I use the “what is my gut telling me?” when op shopping before and after trying on clothes. Also a good decluttering question on the flip side! Your videos are so beautiful and relaxing Megan, love from Australia 🇦🇺 🥰
1. Will i get long-term use out of this? 2. How quickly will this item lose its excitement 3. Do I have realistic expectations? 4. What is my motivation behind wanting this? (buying this because its on sale/to fit in/) 5. What else could i do with my money? 6. Can it wait? 7.Will I still want this if I walk away? 8. Can I use something I already have? 9. Can I do or make this myself? 10. What is my gut telling me?
I wanted a potters wheel and kiln for decades. Recently I went to a store to possibly make the large purchase. In the specialty store I had the worst gut feeling and felt overwhelmed. It helped to see it all and really be looking at it versus buying online to from a shiny catalog. It was SO much stuff, SO much clutter and commitment versus the little organized and well marketed tiny picture online. It made me laugh after pining for it all for so long, so I changed my mind and now have no desire for any of it! I’m free! So my advice is to find the Thing you want...and hold it. Does it bring the imagined happiness or is it just another...Thing?!
This is such a powerful example - I can relate to it as well. I've been in similar situations where 'having' the thing you want momentarily can totally change your desire for it. xx
I think I'll make a poster with these questions and hang it on the wall next to my computer. I make most of my purchases online, so a visual before I click might help me. Thank you, Meghan!
I like to ask myself if I would regret buying something or would I regret not buying it. I like to put things in wish lists then if I look back later I notice I no longer want most of the things on that list. I really love this video!
Wonderful tips, Meghan! One tip I learned from a source that I cannot name right off the bat is that if an item on sale or clearance were to sell for its original price only, would I still buy it. This tip helps with clothing items and technology, because these are almost always on sale. I like to think of sale prices as an illusionary experience, since most people look at purchasing the item on sale as how much you saved versus how much money you spent on the item in the first place.
Such a great video! Your hair looks 10/10 btw ^_^ My two tips: 1) for online impulse buys cancel accounts like PayPal and remove card details from websites that know you, so there's never a quick '1-click' option. I usually find that having to go get my card and spend ages entering all my details usually makes me realise I don't want it. 2) for in store purchases I'm trying to go back to using cash. I know everything's a contactless swipe away these days, but handing over actual money always seems to make the transaction feel more 'real' somehow, and I put more thought into what i'm buying because I can't carry endless money (which is what a card can feel like) x
Hey!! Thank you sooo much. Love all your points. I'll admit, I use my card(s) for pretty much everything, but I do agree that using cash has a different feeling to it.
Naturally this video is so helpful. Black Friday I did some shopping on ThredUP, and after I spent the money I felt bad because well spending money, but I had to remind myself that I made purchases that feel more me now than what I’m not getting use out of. Pros and Cons always.
This video couldn’t have come at a better time this time of year. Thank you so much for sharing this information around your spending habits and savings.
These are fantastic questions! The one I use the most often is what else could I do with the money? Sometimes there’s something else I’d rather do with my money than spend it on a product :)
I usually find a lot of minimalism videos repetitive but I really enjoyed this one, thank you. I even wrote down every question you suggested so it is always on my phones home screen so I remember them 😁
Omg I really needed this!!! Thank you so much! I have really bad issues when it comes to buying I literally don’t buy things because I like the look of emptiness but I realized I was asking the wrong questions. I decided to only add 1-2 new items based on the weather on a warm to cold climate never every season. I know my style WILL change so I try not to buy too much and I simply add something if it’ll add value to my wardrobe but I first need to find if I can hand down at least one item, if I can’t find anything then I don’t buy anything
I don’t know if you’ve mentioned this in the video and I somehow missed it but one of the questions I ask myself alongside these awesome questions is, “is there a place for this item in my life? Does it fit? Does it not? Does it fit within my everyday routine or lifestyle? That’s the biggest question for me! After this question, I tend to ask myself about the cost and if it’s even worth it or if it will benefit me in some way. Thank you for this video!! I truly appreciate this!! I thought I was the only one who asks these questions every time I buy something, especially the more pricier items! Lol you’re amazing 💚
Such a good refresher video on saving; a few new points, and even the points I've heard in other videos were phrased in a way that spoke to me. Loved this!
Awesome. I minimize on my channel with COOKING. If you don’t need parchment paper, I say you don’t need it. I DID get some kitchen supplies for Black Friday, bc I’m building my channel 👍🏻👌🏼💛
Great video! I really enjoy minimalism concept videos :) I'm determined to do some declutter & no buy next month. Wish this Video came before Black Friday tho. The damage is already done 😬
Megan , Love your videos! Would you do a weekly WHAT I EAT IN A DAY ? I really like your clean eating and I find it helpful as I am new to LowFodmap and eating for healthy gut.
Sometimes the purchases that aren't that exciting initially, are often the ones that bring me more joy over time. Like buying a basic white pullover for my wardrobe. What also helps me is not looking at price tags anymore, so I don't go after the good "deals" and automatically pick the items I like. After that I look at the price and see if I have enough money to buy it. Also : second hand shopping. If it is second hand I find myself trying on things that I never really see elsewhere and I just magically get drawn to things, unlike in clothing stores, where I am often not sure what to pick/ to get. It's like buying a little bit of history of someone's life :)
thank you! i was really wanting to buy a new winter coat, but it is super out of my budget (aritzia super puff) and i'm trying to live a minimalistic lifestyle. this video was great!
Thanks for sharing this I will add these questions to ones I already ask. I like to ask where am I going to put this? And if the item is an up grade of something I already have what will I do with the old one? And Is the old one good enough? Also I ask what’s the responsibility to take care of this item and who’s responsibility will it be?
Amazing questions, I totally agree! Reminds me of the 'one-in one-out rule', where something is donated, etc. if a new item is brought in. But those are great ways to be a little more thoughtful.
Well I’ve wanted the American Jewish girl for years now and I finally have her. I’m so happy. I have a my life as doll whom I love too and now want and need the cool accessories. This is a must have. I have her vlogger set which is so cute
The hesitation/listening to your thing isn't always helpful for me because I overthink and doubt myself even with things I really want. I am very cautious, then I doubt my cautiousness, then doubt my doubting.
@@meghanlivingstone That is truly unexpected for you doing this so quick! Thank you so much for providing access to me as a Deaf person. I'm so looking forward to watching your videos. :)
I don’t like these videos...seems like you’re making very similar videos in the last month. Can you make more what I eat in a day, super foods or health tips? Pls don’t take it personally, just my opinion
Great tips 😁 I usually try to wait at least a day if I really want to buy something. Or add it to my wish list and revisit later and if I do want it I'll save for it or buy it if I can. The items I really want it havnt managed to buy yet go my christmas/ birthday list.
Do you ask yourself any of these questions? :)
Meghan Livingstone
Thanks for the insight! Holidays especially are crucial 💕
Agreed!
I think the most important question is: Can I wait for buy it?
If I can't wait one minute more, it is possible it is a very essential thing

Perhaps you could join a pottery
group in your city /area. This will
alleviate you having to own a kiln
and potter's wheel and......

What a great idea! I love that :) Having a visual reminder can be really helpful.
I've written them in a note on my phone to check when I'm out and about shopping :)

Mariela Merino I completely agree
Exactly! It can really change our perspective on making a purchase.

Love this! Yes definitely, asking if it's something that fits our lifestyle is key. Glad you enjoyed this one!!
I wrote down all of these in hopes it will help me cut back on spending. Those are great questions!
Awesome! I hope they help too -- they've helped me a ton over the years :)
All the small stuff really adds up! Thank you good video!
