I think of my house as having a "weight". Whenever I take stuff away (recycle, Goodwill, dump, etc.) I feel like my house weighs less! This motivates me to declutter.
Hi Vera, I lost my beloved husband recently and I've been feeling beyond sad. It was by chance that I found your videos on RUclips a couple of weeks ago. Since then I've been looking forward to watching them every time I pick up my phone. I'm impressed by your wisdom at such a young age. Thanks for sharing all these wonderful tips!
Hi Margaret. I'm so sorry for your immense loss... Sending you a big hug, strength, comfort and my sincere condolences during this time of grief. ❤️ Take good care of yourself my friend🌺
In some cities here in Germany it's common to just put a cardboard box on the street with stuff that's too good for trash but you don't want to sell it. So people passing by can just take whatever they want and that is SUCH a nice thing! :) You can find anything in these gift boxes: baby clothes, vintage lamps, books, vases, plants, etc 😊
I wish it was the case where I live! I don't struggle with sentimental things nearly as much as I struggle with nice or useful things that I don't need but there's no one I can give those to. That's actually my only big issue with decluttering. Some things can be easily donated somewhere but not all and those that can't be donated easily remain the clutter in my home. I have no issues with throwing away things that are worn-out regardless of how I loved them earlier but hardly used high quality things are such a pain in the ass.
@@Hugo_Malifor things like that I put up an ad on ebay or a local platform. Usually they get picked up within a day or two - because they are good and for free. That works great for bigger items. For smaller items, I just put them in a box, take a photo, put up an ad also and just name it 'flea market box'. This usually gets picked up within just a few days, too, by people who sell their own things at the flea market and want to make just a little more money. Good luck!
This is a very helpful, useful and enjoyable video. I am 77 (live in Portland, Oregon, USA). I am known for not keeping stuff. I am always purging. (much to me adult daughter's dismay. I told her that when I die, she and her husband (they live in The Netherlands) will be able to empty my 3 bedroom home in 8 hours. She agreed with me! I have done this all my life primarily because: a cluttered-filled home doesn't give room for organized thoughts.
One thing I was surprised to discover after decluttering for a few years was that you actually get very good at it. I’m so much clearer in my decision making. Making 100s of decisions has led me to know myself very well and what it is I value in an object. Like, I feel like I can hear my inner voice better because of it, which transcends decluttering and objects and things you can own, and that voice has gotten into every part of my life.
A friend of mine recently had a sudden nervous breakdown and had to be admitted to hospital as an emergency. No time to pack a bag, she only had the clothes she was wearing at the time. As she lives alone, she had to ask a (male) friend to go to her house and get her some underwear, pyjamas, a few shirts, trousers etc. I am in the process of decluttering my closet and this made me think. If I asked someone (even my husband) to do this for me, they would bring me the first things they would come across and that could be the scratchy bra, the too-short dress, the top with the straps always falling down, that I've been hanging onto for ages 'just in case'. Aaargh! That's it, I'm getting rid of everything that doesn't feel quite right. My friend is much better now, we're going on a hike next weekend, and now I have a dilemma: should I thank her for this involuntary epiphany? It's a frivolous subject in the middle of a serious crisis, but then she has a great sense of humour.
Wishing you a lovely, restorative break. One thing I have found helpful is to stop decluttering until I have gotten rid of the things already decluttered. Too often things decluttered accumulated in piles or bags or boxes by a door. Then I felt overwhelmed by a huge pile. Now there are two bins by the back door. When they are full, my effort shifts from decluttering to getting those things out of my house. This method has helped me immensely.
Vera when I declutter I take things I'm getting rid of and immediately put them in our car. We go to town twice a week and the charity shop is on the list of places we need to go and drop off. Thank you so much for your ideas and tips. ❤❤ enjoy your time off have fun.
My stress and OCD have been getting the best of me lately... I was just thinking how badly I need to declutter my apartment, then BOOM, this is posted! Yay, thank you Vera.
My biggest obstacles to decluttering are sentimental value and the environmental impact. It's hard for me to haul things to a thrift store knowing how much stuff ends up in a landfill anyway. However, your explanation helped and it's something my husband said too - it will end up in a landfill anyway, either now or when I'm gone. Now I have yet to find a way to fight the sentimental part. It is SO HARD. They all seem to have a face for me, even if it's just clothing. Have a good break!
