I used to buy books. Tons of books but I no longer do. I get my books from the library or borrow from a friend. If I do buy a book it's from a thrift store. I also no longer buy makeup. I will buy mascara and lip balm but that's it. I haven't worn full face makeup for many many many years and I feel my skin has only benefited from it. I don't always like my complexion but I figure, that's what my skin looks like so just accept it. I no longer buy products that aren't all natural. I want products that are friendly to the environment and to my body.
Great choices. I too don't buy or use lots of makeup, it's definitely something that doesn't need to be purchased in excess! It's nice to let skin be as it is, so good for you! And my boyfriend also loves getting books from the library (instead of buying them) :) xx
honestly, if one eats healthy, works out and focuses on mental health, one will see that they automatically need lesser stuff to live. Everything they wear will look great on them, they will feel good no matter what.
Exactly! Eat healthy, then you don't as much stuff in your kitchen, because healthy is also simple, and you will need less items to aid you around the house too, as you lose weight and get physically more flexible. Work out, and you'll have less addictions, because your mind will be naturally clear, focused and calm, and you won't hate yourself as much, negating the need to compensate with drugs or addictive substances :D
1) Purses 2) Large wallets 3) Jewellery 4) Souvenirs and Knick knacks 5) Pre-made sauces and seasonings 6) Lotion 7) Body wash 8) Sales promotions 9) Items not yet used up You're welcome.
I think that’s part of growing up and being mature. When you’re young you wanted to experiment with everything. You wanted to feel like “an adult”. Then you realize what’s really important to you and what is not. You’ve found your personal style. You are confident with your own choices. So anything doesn’t fit in your lifestyle can be eliminated.
I'm actually trying this minimalist thing and my sister walks in and starts telling me "This isint you! Treat yourself! You live once and enjoy all the things you can get!" OMG lol im stuck now too
You can buy something else. I dont buy things anymore. I'm saving for traveling and own house. Every little stuff what I'm not buying is more money for something else!
When I travel I get a souvenir magnet from the place. So my fridge has lots of magnets. I find it takes up no space and it's good way to display and remember the places have visited.
I love magnet's and they don't take up a lot of space. I also love bags. I use bags for everything from toting my laundry to taking them when I go shopping as opposed to using paper or plastic.
I wish I was a small purse kinda girl! I need my whole wallet, house keys, work keys, chapstick, mirror, headphones, charger, pads and tampons, everything. You need it? I got it. Mary Poppins is my middle name!
Ah me too! I also have 2 littles and hate carrying around a purse and a diaper bag so I just use a big purse for everything. I also throw my lunch in it when I go to work, and it can also fit any work documents and my iPad that I need to take to/from work. I keep a bigger size wallet that can fit my phone and convert into a purse if I dont need to take my big purse with me, or I'll leave my big purse in my truck to run into the store.
@@meghanlivingstone i wish i could use a small purse. I need my backpack but it has medication i need to carry and my sunglasses power bank tablet and headphones. I have severe vertigo and migraines. Music helps me get through it
@@naurafadiya I find it hard to minimize in books. Specially when the library is cleaning their stock and have some awesome books for 10 cents each. Or the next small town that is just plain giving them away. I find it extremely hard to resist.
@@amec8782 maybe you can sort them after you read. Like when after you read some uninteresting books, you can sell them again. I personally banning myself to buy more books when i still have more than 10 unread books and only buy books i am really2 interested in (like think twice before buying it) also find some alternatives like borrowing while i can :)
I’m a firm believer in stocking up. I drive an hour and a half to the city for groceries, so I only shop once per month. In the winter, even once a month can be risky, so I stock up on beans, grains and frozen fruits and veg for a 4-5 month period. I store everything dry in glass jars and vacuumed seal quarts of grains and beans for the winter. I’m careful to rotate my freezer and have a list of the freezer contents and lay out that I update every time I take something out. Since moisture, air and light are the enemies of dry foods, eliminate those to keep stores fresh when you just can’t pop out to the shops every time you want something.
I drive about 30 minutes to stores and even in the winter that can be too far and dangerous. I also stock up because I work a lot of 10 hour days so the last thing I want to do after that is stop at a store. I find that if I have to stop when I'm tired and hungry I can be wasteful with my money.
Absolutely -- stocking up can be extremely useful and even important or a lot of people. I do like having a few things extra in the freezer, etc. I just try to avoid buying too much of what I won't need or end up using :) Thanks for watching!!
this is so interesting. we get bad winters too but nothing like this! i know this winter is supposed to be particularly bad, so everyone be safe in advance ❤️ take care
We'r only a traveler in this world That's my mom use to say I thought its jst an excuse not to buy those things we can't afford But trully now I understand
I’ve been on a journey to simplify since graduating in March as a consumer health librarian and I must say- shopping only when you need something or after you’ve carefully considered it, really makes your life simple! The money and stress saved by being intentional and now- ecofriendly- has been great!
I guess I'm a potential minimalist! I have one mini backpack and wear the same clothes over and over, (I just buy basics in different colours) and I have two pair of shoes lol whenever I find something I haven't used in a long time I donate or throw away.
The way ypu have come to live is how I have always lived. This is partly because I grew up 'poor' so material overload was not an issue - then I moved to NYC as a music student, and my husband and I shared a TINY apartment near Lincoln Center. Much of my life has been travelling. So - - NO jewelry - I used to wear earrings occasionally but really - I have enough trouble finding socks that match! - Wardrobe very simple, with some good quality things that will look good for years (coats/jackets).and basic tees/tops and jeans/slacks that you really want to buy fresh every year or two. So don't buy many at one time! Same with shoes. And underwear. - Bags - I have 3. A small leather cross-body that basically holds small wallet and cell phone - a smallish leather backpack - and a fabric tote for books/notebooks. - Personal Care - I use Bronners Liquid Peppermint Soap to wash me and my hand laundry. For YEARS. Minimal makeup. No fancy creams - coconut oil, olive oil, a rose oil maybe. 'Pampering'myself is not my idea of fun. - NO 'stocking up.' Like - enough toilet paper, paper towels and cleaning products (dish soap, vinegar, baking soda, bleach, laundry soap) for a month. I do my basic household shopping once a month, so I don't have to stop for toilet paper along the way. - KITCHEN is minimalist and basically vegetarian. NO prepared ANYTHING. There's good Olive Oil and Coconut Oil. There's herbs (from my garden) and spices (in small quantities for freshness). There's brown and white rice, but no pasta because I don't like pasta. There's dry beans and peas. And some walnuts. Maybe a2 jars of good preserves. And some teas. In fridge - ALWAYS several kinds of fruits & veggies but I buy small quantities and don't waste. There's usually good whole milk yogurt and/cheese. GOOD olives. Butter. Eggs from farmers market. That's it. Occasionally a little meat or fish. I just turned 71. I've never been overweight and never dieted. I've never wanted a lot of stuff. And I've always been healthy!
