About decluttering things you haven't worn one season, be careful. Life is long. I have things I haven't worn for 5 years, and suddenly they somehow fit the zeitgeist, my lifestyle and needs again and we're good for the next 3-4 years. If you have a good quality garment that you're not wearing right now, but which you love, store it for a while. It's such fun when everyone asks where you got that, and it's your own "vintage" 😜. (This one works if you don't horrifically overshop).

Me too! And boots, bags especially. I'm not into the fast fashion industry at all though get sucked into it as it's more affordable ... Love this though, when purchasing good quality clothing / shoes etc they do tend to last when cared for. I love wearing the same clothes over and over , especially if I like then

      Completely agree.
This is how I live except once! I passed on a selection of outfits I felt I no longer needed. Sadly all but a couple of those pieces I've really wanted again. Particularly right now.
I try to feel good about the fact someone else is getting to use them. Hopefully.

Just before the pandemic I had my colors analyzed and ID'd my Kibbe body type. During the pandemic I worked on replacing a lot of items that didn't fit my new color palette, Kibbe type, or my 3 style words. I have been working hard this year on reducing and curating my closet, storing off-season clothes out of sight, and expressing gratitude for all I have. The last few months of 2023, I donated my clothing budget to a worthy cause. Next year I plan to continue to donate my unspent, budgeted clothing $$ (which is helping me to not buy, knowing if I buy something it will impact that cause) and will shop my closet to find new ways of combining the great clothes I have.

The snowball! Yes! I bought some high waisted wide-leg jeans (on sale, of course). But then, I “needed” some shorter tops to wear with them. And then I “needed” shoes because …wide-leg. Then I realized it was all ridiculous because I don’t even like the jeans on my short curvy bod. I returned it all.

I’ve been retired for a year and a half now and let me tell you my clothing needs have changed drastically. I think I’ve purged 2/3rds of my wardrobe. I have added a few new pieces that are carefully curated. My clothes are very casual now. I do still have nice leaving the house things but just not as many. Stylish and comfortable are key.

      @cm-nj 6 месяцев назад +5

My problem, too! I only go into the office or see clients a handful of times a month but I find office clothing is what I gravitate towards when shopping. If I need anything at all, it is casual clothing options.

You're so right with new items creating gaps to fill. I impulsively bought a vintage YSL wool cape a few years ago, which led to me buying a black leather bag and a pricey paloma wool scarf to go with it.....and I've yet to wear this outfit I've created in my mind

Thank you for this video. I have been trying to limit the number of clothes I purchase by either setting a monthly budget or restricting the number of items allowed per month. However, I was only successful when I started to implement no-buy months and create wishlists. This year, I managed to have 5 no-buy months, and I'm sooo happy with the results. I'm satisfied with my purchases and haven't needed to declutter anything so far. I purchased 11 fewer items than the previous year and overall spent less on clothes. My goal for the next year is also 6 no-buy months. We got this 💗

Yes we do!! Me too on the no buy months! I may alternate or do like 2 on, 1 off for example. I’m gonna allow myself to be fluid and see how it feels. That’s how I cut out alcohol for example and it worked really well

This content is exactly what I needed right now. You are such an inspiration. This video is jam-packef with practical and priceless guidance! I am recently retired and, honestly, struggling with the differences between my current lifestyle and my fantasy self. It all feeds the conflict and imbalance around what I need, actually use/wear and the scope of wardrobe I imagine I "must have." It's time I follow your lead and begin the work to define, develop and (the hard part) manage a workable plan for the coming year. Thank you, Christina for opening the door!!!!

My style intentions for 2024 are to relax a little about my rules while still keeping my intentions and priorities! For the last 3 or 4 years, I have been working toward the goal of having a well-rounded, quality, functioning for me wardrobe, so that when it was time for the major life transition I was anticipating (and just took the leap on this summer), I wouldn't need to put funds to my wardrobe unless my size or needs changed. This goal, while being hugely effective thus far, has definitely meant I have mostly basics, and very little fun stuff to style. So I'm deciding to relax my intense budgeting and "do I really neeeeeeeeed it" mindset a little, and if it's a fun item I know I'll wear and is affordable to me, I'll let myself buy it! (This is also just a life mindset I'm trying to change -- I have a really hard time spending money on myself, and it's starting to be an issue in my life.) Most of what has come from this so far is silly earrings and hats, and I've been embracing it. My other goal is to replace my dying items with new, quality equivalents. My daily boots have finally given out, and it's time to spend the money to replace them well.