As I child, I had over a hundred stuffed animals. Over the years, I slowly let them go until I was down to about 6. I am 53, and I will keep these 6 for the rest of my life. ❤
I've been in the process of de-cluttering prior to a big house project. For the first time, (I'm a seasoned de-clutter-er as well as practiced donator and recycle-er), I realized it is OK to actually throw things away. I collected up a big pile of very worn out clothes that I had been keeping for dust cloths but never actually used. I cut up one pair of flannel pajamas to dust with and put the rest in a trash bag and put them in the trash container! No guilt!
I was against the “maybe pile” but a delayed donation pile made me change my mind. I’m 8+ months postpartum and decluttered some pre pregnancy clothes, but we didn’t take the donation bag to the donation center right away, the day we were going to I saw a couple of my favorite pants that I couldn’t pull above my knees a few months ago, I thought they will never fit me again because “hips get wider after pregnancy”. Anyway, I decided to try them on one last time, and I was able to put them on!! They are a bit tight still but I’m hoping I can wear them soon since I’m still losing pregnancy weight. Moral of the story, keep a small maybe pile!!
I think if you have a little bit too much things as bed linen or underwear and they are all okay and look good, you should keep them, bc later you are going to need new ones, and so you can just save money. But it works only if you like all of the peaces. Rational minimalism
All of your advice here is spot on. Especially about throwing things out - it will be trash eventually, plus doing this disagreeable task now likely means the prevention of purchasing 100 other things in the future. Very good mindset shift! Love your channel! ❤️
I heard another version of the magic question--"If this got dog poop on it, would I bother cleaning it or throw it in the trash?" Lots of good info in this, the guilt issue has always been a big one for me but I've gotten MUCH better about it.
As a guy, I had to learn to not turn every worn out t shirt into a rag. After a while, you have plenty, and when you notice a shirt is frayed, no, it's not a 'yardwork shirt' it's trash. Use it once to wipe up grime, and toss it in the trash. There, you used it one last time, things are cleaner and you've made a decision. I'm now to the point where I wear the same shirts over and over in the hopes of wearing them out, because I already have too many.
Such a great video Vera, and I can confirm that taking your clothes out of the closet to declutter them all at once works! Just did that when decluttering my closet space, and it’s a bit overwhelming at first, but if you give yourself a magic number or envision what you want to work towards, you really begin to realize what belongs. Something else I’ll add as a tip is when in doubt with sentimental items, take a photo of them, set them aside, and give yourself a timeframe to come back to them later to see if you still feel the same way. If you realize you don’t want it any longer or are itching to get rid of it due to that looming deadline, then it’s okay to part ways with it, but tell it good-bye (Marie Kondo was really onto something with telling items good-bye). It’ll make you emotional at times, but it provides closure. If you think that item can be repurposed, do that instead. One example of repurposing an item is I had a pearl cockatiel named Thor that passed away in 2020. I’ve always kept his first pearl feather he shed as the breeder told me that once he sheds those feathers, they’ll never come back. I still have that feather today, and it means a lot to me, but it’s just in a sandwich bag. I want to do a watercolor painting to honor his memory and frame it with his feather beside it. ❤ Thank you so much for this video, Vera. Wishing you all the best in health and happiness. Have a great break! 🪷😊
A bit off topic. I like your dresses, very cute. I want to buy some too. Regarding the topic of the video, the most difficult thing is digital decluttering. And It is difficult to throw away old things from the past that have been lying around for many years, but looking at which you remember yourself and loved ones who were still alive at that time. Thanks for the video. Lately I've been following the principle - less shopping equals less clutter.
Your videos are so easy to follow, incredibly practical, and very enjoyable! Thank you for putting so much effort into sharing your experiences and advice.
The environment waste issue with decluttering I look at it as the environment cost is when the item has been made . Therefore its okay to discard unwanted items and also helps with being more intentional with future purchases
The ending bit with Sims 4; I totally get like that, too. Who else is like us here? I’m actually curious. 😂 When I play Minecraft to do some survival, or Animal Crossing, I could spend weeks daily working on my projects! It is so much fun to do. I love constructing homes in cliffs or other natural areas of Minecraft because then I can always turn them into these massive projects that bring me so much joy.
Just having you define the processes and challenges as "not just me" brings as.much clarity as the tips. I feel I understand the whole project so much better, so thank you! And happy break, my dear!
Thank you for these very useful tips! Have a gentle and restorative break Vera! It is well deserved. Sending gentle hugs and much appreciation for all of your content. 🌱 🌱 🌱
Good for you for taking a break! Enjoy it and thank you for this video. I've definitely been putting off decluttering, so I need this video... especially with fall right around the corner.