@@cracticustibicen6374 - Tees, jeans, underwear, socks and shoes wear out. Especially because I don't buy many at once. Jeans and tees are my everyday clothes, I live an active outdoor life and things get worn. 'Good' clothes are worn much less often and last for years.
I can’t stop buying things on amazon. I just looked at my prime card. I have charged over $1000.00. The last time when I paid off the $1500 limit I promised myself I would not buy everything in sight. I usually forget that I have the items after a short while and most of the time I don’t use them.
My spending was out of control because of impulse buying, so I "detoxed" myself with a no shopping ban in the stores where there are the most temptations. I now only shop for things I need, Google specifically for that item, then purchase the best deal I can. Thanks for the tips, will look at even more things to stop buying.
PrincessofErised that’s a great idea, especially if you find yourself way too tempted in certain stores. I think a “shopping detox” is a great thing to do!
I have a hard time not buying souvenirs when I travel so I get a few postcards from each trip, it fulfilled my need to shop, they’re cheap and small, and I can look back on them to remember the trip!
That’s a good idea. I only buy Christmas tree ornaments for souvenirs. That way the tree is special and the family can reminisce on the trip/life event that it represents
I literally don't buy any of these things you just said. Who knew I was a minimalist 😄 I own a single pair of gold earings that i've been using for more than 7 years, and that's the only accessory that I wear. I have no purses but a single wallet that i keep in my Jean's pocket. Since I live in a tropical country coconut oil is the easiest to get, i use it for pretty much everything. I only do online shopping for clothes and takes forever to select one as I make sure I really like it. I've never used body wash, just bars of soap. I don't wear an ounce of make up, may be occasional sunscreens if I've to stand under direct sunlight.
Almost the whole of Indian middle and below is like that. In fact after coming to Canada I realized one more thing..I I think we are the least makeup using country. Here in west, people actually use makeup. All the things which I use to wonder in Indian malls..who buys..lol.. I compare that to India...women hardly wear any.
I only have eight pairs of shoes-two pairs of everyday sneakers that I alternate so they can “breathe,” one pair of “combat boots” that are part of my firehouse dress blues or working uniform, one pair of black high-top Reebok’s that pass for business shoes or semi-dressy occasions, a pair of snow boots, a pair of rain boots, a pair of slippers for cold nights in winter, and a pair of cold-weather boots that I’m thinking of selling because they’re half a size too large and make my socks bunch around my feet. That’s all I really need. Besides, high heels and high arches are a lethal combination I don’t go anywhere fancy enough to warrant them anyway.
when I was on a budget I was buying the shittiest body wash, lotion & shampoo from Walmart. But now I buy eco-friendly soap and use more natural oils, which are actually more expensive.
Yeah my thoughts exactly on so many of those minimalism videos. Like wtf you don’t feed the economy like you used to do, that’s not automatically minimalism
Costco organic coconut oil replaces shaving gel/ make removing oils / body and face moisturizer. Muslin cloths or face towels instead of disposable facial wipes Soap tip - I hate bar soap and feel it’s unsanitary. Use a cheese grater and grate the soap. Boil 16 oz bottled water . Add the grated soap and stir until completely melted. Let it cool overnight. Stir in the morning and pour into an old body wash bottle .
Meghan Livingstone its a game changer The Costco wash clothes are 24 for $13 Muslin ones there are a ton on line . I got the Liz Earle . I just wash it daily with liquid soap and hang dry and then once a week to do deep clean and make it white and bright with ua cheap bar soap . This soap trick works well on the Costco wash cloths to keep white . My face is sooo nice and soft with the coconut oil
Inger Helen Ruste Houg I did a lot of research and the coconut oil I use is organic and cold pressed. I do use organic argon oil but I use that as a moisturizer. Coconut oil is cheaper and really removes all the makeup. It’s better than all the harsh chemicals in face wipes and face washes . My face wash is organic and with argon oil . ( my friend has her own organic line based on argon and sells to a major retailer) she has done tons of research as well I have been doing this for over 4 years and my face is never better. I get compliments all the time and pp are always asking for my regimen
I don't buy your same things I swear, except face lotions because I have extremely dry skin an I need to use both lotion and oil, and no soap because it makes me smell not good. Also everytime I travel I learned to make smaller luggages, and the fact I don't buy all these things you told helped me a lot. I feel a lot free now, and that's awesome. Material things makes us unhappy the most of the times.
My family and I are preparing to live in an RV full time, just me my fiancé our little 9 month old and our dog! So we are working so hard to get rid of things and become minimal as we will be living in a tiny home. We just made a great purchase of a NOOK so that I don’t have to buy books and have them ALLOVER the place anymore and that was one of my first steps to becoming a little bit minimal :)
It really depends where I'm going. If I'm going out for an entire day I would bring a separate bag such as a lunch bag that I used to bring to my previous workplace, or another bag for picnic items, etc. Otherwise, I can get water if I'm at a restaurant or something like that. But I work from home so this is not really an issue for me.
silverrain84fly Not everyone is needs that. My body does not need the constant input of fluid so it is a personal thing. But if I want something like a little food or drink or a warm top etc, I might take a slightly larger bag but it would be only full of those things. I do usually have some tissues, a lipstick and a small brush, but thats all.
