When I’m at a shop wanting to buy something totally unplanned, I always remind myself that yesterday I was perfectly happy without it in my life. It really helps me to remember that I can appreciate something I love without having to own it 😅
I like that, I’ll try to think like that in future. I usually walk away, think about it for a week, i.e. where would I put it, do I really want it, would I still like it in a year, would I need to get rid of anything to accommodate it.
I’m 74 and I have 2 pairs of shoes winter and summer also I have very little clothing . I have just what I need and I know the difference between need and wants it took me along time to get to this point..❤️
Girl I respect you…. You are doing great…. I am working on getting there myself….just splurge and get a couple pairs of shoes for each season… I know once you get that capsule wardrobe it’s hard but we need the extra support at our age and shoes wear so quickly in the support…. Happy feet… happy life… great job and you are my inspiration I can get there… thanks for sharing 😊
When I go on holidays, I often buy a ‘useful’ thing in the local shop as a memory, like a kitchen towel, a bar of soap, a dish cloth… things I do use in my daily life. Every time I use them, they give me fond memories of my trip to the Provence, Italy, Denmark…
I stopped buying nail polish, multiple skin care products, too much junk jewellery and too many clothes and it has made me feel peaceful and happier. Its better for the environment, requires less cleaning and organizing time and helps me prioritize other things I enjoy :)
I stopped reading magazines, music. My biggest weakness are dollar type stores and i love five below. I haven't bought anything from Amazon in a long time which Iam very proud of. I also make it a very strict rule not to shop for food when I am hungry.
This is a very useful list. When we travel I purhase a pair of earrings that catch my eye. They don't take up storage room and every time I wear them pleasant memories of the trip come to mind.
Same here handcrafted earrings or refrigerator magnets. Especially since we do the minimal packing challenge and take only 1 carry on..so no room for souvenirs!
@@SimpleHappyZen i 101% agree with your lists in this video, i collect soo much things , thinking that i will use them later, but it just always gets compiled and never touch it again...... thank you for your lists and these videos, very very helpful.
I have earrings, bracelets and jewellery in my collection that I no longer wear. But I have a sentimental attachment to them. I keep oscillating between the urge to keep them or to give them away
Big hug to a kindred spirit. I am 64 and have lived the minimal hygge life always. The peaceful quiet nature filled life is a joy and a comfort to me in a noisy chaotic world! I can feel your peace. Hugs!
Very well said. I totally agree with you especially as I get older. I really value my quiet time, solitude and peacefulness. When I see others stressing over all the "distracting, nonesential stuff" in life, I feel blessed to be able to go to that peaceful, quiet place inside myself where I feel closer to God and more in tune with nature. ❤
Minimalism is fine but there is nothing like a nice old fashioned home with carpets and character and a book library and color and culture . I do follow for the ideas so I can really help myself consume less but I feel that everyone should keep their personality . Our houses don’t have to look white and grey to be minimal and sustainable. From whatever background you come you can adjust with your personal taste 😊
@@mollypolly2979all depends on one's personal taste. I enjoy have things around that I've made, photos my brothers have taken, pot & pans that I inherited. I'll declutter to fit my personality which may look too cluttered for someone else 😊 do what works for you.
I use a minimum of perishable items to "decorate" my home for the season or a holiday...Flowers and foliage, pumpkins and other squash, pine cones, apples, you get the idea. They are used-up or decompose and do not require storage. I do keep candles both flame and flameless on hand all year.
Me too! Although I only use flameless candles (regular ones make me sick) and I have a a few precious Christmas items that all fit in the antique trunk in my apartment. It’s fun to go out and forage in nature to decorate for the seasons ❤
That’s what I do as well! I love to make Christmas ornaments and garlands from dried fruit slices and star anise because they look pretty, smell fantastic, and are compostable once the holidays are over.
We stopped buying any Christmas decorations and got rid of most of what we had in storage. I kept a few things (bells to hang on the door knob so they jingle whenever friends visit, and a banner for my front door with a message of peace and joy, and a small copper sculpture of a pine tree made by a local artist) that I really like and are meaningful to me. It has reduced my stress and anxiety around the holidays because I no longer feel obligated to do a tree and drag out all those decorations, then have to put them all away after the holiday.
