While watching this video, a package was delivered with a beautiful new pleated skirt I purchased on sale. Of course I stopped watching to try it on. It is okay but just okay. I literally said out loud, “If it’s not a Hell YES, it’s a no”. Back it goes. This is a big one for me. Thanks for reminding me not to settle for just okay.

On my don’t buy list: neutrals, flat/thin shoes, denim, button-front shirts, and synthetic fabrics. I live in bright colors, funky patterns, chunky shoes, and statement jewelry. One day, as an experiment, I wore all solid neutral colors to work, and every person I saw asked me if I was feeling okay. So yeah, I’d agree that the lists are very individual.

I agree! I'm often surprised at the cheap looking/feeling fabric some designer brands are using for their clothes. I would rather choose to buy a garment second hand from a hight street brand from good fabric than a new designer piece made out of polyester.

Hi Christina. DEFINITELY do a part 2! This topic made me really think! While my list does overlap with yours, chunky shoes, majority synthetic fabs, florals and geometric, I will never give up my stripes, lol. What I did realize were two things I’m drawn to “ imaginary self” but never wear due to my “ retired” lifestyle. I will no longer buy silk blouses, too hot where I live and too dressy for everyday life now ( will keep most of what I have) and “ dressy” dresses! Casual cotton dresses yes, but no place other than church to wear the others! AND I am so guilty of buying for vacation! NO MORE! Thank you for giving me something to really think about and undoubtedly saving me money!!!!

I love going backwards from what you DON'T want. I wish the shopping sites would let us do that. I don't wear black. So when I shop online it would be so much easier if I could filter out black and the other colors I don't wear, and then see what's left. As a long-time dog and cat mom (and former horse mom) white pants have been a NO for decades, as have light colored bottoms of any kind. I also don't wear much for prints, and no big slouchy clothes - I am petite and they just don't fit my words or style vibe, although I love how they look on others. It makes shopping so much easier to know what your "no's" are.

I'm so happy you mentioned Oxford shirts as a "no place" item. Yes, many love them and for good reason, but any button-down shirt looks terrible on me. Then I discovered that I have scoliosis (curvature of the lower spine). While it is not really noticeable, it does make a button-down shirt twist during the day. So, no more of those. Also, I'm not comfortable in jeans. It's so nice to watch fashion vloggers and say, "nope not for me."

Great video! I recently had a revelation. Until now I didn't realize there was a difference between minimal style and minimalism. I knew I wasn't a minimalist, I have a 4 season wardrobe and a full closet. So I figured that my style couldn't be minimal either. However, I haven't known my style type and thought maybe I was classic but don't fit perfectly in that category. Then I saw a video describing the style types, and I think I'm more minimal than I knew. Since minimal has been one of your 3 words, could you do a video on this for clarification?

Agree! I’m a minimalist wanna be and working toward that but my three words: classic, quirky ( directly opposite classic but it helped my classic not be boring or too old looking and easy ( easy replaced minimal and casual for me; easy to wear, easy to clean, easy to mix and match and easy to look put together quickly. And easy to pack. Not to be confused with the other “easy “ if you know what I mean, lol.

Just because something is real leather or something is on sale or something might be worth a lot per resale comps, does not mean I need to spend money on it. Cycles and habits are hard to break so thank you for posting videos that helps us all to realize A - we're not the only ones and B - you can start a new and healthier chapter....

I don't want to look frumpy therefore I have refreshed my wardrobe style with classic and tailored clothing along with some casual pieces that I wear when I am with my grandsons. I no longer buy synthetic clothing except if it is minimally included in the fabric content and I absolutely love the piece. Living in the warm/hot climate of Scottsdale, Arizona, I tend to buy light colors, so I no longer buy black tops and bottoms. I no longer buy midrise pants. Super interesting for me to watch, especially since as you touched on in the beginning, I have a very different personal style than you! So it was a fun exercise for me to think about what my list would be. Honestly, blazers are probably the first thing I can think of 😂 I’m petite and slim with curves, so anything oversized or boxy just drowns me and I don’t feel confident in it at all. I have been paying more attention to fabric quality and composition as well too though - I got burned buying what should have been a beautiful and flattering dress online, but since it was basically 100% polyester it was horrendous. It was a real aha moment for me - like wow, this dress could have been great if it were mostly cotton or linen….

I can more easily identify styles that don’t work for me vs individual items. For me, I can’t pull off: preppy, twee, retro, baggy/androgynous, polka dots, tons of accessories, anything meant for a lean, athletic body type, anything cutesy or super trendy, pastels
Dislikes: cap sleeves, 3/4 sleeves, capris, graphic tees that reflect the time period eg moustaches, foxes, owls, keep calm and carry on, rompers, jumpsuits, most cropped tees
Things that never worked out for me: denim jackets 😢, most shorts (I just reach for skirts when it’s warm enough), cream coloured items (wash me out)

Buying stop-list is a thing. I discovered so many cases when I was decluttering, just little things like the wrong collar shape, color tone, materials, etc. Item can be absolutely nice, but THIS ONE thing ruining all and it just hanging in wardrobe forever never worn. 😬 So now i know at least - no light colors, no warm tones, no tight collars, no for synthetic, no jeans (hard fabrics on the skin ugh), no for knee-lenght skirts! *No polyester, acrylic, or nylon tops...fellow sweaty gal living in a humid environment.
*Trench coats. Love them, but got rid of them bc not practical for my climate.
*Color blocking. I'd rather wear prints than random chunks of multiple colors.
*boatnecks, fit & flare, and high rise (unless they are wide legged): so unflattering on me.
*pastels, anything too girly/feminine: ridiculous on me
*skinny jeans: that era is over for me.

