaner house. I want to be able to live life with out feeling the need to always buy the best and new things, I want to be content
So helpful. Which Ted talk are you referring to? Do you have a vid on what you keep in your bag? Also, I used to rock your exact hair cut eons ago and I am so jelly when I watch you because you're stunning with it. Thanks!
What about small gifts that friends give you from parties or weddings? I have so many trinkets from those types of events and i feel bad throwing them away.
I throw that stuff right in a discard pile. I really don’t keep any trinkets of anything anymore. Read “The Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo. It’s very much what she talks about and it’s life changing.
This is exactly why I did not do wedding favors at my wedding. I'm not convinced that people actually enjoy them. Best case scenario, it's something edible that isn't going to just stay around forever. But out of all the wedding favors I've gotten, the only one I've kept was a bottle opener, because at least I can actually use that.
This was so helpful! You said some things i've never heard before and reminded me of others. My main mental note I have is the next time I move, what am I willing to move?
This was so helpful! Also, if you love personality tests, you should check out the enneagram, it’s wayyyy more accurate and life changing! Helps you know yourself and others and be able to resolve issues etc!
Your videos are really great. I feel that clothing is more or less easy when it comes to minimalism. My problem is books, very heavy books. What would your advise be on that? Also, if you're studying and making art, you end up with a lot of notebooks and sketchbooks. Digital note taking and ebooks are not for everyone. How did you stop being attached to things like books?
If the books are for pleasure then it's up to you to decide whether it's more important to have the collection or to have the freedom of space. Maybe just keep your top 10 or if that's too hard or top 20 favorites and then give away or sell the others. Find a number that's good for you and then try only buying one or two books at a time and then once you read them sell them to a used book store and use that opportunity to get a new one. If a book somewhere functional like for school I sold all of them at the end of the semester and that I didn't think I would need and at the end of nursing school I sold all but two. You don't have to do it overnight, but I know the attachment is real. I went through a phase where I was moving so much and so looking around books was super annoying for me, but my attachment to them is starting to build up again and I'm trying to keep my number at 10
There are so many good restaurants and museums in Chicago! Enjoy your trip! I definitely need to work on minimizing more, but I find that between work and school and stress, I don't feel like I have enough time to do that. Do you have any tips or advice for trying to balance a million things AND declutter? or your planning system? (just found your organization video, oops. I figured at least one of my questions might already be answered)
Accept them and then donate. The purpose of a gift is for the giver to show they care about you and were thinking of you. Once the gift is given and recieved it is yours to do with what you wish. Learning that tip from Marie Kondo was incredibly freeing for me.
Hiya love your videos. I am a horder (not too bad but trying to manage it) I tried decluttering and it was too painful, so instead I'm nesting! Here are a few things that help my process for anyone wanting to declutter but finding it tough Do I need it, love it or want it more than I need, would love or want the space NOISE, everything has noise, when you come in contact with the item what does it feel or sound like, does it make you smile and are you glad to see it or does it send out bad noise; guilt (oh you can't fit into that but you love it you have to keep it, oh it cost so much so even tho it doesn't fit you have to keep it). Is this me NOW? Is this something I currently can do? or is it something I can't do now and don't need Is this my story? this is for things that belong to others who have left your life but you still keep. If its not your hobby and not yours do you want to keep it around Categorising stuff helps. putting related items together shows you how much of something you have, for example wardrobes, if you put all your items in piles and then if you want to go for it into colour groups within that first, it makes it easy to find things, second you can see you already have like you said 3 tops that colour and design. and if something doesn't fit anymore bag it, put it at the top of the wardrobe, put a date on it and if you still don't fit into it in the amount of time you allowed its OK to ditch it. It takes the guilt out of opening the wardrobe, when you can open the door and know that anything you see will fit you it feels so much better Categorizing in every room helps, it stops you buying doubles of things. and you know where to find stuff. Be kind to yourself When you find it hard to declutter be kind, go slow take it in baby steps. put a box in the porch or in your car and put one item in it every day, you won't