I did the same thing, after last Christmas I donated 3/4 of our Christmas decor and also our big tree, now that we are retired we decided to get a smaller tree. We donated most ornaments , tree, and decor It will be so easy this coming Christmas to decorate Have been living the minimal lifestyle for 8 years now, it was of the last category to declutter
Yes the Christmas bomb would go off and suddenly there are a ton of things that have to be put out everywhere! I earned my first trip to the chiropractor spending three days bent over when I finally had enough and decluttered most of it. Now Christmas brings actual joy! ❤
@@jeaninekelly4271 my husbands back went out one year putting up the tree, he herniated a disc…. Don’t have to worry about that anymore, we are retired and bought a beautiful table top tree, and it looks just as beautiful without the work of putting it up,
We’ve gotten rid of lots of Christmas stuff. I used to decorate a lot! A few years ago, maybe 2020 or 2021, when we were still dealing with the Covid pandemic, I spent too much time on fb following Christmas pages. I ended up buying Christmas bedding for 3 bedrooms, lots of trees in every room, I bought all kids of other stuff and took down everything from my built in bookcases and replaced with Christmas items. It was nuts! So ever since then, I’ve been getting rid of more and more each year. Even my 13 year old is burned out. The kids had all kinds of Christmas stuff for their rooms and finally decluttered some. My 13 yr old son has a large nutcracker collection and he was going to get rid of it but I won’t let him. I told him he might want it when he grows up and save it until then. I don’t want him to have regrets and he doesn’t have to put it out. So this year I think all I’ll do is a tree and my door wreath which is Rudolph and Clarice. My favorite Christmas movie. Speaking of movies, I think I need to see what else I can declutter in our dvd collection. Almost anything I want to watch is on some streaming service!
For the souvenirs, I see if I can buy something that I already need. A few years ago my oven mitt burned and I needed to get a new one, so when I went on vacation to Finland I bought a new one there, a really cute fun one with Moomins! Now when I use that oven mitt I always think of that relaxed vacation in Finland. 😊
this is the exact way I shop for souvenirs too, love it. Or when traveling domestically in my own country I often shop at thrift stores/secondhand shops and get things that are unique and practical, for example we have new lampshades in our bedroom that are from a thrift store in Green Bay, Wisconsin and I fondly think of that entire trip. Way better than a Green Bay sweatshirt I would wear 2 times and forget.
Your videos are so easy and enjoyable to watch. You truly have a gift of conveying your message calmly and clearly. I am at the other end of the spectrum, being in my late 70's recognizing how freeing and important it is to be more clutter free. I work part-time at a thrift store, so I have made it a practice to walk through my house each week and find items to donate. I downsized a few years ago to a much smaller house which helped me to let go of many unessesary things and life is just more enjoyable, peaceful and simplistic when you don't have to "manage" so much stuff! I appreciate your wisdom and encouragement! You are wise beyond your years! ❤
A Good souvenir is to send yourself some post cards. You can keep them in a small box if you want to look at them and read about what you did on that trip later if you want. Or display them for a little while. Bonus they are cheap and dated for you. I also occasionally get tea towels because I can swap that as my 'decoration' in the kitchen. Libraries are great for books!
I'm working on reducing my buying and decluttering our home after years of depression and building a terrible habit of buying things to help me feel better which it never has. Less visual clutter and a healthy bank account make me feel so much calmer. I think over the years ive had so many obsessions where i've collected stuff, nail polish, beauty products, shoes, bags, clothes, kitchen stuff, tablecloths, candleholders. Recently i was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis and have spent a small fortune trying to find shoes which are comfortable, ive fallen into the same issue so many times. Its hard, but i keep watching your videos to keep me inspired.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts Alison, you're doing a great job making these changes for yourself and for your health and happiness. Keep it up! Sending you a high five
I decluttered my spices and other pantry items that I very rarely used and gave them away to a friend who really appreciated them. I also got rid of all the decorative pillows on our bed, as I was tired of moving it all every night and putting it all back every morning. We have a washer & dryer, so we went down to one set of linens. It can be very freeing 🥰
thanks for all the tips…. from all the 25 things, the one thing i won’t gave up are my physical (paper) books 📚 i love the idea of having my own library as i love reading (retirement plan) and i have a space even now for all my books collection 😊 my personal preference.
I love the Scandi/Mid Century Modern vibe you have in your home. The tip on not buying furniture you cannot vacuum under is huge. It also makes the home look more spacious because the furniture doesn’t feel anchored. Also, new to your channel! 🎉
Thank you for the comment about not enjoying sesonal decor and that you decluttered it all. I feel the same, I always get stressed about christmas decorations and don't enjoy putting them up anymore. I will declutter most of it this christmas and only keep a few.
I can and will not part with my books. Have them tidy and organised on my bookshelf. Most of them will be re-read, then I will probably donate them. You can't beat the feel and the smell of a relatively new book!
I felt tempted to buy baskets and towels when I last went shopping for a shirt. The old self was inspired by the sales and how great the things looked. I only bought the shirt and walked past the rest. I reminded myself I don't need those, and i was thrilled I left them on the shelf.