I'm adding a "Pause & Applause" tab to my wardrobe tracker. I plan track items I've paused on buying, noting the price and my feelings about the pause. Goal to see how quickly it adds up $ and identify trends in my reflections. Also aim to note what I have already in my closet as a gentle reminder to use what I have more. Creating more mindfulness and in turn low buying for 2024.

I want to style over shop. I have started shopping my closet in last few months but was encouraged to hear it was a muscle and that I can get better at being creative with it. I still have pieces that I haven’t tried to style much. Just once or twice then I let them sit. I will try again!!!

I like your practical advice. I shamed myself with buying a very expensive makeup brush set and eye palette in December that has turned me off from buying anything else for a little bit. I really have a casual lifestyle and my needs are low, but my desire is high! I wear makeup everyday and try to do my hair, even when I really just walk the dog and cook and clean. Hard to be inspired when my life is so simple. Perhaps I need to build some fancier activities to match my fantasy self So I can wear my more stylish clothes more often. I intend to recognize my true lifestyle better in my purchases this year, reduce the amount of clothing items, eliminate damaged and worn out items and to style my outerwear with more intention as that is what people see. Cleaning off those muddy boots, wearing an accent scarf and hat and lipstick, just to walk the dog, to make me feel good about myself regardless of my super casual lifestyle.

Speaking to point #8: I’ve found that I sometimes get anxious about “losing” wears across my wardrobe when I do capsules, so I started taking a different approach. At the end of every month, I look and see if there are any pieces in my wardrobe (usually newer ones, mathematically) that have a high CPW that I’d like to bring down. I make a little list of them close to where I log my daily outfits, and throughout the month it gently reminds me to give those pieces extra consideration. So I’m still focusing on certain pieces but in a way that’s lower stakes and allows me to feel free to use all the things in my wardrobe.

I successfully finished my low buy January! I bought 3 items and 2 of them, I ordered Dec and just came. I only really bought 1 personalized 2024 calendar and I feel great. i only spent $13.62 for January. I'm a hardcore impulse buyer and it just feels so good to be in control for a change. thank you for the motivation!

I bought a few high quality pieces from a high end consignment store in my neighborhood in 2023. The styles are classic and made of 100% linen, 100% silk, 100% merino wool, etc. I mix and match them with less expensive contemporary items in my wardrobe like a well loved pair of jeans and tennis shoes. My goal in 2024 is to learn how to do basic sewing.

For me personally, I find it easier to not purchase an item online. When I’m in person, my brain doesn’t know if I’ll be able to find it again if I’m unsure if I want it. With online shopping, I usually make myself wait a few months before buying something that isn’t a necessity, because it is usually still going to be available. Then when I check my budget sheet and see I have some extra spending money, I go back to my list of “wants” and see if the things on the list are still something I’m interested in.

One of my intentions is to be more mindful in the style content that I’m consuming. I often will tell myself it’s for “style inspiration”, and then end up with 3 more items on my wishlist. It’s like you said, I’m going to focus more on creators who talk about styling rather than shopping, and see if that helps inspire me to shop my closet more.

I love your videos and there's so many things I can take away from them. Thanks for the inspiration! I actually find myself 1. not impulse buying and 2. waiting with a purchase and thinking about items for 2-4 weeks before buying them. It is not clothes for me, more like lifestyle and home items (wool to knit with, a beautiful tea cup, a butter dish I was looking for for ages). I make sure not to buy bad quality, and what I buy is fair-trade or locally crafted etc. and I really appreciate and like the items (they fit my life, my style, they are useful etc.). However, after some time - be it a month or a year - I realise that I actually didn't need whatever it was that I bought. And even after having been considerate about the purchase, being mindful, patient etc, I find myself noticing that everything is just more _stuff_.
I'll try a no spend Jan-Feb-March (and (probs) a low-spend April-May-June) for the first time and already have high hopes for it. Because after all I feel like I am being enticed to purchase by social media and advertisement and beautiful displays, and it doesn't really matter how mindful I am DURING the purchase, in the end it is just another thing - albeit pretty, useful, appreciated.

