I watch your videos for quite some time now and I always take my time to watch them, so that I can concentrate on them completely because I love them so much. This video is honestly one of my absolute favorites. You inspire me so much. I now have a new approach on cloth. I often felt pressured to have a smaller number of cloth when looking into minimalism, but I loved all my Items. You helped understand, that it's is not about the number just about what feels right. Also you inspired me too start traking my finances, I still live at home and don't have dept to pay off, but I have a drem I want and need too budget for. Thanks too you I am getting much faster too completing my dream then I was before. Thank you also for sharing your stuggle and just being honest. Thank you for all your inspiration. Sorry for the long comment, I'm just a huge fan and love your content.😊❤️
Love your videos and how you approach shopping and mindful spending! This is something that I've being trying to work on, and it is certainly not easy. The links on your website (1-1 coaching and live decluttering) do not work, unfortunately! I'm a digital marketer, if you ever need help with website management :)
My question is what do you do when your work attire almost entirely clashes with your style? I pretty much have to wear neutral dry cleaned suits every day and I'm sick of them taking up 90% of my closet. I also hate the color black and feel forced to keep black clothes due to my job. How do you think I should proceed?
I haven't even watched the video yet, will do it later and comment on what you did. What I did when I could afford to: remove every piece I would never have bought if I didn't have professional reasons for it, or that I wouldn't have bought period (one of my sisters-in-law tried to "teach me stylish-ness" by buying me things that suited me like a glittery tutu suits a 5-star general; she eventually figured out it wasn't the best idea). Nobody in my family was surprised when that left a lot of comfortable clothing in black, navy, red, burgundy and white. It can be more homey (yoga pants) or dressier (wide skirts), but it's always, always, always comfortable and in that everything-matches-everything-else palette. Results for my mother or that sister-in-law, both of which are "outfitters", would have been wildly different. "Matchers", like me and 2.sister-in-law, have stuff we can mix'n'match as the mood strikes us. Outfitters build individual outfits; my mother once threw a fit because I was wearing a white blouse with navy trousers, when in her mind it belonged with a specific navy skirt. They're likely to end up with specific outfits, and with more total pieces, but in the end it's about a basic difference in how our minds think about getting dressed; neither way is wrong except when forced on someone for whom it's not the natural way. After watching: 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I’ve found it’s also helpful to have a “take to the cleaners/tailor” pile. Sometimes an item would be a love, if the legs/ dress were an inch shorter, or the waist didn’t gap, or if it didn’t have a hole, or if it didn’t have a stain. Those are things you can have fixed and get them to your love pile :) I ended up teaching myself how to use a needle and thread because all my pants gap at the waist. Being able to fix that at home is so helpful.
Too much effort for me. Getting rid of those items, I’m wearing the stuff that really fits properly If you really loved that item, you would have taken it to the tailor or the cobbler already
I really love the steps in here that give us permission to store "maybe" items. Decluttering has become such a Thing, but I see now that "love it or toss it" is seriously black and white thinking, and there's nothing wrong with having a storage box I return to a few times a year.
the storage box is actually a pretty big step in decluttering. if you find yourself needing certain items you can go get them from the box thus cementing them as "keep" items but if other items haven't moved in a year from the box you can donate them
what is key for me in making that "maybe" box or storage box is clearly setting a time that you will go back and revisit those items (like actually making a calendar reminder for ex) b/c otherwise, it's so easy for those things to slip into the black abyss of "out of sight out of mind" limbo
If the items are in a box, for a year, they smell like a box. If you can't decide straightaway, put them on a hanger and onto a hook, door handle or other place to display. Look at them every day for a week. You might just be overwhelmed today. After the 7 days, if you still can't move it to either Keep or Go, then it goes, because you have to decide. But I bet you have already decided -- to Keep.
The "no white t shirt recommend" rlly got me because that's what ALL other videos start off with and I'm always like I've never worn a white t-shirt ever
This must be one of the most practical and actually sensible approaches I've seen in capsule videos. Loads of them suggest starting from moodboards and visions, that make your current wardrobe feel absolute and old. Choosing fave pieces and working around is much more sustainable
As someone who owns WAY too many clothes, I feel like this method is great to do on laundry day. Everything in your hamper it’s safe to say is probably a hell yes because you’ve clearly been wearing it. Then everything left over in your closet is what you need to work with. Love this idea!
@@Anonymous-wi6ig Think of it like fine china or fancy cologne. Some people choose to preserve them and bring them out only during special events. Others believe that the future is not guaranteed and that they should be enjoyed whenever possible. At the end of it all, it comes down to the person.
don't think this would work for me because i have a tendency to wear whatever's easier to reach and dress on even though i dislike the way it makes me look :'') but can definitely help someone!
This has made me realize my closet looks like a goth valentine's day. My closet after purging is almost exclusively black, red, and pink, but that's what suits me so that's what my capsule is 🤷🏽♀️ this was helpful!
I struggled with the purge until I learned how my body shape directed the style of clothing that looked best on me. I kept pieces that I thought were basics but the cut of the item didn’t suit my shape. For example there are many different types of white t-shirts. I figured out why I chose to wear some over others and it had to do with my shape. This helped me purge those items that weren’t my favorite.
I've had this same realization. I mean, who knew there were so many shapes of "white" (black, etc.) tshirts? So many SHAPES and how did I want it to fit ME? Feeling glad I'm not the only one who had to think about this ❤️
Same! For me it was necklines 🤗 Once I realized V-neck and low neck looked MUCH better than crew or turtle neck lines, decluttering became much easier ☺️
Not watched you before but you sold me in the first minute in your "No White shirt rule, you don't have to wear beige if you don't want to and you can have as much colour as you want" Like lady for that alone I now am vibing with you
For the longest time I thought I was into trenchcoats, fisherman stripes, heeled boots, dainty layered necklaces, handbags… Beige, white, black. I couldn’t figure out why it felt like I couldn’t breathe when I was in public wearing these items. It was a very strange feeling, like I’m actually holding in air. In retrospect, this feeling is called self consciousness. It was such a relief when I realized that I like wearing the same three pairs of jeans and T-shirts, hemp flannels, everything that Patagonia has ever made. I like olive green, orange, brown. I don’t actually care that much about fashion in the sense of what other people are wearing. I don’t like Pinterest, I don’t like selfies, I don’t like make up, I don’t even really like nail polish. My idea of looking cool is a long sleeve T-shirt and a short sleeve T-shirt over that: rust belt core. I care about having a good skin care routine Madhippie to the rescue! I care about regular haircuts, but not blow drying or styling my hair so much. Weirdly, I get way more compliments now. Because I am myself. Natural, don’t really care that much about what other people think of me. That was a cool realization. And it was such a relief to feel free from social media and trends. Your video is awesome!