Lovely to see you, Vera, and hear your calming voice of reason and warmth. I love the idea of no seasonal decorations. That would save a lot!… money, time decorating and putting them away, storage space, visual clutter. Another viewer mentioned using perishable/edible items as decor, and I agree… bowls of fruit and basil/mint plants in the summer. It might be that they serve 2 functions that is so appealing to me. 😊
Lovely as always to “visit” with you Vera ❤ I agree with you on all your ideas, especially Fantasy clutter (identity clutter is another one). It’s taken a LONG time to realize that what appeals to me may not be what complements me, whether in lifestyle or clothing. Recognizing who you are AT THIS MOMENT and making sure your things reflect that is a huge part of peace and joy. I decluttered everything that is not me “now”, knowing that those things can bless someone else, and I have complete and utter peace, freedom, and joy. There are of course things from past seasons of my life that are precious mementos, but they are in 2 file box memory boxes that I can look over anytime.
I've been working on this for about ten years, and do many of the things you do. The biggest thing for me has been to just not go into shops unless I'm out to get something specific from the list I keep. I also think it helps to think about the environmental cost of the things, to reduce the allure. As for home decor and seasonal decor, most of what I use has special meaning to me, mainly things I've inherited from my grandparents. ❤️
I agree with many of your points, but have found #20 especially useful. I have only furniture that I can run my vacuum underneath of. It really helps to keep my apartment clean.
Hi Vera, I really like your gentle approach to your tips / advice content. You show what has worked for you and the reasoning behind it, but aren’t telling everyone to be the same, but suggest ways that concept might apply to others. I think this sets it apart from the other more “clickbait” videos where the creator seems to think that everyone is the same and I feel like I can take away something from each point ❤
Nr. 1 Starts for me with not buying new snacks or foot until we use up the food we have. I find that we throw less food away if doing so. And it gets you creative to create meals out of the food you have in stock. Also I really struggle with not buying books😅 I love to read and love an astatic book shelf. It’s a very emotional thing for me. but as you say, over the time there are so many books to store… Love your videos and the calming vibe very much! Thank you 🤗
Loving the advice here. Do not agree with the advice to avoid decorating with words. Yes, having the words on your walls or around in your decorations can be mentally stimulating. Which is exactly why it is good to decorate with words that evoke positivity if you need positivity. If you are struggling with depression, it can be very helpful to have some positive reminders just scattered around the home. I love my cheap Dollar Tree ceramic coasters because they are very functional when I'm drinking cold beverages and they say motivational things like keep laughing or this home is filled with love. I love the alphabet magnets that I put on the fridge because I can change up the quote as needed and every time I go through the kitchen, my fridge tells me something to lift my mood. I love having a few t-shirts that say something encouraging like if you can't see the sunshine, be the sunshine. If you choose to decorate with words, then it's good to carefully choose the words. To see what they say to you and how they make you feel on first glance. If they make you feel good, and if you need to feel good, then by all means use them!
Thanks so much for the tips. I really enjoy the aesthetic, tone, pace, organization, and mostly the waste mindfulness of your videos. What a pleasure and SO important when materialism contributes to so much corruption, illness and ecocide. Great work!
I use a seasonal or holiday wreath on my external front door to mark occasions. It amounts to 4 to 6 versions, or a single wreath can be redecorated if that's your jam. Otherwise, a couple to switch out still doesn't take much storage. And I get to enjoy it each time I come home and still keep my living space serene.
I used to have a lot of seasonal and holiday decor. I got rid of 90% of it and now really only have Christmas decor that I've also pared way down to only my absolute favorites. So much easier to put up and take down now that there's less of it. I also practice a "one in = one out" rule the best I can. Your videos are a nice reminder and always a welcome moment of relaxation and reflection. Thank you!
When it comes to souvenirs, I like to do something creative to remember it. When I went to Paris I brought with me a paint-by-number (having no real talent myself) of a girl looking at the Eiffel Tower to paint there. In Belgium, I found a little fabric shop where I bought some lace and leather that I later sewed an outfit out of. After London, I drew/water-colored a simple picture of the city.
We have started looking for handmade Christmas ornaments from places we visit. I love handmade ornaments and it reminds us of the trip. I met a lady who collects earrings. There are plenty of things you can get elsewhere as souvenirs and you can use and enjoy. To each his own and I agree with your approach, I try to buy something I will use, or replace something I own that the new item is an improvement. This helps check and balance and requires much self( and spousal ) control.
Thank you for this video, I admire people like you able to think structured and keep their homes clutter free, I try to do this also but realise that I am hanging too much on things having ideal value for me
Your solution to stationary clutter is awesome. I have a stationary habit that I am trying to curb. Seeing that there is a person in this world who only has one stash is very inspiring.