I agree with the majority of what you said. But, as a single parent, I don’t have the luxury of running out of things. I must be prepared...as nice as it would be to just buy stuff when I felt like it. Also, with shopping online for groceries & other household items, I find that I spend much less. I am only purchasing my standard bi-weekly items that I always get and not sidetracked by everything in store. I love that! Much less spending! ❤️
Tara Berg stocking up can definitely be a good and very useful thing! There are things I like to have extra in the freezer, etc. Also that’s great that online shopping helps you spend less - I don’t shop a ton online but I’d like to try it more!
Tara Berg I do online grocery shopping too! i eat better and save money because it takes me less effort so it's more likely to become a habit, I couldn't keep up the regularly weekend grocery shopping and would buy meals for lunch everyday as a result. After a while of online shopping, I thought let me shop in a real store and maybe I was being too 'lazy'?, I came home with sore elbows, lots of unplanned food purchases, twice my budget and just really irritated because I couldn't calmly make my purchasing decisions. Online grocery shopping is working Smarter not harder.
I’m a girly girl so I love jewellery but like clothes I try to buy good quality stuff. Plus I was given a mirror jewellery cabinet for my birthday a couple of years ago. Best item ever! Organised everything and no boxes cluttering up space. I believe the key is to buy higher quality items. You can’t afford as much stuff but it’s nicer when you do get it and you appreciate it more.
I’m entirely on your wavelength!! It’s so refreshing for me to hear your suggestions - all of them I’ve done for a long time but all my family and friends think I’m crazy ...thank you
I broke out with perioral dermatitis on my face last year and terrible eczema/hives on my body that would not go away even after multiple trips to the walk in clinic and dermatologist. This forced me to take a step back and look at what I put in my body as well on my body. Over the course of a few months, I was forced to only clean my face with water and witch hazel, quit wearing makeup, moisturize only with simple oils like coconut, marula, argan, shea, etc. The less I put on my skin, the faster it healed. I also cut out processed foods and ended up going vegan. All of this has led me to do most of the same things you mentioned in this video. I make my own salad dressings, quit buying makeup, lotions, started using simple bar soap, cleaned up my pantry obviously since all of the processed foods were gone. We don't always think about what we put in our bodies or on our bodies until it may be too late. I sure wish I realized this long ago!
I really love this video, it's helped me put a lot of things into perspective as I transition to minimalism! I never considered the sales promotions thing, it makes me want to go purge my inbox and unsubscribe from all the rubbish i get sent. I will say, in regards to the last point you made about only buying what you need and not being tempted by a sale; sometimes when you're a bit tight financially it can be really beneficial to buy that extra box of oats while they're on sale, or that extra bag of pumpkin seeds etc. I look forward to a day i don't have to continuously think ahead like that and can buy what i need in the moment, but for anyone in the same situation as me, don't feel guilty for buying ahead with the occasional item!
So I know this comment is 3 years later. Just discovered your videos though. I don't travel a lot. So I'm thinking if I want a souvenir, then I'll go ahead and probably get one. That being said, I'd only get something that is unique, or me and brings me joy. Glad we are all different though and what we want or do.
Me too! I used to buy Snicker every 2/3 months, but now I just have 1 shoes for every purpose like 1 shoe for casual, 1 for sport, etc. Very helpful!!!! Thanks
Ive stopped buying spray cleaner, i use vinegar and water and essential oil and make my own, i also stopped getting my nails done, i just keep them natural.
Cleaners are definitely a waste of money. I've even thought of using whatever hand soap or dish soap you use to clean things. I've only had my nails done professionally a few times, used to do them myself but with the kinds of jobs I've had doing anything to them besides filing or clipping when needed is kinda a waste anyways.
Thanks for sharing! It so happen that I have exactly the same buying habit as yours and I am so thrilled to know that someone out there thinks the same as I do. No longer feel weird! I have also made myself give up one item whenever I decided to buy a new one, especially clothing. This way I think twice before buying. Ditto on bar soap as well. I now use handmade soap with natural oils. So much better for the environment, as our skin!
I do already do not buy these things except the “purse” one ... but thinkng to do that too after ur video ... love to follow simple living, high thinking 😇
I don't buy pocket packs of tissues. I don't buy coffee from a shop except for social chats. I don't buy body wash or shaving cream. I was using avocado oil as moisturizer, but now I'm using up all of the body moisturizers we have in the house first. Might do cocoa butter bars instead because they work as hair texturizer and moisturizer. I don't buy purses or wallets because I never want to swap them. Don't buy dresses because I never wear them. Don't buy juice. (I drink iced tea or smoothies instead.) I don't buy nail polish or powder makeup. There are still things I buy too much of, though, like clothing. Working on it.
I carry a giant bag cause I have kids 😂 Bag has first aid, allergy friendly snacks, small toys, extra diaper, clothing, hair comb, a purse, water bottle, tissue, emergency change, my tablet. All kinds of stuff in that thang. I always gotta save the day 😂
I have fine hair and no longer use conditioner - instead I put in 2 tablespoons of white vinegar in a large cup of water to Rinse my hair. It also cleans out any residual from shampoo or hair products, leaves your hair squeaky clean and bright. You can rinse your hair again to remove it or leave in as it dries the smell will dissipate. Money saving too.
Mix two parts olive oil to one part vinegar (I use balsamic or apple cider vinegar or rice wine vinegar) or lemon juice. Add salt and pepper to taste. You can get creative with herbs and add some too. I use dried dill often, parsley...garlic powder...etc.
I'm in the beginning stages of paring down. I moved twice recently and that gave me a great reason to donate and give away while figuring out how I want my life to look, possessions-wise. Your video mirrors the ideas I've come up with and reinforce I'm on the right track for me. Thanks.
@@meghanlivingstone for me, the decision to minimize was so my lifestyle would reflect my values. Being congruent feels better than a new outfit or shoes ever could. You're welcome.