I love this! I love that you’ve discovered this about yourself. This has made me think a lot about my style and whether I’ve been influenced heavily by others in a good, bad, right or wrong way. Thanks for your comment!
Love this! While I differ in style and interests from you, I can absolutely relate to not caring about or being interested in current trends or social media and feeling free when I think less about what others think about and think more about what feels good to me.
I did this. The Purge was literally my favourite part. I tried on eeeeeeeverything. And said, "Is this me? Am I comfortable? Would I put this on and walk out the door?" And everything that wasn't, I got rid of. Looking at what was left a theme became really apparent, both in style, cut, and colour. I kept a few pieces that were sentimental or valuable, or which bridged a now-easily-seen gap in my wardrobe, but overall I dropped about 70% of my clothes and gained so much peace of mind, not to mention wardrobe space. It's a lot of dresses, blouses, blues, greens, creams, and coppers. I'm so much happier getting dressed.
i loveee your questions! “is this me? am i comfortable? would i put this on and walk out the door?” i’m definitely applying this, thank you for sharing 💛
As I get older, I realized it's important to get clothes with comfortable material not just the look. When I declutter, it's usually the most uncomfortable, unbreathable clothes that I get rid of first regardless of how nice it look on me. While clothes that I wear all the time wear out more easily, I just need to keep multiple pieces of them. But since I wear them all the time, I wouldn't consider getting multiple pieces of the same clothes a waste.
Yes! And that’s why I have the same Vionic shoes in every color. And the same Merokeety cardigan in 6 different colors. I get variety from color, not from all different styles. I like everything in my closet. Every day I look forward to wearing every piece, again and again.
This is one of the best "capsule" videos I've seen - such a practical, non-pressure approach. I always feel overwhelmed when trying to purge my closet, but your tips seem to reasonable and no non-sense, I just love them! Thanks!
I classify my clothes into four categories: "EveryDay/Occasional/Whimsical/SpecialMatch". EveryDay: my usual office and casual garments; Occasional: clothes for special occasions and holidays; Whimsical: clothes that are completely not me, but provide the most fun and excitement; Special Match: garments that look horrible by themselves but are incredibly gorgeous in specific ensembles.
I love that despite you having your own fully flushed out style, your advice transcends the “barriers” of your “aesthetic” and are truly universal. I feel like this is somewhat rare when talking about capsule wardrobes because of the “first step: shop” mentality that most people have.
I really appreciated the emphasis of not becoming limited or restricted by thoughts/biases and starting with our own closets instead of the pressure to consume.
I was obsessed for a few months with researching my color season and creating a capsule wardrobe. I took the steps to purge my wardrobe and found out I had about two consistent colors for every season already! You really don’t have to “reinvent the wheel” with this stuff.
Same. My issue was that I was typed as both dark autumn and deep winter, sister seasons both with a mixture of cool and warm with some black added. What I found was I gravitated towards all of the cooler colors anyway, so I purged everything else and now everything goes and I can throw on whatever is clean and still look put together.
You’ve helped me so much in feeling less out of control when it comes to my wardrobe and getting dressed each day. I have OCD and really struggle with perfection AND getting rid of things. Your videos have helped me find my personal style so that when I get dressed, it doesn’t have to feel “perfect” because whatever I wear feels like me. And you’ve helped me be able to get rid of things that don’t feel like me. So thank you! Love your videos and always thinking to myself “WWCMD?”
I related to this so much: "so that when I get dressed, it doesn’t have to feel “perfect” because whatever I wear feels like me." Thank you for sharing :)
I really loved your approach. I inherited my mom's clothes (she passed away in 2022) and the mere thought of getting rid of them breaks my heart, so I really appreciate the "storage box" tip. I actually really like about 95% of my mom's clothes, but I'm not sure how to incorporate many of the pieces into my own wardrobe. She also gravitated towards warm and bright colors, whereas I tend to wear cool and dark colors. I guess it's a good thing I didn't have many clothes before, so now with all the sudden income of clothing it doesn't feel as overwhelming, even though sometimes it kind of is.
I would add that since ladies often experience changes in weight, it's also good to pull out the clothes that don't fit and store them elsewhere so you aren't swimming in stuff that is too large/small. Everything that is hanging up for use should be stuff that fits you right now. The stuff you are keeping "just in case" can go in a box on a shelf somewhere.
Love this so much. I've always told myself I would NEVER, EVER have a capsule wardrobe. I like lots of color, crop tops, bomber jackets, skinny jeans, athletic wear, graphic tees, etc. Most of those annoyingly over-organized minimalist influencers try to portray clothing and wardrobes as something that needs to be incredibly boring and limited. That just doesn't work for me. I care a lot about fashion, and I use clothes to express myself. I like have outrageous pieces that I can only wear maybe once every few months, or only twice a year. It gives me variety and more ways to express myself. So seeing this video is really, incredibly helpful, because it makes me realize that wardrobes and clothing can be looked at in a way of having a combination of pieces that work well together--REGARDLESS of individual style or taste (my basics would look like graphic tees and crop tops, not basic white or black tees)--and maybe some pieces that "spark joy," even if they don't fit into your everyday style (for me, that would be fancy mesh blouses, elaborate heels, or heavily printed or leather jackets).
You’re the first person that has in a way just combine different types of I guess “fashion related disposal” methods. the way you explained it, it makes so much more sense than just can’t getting rid of it because ‘oh this isn’t bring me happiness to bring me joy or I haven’t worn those in three years and I really want to keep it but the rule is I have to get rid of it because I haven’t worn it’ so I really like your take on this subject.
I want to add that I have decluttered ALL synthetic materials from clothes that lie next to my skin, still keeping my puff vests and coats. Organic cotton, linen, cashmere and wool are classics and feel so good, last so long.