Thank you for this information. I need to declutter soooo bad. It is overwhelming to have so much clutter. 2 quotes I have to share. "At its heart, clutter is a lack of peace." "Throw it out. You'll never remember it."
Pleaseeee make a video for craft enthusiasts, some of us have a number of hobbies and we need to keep everything accessible, just in case we get some inspiration
I went into the video with a thought "what can such a video teach me". But these things are so beautiful in that they are so obvious and logical. I struggle with extra devices with too many parts and cleaning products under the sink. And of course each time I am in a book store I need to slap my own hand not to buy a beautiful notebook, which I know I won't use. Thank you for collecting these into one big obvious collection, which I will think of each time i have a temptation of buying some unnecessary stuff again!
It's funny with me as an HSP I'm also very minimalist in every room in the house EXCEPT the game room, which I have lots of anime figures, plushies, manga etc lol. (I do keep even this room very well organized & "neat" though.)
New at this. I have watched several of your videos and they have inspired me so much. One thing I refuse to buy is more lotions. I love Bath and Bodyworks lotions. I currently have at least 4. I recently made the decision to miss their huge sale. I'm not buying any more until I use up what I have. Then I'd like to keep it at just my favorite. Lastly I want to tell you your shirt/blouse is beautiful. I like it a lot.
I've often found that with the rising cost of things keeping a reasonable stock of things some old some new is wise. Especially with non perishables I disagree with decluttering unless there's absolutely no space. Most stuff we have we need. Simply, we get tired and bored of seeing them. To declutter my clothes I store stuff seasonally and go back to those boxes to renew my wardrobe and store boring items. Rediscovering your stuff is amazing. Thank you for your videos
I agree with your points, but the most I agree with books. I would have a whole separate room just for books, I love my kindle so so much! Not only because it saves so much space, there are plenty other reasons
I agree! :) I also love that you can adjust the font and letter size, margin size etc. You can choose if you want a backlight or not, and click on a word if you don't know what it means. It really makes the reading experience even better for me :)
@@SimpleHappyZenAnother Kindle fan here, I used to have 600 books, but I decluttered them down to 50 of my favourites when I got my Kindle, and a library card. I’ve been guilty of pressing on words in physical books now to try and find the meaning 🤦♀️😂
Thank you Vera. I stopped buying decor. We have a few nature pictures on our living wall that mean alot to us. They are of a place we go every year for our anniversary. Sending hugs ❤
Hey there! I have basically stopped buying everything. I just buy the essentials like groceries and basic stuff that is needed. My home is very minimal and i love how peaceful it feels. And i´m not decorating alot for christmas i don´t like stuff cluttering up my spaces. Very good video
These are great tips. I like the esthetic of your house and way of dressing. White is all over my home too because it is calming and clean. Just found your channel.
Paper clutter is my problem. Using computer for online banking or purchases has proven to be a security risk. So much theft on level beyond our control. Plus, I have seen "mistakes" on utility bills and online purchases that force me to keep the stupid paper trail.
I love your furniture and all the natural light you have coming in. As of minimalist myself, I don’t have extra blankets and bed linens. I also don’t have huge sets of towels anymore. I have a very small wardrobe with just a few pair of shoes, one small set of dishes and I definitely don’t buy magazines or albums/CD’s anymore. This week I’m actually donating most of my books because I listen to audiobooks from the library now.
So here are my tips on minimalism: I must agree on books! I read on my kindle, it's both practical and minimalistic. Also - my creative tip - do your own cover for it (from an old time planner etc.) - it's really fun! I also like to create my own clothes from the old ones/second hands, and also my own jewelry. On souvenirs and cosmetics - I mix that. I like to buy handmade soaps/hand creams etc. when I'm on a vacation, it is always very unique piece, and a cube of soap lasts very long. In general - For me, being on a trip is actually the best time to buy something practical. When I know that I both need and want something (like a new soap) I (if possible) wait until the trip, and if I still feel I should buy that, It's my souvenir! Also, it sounds very weird, but I like to go to fast fashion/ cosmetics/ home decor stores, and I remind myself that I don't need it. "Oh, look at that cute shirt! It is clear that they wanna sell it so hard! And look how they try to manipulate me with this pink cup! Sorry guys, but I don't need it." Honestly, it's really funny, I recommend that for sure.
As far as books, I keep the ones that are part of a series I’m collecting (like rare vintage) or self help that I want to refer back too. Usually everything else leaves once I’m finished reading it, unless it’s a favorite/resonates with my heart. This has worked out good for me.