notice one item leave and at the end of the week take the bag to the charity place of your choice. Declutter places out of sight first! Changing things can feel scary, doing inside a cupboard or drawer can be a good place to start as you can close the door or drawer and not see it. Once you have a GAP you can then use that gap to declutter into, so your maybe pile can have a box in that cupboard, give it a while if you didn't go there you didn't need it. Its ok to be sad when things leave. Endings can hurt, letting go of stuff can hurt. Its ok to need time to process this. Lots of videos about doing the deed 'letting it go, moving on and all that' but sometimes you also need time to honour things;thank them for the good times you shared, for the people they reminded you of, before they can leave your living space. Know its ok to do that. If old patterns are holding you back from your decluttering process there is a great book called The 4 Agreements. SOmetimes our old patterns, ways of being that we have been taught or lived for a long time are the routines we follow, this is a great book for recognising them. There was another book called What is your clutter trying to tell you'. that was a good book too, it said 'set a timer for 15 minutes and declutter, then take 5 minute break away from it all, then come back and repeat. Its good because if you have lots to go through you don't start flipping through that book, you just say, it can stay, it can go or I need to look through this first but you don't loose time looking through it. I found that helpful but intense when you have emotional conenection to what you are going through, in those cases, yes set timer so you don't over think it but just taking one item from a room, each day, or each time you pass it, can be a way to still declutter and achieve but slowly so there isn't the sudden eeek of a big change in your environment. soz ramble much. You don't need these tips you have it down, but when you have lived somewhere 20 years and have memories of all the stuff its a bit of a different process. Like you I came from a low income start and you get in that mindset that you need to hord supplies while they are there. and it takes time to unplug from that.
My self confidence has gone through the roof since Ive gotten rid of most of my clothes. I now feel like I look great in anything I put on!

Please make a minimalism video on sentimental stuff, thank you! These tips are so helpful :)
Hannah Barnes im sure you can find a million of them on RUclips already
@@ShaunaKayKay Thanks that's true, but they're not by Janell Kristina!
I came in to ask for just the same thing. Sentimental and digital, too.
I find asking:

2) Do I need this thing to retain the memory?
Just my 2 cents. (I'd like to hear her thoughts too!)

Yes on sentimental items! I'm attempting to transition to more minimalism but I'm worried about giving something away that means something to me.
A really great summation. I have to remember that I want to simplify my life not just organize the stuff that I own.

So maybe I could do a bin that I put in the shed and after a certain amount of time take it to Goodwill? I'm also freaked out about all the kids toys that get made which causes pollution and they will just end up in a landfill, and kids don't even play with toys anymore!
Love your minimalist video! 😄💞
Ohhh the #wakandaforever hashtag got me!
Thanks for the tips and safe travels!
I love your videos, i love you, you look so good, excelent videos, good advices.
OMG I watched that Ted Talks episode I believe it was on minimalism👍🏼
Im somewhere between a minimalist and a maximalist. Me and my boyfreind has lot of stuff. But things we never use or have no value I dont keep. And after a while my boyfreind is also doing this a bit. So gift card with nothing speciel written on is something we will get rid of. He has also start getting rid of clothing he doesent like because I have shown him thats okay. His ex girlfreinds and his parents never liked/likes what he wore and I have told him the most important thing is that he have things he loves and uses. :D
We dont have a lot of money so rather keep things that you use a couple times a year because we dont have a lot of money.
I hate how alot of minimalist makes you fell like you have to declutter all the time. It becomes a decluttering drug, and then you declutter stuff you use and will regret decluttering.
Yes re video on sentimental things
I started to declutter to help my head clear and to have a cleaner house. I want to be able to live life with out feeling the need to always buy the best and new things, I want to be content
a digital clutter vid would be interesting
I have trouble organizing papers. I'd love to know more info on what you put in your zip lock thing and folder.
Just watched three of your videos. New subscriber!
So helpful. Which Ted talk are you referring to? Do you have a vid on what you keep in your bag?
Also, I used to rock your exact hair cut eons ago and I am so jelly when I watch you because you're stunning with it. Thanks!
Omg I love you. New subbie! 🧡
What about small gifts that friends give you from parties or weddings? I have so many trinkets from those types of events and i feel bad throwing them away.
