    Hello!! :) I'll love to know YOUR TIPS and tricks on things you check before you buy. Let me know in the comments below!

  • @BubblyViolin11

    Loved your point on timeless with a twist. I don’t look good in super basic pieces (the one exception being a white button down), and I’ve noticed that when I find basic pieces with a twist or an ‘elevated basic’, it suits me more. I used to think that basic pieces were great for everyone, but they make me look plain despite looking beautiful on others.

  • @carak4356

    I liked the idea about 3 different looks per item. That was new to me. I grew up making my own clothes, my mom taught us to sew so I’ve always noted fabrics and thought about tailoring and longevity when I started buying RTW. I loved how you included those values. X

  • @annatsinoudi

    I liked the point that every material has a purpose, some material are more suited for tops others for bottoms others gor outerwear! It's a great point to consider!

    @emmy8526 2 года назад +13

    🧡 One thing I’ve been doing on my wish list lately is adding the number of times I expect to wear the item over its appropriate season. It’s clarifying as to future price per wear and usefulness. Helps me reduce the 'cool collectible design' that isn’t actually super practical over time (and I already have plenty of those items).

  • @emmacurrens1617
    @emmacurrens1617 2 года назад +9

    I love how analytical this is! I take a similar approach each season when added a few new items to my wardrobe. I keep a google document of photos or screen grabs of my wardrobe for that season and add the potential pieces into the visual collection. I'll think on it a few days before making the purchase!

    I like modern classics, the “twist” often dates the item quickly. Those sweaters and sweatshirts with ruffles on the shoulders, for example, already look outdated, and are still for sale in places.

    • @DailyHelenJ
      @DailyHelenJ  2 года назад +31

      A very very good point! I think for me, ruffles tend to be almost 'timeless' in that they have their moments in style. But I wear them regardless. Definitely something to keep in mind as to whether something will date quickly and whether we'll still wear it once it dates :)

    • @sudakshinaghosh9997
      @sudakshinaghosh9997 2 года назад +29

      @@DailyHelenJ that is exactly it! In talking about twists, its all about what the twist is, and whether YOU will love and wear it regardless of whether its in or out of trend! That requires a lot of learning and understanding your own personal style! Loved the video!

    • @AshleySpace1111
      @AshleySpace1111 2 года назад

      It depends on the “twist”, for example the shirt with button to the side is cool, but ruffles on sleeve is not something I’d go to.

    I dont order from Shein too, but i cant afford the clothes you buy, and im sure lots of your followers are like me. I buy my clothes from h&m and mango and they last for years. And i dont want to save money to buy 1 peace of expensive clothing and only wear that for months especially if i have to build a new wardrobe. I dont know if its true but i heard that for example some of Sezane's clothes are not good quality, and most of the time i believe ppl pay for the brand name. Sorry for my English im not native english speaker.

    • @DailyHelenJ
      @DailyHelenJ  2 года назад +11

      Hey Bianka :) I think that choosing well is always more important than where we buy from. I actually have lots of things from &otherstories and mango over the years which have lasted me well. But I think Shein is on another level where I’ve seen some terrible things. A 100% valid point you’re making :)

    Will definetly be using these tips for future purchases, thank you! One of the things I look for in the material of an item is whether or not it will shrink when washing in 40 degrees as opposed to 30, since it's almost impossible to get rid of rougher stains if washing in 30 (at least in my opinion). Therefore I often size up when it comes to clothes made of linen and viscose. Polyester is great in this regard since it retains its shape when exposed to heat (as you mentioned with the pleated skirt). However, I also do prefer linen, cotton and viscose but it's much harder to make purchase these clothes in my opinion when taking washing into consideration..

    • @DailyHelenJ
      @DailyHelenJ  2 года назад +5

      Absolutely! How a material washes is sooo important. I tend to do 30degrees and just use a stain remover but clothes that don't wash well is just the worst. I do often err on side of caution and handwash when I get the feeling something is not going to retain the shape but obviously that's a pain. Thank you so much for sharing this and watching xx

    You spoil us with your tips and tricks! LOVED this vid (and your nails). I personally relate to clashing duplicates, but have curbed that impulse after you had casually flagged that in another video. One thing I've also been practicing is to ask myself "where and when do I realistically see myself wearing this?". When I see something that appeals to my aesthetic my eyes light up and I want to own it/feel confident I'll be able to pull it off...but the scenarios in my head may not be centered around my daily lifestyle for instance - almost like a fantasy of what I'd picture myself wearing. That marks the difference for me between wanting to own it vs needing it, which leaves me admiring the item without purchasing it.

    No one can afford clothes that are so cheap that we never wear them, like the viscose skirts in my comment. That was about $120-150 US wasted, I could have got a silk top that I would live in for that. I’ve been frittering away to much money on cheap items during the pandemic, if I saved and planned better, I could have fewer things, but ones I love.

    I don’t like synthetics, but a pleated polyester midi skirt is the exception. Even Ralph Lauren’s are polyester. If it’s not too hot, and the skirt is light and floaty enough, they’re wearable. It’s my trunk that overheats, not my limbs so much. I was so excited to order two viscose, not polyester, slip skirts from H&M, at least they were breathable. They are virtually impossible to iron, even following the instruction of ironing while wet, and after hanging dry thoroughly, they look all puckered and wrinkled again. I’m going to declutter them, sadly, I did my very best but they’re not wearable according to my standards. I hope they try again in a better, more eco-friendly, viscose-type fabric. (I noticed that they weren’t offered again, buyers were unhappy.)

    • @DailyHelenJ
      @DailyHelenJ  2 года назад

      We definitely share this in common! :) Occasionally, something in outerwear/ a pleated skirt, I can tolerate. But in a top/ or dress for me is where it becomes a major no.

    • @melocoton7
      @melocoton7 2 года назад

      Completely agree. If the item requires a synthetic component to do what it needs to do, then it makes sense. Pants and skirts I don’t mind that much, but anything on top in close contact with my skin, I need breathable natural fabrics. I feel almost claustrophobic in sweaty polyester on top.

    I have LOTS of items from fast fashion that are SYNTHETIC and lasted years, and are still my current favourites! Some are even 10 years old and are still very wearable! Being sustainable doesn't mean only buying "high quality natural fabrics", that is very elitist and out of touch. 👎

    • @ericachow5275
      @ericachow5275 2 года назад +5

      I think the point is so that if someone IS able to afford or save up for the natural fibers, then they should try to go for those. There are heavy environmental impacts of synthetic fabrics in production and in the disposal but obvs it's not really the fault of the consumer if that's what is affordable for them.

    • @DailyHelenJ
      @DailyHelenJ  2 года назад +2

      I think the reason I spoke about finding the right fabrics for your lifestyle, and not recommending specific fabrics like linen, is taking into account that synthetics DO have benefits. They are not what I prefer sure, but they do have benefits as you say. Totally understandable and fair to say synthetics work better for you.

      @@jlopez6455 "who is more sustainable, someone who does once a year or someone who does all the time??" doesn't prove anything. i agree that it doesn't matter if your clothes are all natural fibers, if you buy in excess, but there's nothing wrong with the message itself, unless you find that for some reason the synthetic clothing you have is much more durable. otherwise it just seems like you came here to tell us you're a better and more sustainable person than Lumiere, which.. good for you I guess.