Please talk about many clothing items to have. Have you make a video for packing travelled nationally and internationally? Can you make a video for this? Packing cubes recommendations? ❤ 4:26 thank you so much 🙏
I know I'm commenting alot But I got to tell you. I share your videos and tell others about how you've helped me so much I think God gave you to us!!! Whether you believe or not you do have something special. That's HEAVENLY
you have made me want to do declutter especially my bathroom haha. also struggle with my passion of guitar. I could easily clutter my house with amps and pedals etc so its a constant battle to think do I really need it.
Such an excellent video! I try to clear my belongings out periodically and it’s time to reconsider my possessions again. So much I can live without and be clutter-free. ♥️♥️♥️
I buy a Christmas ornament, that's always our souvenirs so that when we put the tree up we talk about those trips and our favorite memories. They stay appreciated without clutter
I definitely love owning physical books and full shelves (but they are organized). I do periodically go through and delcutter them though. I have definitely cut back on knick knacks though, and am more selective. The exception is pins/buttons. I love collecting them and sticking them on my hanging canvas and bags.
I just happily gave almost all my Christmas decor & sets of specialty dishes from the last 15+ years. Each yr I break some & some get too old & look it. I stopped buying replacement Christmas stuff several yrs ago. This yr I was sick of my beautiful maximalist shinny old world tree. I’ve had it about 13 years. I had family needing Christmas things so almost all the tree decorations went to them. I saved only a few personalized. Also, any house decor unless it’s pottery or wood. I bought papier-mâché balls & kept all wood & fabric ornaments & going to be more natural & less decorative. Next yr even more Scandinavian/Nordic style. Less & neutral & less giving too. This year I feel less stress & am enjoying it more.
Great list! I resonated with so many ideas in this video. I love that the minimalism life style can alway be customized to personal preference. I stopped buying anything I know I will not use more than once especially clothing.
I’m doing an addition on my house. It’s a beautiful primary bath and a garage. I’ve been using your color palette and simple, clean esthetic! It is looking amazing!
I am a student and i had spent insane amount of money on buying clothes just cause everyone else had it. Also i fell for the "study aesthetic "like new table, markers and pretty notebooks.. But then i came across your video and it has been life changing for me..i realised my mistakes and i m still learning. Thank u❤
I did use the Skura scrub subscription for awhile, but then when I wound up with a surplus, I canceled it until using them up. I also donate generously to my local Buy Nothing group to cut down on clutter, and it feels good to help others out at the same time.
I agree especially: 1 - Most ingredients have a substitute. 25 - Forgetting about some stored decor, half the lights not working the following Christmas, taking it all down and trying to store it again, increased debt.
Yes so many ingredients can be switched out I think :) A recent recipe I made required ground mustard seeds, which I didn't have, but I just added a teaspoon of mustard, which I did already have, and it was fine :)
I stopped most decoration throughout the year, the only things that I use are real pumpkins because I love Autumn. Furthermore I use flowers to make my home feel cozy but I don’t want any decoration or knickknacks that I have to keep in my cupboards except for a few things that I really love to keep around because of the feeling that they give me.
. good ideas and with the cleaning products i now mostly use simple dish soap . with books i do like them and will not read an ebook instead . it's just the feel of a book i love .
This is a really good video. I love dealing with household items so much. In my city I have a way to get a lot of household items for free when the students leave at the end of the year. They are forced to bin the things they can't take with them and these videos help me select what i get from their boxes and bags they leave in their yards. I get things like incense sticks, good quality candles, art materials, cleaning and laundry products and beauty products. When i get them i swap them out for my old belongings which i toss. It keeps my home varied so we aren't looking at the same old things and saves me a lot of money going shopping and its fun. They also throw out a lot of fancy dress which my daughter loves. This year i found a load of designer clothing and washed it all for a kid in my neighbourhood as his family dont have much at all. We come back with heaps and heaps and im blessed as my friend lives in a huge house just for him so his place gives us time to deal with it according to your videos. I'm wondering if its the same for you guys as it is here in the UK? Xxx
I also don't own a dryer (or washer) and I only own one set of sheets :: cries :: but we go to the laundromat for sheets (I handwash otherwise). It gets cleaned fast. I do not have nicknacks at all. I do not like them one bit. They are dusty and not worth it at all to me. I used to collect loads of things that needed dusting, so having none just makes me much happier. I am impressed that your white top is so white after three years. I am a book nerd. Most of my books are library books (I have read 66 books so far this year). I also have digital books and audiobooks. I am so with you on passing books on, etc. What you said about the pretty designed and packaged items at stores making you want them but resisting is so good! I love your Studio Ghibli art by the way. Very pretty.
