Once I started decluttering, I realized that many of us weren’t taught HOW to build a wardrobe for long term. I mean I get why, since our wardrobes for the first 12-18 yrs of our lives are disposable since we grow out of what we wear, but the underlying themes of basics and staples (for me) were completely missing. I think that’s why I always bought from a place of scarcity. If I had built a closet filled with high quality basics first, and figured out what my staples were, I don’t feel like I would’ve purchased as much. When you don’t have lots of pieces that actually pair well together, then it certainly does feel like you have gaps, probably because you do. But that would be easily fixed by building a solid foundation of basics and staples first.

Mandy, I think that is sooo true! And I want to add: I wish we would have been taught a lot of useful things like how to read a contract, how to apply for a job, what insurances to get or how to invest. Or just how to plug eyebrows. 😅🙈
I want to write a book: „What you need to know when you grow up“. Then I will include all the useful information you will need as a young adult. 🤩

Absolutely! But even knowing that you need to build a wardrobe on a foundation of staple pieces, it still takes time to learn which staples suit your lifestyle, colors and fits that suit your body shape and coloring, not to mention your own personal aesthetic. It's a journey!

I stayed and worked in europe and was hungry for a lot of things.. I bought in thrift stores, sales…I moved to Canada for 7 years and now to France since pandemics…and during this confinement periods I had time to browse and watch videos on declutering…I think that everything come in time, we have to be ready for it and work for it

Alot of the need for De-Cluttering is that we haven't been taught to Plan Ahead & Chose Wisely about ANYTHING! Seeing something someone else has & think "I should have that, too"! Then it doesn't fit OUR Life Style! Bummer! "I spent all that money on this but I don't Use it, Enjoy It, or Love it! 😟 So Now What??

When it comes to basics I like to have duplicates that are exactly the same. I live in black skinny jeans outside and black mid rise leggings inside. Therefore I bought two of the same kind before the company decides to discontinue my favorite. Same thing with bras: If I tested one and like it, I will buy a duplicate. Many times I thought that I will buy a new item when the "old" one is falling apart, but then it is no longer available and the brand only has a version with a different fit, cut or material that I don't like as much.

I did that with nude bras I found at a big name supermarket/grocery store for £4, because as a black person that's like finding a unicorn at that price. 4 years later can't find those bras in store.
I need to do the same with clothes, but I'm weird in the sense that I like my wardrobe to feel like a museum so I think I want only one so it's "special", I should probably look into which ones it makes sense to duplicate. Re-shopping is very tedious.

I didn't learn too much about myself through decluttering my wardrobe, at first. But when I started decluttering my books? Wow. That was revealing. So many of my books were there to impress others. My keep-it-or-lose-it decision was based around a two-tier question: a) will I re-read it? If yes, will I be just as happy with it as an ebook? If yes, get the ebook and declutter the hard copy. If no, why not? b) If I'm not sure if I would re-read a book, am I inclined to keep it because it's meaningful to me / sparks joy just knowing that it's there on my shelf? Or, more often that I was happy to admit, am I keeping this book for bragging rights? What's so crazy about all this, is that my book case is in my bedroom, so very few people ever saw my books. But so many were there to show that I was "well read", had "intelligent" books, they were there to prove that I was "cultured" and "smart" = sophisticated. Which begged the question: just who is it I'm trying to impress? I eventually ended up going through a similar journey with my clothes. Decluttering was far more difficult and cathartic than I'd been prepared for. But what a relief to understand myself better and so gift myself the opportunity to grow. Thank you for talking so opening about your own experience! I don't have anyone IRL walking this path.

I do dress up to go shopping, eat out , go out for the day, on holiday - so alot of my wardrobe is only worn occasionally and I definitely have favourites. I do wrestle with my inner " Golem" , my crazy alter ego that loves to shop, loves fashion, loves to say "f*CK it buy it" , so I try to pause and reflect if I need or have genuine use for an item. But I also have to not constrain myself too much otherwise my Golem can rebel badly to rules- so it's a delicate balance. Watching your videos helps me with that balance. X

Then I decide If I am REALLY missing something and keep a list. Then what I could add if I have a "coup de coeur" (like a summer dress as I rarely find dresses that I like). I definitely keep clothes for a while before getting rid of them: I don't want to have any regret anymore: this is especially true for classic pieces as sometimes it is just that I have worn them a lot and want a change but think I should have kept them when I look at photos of me and think: "I looked good and it would be perfect this season why did I let it go!!!"

it can really help to have another pair of eyes - if they can be supportive and not pushy or indifferent....
My daughter helped me go through my closet a few months ago - (pruning and curating as I prep to move into a Grannie Flat!) ... and one of the phrases her hubby uses is, 'I like it, but it's kind of tried!' we'd use that, and, 'there are 3 of these - do you like/ need/ wear them all?' ... and sometimes when I'd try an item on, she'd say, 'I love that on you! Why don't I see you wearing Thomas like that more often?!'
We were able to find tune the main closet (i also have a bunch of Square Dance outfits i need to paste down!) ... and at the end we ran the bags to the thrift store!! I keep a bag or bin in my closet for things I realize I'm just not likely to wear.