Take a picture of it. You can also make a cute picture collage of pictures from the event plus a picture of the trinket to remember :)
I throw that stuff right in a discard pile. I really don’t keep any trinkets of anything anymore. Read “The Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo. It’s very much what she talks about and it’s life changing.
gosh i hate those so messy if u start collecting them 😂
For me it’s the person who gave it you, didn’t want to bring you burden, but joy. Donate, rehome, or repurpose.
Your tank tops are adorable and appear to be so comfy! ❤️ where do you purchase your clothes?
Good tips. Could you do a top 5 tips?
This was so helpful! Also, if you love personality tests, you should check out the enneagram, it’s wayyyy more accurate and life changing! Helps you know yourself and others and be able to resolve issues etc!
What are ethical clothing brands you recommend on a budget?
Lol, I watched that Ted talks last night! Great video.
K Catfish
What's the talk/speaker?
Did you say nurse? If so, you have a new subbie. I dont mind when the nursing language slips in the videos. Im a nurse too. Thanks for the grear tips.
jummyberry me too🤫
I’m an ER nurse!
What if you live with a partner and they keep collecting, buying etc. stuff? The more of my stuff I get rid of, the more my partner seems to buy...
I would dump the partner. Prefer
a partner who dresses and owns
minimal things but high quality.
Then you travel more easily as well. More money too.
Awesome video.
I went through a phase where I was moving so much and so looking around books was super annoying for me, but my attachment to them is starting to build up again and I'm trying to keep my number at 10
Please make digital decluttering video!
I hope you enjoy your trip in Chicago :)
Can you do a video on everything that you own
I love your watch is it a Fossil Georgia?
There are so many good restaurants and museums in Chicago! Enjoy your trip!
I definitely need to work on minimizing more, but I find that between work and school and stress, I don't feel like I have enough time to do that. Do you have any tips or advice for trying to balance a million things AND declutter? or your planning system? (just found your organization video, oops. I figured at least one of my questions might already be answered)
Enjoyed the video, declutterer.
can you talk about presents/souvenirs that people give to you which you know you're never going to use but you don't feel polite not accepting them?
Rayn yes!
Accept them and then donate. The purpose of a gift is for the giver to show they care about you and were thinking of you. Once the gift is given and recieved it is yours to do with what you wish. Learning that tip from Marie Kondo was incredibly freeing for me.
This woman is so beautiful.
How do you get by on a 5 day trip with a low budget?
Stay at a hostel or airbnb. One with a kitchen, so you can cook your own meals most of the trip. Familiarize yourself with public transit.
Hiya love your videos. I am a horder (not too bad but trying to manage it) I tried decluttering and it was too painful, so instead I'm nesting!
Here are a few things that help my process for anyone wanting to declutter but finding it tough
Do I need it, love it or want it more than I need, would love or want the space
NOISE, everything has noise, when you come in contact with the item what does it feel or sound like, does it make you smile and are you glad to see it or does it send out bad noise; guilt (oh you can't fit into that but you love it you have to keep it, oh it cost so much so even tho it doesn't fit you have to keep it).
Is this me NOW? Is this something I currently can do? or is it something I can't do now and don't need
Is this my story? this is for things that belong to others who have left your life but you still keep. If its not your hobby and not yours do you want to keep it around
Categorising stuff helps. putting related items together shows you how much of something you have, for example wardrobes, if you put all your items in piles and then if you want to go for it into colour groups within that first, it makes it easy to find things, second you can see you already have like you said 3 tops that colour and design. and if something doesn't fit anymore bag it, put it at the top of the wardrobe, put a date on it and if you still don't fit into it in the amount of time you allowed its OK to ditch it. It takes the guilt out of opening the wardrobe, when you can open the door and know that anything you see will fit you it feels so much better
Categorizing in every room helps, it stops you buying doubles of things. and you know where to find stuff.
Be kind to yourself
When you find it hard to declutter be kind, go slow take it in baby steps. put a box in the porch or in your car and put one item in it every day, you won't notice one item leave and at the end of the week take the bag to the charity place of your choice.
I feel miserable about my clutter and can't get started. Maybe someday soon I hope 😔
Hi Janell! How did you find the tour group you mentioned? Is there a website?