I had an old set of knives, like you I wasn't sure what to do with them. I found they are really useful in the garden, small ones do between paving stones and the big knives do the lawn edge beautifully.
A staycation sounds perfect!! I wish for you a relaxing, rejuvenating time! Hope you enjoy some peaceful and cozy tea time! I would say that is one of my favorite things I learned from your channel! To be able to be present in the moment whilst sipping slowly a delicious, prepared tea! Peace and love to you Miss Vera!
Thanks for the great tips. I need it since I am now having to deal with my mom's stuff/clutter/junk in a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house while she goes into an assisted living facility. I personally am feeling overwhelmed. I want to get rid of all/most of it except for maybe a few pieces of jewelry..
Thank you so much for this video Vera. Somehow it resonated for me & I jumped to sort through a "dread" linen closet that I was avoiding for ages. It was done in around an hour, I removed about 50% of things I could finally let go og & they made it into the boot of my car for next op shop trip. Thank you again for all that you do; beautifully simple, with calm & style.
Have a nice vacation Vera! Really inspiring video! ❤ I think an idea might be if you can post some old videos again, when you are on vacation. I'm not sure if it works, but you have so much great content already, and if you want some new to discover you while you have a break maybe that can work. And we also get a reminder to watch some old stuff as well. It's worth seeing again. I wish you a lovely autumn! / Stina
Thank you for this video content! ❤ I appreciate the tips that are so useful in our decluttering our home/rehoming items. 😊❤ Yes, especially to that "it's annoying" tip is one we are using when something seems to be in the way too much, it has got to go. 😊
I applaud what you said with number two. The idea of people who don't want to waste something they have but they keep buying things that one day will be wasted. . .such a good mindset for them to have before making another purchase. I love that. Well said!! I tell so many people to give up ten to fifteen minutes of their day to declutter and they still make excuses while they can spend 30 minutes sitting on their phone. I am not a fan of the maybe pile. I feel if I am on the fence on something, I'll keep it slightly longer and decide in another week or two if I am using it enough to keep it. When I revisit (and as a minimalist, you understand we area always revisiting our things), then I will decide for sure if I should keep something or not. I recently did this and felt so good to get rid of it. If I physically put something in a maybe pile, I know right away I don't want it, so it should just go in the decluttering pile instead for me. Do you have a recycling center or anything near you where you can bring your knives so they can be remade into something else? Do they not take knives at thrift stores or anything? I never thought about that. I have had the same knives set since I got married twenty years ago.
Guilt of contaminating the environment by getting rid of too many things is a motivation for me not to buy so many unnecessary things in the future. Another motive to get rid of things for me is a thought that there are many people much poorer than me aand they will be happy to take and use. Thank you for your videos!
It’s time to rest a bit and reflect on all you accomplish with your work of helping others! I hope you feel refreshed by your downtime. You deserve it.
Dear Vera, if the knifes are still usable you can donate them to uni kids or refugee homes. If they are not, find a smith that can separate the cable from the blade. He can keep the iron and you can toss the plastic
Beautiful video, dear Vera, enjoy your very well deserved vacation. You made me think about books, some of them are now really useful for me anymore, but I keep them because of guilt. See ya in three weeks, hugs!
This was so helpful for me. I have just been through two house clean outs of people very close to me. While I didn't need their stuff. I wanted a lot of it for various reasons. Now I am purging my house and what I feel like is two more houses from my house. It hasn't been easy, but I am slowly letting things go... I am in the US and in a small town. I put the knives in an open box where the trashmen could see them. They took the knives and I assume everyone is safe and sound.
Thanks Vera, I always love your videos! I always find something in there that inspires me or makes my decluttering easier. I really like your guilt tip, especially in relation to environmental guilt. I still have items that I don't know what to do with because I think they might be able to be recycled somehow but I don't know how. Regarding your knives - do you have a scrap metal recycler in your city? Also I just wanted to say - great to hear you are taking a break, you don't need to apologise or explain why! Of course you need a break! Hope you're having a great time :)
I love decluttering my fridge and usually wash out the whole fridge every 2 months as you instantly see the results and the decisions are easy because something is either still good or it's not lol. I also just decluttered my art cabinet as one of the drawers had broken so had to take out everything to fix it and it was extremely satisfying. Enjoy your time off!!