I am turning 30 in a few months and I finally seem to have my personal style figured out after spending my entire 20s in different “fantasy self” iterations. Your videos are extremely helpful in helping me navigate how to push away all the mess in my head and be ok with dressing minimally. What I once found fun I now see as chaotic and disruptive to my mental health. Your wisdom and tips are much appreciated and very helpful! 🖤
My 14 year old granddaughter has this down to an art form. Over the last 3 years, while she's been growing and changing shape she has had several 'capsule ' wardrobes. The first one was largely pink ( think Elle in Legally Blonde), then moved to black and white, then brown and cream. Last year was white, white, white with a bit of blue. This year she's much the same size as last year, but I see the mix and match coming in....a black velvet jacket, a pink crop top, khaki trousers. A different outfit every time I see her, but the clothes themselves are the same ones, just reassembled with maybe a belt or scarf or something small added sometimes. She's taught both her mother and myself how to slim down a wardrobe, and what new to buy.
Love your videos! I did a big declutter last year. I donated all the old items in which I felt frumpy and that I honestly didn't enjoy wearing anymore. I'm so happy now to be left with my "nice" things which I thought were too good to wear everyday. I love showing up as the best version of myself now :)
Yes girl!! Showing up as the best version of ourselves is major key! So I haven’t decluttered yet BUT within the last year or so, I’ve started wearing things that I thought were “too nice” for everyday activities like running errands or a small family gathering. Now I’m excited to go somewhere and it’s boosted my confidence. Family, friends and even random people (men and women) compliment my outfits
Haven't decluttered yet but Wow, I've realized a lot of my wardrobe is "frumpy clothes that I don't really like but feel I "should" wear" and "stuff that's too nice for me or the occasion". I do have clothes I actually like AND actually wear, but I still wear them in a regimented way - this is my outfit for home, this is for going to the grocery store, this is for going out somewhere (rarely happens these days😆)
Thank you for including "clothes you hope to fit into one day" in your decluttering system! I'm actively trying to lose weight (4lbs down so far!), and have so many outfits that I hope to fit into one day but can't currently wear 😭 Now I can better visualize what I CAN wear right this moment, without losing those outfits I want to hang onto!
Seconded, I have lost almost 45, and now am lighter than I have been in literal decades. I had kept clothes for years because they were investments or the styles were ones I loved that are no longer offered in stores (I love really unique pieces). I weighed it by how much it would cost to replace the item or how difficult it would be. I also had no idea what my body was going to look like as far as shape. The fun part was that at every milestone, I could get rid of the stuff that was way too big and shop my own closet. You got this.
Heyyy pls do not eat after 7pm and train yrself to eat half of yr current calorie intake. The stomach is stretchy and can get used to max capacity being 5kg instead of 10kg. Workout on an empty stomach in the morning and eat after. You will lose the extra weight ❤😊
i love the vibes here. i feel like you perfectly explained what the essence of the wardrobe actually is, and allowing the viewer to choose whatever that means for them without pressure to be aa certain way. I love it!
Getting ready every day became such an issue that for Christmas my boyfriend gave me 500$ to completely redo my entire closet. I purged out a lot that I outgrew. It’s like I turned 27 & completely realized how much I didn’t want to wear the same clothes I was wearing when I was 19-25. Now I just need to figure out my style. I feel lost
That gets everyone at about that age because you get to start deciding what kind of human you really want to be, not based on your income, or your friend group, or outside obligations and expectations, but your own choices. When you hit 40, you get the IDGAF I’m gonna wear what I wants. I am terrible with envisioning it on me from how a garment looks online. I would offer the suggestion to go to a really well stocked thrift shop and try on anything that strikes your fancy, color, fabric (silk gets me every time), If you fall in love, it’s not that expensive so you won’t feel like it’s a huge commitment, and given that many people’s bodies change at around that point, you can see what cuts fit and flatter you best, especially since they often have “outdated” shapes. If you love it, think about what it is that you like, color, shape, fabric. Don’t worry about a label for your style because you’re figuring out what you like. For me, I found I like multipurpose, unique items, and little to no print with interesting details or asymmetry, or wild print with simple cut. I like a mix of masculine and feminine detailing, so floaty fabric in tailored cuts or stiffer fabrics in more feminine silhouettes. So for me, my style is not something defined by standard label but literally balance of style with a unique twist. Once you find your “words” and colors, you can invest in pieces that you will really love, Hannah Louise Poston, here on RUclips, does great breakdowns of how to invest in pieces without falling into overboard consumerism.
@@kaitlynejonestons of $ = tons of choices = more confusion. The variety and finds at thrift stores are amazing! You can find lots of stuff for little $ and as the video says - little guilt! $500 may not get you everything you ultimately want, but it + thrifting is the Perfect way to experiment, explore, and find your style for this next phase in your life.
A capsule wardrobe is always all the pieces that we love and wear over and over again, what upsets me is when I spend money on something I don’t cherish, I actually have a “ rule “, if it is full price or expensive I get it in black or neutral but if it is inexpensive I might experience with something more fun! This might be your best video ever,so happy for you and your journey, best wishes
What a great approach. I've been through my clothes in the past week and realised I'm in my happy place in jeans, cardigans, blouses & flats. So everything else went and I feel great in everything in my wardrobe now. I'm too old for maybes though. They went. I might regret that 🤭
I have become good at culling and organizing my wardrobe after watching videos by several of my favourite RUclipsrs. I retired so my clothing needs have changed, but I still like to look stylish and smart. I am not a minimalist but I like to be organized and know what I have. I have stopped buying things on impulse but have enjoyed the search for key pieces. I do love to shop but am not tempted to buy things I don’t think I really need. I like shopping my closet and have found many treasures. I do love your blue shoes! Glad to see you are working on your debt. When I retired, I was debt free. It has made life easier. I inherited some money so I was able to renovate my house without borrowing. Enjoy your videos.
I feel so validated watching this video! On my to do list for years now, I've had a "figure out your personal style" check box and I've personally decided to bite the bullet. But being a broke, soon-to-be-college student, shopping in an economy like this is a very hard decision. A few weeks ago, I decided i would "vibe check" my closet in the sense of keeping what I like, putting away what I don't like and trying to give a chance to pieces I wasn't so sure about. Finding this video tells me I was on the right track.