    • @Christinamychas
      @Christinamychas  6 месяцев назад +11

Very true! The cycle of novelty seeking and then it wears off. But I think you said the key that the items are still appreciated! If they’re not, we can consider decluttering. Things def take up energy before, during, and after

I tried to do a no buy year this year and failed. I work in a shoe store so by March I ended up buying shoes. Then I "needed" new underwear and bras and it just went from there. I am going to hit the reset button and try again. I volunteer on my days off at a thrift shop and I will fill the gaps in my closet from there, but I really have no gaps. I wear black to work so when my work clothes look shabby I can dye them black again to freshen them up. I do this already and my pants are in their 3rd year of service. My only purchases will be to replace used cosmetics but I will not allow myself to purchase "new" items to add to my collection. I have been culling my makeup to remove unnecessary items like primers, serums and eyeshadow pallets. I buy individual eyeshadow sticks now. My splurges will be services like a massage or pedicure where I take my own nail polish to use

My rule is only one package in the mail at a time. Basically if I have an order pending or shipped I can't buy a new thing. I also have three kids to shop for so this rule really slows down online shopping. Especially when I'm shopping handmade items on ETSY lol. This also encourages me to have to shop in person and thrift where I can. The only exception to this rule is holiday shopping or school clothes shopping for my kids because of tax free times.

Wow! Love this video! 😍 love all the intentional and mindfulness in your styling process and all the great tips! Definitely would love to do the 10x10 challenges with you as I’m in a similar space of Decluttering and revamping my wardrobe by first using what I have ❤

Thanks for the commonsense use of our own wardrobes
We are often in a hurry not to miss out on a bargain, only to find something we like a lot better down the track!
New ideas on styling our things and just sticking to things we like - repeat wearing is great

The big thing for me is finding an organization method that can help me keep track of my inspiration. My stuff is a bit all over, but I do have a fairly good set up started on Pinterest. I just need to get my screen shots integrated there instead of in my photos. Thanks for your description of this… maybe I can finally get it together. I’m very visual too… and I love the inspiration on Pinterest. I have no problem translating these ideas using the stuff I have. It’s a nice little moment of creativity. And I have no 💰 for anything new lol

Thank you for this video. I've been trying to cut down on clothes as well. I noticed a spending habit creeping in, especially with the need to return to the office after three years of remote work. I'm kicking off the new year with a No Buy January to reset my spending habits, appreciate what I have, and work towards my financial goals.

I only shop in person and always try to thrift first. Honestly, I can count the number of items purchased new vs thrifted on one hand over the last 5 years (other than undergarments).
I did a no-buy 2020 & 2021 and a low-buy 2022 & 2023. I am considering making 2024 a no-buy years (except necessities). It is really easy for things to creep into our lives that I find strict adherence to a set of rules helps me stay true to my values best....

Yes! I have been thrifting in person this year more. Because I have been disappointed one too many times when ordering online. Also sticking to my wish list, helps so much with buying less.

I am joining you for no buy months. I already know that January and February are going to be my no buy months. I love the idea of shopping in person, re-evaluate every time I think of buying something…..is this item for currant lifestyle or my fantasy self. I donated a lot of clothes that is not practical for my lifestyle anymore. My goal is to donate more in 2024 to curate my closet using your strategies. Thank you so much for this video.

I enjoyed your video in 24. I’m planning on making my wardrobe, more easy or simple, knowing my lifestyle dressing according to my lifestyle when the things that already in my closet, installing them up in that following the trend really enjoyed the clothes that I purchased for 23 and 22 when I purchased them really enjoyed those styling them upchanging my hairstyle make up and saving my money for other things like vacation or getting out of debt, so I really enjoyed your video. Keep on coming.

All in for no-buy January, and likely a low-buy 2024. Completely unhinged in 2023.
Also, shopping in person is important for me, too. I love secondhand/deals on Poshmark, but it's so disappointing when a Poshmark purchase doesn't work out. Can't return it, it goes in a pile because a future version of you is going to somehow make it work. So many of my clothes are Poshmark near-misses!

I can't say enough how WONDERFUL and INSIGHTFUL this video is! I think a big big big one for me is CURATION. You posted on your IG stories the other day that you want to have a closest akin to the "Inside the Wardrobe" series by Vogue. I always go back to those videos too!! The truth is, if we don't slow down... we can't truly hone and curate what we own, what we like, and ultimately who we reveal we are through our wardrobe choices.