About the "sales and coupons". The company I work for will actually yell at you and ask you why you didn't collect an email at the end of each sale. Because that email sends you sale notifications. If anyones reading this please never be rude when someone asks for your email😭 Just say no politely.
Yes, ladies, don't take it personally. You are just doing your job. Keep smiling 😃 and you could even give a hint that "your boss made you do it" or something to lighten things up with a customer.
I just stumbled upon this video and it’s really making me think...especially your comment about no more body washes. I’m concerned about the plastics piling up in America but I’m contributing to it...when my current bottle is empty I will switch back to bar soap with just a paper wrapper to recycle. Thanks for making me THINK about this!
The items you mentioned are things I dont buy anymore either. I never buy household cleaners. I make all my own from simple things like vinegar, lemon juice, alcohol, and plain dish soap.
Meghan Livingstone you should check out the cleanmyspace channel if you havent already. They have so many ideas on simple cleaning tips and ideas, recipes for homemade cleaners as well!
Sherri Guzman thank you for your reply. I will try vigegar & alcohol, take you but alcohol on its own to mix with this. & thank you for suggesting Pinterest & that RUclips channel, I’ve subscribed to it
I don't believe in keeping up with The Joneses as they say, I get a car paid for and drive it until it just needs to be replaced. I have a very low maintenance yard that only needs to be mowed. It's not boring, actually it's beautiful, it just doesn't need upkeep except for trimming a tree or two every year. I used to decorate every inch of space and realized that I was tired of letting which room needed to be tackled rule my days. I'm a Goodwill shopper and a yard saler, so I will say that I do have an abundance of clothes that need to be gone through, but the things I get rid of will go back to Goodwill. I love all of your tips! Soon, I will be living on wheels and everything I own will have to be gone through and downsized. I look forward to only keeping the things I absolutely love! That might be more of a struggle than I realize, but I will get through it. I'm going to try to get down to only 10 items that are decorative. Clothing will be a process because I won't truly know what I need until I get out there and live the lifestyle. Wish me luck!
I like a clean look, so nothing (or a minimal few things) on countertops and desk. I even put the toaster away after using it. I find if things are put away or in drawers, you find out (after a time) you don't need them. If I haven't used something in a year or two, out it goes. Out of sight, out of mind. I also do the same with clothes; Hang things in the closet on hangers BACKWARDS. Then after a time, downsize clothes that are still hung backwards (not used). I've been able to empty some drawers & closets this way. Love this, anything you can add to DOWNSIZE is great. 👍🏻
I like the way you speak.. Since 4 years ago, I've stopped buying something that i didn't need, it's nice. But recently I like shopping and waste my money just for nothing. Your video motivates me to get my minimalism life back. Love you from Indonesia 😘
You'd be surprised how much cleaner a kitchen can look once you remove the 8,000 magnets on a refrigerators... OMG! Such clutter!!! No more nick-backs for me.
This video is old-ish, but I wanted to comment and say how much this video actually changed my life. All my life I was taught to be cheap, then when I moved in with my mother (my parents are separated), she taught me to indulge and I became a hardcore impulsive buyer -- and I didn't even make that much, so it was very depressing to me. In my search for wanting to expand my knowledge of my debts and change my mindset/way of living, I found this video and all of the suggestions, I took to heart. It almost makes me cry to remember how it felt, like I couldn't say no to a new purse even though I knew I'd get tired of it, and the sales promotions that caught me time and again.. and now, I think carefully about everything I'm purchasing or subscribing to and haven't looked back since. More or less, thank you for this video. It's meant the world to me, and done a world of good to my life. It's wild to imagine even such simple suggestions can change how someone lives.
Hi Marisa! Wow, I'm so happy that you loved this video. Good for you for taking control of impulsive habits -- it can be hard. Sending you big huge hugs!! xoxo
That small purse may work for you now but just wait till you get old. I need a bigger bag for my extra hearing aid batteries, prescription sunglasses/glasses cases, and pill minder for my 12 prescriptions. Getting old is not fun. Besides I always need tissues and a pen and hair brush can be handy to have.
I have 2 purses. One is medium size and tan and the other is large and black so I can go either way depending on what I need to carry around. And since they are basic colors they will go with anything I choose to wear that day.
thank you for making this video, it's inspiring me to donate the jewelry and purses i don't really ever wear/use! I have gradually switched out personal hygiene products with simple alternatives: stopped buying lotion - now use argan oil for face + body stopped buying body wash - now use bronners stopped buying shampoo - bronners for the win, 2-3x week stopped buying conditioner - apple cider vinegar 1-2x a week in a spritzer bottle stopped buying face wash - raw honey! I also don't wear perfumes/scented prods anymore, caus I have friends who are really sensitive to fragrance (they get severe headaches/sore throat, and often have to leave social events), and I want to honor them. tbh i used to feel a bit annoyed by fragrance sensitivity, but its been a really good lesson for me in taking seriously the experiences of others, even in seemingly small ways.
Agrer on all EXCEPT on skincare. Invest on the best skincare for your face. Do NOT save money on sunscreen AND moisturizer. Your face will thank you when you are 40!!
I can't afford to travel always so when I do I buy a ref magnet as a souvenir. Makes me happy seeing them and remembering happy moments. I bring everything to work so I can't do small purse. In case I need something, I don't have to go back home since I don't have a ride. I walk to work 😂
Super different from the usual "thing I don't buy anymore". You gave me a different perspective on things I didn't even notice I still buy even though I am minimalist
Some great tips here, I just use almond oil now as a moisturiser, it's great. I've gone back to flannels (wash cloths) and a mild soap as a make up remover (my mum used to and her skin was beautiful) No other regime and my skin is fine. I find lots of things around unsettles me, I've given tons of stuff away to friends and charity. If people ask me what I want for birthday or Christmas presents I repeat what my father in law used to say "If I can't eat it or drink it, don't buy it".