Great term!! Good luck in school! When I was in college, a friend attending Reed in PDX gave me a slim copy of "the Impoverished Student's Book Of Cookery, Drinkery and Housekeepery" written and illustrated by former Reedies in the 60s - a wonderful little tome!!
This is the best closet de clutter video I’ve seen. I especially love the tips for “maybes”. I live where we have seasonal wardrobes, so I move clothes to a cedar closet twice a year, which is a good time for purge. I love jackets and blazers, and kept hanging on to them even though I never wore them. Why? Because I can’t stand bunched up layered sleeves and my blazer would end up on the back of my chair. My desire to wear them led me to shop in my closet and I realized that all I needed to do was wear a sleeveless shell under the blazer, rather than a shirt. Suddenly I had all these really cute options and almost a whole new seasonally appropriate wardrobe of things I already owned in combinations no one had seen before. I also kind of like the idea of turning hangers outward and reversing them the first time you wear a garment. At the end of the season, you can see the things you haven’t worn and ask yourself why. Do you not like it? Do you love it but just didn’t have an appropriate event to wear it? Does it need repair or alteration, or just some thought about how to style it? Is it nice, but you know you would always choose something else and maybe someone else would benefit from owning it? Shopping your closet, creating new looks is almost as much fun as shopping the mall and certainly cheaper.
LOVE this! Going to attempt with my 5 year old before back to school! I try to make her wear everything in her closet before she grows out of it, but really she is allowed to have her own personal style and NOT wear certain pieces she’s uncomfortable in just because they were a gift or mommy thinks it’s cute.
Great time to help her learn this! it could be fun to have her help you with yours as well - including dressing up in the funniest outfit you can! I sometimes ask my grands (11-23) what they think of a particular outfit!
I really like your approach of discovering that "My favorite clothes are my favorites for a reason!" And that reason is that that's elementally who I am! Yep. Love this video.
Thanks to your content (especially your idea of the "fantasy self" we buy clothes for) I reduced my entire wardrobe down to only what I love. My entire wardrobe consists of colors that match, clothes that fit well, so the idea of a capsule ended up not being needed! I have enough room in my closet to see what I have immediately and store what I don't need for the season. And i definitely have way more clothes left than you. I think finding the right amount of clothes is based on how you feel when you look at your closet- inspired or overwhelmed?
When I was 18 or 19, I fell down a YT rabbit hole and watched a bunch of Justine Leconte’s videos about what clothes look good on you based on your skin tone, body shape, etc. I went to the thrift store for my birthday and bought a bunch of clothes-some of them were great and some were not. I didn’t succeed in making a capsule wardrobe in that first attempt, but I learned a lot more about what I like and what looks good on me. When someone stole most of my laundry on my 23rd birthday and my friend gave me a bunch of money to replace it with, I knew my style. Now I have a capsule wardrobe and it is very colorful. It’s also comfortable, fun, and I get compliments all the time. It’s such a blessing.
Excellent! Start with the closet you already have! I live in the midwest USA and the weather varies considerably from season to season. I've found doing a monthly capsule to be a very good way of rotating my existing wardrobe pieces and getting the full use of all my pieces.
Such a good reminder… you nailed it - capsule wardrobes should be the items you wear & love. I have a lot of clothes but it really does come to wearing clothes for the life you have now. With the pandemic, change in weight, change of lifestyle my patterns have changed for sure.
Thank you for this video it came at just the right time. I just walked into my closet and felt so overwhelmed, but instead of decluttering I bought more. I have this idea that I'm trying to create the perfect wardrobe. I keep buying what I think I should have because of the influencers then when I get it it doesn't suit me. In the last six months I have spent a ridiculous amount of money on things that I do not like and don't use. I also end up in this position because I'm trying to spend the least amount on the pieces and end up buying things that are not exactly what I want but I figure I could make work. I have looked at so many videos about clothes decluttering and finding your perfect wardrobe but none have come close to giving me a clear direction like this video. Thank you so much I finally have a plan and clear direction and I am excited. Can't do anything about the money spent but I can do something about what I spend or don't spend in the future.
This has to be my favorite "find your style" video I've seen. Your method dismantles the "ideal self" we all find by selecting photos we like. And, as you've mentioned in other videos, the ideal self can really lead to wardrobe (and life!) dissatisfaction. This method also reveals how many "just because" pieces are in a wardrobe. For me, at one point in my life, I had a lot of pieces "just because" they were free in college, or "just because" I used to work out more, or "just because" it fit or was comfortable....but I hated the color. I think if I would have done a "hell yes" pile at that time, there would have been very few in that pile. That said, a small "hell yes" pile can still inform me of my personal style. And maybe my personal style isn't practical for a short time in my life (just having a baby), but I can maybe be okay with that. I don't have to go online to find my style; it's still there - it's just buried for a short while during a life-altering event, and I can go to those few items when I need a pick-me-up. When I transition into a new phase of life (as I've done recently), I can determine how to slowly build my hell yes pile, and gladly declutter my "just because" pile.
This video is so amazing I can’t even tell you. I’m impressed by how you were able to make this process so personal to each individual’s style because we may not like the classic black/white/beige or we might! I shared it with all my friends! Thanks again
so glad it's been helpful!! Yes! I strongly feel everyone can and should embrace what they like, wholly and fully for themselves. No need for a pinterest infographic style wardrobe if that's not what resonates! :)
One of THE best, if the THE best clothing declutter videos ever! I've watched hundreds of them and for me, this made the most sense. Thanks SO much for this amazing video.
These tips and steps are actually practical how to‘s that anyone can start doing today. Thank you so much for sharing! I have been in the stage of styling my may be pieces the last couple of weeks. I wore an outfit just a couple of days ago that caused me to discover I do not like The more corporate style looks. I am also discovering that I do not like following outfit formulas I see here and everywhere on myself. I definitely need a more bold and unique twist to my outfits. I have also found that I am not wearing black. I’m also not wearing stark white but more creams and tans, browns, lighter navy, and some burnt brick red colors. I am more drumed to midtone warm colors so I’m going with it! I don’t think black and white are going to be part of my base colors that it seems most people follow for their wardrobes. I am also more drawn to having interesting shoes so I’m currently on the hunt for something unique. I struggle with dressing appropriately for my climate while also dressing for my personal style and preferences. I really like thin, light layers of clothing rather than chunky silhouettes. So that causes me to look more for 100% wool, cashmere, and lighter cotton and linen. I also really love silk and I’ve been looking for more raw and noil silk pieces in silhouettes that I like. I am really learning to find my personal style outside of shopping; it’s really such a small part of our personal style and I had it completely backwards for the last two years! I was trying to find my personal style through shopping and buying a bunch of different things and that just does not work… But I do have to say that I did find several “hell yes” pieces through this process!