I’m with you on synthetics, I appreciate natural fibers. The drape is much nicer. I am an hourglass and frills add volume to my body that I don’t need. I love button downs! Bodysuits are a no way item, I find them uncomfortable. I love dresses for summer. I’m not a big shorts person, but I love skirts and hiking skorts for summer. I love the idea of heels, but end up wearing flat sandals, sneakers, ballet flats and loafers for summer; boots and booties for winter. I only wear heels for special occasions. I finally purged all heels except for a nude pair and a black pair. The black pair will be next to go.

At the end of 2023 I made a list of things I didn't want to buy in general in 2024 because I already had too many of them. The only wardrobe item on that list was boots. And it's made me realize that while I love the look of boots, I generally don't wear them! Living in the north east US, I do need to have a couple of pair, but for me otherwise, it's kind of a waste of money. I also limit myself on the number of black items I have since I have pets and I hate picking hair off them and it really isn't great on me either. I also don't own a lot of dresses and skirts (2 of each) because I only need them for certain situations. I agree with you 100% on synthetics. And I hear you on the Oxford button downs. I finally donated all of what I had except for my denim style one because it kind of works for a jacket in a pinch too. I've never understood buying new clothes for vacation, I just want to be me and comfortable. Great video! (and sorry for the novel LOL)

Christina, I love what you no longer buy actually! Ditsy floral shirts, Breton tops, Oxford button downs (especially striped ones) and buying new clothes for a vacation (it adds to the anticipation of planning my outfits and finally wearing them I guess). As for beige and camel pants, yes I wear them too but I can't wear this colour as a coat or trench, it just looks really pasty and wrong on me, maybe because I'm cool toned. I really dislike round scoop neck t-shirts and tanks too, they feel so blah. I am digging high neck ones, especially in black though. Oh, btw, that silver jewellery made you glow when you held it up next to your face.

I used to love loud patterns, but buy fewer nowadays. I don’t believe in rules about what we ‘should’ wear as we age, I just lost my enthusiasm for bold prints. Though I do still love a polka dot. No more Bretons for me either. I like striped tops, but avoid white stripes as they wash me out. Though they look great on other people. My big ‘no no’ is denim. I was a teenage punk and denim felt wrong back then, so I gradually eradicated it from my wardrobe. Apart from a brief foray into Marilyn Monroe-style pedal pushers, I haven’t worn anything denim since I was 17 and I’m now 60! I never felt comfortable in it, it felt stiff. It didn’t suit me. Again, other people look great in it. And no frills for me either -still
a bit punk at heart 😄

You are so smart. No wonder you have so many followers. We have very similar, if not the same coloring, so pastels and unsaturated colors are out for me too. I kept buying pale pink because it's so pretty but I always looked blah when I put it on. No more. I also employ the if's not a WOW it's a NO principle when I shop or thrift. My most recent addition to my don't buy any more of is "black summer dresses". Somehow I have 3 and that's plenty for me.

Great video 🫶🏻 My no buy list also has no synthetic fibers (some is fine, but not the majority), no crop tops, nothing outside my colour palette, nothing beige or brown, no patterns, nothing oversized (a relaxed fit is the most ‚oversize‘ I can go), for tops I ether have to wear it with a simple nude t-shirt bra or it has to fit without one, if I have to wear any other bra with it, like strapless or backless, I know I will not wear it 🫠 those are all things I will declutter eventually anyway 😁

I really lke this subject and listing. I totally agree with number 1. I am really into natural materials and aim to buyng them. I love stripes in my summer cotton knits and shirts as well. My favorite are dresses with big or small flowers. I really do not buy a complete vacation outfit. Maybe just lke you said I would bux an item that is missing. Something I also cannot handle are very big bulky shoes but for me also very wide pants. Super high heals are off my list of what to wear nowadays. My back is in such bad shape for a short party maybe but max. 7-8cm reald. Prefarably not thin stiletto type heals so even kitten heals are not possible for me. Something I do not wesr are body suits. My back is long and legs and arms short. That means it is too difficult to open and close. I really csnnot reach diown with my arms. In general I would buy classic items and colors suitable for many occasions. I would buy white/beige/khaki colored pants even gray. Thiose all seem versatile to me but we should buy what suits us and our bodies the best! No sense in buing something just to fill up the closet and keep it there.

I also love a button up but never wear them. Same with blazers and loafers. My life is just too casual for a blazer and I've bought several pairs of loafers but always pick ballet flats instead. Seven agrees out of twelve - I guess that's why I keep coming back. 😉I would also include: Fantasy life clothes, anything I can't wear a bra with, dry clean only clothes, anything uncomfortable or impractical like jumpsuits, costume jewellery, cheap shoes, status designer bags...I'd better stop.

This has caused me to write down the list that until now has been in my head! I do use your “hell yeah” guide a lot.
Acrylic or cotton jumpers - stick with wool etc. (small amount in blend okay)
Leather jacket - I love the rock chick look but it is so not me
Jeans that are not 100 cotton
Any trousers that sit well below my natural waist
Bags and shoes that are not leather (check the shoe lining!)
Mini skirts and dresses and almost all shorts
Colours that don’t suit me: purple, royal/electric blue, most yellows, beige, pastel pink, pastel peach, etc.
Elastic waist skirts and trousers - not chic and have to be hidden by a belt and then I have to find the right belt
Anything new I can buy secondhand
Anything secondhand that I wouldn’t be tempted to pay full/new price for
Sewing projects - I can sew but have sworn to be cautious about creating a to-do pile - taking up hems and sleeves, and changing buttons are quick fixes so okay