earrings - i only have 1 pair as well because I am allergic to nickel and I also find them uncomfortable plus I'm too cheap to buy the expensive ones bag - I have some that i keep but i will have to declutter soon, i have my trustee small purse and go-to backpack I use everyday souvenirs - disagree with not buying them, I like putting them up in my display bookcase, I think it's such a good reminder of your vacation time and it adds aesthetic in my opinion. As a visual person, getting something unique from places we've seen is a good reminder of those good times, I am such a sentimental person so things like souvenirs/memorabilia is a must buy. goal to stop buying: 1. cling/saran wrap - need to buy the reusable version 2. Lotions and skin care stuff - need to switch to more pure oils especially this winter 3. more clothes I don't need or use often- ie. swimsuit I only wear once a year anyway, party dresses :( 4. nail polishes - I have enough like 60+ bottles :O
Love soap bars❤️ I also have started buying shampoo and conditioner in a bar. My hair are so shiny and amazing to touch. Healthier for me and for the planet🌍🌎🌏✨❤️
Believe it or not! Even I stopped buying bags/large purses from one year. And I too have a turquoise blue sling bag something similar to yours! Nowadays I am feeling buying cloth bags is better as we can thoroughly wash, after I washed a cloth bag after coming back from the hospital recently (as my mom was sick for sometime). I always used to feel like there are hell a lot of germs partying on my handbags! Hehehe.. Also, I have stopped buying lotions, creams, and serums as oils have replaced all of them. In addition to these, I stopped buying cosmetics and beauty products, buying clothes to follow certain fashion trend which is short lived, souvenirs, artificial flowers (becomes boring and home to dust), watches (because anyway phone will do the same job), and too many shoes and slippers.
Meghan, discovered you moments ago. Awesome. Subscribed. Honestly, I have stopped buying clothes. Just cleaned out my closet of many things I haven't worn in a long time. Keep standing in front of my closet admiring how awesome it looks now. So freeing!!
This makes me realise I have always had a desire to be a minimalist. I've done many of these things without consciously thinking about it, and been told over and over I'm a neat freak. It just feels easier.
I stopped shopping at fast fashion outlets like h&m, forever21, american eagle, gap, stores like these. I stopped because a lot of the process of making these clothes are not ethical and good for the environment so I shop at thrift stores/consignment stores or clothes swapping with a friend or accepting a hand-me down from a family member.
For the longest time i‘ve been using soaps to wash my face, recently I started to appreaciate them for the body as well. Especially those who contain oils. I never need to moisturize my skin because the soap is already hydrating.
Minimalism doesn’t mean having only one bag and only one pair of earrings. If you think you need more, fine, but make sure that it is a necessity and not something you just want 😊
yeah, I don't like wearing dresses so my wardrobe has 0, it's not a "challenge" for me to not have dresses because I would never wear them even if I had 100 Versace pieces. But, I do need 4 bags - one animal printed, one plain black, one clutch and one weekend bag, so my minimalist wardrobe or my capsule would have to consist of 4 bags - personal preference, it is what I need, it does not mean you'll need as many. My boyfriend has 0 bags because he carries all his neccessities in his pockets or he tosses them in my bag haha, but has quite a lot of shirts. It varies massively from person to person based on what your lifestyle and fashion style dictate :)
Sounds like me. I don't buy those things either. My trick to having a small purse is that I have a small bag that I keep in my vehicle with all the "extras" pads, tampons, pain relievers, stuff you might need but don't want to carry every where you go.
Love your videos! Am I the only woman who doesn't shop for purses? I have one black Vera Bradley cross body that I use every single day! 😀 It's liberating!! Thanks for sharing!!
I have two bags. One smaller "purse" for shorter outings or shopping etc and one larger bag for work that fits all my lunch. Ive had the same two bags for probably 3 years now and wont buy more until one of them breaks
It's consumerism ingrained in our brains that we're supposed to have matching shoes and purses. The upper class has this mindset... when I encounter them, they look at my outfit, purse 👜👝👛 & shoes and judge from there. I haven't bought a purse in years but I'm guilty on shoes. 👠👡👢😂
laurah6381 I have 4. 1 huge structured one for my office job, 1 casual with long straps for weekends, 1 clutch for special occasions and 1 random bag that needs to go and was technically replaced by the first one because of size.
Such a wake up call.i need to make a list and I'm sure it would be a very long list of the stuff I need to stop buying.im over stuffed of everything from wallets, shoes, cologne, extra snacks, clothes and omg I can save a lot of $$$$ by doing or following your footsteps.money I can use for traveling thank you very much.
I used to buy bar soap, changed to bottle soap, now back to bar soap again. The same thing with laundry detergent. Bought cardboard, changed to plastic, now back to cardboard. I am trying to stay away from plastic as much as possible!😀
Is it really that bad if you put it in recycling after? I waste with bar soap because eventually it gets too small to use so I end up throwing it away.
@@lisa9867 If you look on RUclips, you might be able to find some videos on what to do with soap pieces. I believe that you can take all the little pieces to form a new soap bar. If I find a video, I will let you know.
@@lisa9867 There are some videos on there if you type in recycle soap or soap pieces. Crafts and Life Hacks By Juls has one called Recycle Soap. It looks like a good video. Hope that helps.
As the cost of living has gone up, and my disposable income has gone down, I’ve gotten a lot more mindful of how I spend my money. I’ve cut way back on the non essentials: clothes, makeup, skin care, body care, etc, only purchasing something when I really truly need it or I’m completely out. With clothes (and makeup), I realized I’d often buy the same type of thing over and over. So when I’m tempted I think about what I already have, and I usually have something very similar. That keeps me from making an unnecessary purchase 99% of the time.
I understand and respect your outlook on better life through positive changes. Better eating habits and so on. But .. souvenirs? ... If I travel to anywhere in Europe I’m definitely bringing something back
I became obsessed with Tea. I had to have every flavour at David’s Tea. One day I realized my tea drawer was completely full. I won’t let myself buy anymore till I use up my supply!