So I just got done sorting through everything, and trying on pieces in my “maybe” pile and I am shocked!! I didn’t realize that I had so many great outfits already. This was so helpful, and I think I finally found my style! Thank you for helping with my overwhelming stress of my closet😵💫
What a lot of other youtubers/influencers don't mention is that decluttering and shaping your capsule wardrobe TAKES TIME (not including time taken to shop for the perfect pieces). Amongst the three piles, the "maybe" pile is likely the biggest. It takes time and effort to plan how those pieces can be incorporated into your weekly outfits. For me, who's not too creative/artsy, it can be mentally draining to deal with the maybes everyday and I end up putting it off for days. I'm already 3years into decluttering but still working on my wardrobe. When it comes to the "hell no" pile, if you're not keen on buy-and-throw, it also takes time to find sincere organizations/shops/people who are keen to take over those pieces and give them a second life. So big big big thank you for pointing out that we can store things away!
For getting rid of stuff it took me only a couple of hours. I just put clothes on a rack and table in my driveway with a FREE sign and watched streams of people excitedly take things away. Some people came to chat which was nice. NO painful search to find the right organisation to take your old clothes needed. Most people who try this end up putting them in storage till they end up out of date musty moth eaten items and end up tossing them in the end 🥴
@@tomjones2157 Glad that method works for you! In my country most people live in apartments and that means we don’t have driveway/yard for sales/giveaways. We could leave it outside our apartments but generally it will become trash instead. We actually have to for apply for a table/booth during certain events before we have that space at parks / outside malls for such giveaways. Until then, we are on our own trying to find sincere takers or putting things up online.
Thanks for your honesty and breaking down these steps! I've been pursuing minimalism and decluttering for many years but there is always more to declutter with things always coming in. Thanks for not pushing people to buy more! That's definitely encouraging and hopeful to me. I've watched some of your other videos and walking away I feel that I can give myself permission to find and keep clothes that I feel good in, no matter my current size. I've started going through my closet and finding ways to repurpose things I haven't been wearing like an old pair of jeans that I just turned into shorts. I even hemmed a couple t shirts that were way too long and didn't flatter me. Thanks for the inspiration and ideas!!
As someone who barely has any clothes and doesn’t like going overly fancy and… LOVES BLAZERS I see an absolute win in discovering this channel. I have been thinking of making myself a capsule wardrobe and I’m HERE for it!
This video made me realize my challenge is that my aesthetic preferences and my comfort preferences are really different.. so my "hell yes" pile is full of contradictory pieces... I like to wear flowy dresses and skirts because I hate the feeling of fabric close to my skin.. but for the same reason I have no tight shirts to go with those flowy skirts... at the same time, I feel my best when I am wearing androgynous or masculine clothing - my most favourite pieces are oversized men's button down shirts made of natural materials like silk and linen, and I typically like the way I look in these when I have pants on.. but of course I never reach for pants because I have a hard time wearing them for more than an hour or two.... uhg.
This was a really nice video! I love that there's not pressure to keep X number of pieces. I love that it focuses on "shopping" my closet and leaning hard into slow fashion basics. Thank you :)
I love the message in this video! I like the idea of a capsule wardrobe but also love the variety I have in my closet. Your method takes the guilt out of a storage box and having a 100 piece wardrobe. Thanks so much!
Finally someone with common sense! (And pleasant to listen to). If one more person suggested a blazer, heels and neck scarf accessory as essentials (when none of these work for me) I was going to scream. 🤣 Finding your own style in your own wardrobe to start is brilliant. I also find if certain items like well cut bottoms or shirt, just buy a second in same or different colour. If it works it will get worn. This opens up options for different styles or needs- for example a menopausal woman may need lighter layers even in cooler weather. Someone who has a very low budget can also use this theory. No one is excluded. Your approach gives so much flexibility.
I'm 27 and have lost 50kgs over the last year-this is the first video that has helped. I have a hundred things that used to fit, don't fit now, never will fit etc that for whatever reason I kept trying to build around. This has given me the motivation and information to actually sustainably solve my wardrobe dilemma vs trying to buy my way out of it.
Congratulations!!! That's awesome I hope you feel empowered and are able to enjoy the new you! I'm not sure what that would be like, I lost 39.8 lbs several years ago and what I first struggled with was buying clothes that were small enough. I finally went to an upscale shop and the sales lady put me in a few things that allowed me to see my shape again. I didn't buy much- returned for the sales;) But this experience was priceless... a real eye opener for what to look for and plan. Definitely worth the time:))
Haven't been able to find a thing to wear lately except for the same few items. Watched this, went through my whole wardrobe today -- yikes! -- tried it all on, ditched whatever didn't fit, was uncomfortable or impractical for me. What's left are things I really want to wear, they fit, look good on me and it's buildable. Found a bunch of really great outfits and a few outstanding forgotten pieces. Basically uncovered a pallet of coordinated colors and styles from what was already there, just buried. I don't have a huge wardrobe but so much wasn't working for me, now there are four big bags bound for the thrift store, some with tags. Identified a few key pieces to add -- valuable shopping information. The combination of decluttering and capsule is fabulous. Thank you for the great video!
I did this several years before watching this video out of frustration about how many clothes i had that I just didn't like. I got rid of everything I didn't love/wasn't comfy and now my wardrobe is slowly growing into a beautiful style for me to wear every day. I maybe buy a new item every few months max and only things that I know I will love. The stress of getting dressed is so diminished and I feel beautiful in my clothes every day.
So this comes at a great time. After years of tentatively going through clothes one at a time, I’ve always had too many clothes. I WEAR them all. But they barely fit in my tiny space, my childhood bedroom I STILL have. I finally just took EVERYTHING out of my closet, drawers, and floor (because they literally don’t all fit) and I have over 10 trash bags of clothes. This is gonna be a process, but I believe in myself.