I'm glad to hear what you said about the seasonal decor. I have never been the person who liked to celebrate the change of seasons or important holydays by changing the home decor. Back when i was a kid, my parents were very big on that, but what it usually ment was that when parents were home and exhausted from work, it was on me and my sister to put things up, keep things fresh, fix broken pieces etc, then clean and put everything away once the season was over. I hated it. It was a pointless chore that aleats left glitter and broken pieces of plastic, dried flowers, seeds, or dust mark on everything. Once i got my own place i swore to never do those things again ever. I have one nice vase in the living room that can accomodate flowers or other decorative arrangements that may or may not correspond with the current season or holiday. Usually it contains a handmade paper flower bouquet, but sometimes i replace that with real tulips or blooming tree branches or something else of that nature and that's it.
As to containers- i use footwear boxes instead. For socks, for some small items like batteries or scissors etc. No matter it doesn't look aesthetic, 'cause i keep it all inside. Those boxes are very comfortable to use, and it looks neat and doesn't generate visual noise when i open a cupboard and see a few boxes instead of a hundred small items. As to season decorations- well, i have Halloween decor in my room all year round. I like Halloween vibe and this atmosphere is so cozy. I used to switch all these lanterns in evening to just lie and feel relax before falling asleep.
In our family, when we buy something, we must already have something in mind to donate or a space where the new item will be. We dont just buy and figure it out later.
No. 15 about containers resonates at the moment! I realise just how many I have and how freeing it has been to get rid of some of them. I am trying to get possessions down to exactly what I need and use (no more impulse buys and "just-in-case" items). I have found that getting rid of one item means you can get rid of a few more and even if just small items they no longer need to be stored and no longer need a container. Containers are my catnip - I find it hard to resist them though! Glad you are getting over your cold - summer colds are such a nuisance.
Great video! Plants.I decluttered plants and re-homed them to people who would care for them 😊They´d started to stress me out for some reason, I love being in nature but having all those plants in my home felt a suffocating
Hi Vera! This video is super awesome and helpful too! I limited buying make up items and physical books which helped me a lot. I also try to use up what's already in my pantry before buying new food items. I get inspiration from your videos ❤
11:20 advice helped me reduce my shopping and saved me ton of money and i don’t buy useless things when i go shopping and I see something i really want it I pause and ask myself do I really need it and do I have something that is similar to it and it works I buy things that I need and I learned to get rid of stuff I need especially kitchen stuff dishes cookware and clothes tons of clothes and makeup
I have an ongoing wishlist and I try to find some of those items when I go on vacation as my “souvenir”. For example, my small summer purse was wearing out, so I looked for one while in vacation. Now I have a purse I use every day that also reminds me of visiting cute little shops while on vacation!
Excellent video, Vera. #15 :One of the 3 minimalists I follow must have thousands of dollars in containers. I ADORE her but this always hits oddly to me. #18: visual clutter, definitely also, after a while you don't absorb the words so the whole point is lost.
I cleaned up my home screen on my iPhone. I ended up moving the Amazon app to a folder on a second screen and I buy a lot less on Amazon now! That wasn’t even my intention, but I am really happy with the result
I used to go to the op shop because things were cheap. Downside, i have too much stuff. Time to declutter and avoid buying. Very satisfying gifting it back.
I'm about to close on a house next month. It's my first house and I need to buy a good number of basics as I currently live with my parents and got rid of all my furniture and home items when I moved from my previous place halfway across the country (U S.). I'm trying to keep my spending in check because I really don't want to go into debt for furniture. I bought a bed/mattress and a new couch/chair, but everything else I'm planning to buy second-hand and refinish myself, if it needs it. And I'm not going out looking for everything I think I "should" have. I am planning to live in my space with what I currently own and as something comes to mind, I'll put it on a list and take time to really think on each item. Thank you so much for this reminder to not go overboard with buying "stuff" that is completely unnecessary!
When we emptied our front room to replace flooring, I only put my favorite things back, little by little, until I felt good about the space. Everything leftover was passed on to family or charity.
My grandmother used to say: Nothing is cheap if you don't need it . 😊
Grandmoms can be so wise :)
Love this! I’m definitely going to start saying that 🙌 😅
Iam not understanding the meaning !! 😢
What does it means ?🤔@@thedesertdaydreamer
@@walaahaytham218my understanding: even if something is inexpensive, if you don’t need the item, you are spending unnecessarily.
When I’m at a shop wanting to buy something totally unplanned, I always remind myself that yesterday I was perfectly happy without it in my life.
It really helps me to remember that I can appreciate something I love without having to own it 😅
Love that! ❤️😄
I like that, I’ll try to think like that in future. I usually walk away, think about it for a week, i.e. where would I put it, do I really want it, would I still like it in a year, would I need to get rid of anything to accommodate it.
I love this!
