Wish you could come and help me, I live in Sweden so thats impossible, but I really admire you and your method, and you have such an amazing personality! I will try to do all this by myself this weekend!
@@susannem3526 If you are from Sweden, I know a really tough decluttering expert in Stockholm. Her name is Benita Larsson, you can find her on youtube (maybe you already know her). And guess what, I think she starts a new series/process on helping people in/with their homes. Go check her out, you can find that described in one of her last videos. You can sign in on a waitlist, and when she has free capacity, you can book her, if you like.
I like the approach that you CAN keep sentimental items. Too much of minimalism disregards our emotional connection with objects, which is absolutely NOT a bad thing if there’s balance. Also Ivanka looks like a young Celine!
Because Marie Kondo doesn't preach minimalism. She preach about being organized in small space which lots of people nowadays are struggling with because new housing are getting smaller and smaller. She teaches us that we need to let go excess stuff that we NO LONGER NEED and USELESS. That's it. Not about strictly keeping 10 items of clothes or throwing away our much beloved collection be it bags, books, etc. And that's what i love about her. Sorry for the long comment but I'm just tired of watching those certified organizers/mininalist advocates on YT that keep telling those people that they helped to throw away lots of stuff that they obviously love and have sentimental value simply because 'you don't really need it. You just need the memory'. In a way, it's true and it's fine if the person decluttering it made up their mind so fast to let it go but to see them struggling is heartbreaking to watch. Again, sorry for the long comment but i just need to let it out 😅😅
I’ve done konmari for years since reading the book as a teenager and honestly the most significant tip that’s stayed with me is saying goodbye and thanking the item for its service to you. Even if it was a bag I never ever used not even once, letting it go is easy because I have said thank you to it for being in my life for however long. And looking around my house only seeing things that spark joy, it’s uniquely wonderful. People can always tell I love my space because I take care of all my things. A question. People always wonder about is how do you find mundane items that spark joy? For example kitchen scissors. Seems like a necessary item that you have whether it sparks joy or not. The thing is, why don’t you like it? Or find one you like to replace the thing that’s just ‘meh’. Everything can be joyful
@@esikazemese I feel bad for doing that now though, and it’s mentioned in Konmari’s book- that while passing it on to someone else might take the ‘pressure’ off you, it just passes it on to someone else. What my friends and I do instead is assemble everything we want to give away and we have a little trade night where we swap items. Anything that doesn’t get picked up gets donated. It’s good fun and feels like shopping hehe
For necessary items, noticing the possibility of an upgrade helps. Scissors are a great example. Where I work, there are many inexpensive blue scissors. They wear out quickly. I like orange scissors because they’re balanced better and I can buy a small sharpener to resharpen them myself. For kitchen utility scissors, there are many inexpensive ones out there that are OK. I bought some expensive ones that can be taken apart for cleaning. They are strong enough to cut a penny, better balanced and can be returned to the manufacturer for sharpening. Holding them, it’s immediately obvious they’re an upgrade. I use these items every day, so having an improved version enhances my life.
MK is an absolute deity in my eyes. I used her method 5 years ago and it really IS life changing. She says that the rational mind is what holds us back and her intuitive approach is so much more accessible than conventional minimalism - which tends to be cold and overly logical. I’m so happy you found an actual EXPERT in the method to do this with. I’d grown so frustrated from seeing her work misrepresented online by people who’ve barely read her book. My sister is a maximalist, I’m a minimalist, we both LOVE her method ❤️
Yes! Ivanka mentioned while we were filming that Marie Kondo’s method is often mistaken for a minimalist one, and it isn’t! She pointed out that it’s a common misconception. It’s for maximalists and minimalists alike! You’re right!
As a fellow Certified Master KonMari Consultant, I'm so happy to see this collaboration and longtime friendship Christina and Ivanka! Lots of joy after a declutter and reset!
I’m listening as I’m going through my closet. Thanks for the tips. The one tip I’d add is “find a great donation cause.” This way I can say “I don’t feel great in this dress, but I know X Agency will find a needing woman who will just rock an interview in this outfit.”