I've been using the capsule wardrobe system for a few years now, but my taste continues to change, so the clothes that sit wardrobe have changed a lot over time. I do feel like my style now has come to a place where I feel content, but when I add in new pieces, I personally enjoy having a cohesive color palette so that I'm not just buying things that don't work with the rest of what I have. With all of this said though, this guide is very much simplistic and easy to follow. 😊
Glad I have something to do with the maybe pile. It seems like most of my clothing falls into that category. I've also been dealing with a lot of bloating, so a lot of clothing doesn't fit right. I don't see myself being bloated forever.
I really like that you made this about the clothes we own and what we actually like. I have often felt lost listening to people talk about capsule wardrobes because they always center around pieces like a white button up shirt that are just not for me- it doesn't fit my life, or my body shape, and it isn't my taste. I live in the southern midwest so it's hard to figure out how my style and lifestyle would fit with those plans.
This is a great approach to discerning one's style, and using what we have and love! I really appreciate the tips on integrating the *maybes* back in! I'm doing this as I prep to move into Grannie Flat - and went through my closet a few months ago with my grown daughter's help! I've been wearing more of those 'forgot I had this' pieces and enjoying them.
I'm very glad you addressed color. Not everyone feels or looks good in beige/white/black/navy. Also, as we age, our skin tone changes and these can make us look pale and sallow. Often when women go gray, suddenly the full spectrum of blues look fantastic
I always seem to grab black or white and a few accent colors in between. I discoverd I don't like variety as much in my closet as I was tought to like. This was very helpful, thank you!
This is literally the best video I've seen so far about cleaning my closet. I have so many pieces that I get overwhelmed and don't even know where to start. I've watched soo many videos trying to reduce the amount of clothing and finding out what works for my new style (and what's from previous style that's not working for me anymore). Thank you so much, I can't wait to put this method for a test and make the everyday experience of choosing what to wear less stressful.
I can’t even explain how i love this video. Your perspective on the maybe pile is new and refreshing. I absolutely LOVE how we should challenge ourselves to style our “maybe pieces”. It’s much more sustainable and may actually help you. Also I love the idea of building your ideal capsule closet from the stuff you already own and not buying some basics and new clothes to fit your desired unreachable style. Thank you for your helpful advice 🫶🏻✨
I love this concept of a "hell yeah" pile. I think this will be really helpful when going through my wardrobe. I always just think of what I want to get rid of, never what I love and should build my style around.
What i love about something you said in this video about either putting it away for later or styling it, is that that applies to so many things in life. we ignore things, put off making decisions about things, and keep saying someday, all while we are surrounded by clutter and things that are forgotten in literal limbo b/c we put off making the DECISION. i know things take time, but that's the biggest thing i learned in the my minimal/kon marie journey: YOU NEED TO MAKE A DECISION. that can even mean putting things away and making a calendar reminder to come back to it later b/c putting off decisions or saying i'll worry about that later never works.
This was so helpful! My "style" has changed so much over the years because I don't really dress for me, I dress for my occupation. I was a preschool teacher, then elementary school teacher, then nanny, and now I'm back in school and have the freedom to choose what I want to wear because I like it and not because it will serve a function. I don't really throw out clothes so I have a lot to go through, but I'm definitely going to try this method... even if I might need the whole floor and not just my bed to see all the piles 😅
I’m 65 and still trying to figure “it” out. This was very helpful. I I’ve been buying clothes that I see other people wear, but in reality, they don’t fit my lifestyle. I made jeans, T-shirt, blazer, kind of girl, and this is what I’m going to work with now.
Thank you so much for this accessible and welcoming video! I love your attitude about it. I’ve been really struggling with my style for the past year. I turned 21 and suddenly felt this urge to dress like how I finally feel- an adult. Problem is I still technically fit into my teen clothes, but never wear them because they remind me of being really depressed. I haven’t bought many new items either, so I’ve just been putting whatever is clean on just to cover my body. I also get tons of donations from family members and feel bad saying no, so I have a bunch of other people’s used clothes that look nice on the hanger, but don’t fit exactly or feel like me. I feel very lost in a sea of clothes with nothing to wear. This video is just what I’ve been needing. 💜
I really love how no shopping is needed to find your style! For a while I had thought that the best way to find my style is to go from store to store trying on one thing and another when, in reality, all that “information” was sitting at home right in my closet! It is just a process of analyzing your preferences and using that information to guide you into your style :] Thank you for this great video! ❤️
My method for maybe pile is storing away the YES items from same category ... that will make me actually wear and experience them. Helps greatly to decide if you are not really planning person.
I love the idea that you keep what you love, especially since I have clothes that fit me, and I love, but aren’t necessarily a part of my current lifestyle. They aren’t for the fantasy me so much as future me (looking for work), and many of the cuts, colors and styles aren’t available or they are made better than anything I would find now, true investments
I like skirts probably best of anything. I also like dresses. It got so that I barely wore pants. But I decided to thrift some more pants and now my "hell yes" pile includes orange jeans. I still feel like I lean towards skirts but I enjoy having options. I leaned into a capsule wardrobe by fully eliminating most colors of clothes so that it was easier to mix and match. I've decided to reintroduce a handful of additional colors and I am loving them. It's helping to re-evaluate and streamline my closet into things that I enjoy vs just bare colors that make it easier to create outfits.
I also have a diy pile. For example something like a plaid skirt that I want to turn into a top or a dress that I need to tighten up a bit before it's wearable
Super advice. You have been super helpful. I struggle with buying " one off " pieces that my eyes fix onto- but often they do relate to my fantasy self or occasional use and I have nothing to go with said item and it's not that practical. So each item I see I will ask myself do I already have something similar, will I wear it often, etc. I am trying to just buy things that enhance the clothes I love to wear frequently. Still a work in progress but I'm getting there. X
Hehe! My fantasy self has been the hardest person to deal with. She keeps on thinking she's going to host awesome dinner parties, go out to posh events, walk down a red carpet...somewhere, yet in real life I don't do any of those. Lol! I've given up on buying that "special" item that I never wear & what a relief!
It was beautifully explained and I can only confirm that it works. I constantly monitor and (if necessary) purge my wardrobe and have done for years. The practice efficiently clears any confusion as to what suits you and what you like (=personal style). Loved the video.