I don't even walk into stores anymore
It took me a long time to realize that I didn't have to own something just because I thought it was beautiful!
I’m 74 and I have 2 pairs of shoes winter and summer also I have very little clothing . I have just what I need and I know the difference between need and wants it took me along time to get to this point..❤️
I am 73.
Shoes for training!
Good on you hopefully I will get there to
Girl I respect you…. You are doing great…. I am working on getting there myself….just splurge and get a couple pairs of shoes for each season… I know once you get that capsule wardrobe it’s hard but we need the extra support at our age and shoes wear so quickly in the support…. Happy feet… happy life… great job and you are my inspiration I can get there… thanks for sharing 😊
. great idea . i want to wear mine off to reduce them to a couple per year . i have 7 altogether .
When I go on holidays, I often buy a ‘useful’ thing in the local shop as a memory, like a kitchen towel, a bar of soap, a dish cloth… things I do use in my daily life. Every time I use them, they give me fond memories of my trip to the Provence, Italy, Denmark…
This!!
This is a really excellent idea.💡 Xo
Oh I like that! And something you can get so much use from too
@@SimpleHappyZen i 101% agree with your lists in this video, i collect soo much things , thinking that i will use them later, but it just always gets compiled and never touch it again...... thank you for your lists and these videos, very very helpful.
I have earrings, bracelets and jewellery in my collection that I no longer wear. But I have a sentimental attachment to them. I keep oscillating between the urge to keep them or to give them away
@@indianpatriot4444 awww...thats cute, i bet you beautiful gorgeous girl in real life!
Big hug to a kindred spirit. I am 64 and have lived the minimal hygge life always. The peaceful quiet nature filled life is a joy and a comfort to me in a noisy chaotic world!
I can feel your peace.
Hugs!
@brendabishop477 where do you live and how have you managed to do that? I am genuinely interested. Love from Scotland❤
Sounds perfect! I an in UK, find everywhere too noisy lol. I need more hygge in my life! Enjoy your day 😊
Sounds wonderful😊 I’m currently on my own journey to finding a simpler, quieter life🌸
Sounds great! Can you share your biggest tips how to achieve that?
I agree, its a good list to help me decluder, 😊 but where is the art/painting on the wals? I guess its a bit cold when its to perfect?
@@mollypolly2979all depends on one's personal taste. I enjoy have things around that I've made, photos my brothers have taken, pot & pans that I inherited. I'll declutter to fit my personality which may look too cluttered for someone else 😊 do what works for you.
Totally agree. This is my take. Semi-minimalist, selective frugalist.
I use a minimum of perishable items to "decorate" my home for the season or a holiday...Flowers and foliage, pumpkins and other squash, pine cones, apples, you get the idea. They are used-up or decompose and do not require storage. I do keep candles both flame and flameless on hand all year.
Sounds very simple and cozy ❤✨️
Me too! Although I only use flameless candles (regular ones make me sick) and I have a a few precious Christmas items that all fit in the antique trunk in my apartment. It’s fun to go out and forage in nature to decorate for the seasons ❤
@@sl9906 ❤
That’s what I do as well! I love to make Christmas ornaments and garlands from dried fruit slices and star anise because they look pretty, smell fantastic, and are compostable once the holidays are over.
I cut flowers from my garden as a table decoration. Same. And seashells from my beach trips on the front porch.
We donated most ornaments , tree, and decor
It will be so easy this coming Christmas to decorate
Have been living the minimal lifestyle for 8 years now, it was of the last category to declutter
Yes! In Italy I picked up a beautiful Murano glass spoon rest and I use it every day when cooking.
I love that and I do that too 😊
Hi Vera. I've said it many times, but you are probably the most authentic youtuber I've come across 😊 always great tips that are so practical ❤
@@pranisharama6045 Aw thank you, that really means a lot to me ❤️❤️❤️ Have a wonderful weekend!!!
Oh that is such a cute idea, love that!
This is such a great idea!!
Awesome, great job! :)
thanks for all the tips…. from all the 25 things, the one thing i won’t gave up are my physical (paper) books 📚 i love the idea of having my own library as i love reading (retirement plan) and i have a space even now for all my books collection 😊 my personal preference.
Everyone needs to go backpacking from time to time. It changes your perspective when you have to carry your possessions. More is not better.
Hi Vera! 👋🏼 I am halfway through my “No Buy/Low Buy Summer,” and surprisingly, it’s been much easier than I expected! Thanks for your inspiration!
Oh that's amazing, great job!!!
I need more stuff around me. Physical books. Beautiful clothes. Pictures. Paintings. Sculptures. Art. Pillows.I cannot live in a white box.