Yes I would love a part two, I have been struggling with addiction to shopping for clothes for years, and now almost 58, i have sadly more shoes than I could count, more clothes than one person would ever need, and after 20 years of being a preschool teacher and taking a break for 3 months and working as a receptionist, I loved being able to dress up finally being able to use things I have collected for years, shoes, purses blazers, and my nice clothes, well tax season is almost over and my receptionist job was seasonal. So i will be starting a new job at a preschool a job where i have to wear uniforms, black work tee shirt with logo and black pants, sweats, leggings or shorts, I Literally have struggled with not taking this job finally with benefits {my past school jobs were usually churches and never had benefits} all because I don't want to wear a uniform. Sorry this is so long, but i really need to vent, and no one understands, I really need to get rid of 60 percent of my wardrobe and not let it control me any more. I use to shop when i was sad, and now i feel like i do it daily. thanks for listening .

Maybe you can take the job for now but keep looking for one with benefits that allows you to wear that beautiful wardrobe and you'd be so happy you might not continue to overbuy... but just enjoy what you have. Best of luck to you on your journey!

You love dressing up and the items you have collected. You don't have to get rid of them. Pack away the excess in seasons. Once a month take out a bundle and pick out a few items to swop out and refresh your wardrobe. Wear them at home or weekends for your enjoyment. If you get rid of them there is a high chance they will end up in landfill. It's better to get the longest best wear you can out of your things.

Retired teacher here. I started in 1988 public school in Ohio. At least 75% wore dress clothes, heels. Men in ties. In my final 15 years I witnessed, teacher t-shirts, kakies, low cut tops, skin tight everything, flip flops. Ugg. I feel that we need to dress out of respect for students and ourselves. We should be models of correct attire. I feel your pain.

As long as you have room for them, keep them. You already own them and it's nobody else's business how many clothes, shoes, etc you have. If you do have items to discard, try to sell them or give to a church or charity based organization. I have alot too, as you may have guessed. I am now trying to sell my unused items on Poshmark. I have also given some away to those who could use them. Don't feel guilty!!

I feel your pain! I am a preschool educator too, and I hate to wear uniforms. I am lucky that I don't have to wear one where I work, but sure thing I need a wardrobe for work and one for going out ☺️
Keep your beautiful clothes if you love them, why not? But if you feel like decluttering, I guarantee you it will be difficult but soooo satisfactory

Thank you for the tips and reminders. I decluttered last year and gave away a few items I wished I hadn't. 😢 This time I'm going to put most things in storage bins and then when I'd like a change or variety I will shop my own bins and my stored clothes and jackets will be a pleasant surprise. I find that this method works best for me. I'm still sad over the clothes I miss because I gave them up without taking time to store them to see if i would miss them or not before letting them go. 💔

I agree, organizing our stuff isn't about reaching an end game. It's in an ever changing state of flow. Like our lives, we're constantly evolving. I learned to ditch a scarcity mindset & adopt gratitude. It enlightened my perspective & I feel satisfied more often vs searching to fix, improve or fill a void. Also, if you have something that works, there's no need to justify it. If you have 8 pair of jeans, like the style, color, they fit & you'll likely wear them, keep them. Be grateful you already have plenty. When you stain, tear or ruin 1, you already have replacements. I appreciate you sharing this realistic approach of getting things in order to enjoy life more.

I started my journey with honesty of who I am and what I love, with minimalism all over the places I didn’t follow extreme declutter, instead analyzed where I’m and be mindful in my purchases and my wishlist have been my life saver; I have loads of screenshots and I checked regularly and suprise! Most of the items were added for impulse, doesn’t match with my lifestyle and delete.
Like you said, is different for all of us but we Can find and adapt advices to live and enjoy.

I love the way you explain your process and mindset. I got more motivated by watching your videos. So I bring a box home from work on the weekends. I pick a section or item like I went through my 13 white button downs. Pulled out about five. At least it is a start. The black jackets and blazers. Removed half of those. Either too small or the fit was not flattering. Baby step. And little by little it is getting easier. Thank you.

I really like what you said in the end about having enough and how you used to use your clothes to portrait some kind of self worth. I also come from this place and have also found it a sort of dark place to be in. Now I am genuinely content with what I have. When I feel like I 'need' something new or would like to add something else I am aware of the fact that it will not make me any happier than I am right now and not change me as a person. I'm just having fun with the things I have 😊 great video! 💐

I agree about declutter remorse ...
I found decluttering after the time of the month or feeling “hormonal” is best.
Not decluttering in haste is great advice ..little by little avoids second guessing yourself and feels empowering as your moving forward.
Use it or lose it 👌
I found its best to know yourself and declutter based on what feels right or feels good for you. What feels right for one person may not feel right for another, knowing yourself is first & foremost ~ Cheers

I really love to do decluttering because it feels so good to get rid of things I don't really need any more. However the point is not to buy anymore things that one day have to be decluttered! So the consumtion with intention is the only way to go. If I think about what new things I would "need" in the next time, there certainly is nothing that is worth to buy, because I think we all have really enough to wear. BUT there is so much fun to try new styles sometimes, so the hard way is to find the "golden middel"

After a recent (healthy) weight gain I’m struggling with the temptation to declutter all of my now ill fitting clothing. I “discovered” your channel not too long ago and I really like it. Thank you for your input regarding living an intentional life. Some years ago I used to buy clothes because they made me feel good. Then I had financial challenges and I stopped. Later what I wore and it’s quality were no linger important to me; and although I didn’t buy a lot, I notice now, that I didn’t put to much intention to it. Things are different now and I am older and looking for my style and I love it. My wardrobe is intentional now! Finding my style has made a difference in my selections.