This was so helpful! As a person who loves wearing bold pieces, I’m always such a snob for capsule wardrobe or closet decluttering videos bc of the thought I have to have beige/black/white/navy all the time. This makes me feel more comfortable and less intimidated to start the task of purging! Thank you so much!
I like different styles of dressing depending on if I’m working on the farm, hiking or going to a more formal event or dinner out. I like simple and structured like Chanel. But jeans and plaid shirts with sweaters during the winter. Some of these tips are really good. I don’t go through my clothes enough and fear throwing things out because everything is so expensive now. I also lose and gain weight depending on certain things, so I like different sizes in a range of 2 sizes. Sizes are different for different clothing.
Fantastic advice. I recently did a huge purge and put some stuff in storage. I have found that some things I kept, I don't actually want. Now I need to start bringing back some of the stored items and see if I can integrate any of that stuff back in or if I want it to go. Fabulous way to look at the process. Thanks!
I love how you’re not telling people what to do - you’re showing us HOW to do what WE want. Also, how did the algorithm know that this is exactly when I needed this video?! 🤯 I’m about halfway through a pretty significant weight loss (currently down 7 kg. / 15-ish pounds) AND my new closet will be delivered next week. The coming weekend IS The Wardrobe Purge and I feel a lot better dressed for it 😉 now
loved this! Mine is made up of pink, darkish blue, black and white with a little bit of Khaki sprinkled in. I used to always wear jeans, but doing this and then trying to fill the gaps helped me find a completely new style of pants that totally fits with my style! Also no patterns or prints for me, except on hoodies, as I found out after every single one of my printed t-Shirts went to the hell no pile, except for one sentimental piece which ended up on the maybe pile.
My capsule is more on bodycon dresses, high waisted jeans and trousers, crop tops, button downs and blazers. Before learning capsule wardrobe I’ve always liked neutral colors so the items I removed are items that are polyester’s and replaced them with natural fibers.
Very sensible. I enjoy your approach. You might also add an alteration option to your pile of clothes that don’t fit if you still like the style. Much cheaper than finding a new one in a different shape/size. And there are companies starting up now who will essentially trade your good condition clothes for specific items you are looking for, for a low fee, which would be an excellent way to start rounding out a capsule. For example, sending off a load of blazers that you had for a previous job and asking for a couple of fun hats, chunky cardigans and thigh high boots in return…. Good for the wallet and planet and very low effort.
This is the best RUclips video about building a capsule wardrobe I’ve ever seen - and believe me, I’ve seen them all!😄 Now I finally know what I have to do! I’ve been putting a lot of thought into what my ideal capsule would look like so that it’ll be perfect and I can live with it forever. But I never found the right concept so I didn’t change anything because I didn’t wanna do anything wrong. Just watched this video and will head to my closet right now and get started! Thank you!💕
What I love that's unique to my situation is I have divorced parents. One of my parents lives in a place where I have very little closet space so a lot of my clothes are left at my other parents house. Since my parents live states away I leave half my wardrobe for at least 3-5 months and when I come back its like Im either so excited to wear them again or I haven't missed them and I know I can get rid of them.
Let me know if you try this and what you discover about your style!
@@kristinai5269 thanks for letting me know Kristina! I’m putting them on hiatus for now. I’ll take down the whole thing.
Cheers!
Can you tell me how you fix it please? I always have the gap at the waist but I'm kinda scared of ruining the pants
Manufacturers base their size ideas on those grotesque WalMart videos I guess. Why should you the healthy have to modify your clothes?
Yes! A tailor is major key as well as a shoe cobbler
Too much effort for me. Getting rid of those items, I’m wearing the stuff that really fits properly
If you really loved that item, you would have taken it to the tailor or the cobbler already
I really love the steps in here that give us permission to store "maybe" items. Decluttering has become such a Thing, but I see now that "love it or toss it" is seriously black and white thinking, and there's nothing wrong with having a storage box I return to a few times a year.
💯 agree!!
Right! In the past 10 years I've definitely cycled through the same clothes multiple times depending on my situation in life.
the storage box is actually a pretty big step in decluttering. if you find yourself needing certain items you can go get them from the box thus cementing them as "keep" items but if other items haven't moved in a year from the box you can donate them
what is key for me in making that "maybe" box or storage box is clearly setting a time that you will go back and revisit those items (like actually making a calendar reminder for ex) b/c otherwise, it's so easy for those things to slip into the black abyss of "out of sight out of mind" limbo
No pressure ever! It’s my fave but if it’s not you, it won’t be a hell yes part of your wardrobe so why bother? Love it!
This must be one of the most practical and actually sensible approaches I've seen in capsule videos. Loads of them suggest starting from moodboards and visions, that make your current wardrobe feel absolute and old. Choosing fave pieces and working around is much more sustainable
Yeah and who has time for mood boards lol. I’m literally a housewife and I still wouldn’t make time for that 🤣
As someone who owns WAY too many clothes, I feel like this method is great to do on laundry day. Everything in your hamper it’s safe to say is probably a hell yes because you’ve clearly been wearing it. Then everything left over in your closet is what you need to work with. Love this idea!
You're soo right, definetly gonna do it that way
What if I just wear my average-looking clothes because I want to save my good outfits for special events
@@Anonymous-wi6ig Think of it like fine china or fancy cologne. Some people choose to preserve them and bring them out only during special events. Others believe that the future is not guaranteed and that they should be enjoyed whenever possible. At the end of it all, it comes down to the person.
Not all heroes wear capes.... thank you!
don't think this would work for me because i have a tendency to wear whatever's easier to reach and dress on even though i dislike the way it makes me look :'') but can definitely help someone!
This has made me realize my closet looks like a goth valentine's day. My closet after purging is almost exclusively black, red, and pink, but that's what suits me so that's what my capsule is 🤷🏽♀️ this was helpful!
I LOVE that!!
Mine too black red and pink I swear to you 🤣
haha mine too but switch the pink with army green. My sister says my style is everday witch lol.
@@Em-fz5uh same! :)
Mine is just black and blue 🖤💙
I struggled with the purge until I learned how my body shape directed the style of clothing that looked best on me. I kept pieces that I thought were basics but the cut of the item didn’t suit my shape. For example there are many different types of white t-shirts. I figured out why I chose to wear some over others and it had to do with my shape. This helped me purge those items that weren’t my favorite.