I just started trying to live minimally. I only have two purses and one small wallet. I had 4 big wallets that I haven’t used in 10 years. I also started making my own bath and body products such as soap, lotion bars, face oil, face toner and face scrub. Thank you for the great video :-)
Getting rid of all sorts of lotions and just using oils (coconut, argan, jojoba and black cumin oil) has really improved my skin and hair. Avoiding impulse clothes and accessory buys is also something I feel I've gotten the hang of. I also wait until something is almost used up to buy a new one. My bathroom is really decluttered this year as a result :) Books are the one thing I cannot resist buying, though. The ones I don't love go into a free public shelf (we have those here and there in my city) or I give them away. ♥ And yes, your channel also reminds me of pickuplimes. You're both lovely ladies :)
I love all of those oils! My fave is argan and jojoba I think :-) It's so nice when a space becomes so much tidier as a result. And I know what you mean by books! Thank you for watching! :)
Hey Megan, Mostly like yours, I don’t buy salad dressing, jewelry, body lotion, purses, any kind of bags (I am using handmade fabric tote), make up stuff, candy, etc. I only buy the really necessary rather than wants.
apparently having a working brain and not getting sucked into a consumerist mindset is now called minimalism. i have worked in consumer activism and learned a lot about quality of goods, and for mw the things you mention are the most basic things any human should be aware of.
I don’t buy magazines; soft drink (soda ); I’m stopping buying liquid washing detergent in plastic bottles and going back to powder in cardboard boxes; I do use body wash because soap has talloate (pig fat) in it but I probably could source soap without that and would like to not be buying more plastic bottles; I avoid supermarket vacuum packed foods; I don’t buy perfume but given it as a present, one bottle lasts me years; I won’t be buying any more dressy shoes bags purses or jewellery anytime soon or if ever - at 63 that won’t be hard lol ☺️
Girls need purses! For: Wallet Phone Chapstick Hand lotion Wet wipes Healthy snacks Makeup Hair brush Tampons Can't survive 10+ hours of work without those items
When I go to tropical destinations overseas, I don’t buy rubbish that I won’t use when back home - especially cheap t shirts or market clothing - I usually take my old t shirts, board shorts and runners and donate these to the poor and come home and restock with high quality .. it’s a win win

👍 totally true

Interesting point! It's true that as we get older we start to find our own "place" and the choices we make reflect that :)

Stuck between "I need to save money" and "I only live once"

Live your best life the way you want, unless you are harming yourself and the environment
You can buy something else. I dont buy things anymore. I'm saving for traveling and own house. Every little stuff what I'm not buying is more money for something else!
This comment made me smile. So true.
Anot UA Same here.
When I travel I get a souvenir magnet from the place. So my fridge has lots of magnets. I find it takes up no space and it's good way to display and remember the places have visited.
That's a great idea. Everyone's different and it's so important to have things around you that bring you joy, even if it's in a small way. :)
I do this too.
I love magnet's and they don't take up a lot of space. I also love bags. I use bags for everything from toting my laundry to taking them when I go shopping as opposed to using paper or plastic.
It's eco friendly.
I buy pins from each place I visit! Takes up nooo room in a suitcase, and I can hang them all on lanyards in a small corner of my room :)

But trully now I understand
I’ve been on a journey to simplify since graduating in March as a consumer health librarian and I must say- shopping only when you need something or after you’ve carefully considered it, really makes your life simple! The money and stress saved by being intentional and now- ecofriendly- has been great!
I guess I'm a potential minimalist! I have one mini backpack and wear the same clothes over and over, (I just buy basics in different colours) and I have two pair of shoes lol whenever I find something I haven't used in a long time I donate or throw away.
Having basics in different colours is so handy! I like having clothes that are easy to mix-and-match :)
The way ypu have come to live is how I have always lived. This is partly because I grew up 'poor' so material overload was not an issue - then I moved to NYC as a music student, and my husband and I shared a TINY apartment near Lincoln Center. Much of my life has been travelling. So -
- NO jewelry - I used to wear earrings occasionally but really - I have enough trouble finding socks that match!
I love all of the things you mentioned! Sounds like you've got things sorted out very nicely. I love Dr. Bronner's too
Thanks a lot for tips... Stay healthy
Sounds good but did you say you replace your basic clothes every year or two? Why?
@@cracticustibicen6374 - Tees, jeans, underwear, socks and shoes wear out. Especially because I don't buy many at once. Jeans and tees are my everyday clothes, I live an active outdoor life and things get worn.

That's amazing
handbags, jewelry, and nick nacks, I was the same and then after having kids I only use 2 and so now I dont buy any of those anymore.
Wow,, I love your channel 😍😍
You should unsubscribe to clothing stores. I've been doing this since last week. So that I don't buy unnecessary things. It has worked for me. 🙂 🙂 🙂
@Anon Anon it's true. It's very tiring. We're all getting there. The detox is not easy. 🙂 🙂 🙂
I have a hard time not buying souvenirs when I travel so I get a few postcards from each trip, it fulfilled my need to shop, they’re cheap and small, and I can look back on them to remember the trip!
I have a coffee fettish, so I have to get a souvenir coffee cup everywhere I go. Lol
That’s a good idea. I only buy Christmas tree ornaments for souvenirs. That way the tree is special and the family can reminisce on the trip/life event that it represents
I buy fridge magnets. Small, cute, personal.
I used to do that, too, and have kept a few, but now I take pictures instead.
I literally don't buy any of these things you just said. Who knew I was a minimalist 😄
I own a single pair of gold earings that i've been using for more than 7 years, and that's the only accessory that I wear.
R u from Kerala(india)...????
Almost the whole of Indian middle and below is like that. In fact after coming to Canada I realized one more thing..I I think we are the least makeup using country. Here in west, people actually use makeup. All the things which I use to wonder in Indian malls..who buys..lol.. I compare that to India...women hardly wear any.
Literally same with me.

I no longer buy fast fashion shoes, actually I just own 4 quality pairs of shoes and it´s all I need. Keep making this videos!
A couple pairs of shoes is all you need! I used to have soooo many.