Oh WOW, I remember your closet when it was overflowing and overwhelming. It’s such a breathable space now, and I’m motivated to have a closet where everything I pull out is something that sparks joy. The money spent is still a hang up for me. More Ivanka on your Chanel please, I love her demeanour. A podcast with the two of you? ABSOLUTELY!!
This was so helpful. First of all I instantly decluttered 5 more pieces, because I "wouldn't fight Ivanka over them" :). And the TV appearance idea made me realize what my favorite style actually is, that was an incredible moment, like BOOM, that's the look I really like on myself.
I want to do this but I feel like I need to wait until after we’re out of lockdowns. The answer to “have you worn this in the last year?” is gonna be “well…no” right now. I also wear scrubs to work 3 days a week now so it’s important to see what I actually wear the other four days of the week.
What i loved so much about this exercise, is how clearly it shows that if something isn't a clear and definite yes, it's a no. and that applies to so much more than clothes in life. this is what i learned not only from KonMari, but also Essentialism.
Such a rewarding feeling having that done! Not to mention sometimes having the extra set of eyes to help with a task like that can really keep you honest and help in decluttering. Love it Christina! 😃
I've read the Konmari books and have seen countless decluttering videos but this was still very helpful to watch. I never took my clothes off the hanger and would leave some items partially folded too! Oops 😬 I'm moving and have to pack my clothes and this inspired me to retackle decluttering my closet again.
I LOVED seeing someone who's already a minimalist do another declutter. It's an ongoing process! I'm currently in the middle of another big purge, even after practicing minimalism the last few years, so this was particularly relatable and refreshing.
That truth bomb at 4:00 is so important for everyone to hear. And I constantly have to remind myself of that. While I shop I get so caught up in the moment with how ppl will perceive me that ill buy smaller sizes or different styles of clothing I may not feel comfortable in but what I feel will appease others or my fantasy self. This video was very helpful.
Great video. That t-shirt folding technique! Love it! Glad she isn't pressuring you to get rid of your mom's jeans. I see de-cluttering advice all the time that makes people feel like they have to get rid of irreplaceable sentimental/family items. Tragic. Not saying you have to keep it all -- but also you do not have to always get rid of everything, either.
CHRISTINA! Thank you so much for this video and for inviting Ivanka. I am watching it while staring a the pile of things I've still got to declutter. Been trying to do so all day. I still find that I'm thinking about the ideal self but I'm getting there. Appreciate all of the helpful and comforting videos! 💕💕🦋
This is a really considerate, gentle video on decluttering. Thank you. I vacuum pack the item in my "maybe" pile that I'm really struggling to decide whether or not to keep. That gets them out of my wardrobe and drawers, and makes everyday dressing and laundry much easier. But I find it reassuring to know my clothes are still there should I need them one day. After a period of time has past, I find it much easier, (and much less emotional) to decide what to do with them.
Thank you so much for walking us through the process. I’ve done the KonMari process several time myself. But I still learned a lot here. Great time to review my closet as we shift to cold weather items.
After watching your video. I spent the morning decluttering all my clothes that I’ve been keeping for so long. I took a pic and couldn’t believe what I was hanging onto. I was very proud of myself, and it was a very freeing experience. I was keeping all that stuff for all the wrong reasons. Your video and Ivanka advice really helped to put it all in perspective. Thanks 🥰 On to round 2!🏋🏻♀️
hi, this has been the most enjoyable of the decluttering videos i have watched over the past week, while doing the 30 day challenge. all of them have been just one person, i think that the vibe the two of you had made it feel like not such a lonesome task, and can be fun
Loooove Ivanka’s energy. You two would make a great podcasting duo! I read Marie Kondo’s book a few years ago and it changed my life. I thought thanking the clothes sounded totally woo-woo, but I gave it a whirl. The process helped me release a ton of guilt and weird emotions tied to certain pieces I was holding onto like gifts from my mom, nostalgic t-shirts, and vintage finds. It was such a joyful and liberating experience. I definitely cried a few times ha. Ps. Thanks Ivanka for the KonMari folding hack!
I loved this one! You did so well. It definitely helps having someone there who makes you accountable to yourself about the decisions. Would love to see another collaboration also- you had good repartee! Enjoy your new streamlined wardrobe 🤩