I've had this same realization. I mean, who knew there were so many shapes of "white" (black, etc.) tshirts? So many SHAPES and how did I want it to fit ME? Feeling glad I'm not the only one who had to think about this ❤️
This is key! I realized this recently and it's been a gamechanger when deciding which pieces I'll keep in my wardrobe.
Same! For me it was necklines 🤗 Once I realized V-neck and low neck looked MUCH better than crew or turtle neck lines, decluttering became much easier ☺️
Sooo true. Exactly this. It’s a layered learning experience.
Thanks for sharing it 🌸
Not watched you before but you sold me in the first minute in your "No White shirt rule, you don't have to wear beige if you don't want to and you can have as much colour as you want" Like lady for that alone I now am vibing with you
For the longest time I thought I was into trenchcoats, fisherman stripes, heeled boots, dainty layered necklaces, handbags… Beige, white, black.
Me too😊exactly!
You just described me perfectly!
Need to save your comment and read it again and again.
Coming from a 72 year old.
“is this me? am i comfortable? would i put this on and walk out the door?”
i’m definitely applying this, thank you for sharing 💛
As I get older, I realized it's important to get clothes with comfortable material not just the look. When I declutter, it's usually the most uncomfortable, unbreathable clothes that I get rid of first regardless of how nice it look on me. While clothes that I wear all the time wear out more easily, I just need to keep multiple pieces of them. But since I wear them all the time, I wouldn't consider getting multiple pieces of the same clothes a waste.
Ain't that the truth! At a certain point life became too short for shoe blisters & uncomfortable clothes.
Yes! And that’s why I have the same Vionic shoes in every color. And the same Merokeety cardigan in 6 different colors. I get variety from color, not from all different styles. I like everything in my closet. Every day I look forward to wearing every piece, again and again.
Someone said 'only buy clothes that make you do a little dance'. I like that. Like what you emotionally love.
This is one of the best "capsule" videos I've seen - such a practical, non-pressure approach. I always feel overwhelmed when trying to purge my closet, but your tips seem to reasonable and no non-sense, I just love them! Thanks!
So glad it helps! Build your wardrobe on your own terms 🥰🥰
I classify my clothes into four categories: "EveryDay/Occasional/Whimsical/SpecialMatch".
EveryDay: my usual office and casual garments;
Occasional: clothes for special occasions and holidays;
Whimsical: clothes that are completely not me, but provide the most fun and excitement;
Special Match: garments that look horrible by themselves but are incredibly gorgeous in specific ensembles.
Thank you for saying this, these has been my 4 categories for a while but never could "label" what it was.🎉
I love that despite you having your own fully flushed out style, your advice transcends the “barriers” of your “aesthetic” and are truly universal.
🥹🥹 you got this! I’m so glad youre approaching your wardrobe in a way that feels like you!
You got it! ❤️❤️
I love it!
I love your videos - really connects to me - the whole dilemma between loving fashion and wanting to be minimal
Did you manage to change your wardrobe with 500$?
I feel that’s nowhere near enough for that task… 😭 or maybe am I wrong?
@@J.Locuples yeah definitely didn’t 😭 not enough at all. Then when you don’t know when your style is it makes it harder lmao
I love that! “Vibe check”! So good!
@@1Lightdancer exactly! You know kids are brutally honest.
I store things by winter and summer. But I think I need to start storing some of the pieces that are in a "between seasons" sort of category.
@A Zoe "inspired or overwhelmed" - helpful point :)
I love that you suggest decluttering your current wardrobe to discover your capsule wardrobe. So good.
Excellent! Start with the closet you already have! I live in the midwest USA and the weather varies considerably from season to season. I've found doing a monthly capsule to be a very good way of rotating my existing wardrobe pieces and getting the full use of all my pieces.
I may try this. My closet is too overwhelming with all my clothes out
Such a good reminder… you nailed it - capsule wardrobes should be the items you wear & love.
I love how much creativity you say to incorporate in this! Makes it feel more freeing rather than restricting.
So glad!
I love how creative you are with staying in style and still staying a minimalist. Definitely using these tips 🙏🏽
Good for you! I use navy as my alternate to black and it works so well.
So I just got done sorting through everything, and trying on pieces in my “maybe” pile and I am shocked!! I didn’t realize that I had so many great outfits already. This was so helpful, and I think I finally found my style! Thank you for helping with my overwhelming stress of my closet😵💫
This makes me so happy! 🥹
11:46 really speaks to knitters and yarn (and perhaps any collection). Thank you!
That sounds like something the duo app would have as a sentence
@@missk7170 duo wants to ask if you’ve finished your today’s practice lessons yet? 🔪
I’m so glad you mention storing as a valid option. I’m glad I have business wear stored away that I actually like should the need arise.
This video made me realize my challenge is that my aesthetic preferences and my comfort preferences are really different.. so my "hell yes" pile is full of contradictory pieces... I like to wear flowy dresses and skirts because I hate the feeling of fabric close to my skin.. but for the same reason I have no tight shirts to go with those flowy skirts... at the same time, I feel my best when I am wearing androgynous or masculine clothing - my most favourite pieces are oversized men's button down shirts made of natural materials like silk and linen, and I typically like the way I look in these when I have pants on.. but of course I never reach for pants because I have a hard time wearing them for more than an hour or two.... uhg.
That’s totally me 😊
This was a really nice video!
Exactly! I have some really unique pieces and having the option to switch them out keeps them from wearing out as quickly.
One of the easiest and simple capsule wardrobe videos I’ve seen to date. This made so much more sense!!
Thank you for being so inclusive and accepting of those of us who do not fit the standard mold 😍
Remember to donate old clothing to charity places, so the less fortunate can also look nice in your 'old clothing'👌
This makes me finally feel better for getting grey, white and black clothes!!! Or brown or navy- the variety is in the styles of the clothes
i had some hell yes items that had holes/stains and instead of throwing them away i embroidered on them to fix them and now i love them even more!
Thank u! Finally a practical and realistic approach to “capsule“
wardrobe. My approach is wanting a more mindful wardrobe.
PS Also consider once you have your style, to find a good dressmaker, some basic patterns tailored to you, and get them made up as you need them.
Absolutely agree!