I am so in love with my capsule wardrobe for this! It stops me buying clothing + shoes
That's not a critic but your list is basically what every person on a budget does in their everyday life
Isn't budgeting essentially minimalism and vice versa? I'm budgeting, and most of the minimalism stuff automatically applies.
when I was on a budget I was buying the shittiest body wash, lotion & shampoo from Walmart. But now I buy eco-friendly soap and use more natural oils, which are actually more expensive.
Basically yeah but most don't like being on a budget where as minimalists enjoy a clutter free life
Yeah my thoughts exactly on so many of those minimalism videos. Like wtf you don’t feed the economy like you used to do, that’s not automatically minimalism

Costco organic coconut oil replaces shaving gel/ make removing oils / body and face moisturizer.
Muslin cloths or face towels instead of disposable facial wipes
Soap tip - I hate bar soap and feel it’s unsanitary. Use a cheese grater and grate the soap. Boil 16 oz bottled water . Add the grated soap and stir until completely melted. Let it cool overnight. Stir in the morning and pour into an old body wash bottle .

Muslin ones there are a ton on line . I got the Liz Earle . I just wash it daily with liquid soap and hang dry and then once a week to do deep clean and make it white and bright with ua cheap bar soap .
This soap trick works well on the Costco wash cloths to keep white .
My face is sooo nice and soft with the coconut oil
Don't use coconut oil on your face. It clogges up your pores and doesn't benefit your skin as much as a argon oil would
Inger Helen Ruste Houg
I did a lot of research and the coconut oil I use is organic and cold pressed. I do use organic argon oil but I use that as a moisturizer. Coconut oil is cheaper and really removes all the makeup. It’s better than all the harsh chemicals in face wipes and face washes .
My face wash is organic and with argon oil . ( my friend has her own organic line based on argon and sells to a major retailer) she has done tons of research as well
I have been doing this for over 4 years and my face is never better.

Do you not drink water when you go out???? You can't fit a water bottle in that purse, I'd die of dehydration if I didn't have water on hand
My water bottle is 40 ounces and I take it everywhere! It has a little sleeve that has a strap... my purse size is similar to hers.
silverrain84fly Not everyone is needs that. My body does not need the constant input of fluid so it is a personal thing. But if I want something like a little food or drink or a warm top etc, I might take a slightly larger bag but it would be only full of those things. I do usually have some tissues, a lipstick and a small brush, but thats all.
@David Latshaw I feel personally attacked by your comment 😭 I'll go drink water now
I just carry mine! I take it to work, and keep it in the car if I’m out running errands
You've started me thinking. I buy things I haven't run out of yet - my cupboards are full. I don't need to do this. I liked your message.
I cannot tell you how happy I am that I found your channel! You're very calming and to the point.
Aw thank you so much Caitlin! Really glad to have you here!!

Same!!! I think in my entire lifetime I've gotten my nails done twice. I rarely paint them myself either!
Those nail polish are full of toxic chemicals anyway. Good for you! ⭐️

I carry a giant bag cause I have kids 😂
Bag has first aid, allergy friendly snacks, small toys, extra diaper, clothing, hair comb, a purse, water bottle, tissue, emergency change, my tablet.
Please do a recipe video on your dressing and seasoning mixes. Every time I try one at home it tastes terrible. I don't know what I am doing wrong.
Oh nooo haha. I'll definitely make a dressing video sometime soon!
Thanks.
That's great! It feels good to have our lives feel a little more orderly and simplified. Thanks for watching :)
Oh man!! :( Being kind about saying no is definitely important!! I worked in retail for many years and I know the feeling D:
May be your company should stop yelling at you. Sad how they treat their employees. Good luck!
Hi Susan! I know what you mean. There's so much waste out there and bar soaps can really help reduce it. xx
The items you mentioned are things I dont buy anymore either. I never buy household cleaners. I make all my own from simple things like vinegar, lemon juice, alcohol, and plain dish soap.
Amazing! I know quite a few people who make homemade cleaners too! I haven't yet done that, but I do like Dr. Bronners :)
Meghan Livingstone you should check out the cleanmyspace channel if you havent already. They have so many ideas on simple cleaning tips and ideas, recipes for homemade cleaners as well!
I have really sensertive skin, & get allergic reactions to cleaning products ect, I’m wondering if you know what I could try
kerry Irving If vinegar and rubbing alcohol dont bother you, I imagine the homemade cleaners wouldnt bother you as much? Pinterest has lots of ideas!
Not sure how I landed on this video, but it was great.
Really glad you enjoyed it!! :)
I tried the one bag idea but got tired using the same bag everyday. I admire your strong will. Loved your video
Agree 100% on buying “backups”. I used to do this a lot. Now I buy when I need it, not too far in advance.
Sanitary napkins is something I donot have to buy ever since I switched to a menstrual cup.
It's very freeing.
I love people like you, thank you, great tips girl!
Absolutely love your videos. Most things that you no longer buy I no longer buy🙂
Awesome! I feel a lot better not having tons and tons of stuff :)
Vickie Clark then if a bigger one is what you need, use that 😊 No one said that minimalism = one tiny purse 😊
@@Merryyy203 right
Yeah,,I'm starting to see that growing older can be a real bummer. I take 13 pills a day and I'm only 54 years old.
I have 2 purses. One is medium size and tan and the other is large and black so I can go either way depending on what I need to carry around. And since they are basic colors they will go with anything I choose to wear that day.
Vickie Clark god bless you dear, I know exactly what do you mean.
thank you for making this video, it's inspiring me to donate the jewelry and purses i don't really ever wear/use!
I have gradually switched out personal hygiene products with simple alternatives:
stopped buying lotion - now use argan oil for face + body
stopped buying body wash - now use bronners
stopped buying shampoo - bronners for the win, 2-3x week
stopped buying conditioner - apple cider vinegar 1-2x a week in a spritzer bottle
stopped buying face wash - raw honey!
Im 39 n only use coconut oil
Natural oil is definitely best, I'd say she's doing the right thing
I decided to be a minimalist this year. I spent the cash used to buy clothes and to upkeep my lifestyles on organic nutritional values.
Those were sensible..... several of these I have just naturally moved in to ..... not consciously decided.