This was a Very Interesting Video! I've learned that "This is My Life & I have to De-Clutter My Way! My "Goals" are Self Imposed & will please ME! As I've been De-Cluttering I've be doing so out of Practicality & Comfort for Myself & My Needs! This has led to My Husband Clearing out the Garage & Organizing things better! "Stuff" needs to Serve you & when it loses that Practicality, then it needs to go! I've been Clearing out my Library Shelves & am donating almost all of my books (hundreds)!! I haven't read some of them in the 21 years we've been in this house! I loved them so much & identified with the times in the past that I read them! But now, I can get all of my Favorite books on my phone thru either Kindle or Google! I will be able to enjoy Art Pieces on the Shelves of the Book Cases, now! If one thing drives me it's this...will our sons be unhappy to have to sort thru all this "Stuff" if something happens to us? (we're in our 70s) This way I can be the one to decide what is of Value & what is just junk! It's Cleansing to our Souls as well as our Home! Meanwhile we've nearly completed a 5month Remodeling of our House, which has made it easier to Clear Unnecessary Items out once & for all!

While decluttering is definitely not a bad thing - and I certainly have more clothes than I need myself now is not the time to get rid of things that can be worn.
We are seeing shortages of dry goods, appliances and furniture and even sometimes certain food items. Inflation and fuel prices are something we have have to pay attention to and supply chain situations are having a visible affect in many places. If the political climate worsens abroad- many many items will be very expensive if we can get them at all.
I totally understand how wonderful the feeling of decluttering is, and minimalism is in no way a bad thing 😊 but wait until life normalizes before getting rid of things we simply don’t want. Carefully store what is not being used, mend anything that is wearable, carefully clean and store everything.
Instead of going to the store we can look in our closets to freshen things up.
One thing is for certain we most likely will not be able to replace clothes as easily as before.
In addition it is certainly better for the environment.
But the most important thing is to enjoy life and the things we have.
I was so busy making my point I forgot to add that I loved your perspective on wardrobe and guilt. Especially feeling guilty.
I would love to see part 2 and maybe a few thoughts on the current world situation versus our wardrobes and what we choose to bring in or take out.

Hey Christina, I’m so particular, that when I find something that works for me and that I really love, I do purchase duplicates. For example, I love the snakeskin Lauren wallet from Hobo International. Everyone in my family knows that when they come out w/a new one that I’m going to purchase it. Nobody gets why I do it, but I don’t care. I’m also super organized and have containers, totes, baskets, ottomans w/storage etc…to keep all of mine and my family’s possessions in. IMO, as long as u can afford it and u have a designated spot for that item and it brings u joy, then it’s worth it. I’m so happy that you’ve been able to self reflect, practice self control, get out of debt and b at peace. I’m in debt that I’m not comfortable with and I need to work on my self control. I’m doing better and better each day. We r all a work in progress. I think the biggest take away is to just learn from your mistakes and try not to repeat them again if u can help it.

Style is so dynamic and fluid… yes! That is why your point about storage is so helpful! I have stored things away recently to open at a later time and see if it’s something I’ll incorporate. I know those pieces stood out to me enough to purchase for a reason, and maybe I just need some time to let my style evolve until I’m truly ready to use them. I bought a ton of clothes over the last year to figure out my style… and I’m now in some debt to my savings for it 😣🥺. Now, I’m scaling back and leaving items I’m decluttering in a basket for a couple of weeks.
Shoes has been a rough one for me too recently. I live in the Northwest where we get all kinds of weather, often in one day. I really like many of my shoes but just have more than I reasonably wear. So I put half of them in a quarantine bin by first selecting the shoes I’ve worn in the last two weeks. The rest went in a bin to store away and see if I miss them. This is a great tactic to curb shopping because if I feel a gap, I can go shop my storage! Same with other clothing items. I do have a few style moods I cater to so it’s a little interesting to see how my closet is evolving.
Ah! And about fixating on a number of clothing items or hangers… I have a limited closet space to work with so I go based on space! Lately, I’ve had a stuffed closet to the point of not being able to scan the rack and see things, so I’ve had a bin holding overflow 😳. I decided enough was enough and started scaling back two days ago, working on it little by little. Those bins are now quarantine bins before reselling or donating.

I really needed to hear this. I’ve been trying to figure out how many pieces I actually need and in which combinations to have the perfect wardrobe.