She did say that’s ok if they bring you joy. As long as you’re not holding on to things you don’t need and just cause more stress, it’s fine
All of those things is a need for me to in order not to get depressed. But I am on a declutter journey and all other things can go 😂
I'm the same way! Empty space looks bare, cold, and sterile to me.
I can and will not part with my books. Have them tidy and organised on my bookshelf.
Most of them will be re-read, then I will probably donate them.
You can't beat the feel and the smell of a relatively new book!
Totally agree.
I felt tempted to buy baskets and towels when I last went shopping for a shirt. The old self was inspired by the sales and how great the things looked. I only bought the shirt and walked past the rest. I reminded myself I don't need those, and i was thrilled I left them on the shelf.
Awesome! :) Yes haha it can be such a nice feeling to resist a sale for things you didn't need :)
Yes that's a wonderful idea. :)
Thanks for the video Vera. Instead of buying souvenirs I bring home some snacks local to the area I have visited for my family to share.
Oh I love that! :) Thanks for sharing, have a great day!
Yes me too! :)
@@korinthecat4573 Aw thank you for that wonderful compliment, that's so nice to hear 🤗❤️
Nr. 1 Starts for me with not buying new snacks or foot until we use up the food we have. I find that we throw less food away if doing so. And it gets you creative to create meals out of the food you have in stock.
Also I really struggle with not buying books😅 I love to read and love an astatic book shelf. It’s a very emotional thing for me. but as you say, over the time there are so many books to store…
Love your videos and the calming vibe very much! Thank you 🤗
You are so right, most of the thing we dont need but we buy it impulsively.
For vacuum accessories I Velcro them to the vacuum. Saves space, you don’t lose them and they are always handy when cleaning.
My dining room sign says"Masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting".😅
@kathleenhill5838 do you keep the sign up for guests to see?

Thanks so much for the tips. I really enjoy the aesthetic, tone, pace, organization, and mostly the waste mindfulness of your videos. What a pleasure and SO important when materialism contributes to so much corruption, illness and ecocide. Great work!
I use a seasonal or holiday wreath on my external front door to mark occasions. It amounts to 4 to 6 versions, or a single wreath can be redecorated if that's your jam. Otherwise, a couple to switch out still doesn't take much storage. And I get to enjoy it each time I come home and still keep my living space serene.
Not that I’ll go completely minimal but I feel that this video can help me make some adjustments
Thank you!
Love that, and thank you for the kind words and encouragement always 🤗💕🌳
Thank you for this video, I admire people like you able to think structured and keep their homes clutter free, I try to do this also but realise that I am hanging too much on things having ideal value for me
Vera you're such an incredible human being ❤

Your solution to stationary clutter is awesome. I have a stationary habit that I am trying to curb. Seeing that there is a person in this world who only has one stash is very inspiring.
I decluttered my space today, and I feel so relieved ❤

"Throw it out. You'll never remember it."

Yeah, idc about trends. I wear the fashion that speaks to me. Idc if it’s “in” or not. I wear what I like. Period.
I am always very impressed and amazed with your videos. You are just brilliant!

Ypu really have been able to get through this head I'm so confused about stuff and you help me see things in a very practical way
Paper clutter is my problem.
So here are my tips on minimalism:
I must agree on books!
Sorry guys, but I don't need it."
Honestly, it's really funny, I recommend that for sure.
❤ 4:26 thank you so much 🙏
Thanks! I don't pack very well, basically I just chuck some things into a backpack hahaha :)

But I got to tell you.

Bedankt voor je mooie video ik probeer in t hele huis regelmatig te minimaliseren en minder terug te kopen
Graag gedaan Loes, fijne maandag toegewenst! :)
you have made me want to do declutter especially my bathroom haha. also struggle with my passion of guitar. I could easily clutter my house with amps and pedals etc so its a constant battle to think do I really need it.
Such an excellent video! I try to clear my belongings out periodically and it’s time to reconsider my possessions again. So much I can live without and be clutter-free. ♥️♥️♥️
I think you've struck a good balance between crisp and cozy. I'll be going over these categories in my home tomorrow. ❤🏡
Minimalism isn't just good for remodeling, it's actually a whole way of living, kinda culture itself.❤
Thank u❤
I am with you, Vera!❤ A wipe board with post-its & stuff would drive me crazy!!!🙃
Xxx
I love where you live!
Thank you so much, that's nice to hear :) Have a lovely day!

You're very welcome, glad you enjoyed it!
I have an ongoing wishlist and I try to find some of those items when I go on vacation as my “souvenir”. For example, my small summer purse was wearing out, so I looked for one while in vacation. Now I have a purse I use every day that also reminds me of visiting cute little shops while on vacation!
Oh that's so cute, great idea :)