That's great!!
I can't afford to travel always so when I do I buy a ref magnet as a souvenir. Makes me happy seeing them and remembering happy moments.
I bring everything to work so I can't do small purse. In case I need something, I don't have to go back home since I don't have a ride. I walk to work 😂
I am not a minimalist..i just dont have any money to buy all these things
Super different from the usual "thing I don't buy anymore". You gave me a different perspective on things I didn't even notice I still buy even though I am minimalist
I can't use bar soap. It dries out my skin. Everything else is awesome!
Hi :)
There are some special for sensitive skin, have a look ! :)
@@marinedeburghgrave7906 Cool! Thank you so much!!
Depends on the bar soap that u use
i use dove bars of soap it is an overall moisturizer works for me
Some great tips here, I just use almond oil now as a moisturiser, it's great.
I am a Minimalist..because i have ZERO subscribers
Finding Meaning God I sympathise! 😆
Congrats u get 46
You got another subscriber girl. God Bless!! :)
Me too haha
I too only have 3 subscribers...
earrings - i only have 1 pair as well because I am allergic to nickel and I also find them uncomfortable plus I'm too cheap to buy the expensive ones
bag - I have some that i keep but i will have to declutter soon, i have my trustee small purse and go-to backpack I use everyday
souvenirs - disagree with not buying them, I like putting them up in my display bookcase, I think it's such a good reminder of your vacation time and it adds aesthetic in my opinion. As a visual person, getting something unique from places we've seen is a good reminder of those good times, I am such a sentimental person so things like souvenirs/memorabilia is a must buy.
goal to stop buying:
1. cling/saran wrap - need to buy the reusable version
2. Lotions and skin care stuff - need to switch to more pure oils especially this winter
3. more clothes I don't need or use often- ie. swimsuit I only wear once a year anyway, party dresses :(
4. nail polishes - I have enough like 60+ bottles :O
Allison Allison ahh that’s the best feeling! I moved recently and got rid of so much stuff in the process and it really is so freeing 😄
Thanks!💕
What u do it's same as what muslim learn in the Quran. Masha Allah
I know I'm late to the party, but I have to say that I LOVE how a lot of these options are also zero-waste!
I could never be that minimalist..lol, one bag? one pair of earrings? oh God kill me now! lol
Minimalism doesn’t mean having only one bag and only one pair of earrings. If you think you need more, fine, but make sure that it is a necessity and not something you just want 😊
AllergicRants so what, it means like 2 or 3 bags? Still a hell no
AllergicRants but I respect minimalism
Minimalism isn't about what you want to throw away, it's about what you want to keep.
yeah, I don't like wearing dresses so my wardrobe has 0, it's not a "challenge" for me to not have dresses because I would never wear them even if I had 100 Versace pieces.
Haha I know what you mean! A lot of people have tons of purses. I bet yours is really pretty - next time I need a new purse I'd get a black one :)
Nope you are not the only one. I hate it when people assume that just because you are a women that you have to love shoes, purses, jewelry, etc.
Me too, I try to use glass, etc. instead of plastic as much as possible.
Thanks Ngoni Griffith! I'll have to watch those videos.
But .. souvenirs? ... If I travel to anywhere in Europe I’m definitely bringing something back
Some people love souvenirs and that's totally cool :-) I just personally tend to not get them.
I became obsessed with Tea. I had to have every flavour at David’s Tea. One day I realized my tea drawer was completely full. I won’t let myself buy anymore till I use up my supply!
I stopped buying big wallets
*Pulls out a big wallet*
It's still less that half the size of my wallet 🙈
I’m just messing around 😛
Me too... but my wallet does seem ridiculously big after watching this 😂
Bronwyn Brown 😂😂😂♥️
Lol...it could be over of her older one's?
I just started trying to live minimally. I only have two purses and one small wallet. I had 4 big wallets that I haven’t used in 10 years. I also started making my own bath and body products such as soap, lotion bars, face oil, face toner and face scrub. Thank you for the great video :-)
Getting rid of all sorts of lotions and just using oils (coconut, argan, jojoba and black cumin oil) has really improved my skin and hair. Avoiding impulse clothes and accessory buys is also something I feel I've gotten the hang of. I also wait until something is almost used up to buy a new one. My bathroom is really decluttered this year as a result :)
Books are the one thing I cannot resist buying, though. The ones I don't love go into a free public shelf (we have those here and there in my city) or I give them away. ♥
And yes, your channel also reminds me of pickuplimes. You're both lovely ladies :)
I love all of those oils! My fave is argan and jojoba I think :-) It's so nice when a space becomes so much tidier as a result. And I know what you mean by books! Thank you for watching! :)
Sandra Hint I tell my daughter that books are investments. That’s the one thing I will never tell her (or myself) no too.
I thought having no interest in souvenirs was weird cause most of my friends do. Now I’m relieved.
Haha. Salad dressing is something I would never have thought of. Interesting tip.
I learned, by watching this video, that I'm not a minimalist nor do I ever want to be ! To each their own xoxo
I only buy something when I 100% love it
Hey Megan, Mostly like yours, I don’t buy salad dressing, jewelry, body lotion, purses, any kind of bags (I am using handmade fabric tote), make up stuff, candy, etc. I only buy the really necessary rather than wants.
apparently having a working brain and not getting sucked into a consumerist mindset is now called minimalism. i have worked in consumer activism and learned a lot about quality of goods, and for mw the things you mention are the most basic things any human should be aware of.
Having just one pair of jewlery is not basic in our society right now, no.
I’m sure there was a nicer way to say whatever you just have. :)
Maybe so but most aren't
For:
Wallet
Phone
Chapstick
Hand lotion
Wet wipes
Healthy snacks
Makeup
Hair brush
Tampons
Can't survive 10+ hours of work without those items
When I go to tropical destinations overseas, I don’t buy rubbish that I won’t use when back home - especially cheap t shirts or market clothing - I usually take my old t shirts, board shorts and runners and donate these to the poor and come home and restock with high quality .. it’s a win win
