    I like seeing younger people realize the importance of not living beyond their means and thinking about keeping expenses down.

    Before buying an impulse or frivolous item I actually walk through the store longer until the strange euphoria of buying something new wears off. I usually come to my senses and put it back! LOL heading straight for the checkout after putting the thing in your cart just feeds that Buy Now Gotta Have impulse, I think. Great video. Thanks!

      This is sooo true. Often we make purchases based off of an initial and temporary "euphoria". Good idea to walk through the store a bit!

      I do the same. Owning for 15 minutes in my cart actually allows me to ask myself questions:
      Is it a want or need?
      Where will it go?
      Will it simplify my life or complicate it?
      Is the joy it will bring worth the long term cost on the environment.?
      How long have I wanted it?

      I don't keep my purse in my hand and if I find something I put it back and go back for it after browsing all the shops. Most of the time I can't even remember what it was I liked so don't go back! Next time you get to the till think about whats in your basket and I bet you can't name everything. Shops are clever in making people impulse buy without thinking

    Do you have a podcast? I love listening to your voice. I’m from the Philippines and sadly, healthy options in food are waaaay too pricey than junk. ☹️ It’s so expensive to be healthy here in the Philippines but I just subscribe to your channel 2 days ago and I am soooo inspired to change my ways. Keeping track of what I usually spend or how much certain items I often buy cost. Then taking out just that much cash I needed, plus just a little extra, in case of unexpected emergency. Using cash instead of relying on a card saved me a lot of money!

    Been giving minimalism a try over the last 6 months. Sold a lot of stuff, donated a lot of stuff, bought a desk since I’m studying a masters degree, invested in a good laptop for my work with that extra money. Took up reading again. As someone living in the U.K., can someone tell me what a Thrift store is? Is that the equivalent of a charity shop? X

    Great video. Every dollar adds up. For example with subscriptions, if you have a cable bundle, it may seem like a great deal to do the bundle because cable and internet with phone means the phone is only $5 more per month, but if you don’t need a landline, get rid of it and you’ll save that $5. Sometimes they make the “deal” seem to good not to do it, but if you don’t use it, it’s not really a deal. It all adds up in the long run. Even $10 per month is $120 per year.

    • @meghanlivingstone
      @meghanlivingstone  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah, exactly! It's so easy to be reeled into deals that seem great but aren't actually necessary.

    I have recently started going to thrift stores instead of going to a department store because it's a whole lot cheaper. I have never thought of the many gems that I would be able to find while I was shopping and that I have saved so much money. Now that I'm buying clothes that I have to wear to work I have been thinking about where I'm shopping and the. quality of what I'm buying.

    I have a tip for when you need to purchase something online: Put it in your "cart," enter your email, and then wait until the next day. A lot of times, the website may send you a discount code to persuade you to purchase the item since they can tell you have had it in your cart for a while.

    • @meghanlivingstone
      @meghanlivingstone  6 лет назад +1

      That is SUCH a good idea! I don't shop a lot online, but I'll definitely try that tip if I'm ever mid-purchase online :-) Thank you so much for sharing xoxo

    Great suggestions! We also save significantly by buying in bulk from a grocery supply company. We get shelf stable staple foods like peanut butter, oats, and olive oil shipped to us once every 5 months or so. We have a larger place than you and use a walk in closet as a pantry. :D

    • @ashleyanastasia7779
      @ashleyanastasia7779 3 года назад

      For others who are nervous about buying so much at once, I would recommend to just buy one bulk item and see how it goes. We did that and finished a package of oats in one year. That gave us the confidence that it wouldn't go bad before we finished it.

    I do shop at thrift stores but I am getting more and more frustrated. 1) so many clothes I cannot buy because they smell so strong of detergent or fabric softener and the smell does not come out. I have tried many ways to get it out ...sometimes it works but most often it doesn't. 2) The thrift stores in my area either have terrible quality fast fashion junk and are 'affordable'/reasonably priced for used clothes OR they have good quality and style clothes but they charge absolutely ridiculous prices. I have seen a dress from Joe Fresh in a second hand store that was 3x the original price, used sweaters for $50, etc. So frustrated. Thanks for letting me rant.

    I can't stand thrift stores,they usually smell bad...I don't even like stores like TJMaxx or Ross where everything is mismatched and all over the place.I donate all of my clothes thugh because I know there are people like you or my best friend who can't wait to shop there.I used to have a part time job at a retail store and got all my clothes there at 50% off and I'm still weeding some of it out but now I just stick to minimalistic and classy basics and get one or 2 trendy items a season (But now always).I also rather buy one classic looking sweater of best quality i can afford and keep that for few years. I don't understand how people buy huge amount of cheap clothes from online retailers especially those in China.It's a one time wear if you're lucky. Minimalistic living is the best living I think, I used to have too many printed clothes but nothing to wear.Now I have one Ikea rack and one small dresser and no problems at all.One thing I can't get rid off is a car....I live in suburbs with almost none existant bus system and kids, who require being driven to soccer work etc etc.When I lived downtown and had no kids, i walked everywhere!

    Your videos Meghan are so brilliant!! I'm not a youtube gal but your videos are worth watching for.
    I would like to add more ideas on saving money. Opening a separate bank account that serve as your savings account. Lets say you want buy a car, or spend a holiday somewhere in the world or buy a house. It's always good to have a savings account. It gives you purpose and motivation.
    On the other hand, as an expat living in Bangkok eating out is more cheaper than cooking at home. They have loads of shops where you can go and buy a decent food for a very affordable price. It's definitely a case to case basis. For group gathering or party maybe ideal to cook at home. The difference sometimes falls on the culture where you are living.

    I get to telework 2 days a week, which saves 5-6 dollars on gas each time; so every telework day I make an extra $5 payment on my car note principal. This has shaved about two thirds off of my final car payment two years from now. May be small, but it is helping, and I don’t miss the $5 at all. So I should probably start upping my extra payment to $8 or $10 🍀

    The biggest problem is that there are not so many people why actually want to buy my clothes 😅

    After a terrible 2022, shell-shocked financial backers have a lot to think about and losses to recover from. An expansion report and a wealth of other data did little to alter assumptions that the Central bank would likely keep raising interest rates regardless of whether the economy slows down. This implies that portfolios will experience more losses during the first quarter of 2023. I'm currently at a crossroads deciding whether to exchange my $250k security/stock portfolio; how might the continuous market volatility work to my advantage?

      @maryshea9781 Concentrate on two main objectives. First and foremost, keep yourself safe by knowing when to sell stocks to reduce losses and maximize gains. Second, prepare yourself to gain from a market turnaround. I advise you to seek the advice of a representative or financial counselor

      @maryshea9781 sincerely thank you I looked her up on the internet and was awestruck by how qualified she was; I contacted her since I need all the help I can get with canning. I've just scheduled a call.

      @@ElizabethSarah-cl3sc *KRISTIN GAIL CUNNINGHAM* is quite popular on Bloomberg I doubt if there is anyone who is serious about stock trading that doesn't know her. She has helped me quite a few times in growing my portfolio and it was blissful without any setbacks. she is a tough person in an industry that demands clairvoyance

    Sooo adorable. Get rid of your vehicle. How are you gonna carry home a week's shopping or all that bulk-shopping stuff? Older? Live in a city with poor public transportation? Want to visit family 15 miles away? Take a taxi? That will cost a lot. Older and have to visit several doctors? Try waiting for your insurance ride. Can be done but it's a pain.