It’s the sentimental things that are sooooo difficult for me to declutter. 😣 even things I haven’t seen in YEARS… If I pull them out with the intent to declutter, I inevitably feel nostalgic and decide to keep it. 😑 if it was 5 things, no big deal, but it’s a storage unit 😭😭😭😭
thank you for this video! have a nice couple of weeks off, take care and all the best from your neighboring country germany. btw i was in houten (for the plant fair botanika) two days. ago. netherlands is such a charming country and the people are so kind and welcoming. 😊
Yes, bathroom is really easy. And I'm actually getting better at not rebuying the same kind of thing I've already decluttered multiple times over and over, because I got enough proof that I'm obviously simply not a skin product person. To me avoiding 'refilling' the newly gained space is really the hardest part - and finding new homes for decluttered things that are not trash. Making the decision is actually so much easier than I expected. It's the next step that gets me stuck every single time because I just don't have the energy for selling things online.
The best way to discard old knives is to first wrap each blade in newspaper and then tape. Next, fold a piece of cardboard around each one and tape them securely. Then they can be thrown away safely. Enjoy your time off.
My evil dad told me when I was a kid that Queen Elizabeth II would randomly visit people's houses and so we had to be clean and organized. The Coronation plates had to be on display and the bookshelves must pass the white glove dust test. I still worry about this in my house.
One of the reasons why I have lots of duplicate clothes is so that I don't HAVE to panic if something gets ruined. I hate that sickening feeling. That's happened too often in my life. Now if something gets ruined, I have a replacement and I can let the ruined item go without having a panic attack. People who never had to do without won't relate to that at all, but just saying. I spent 65 years of my life teetering on the edge of disaster; I don't want to feel like that any more.
Goede content, dank je wel. Ik zou die messen in mijn fietstas leggen en ermee naar de milieustraat fietsen, en het dumpen in 'oud metaal'. Ondertussen: fijne vakantie!
I think declutterring things that I have guilt for is one of my hardest like if some one gave me or its like you said a teddy with a cute face its so hard to get rid of - but im about to go get rid of somethings that i thought of during this video
Thanks for watching! 🤗🌱🍵 And be sure to stick around 'till the end of the video for a little announcement. 💕
have some fun and a well deserved rest :)

The ending bit with Sims 4; I totally get like that, too. Who else is like us here? I’m actually curious. 😂
When I play Minecraft to do some survival, or Animal Crossing, I could spend weeks daily working on my projects! It is so much fun to do. I love constructing homes in cliffs or other natural areas of Minecraft because then I can always turn them into these massive projects that bring me so much joy.
Enjoy your break Vera. You are an inspiration & thank you for all you do❤
Thank you so much 🤗
Just having you define the processes and challenges as "not just me" brings as.much clarity as the tips. I feel I understand the whole project so much better, so thank you! And happy break, my dear!
Thank you for these very useful tips! Have a gentle and restorative break Vera! It is well deserved. Sending gentle hugs and much appreciation for all of your content. 🌱 🌱 🌱
Aw thank you so much! 🤗🌳🍵
Good for you for taking a break! Enjoy it and thank you for this video. I've definitely been putting off decluttering, so I need this video... especially with fall right around the corner.
Thanks! :) And I'm happy to hear the video had good timing for you :)
I had an old set of knives, like you I wasn't sure what to do with them. I found they are really useful in the garden, small ones do between paving stones and the big knives do the lawn edge beautifully.
You're actually such a decluttering pro. So much valuable strategies in this video
I agree with all the suggestions. Really like the red wine question! Enjoy your break. ❤
Glad to hear it! Yes that's such a good question haha. 😁🌱🌷
Have a good break! Thanks for the video! Very good reminders.
Thanks so much Diane 🤗🍵 Have a great weekend!
I think an idea might be if you can post some old videos again, when you are on vacation. I'm not sure if it works, but you have so much great content already, and if you want some new to discover you while you have a break maybe that can work. And we also get a reminder to watch some old stuff as well. It's worth seeing again.
I wish you a lovely autumn!

Thank you for this video content! ❤ I appreciate the tips that are so useful in our decluttering our home/rehoming items. 😊❤
Yes, especially to that "it's annoying" tip is one we are using when something seems to be in the way too much, it has got to go.
Good point about items eventually being discarded by someone sometime.Thank you ❤
It’s time to rest a bit and reflect on all you accomplish with your work of helping others! I hope you feel refreshed by your downtime.
You deserve it.
Thank you for another helpful video😊 Enjoy your staycation!!!
Dear Vera, if the knifes are still usable you can donate them to uni kids or refugee homes. If they are not, find a smith that can separate the cable from the blade. He can keep the iron and you can toss the plastic
Thanks for your effort and enjoy your break!🎉
Thanks so much! I will :)
Beautiful video, dear Vera, enjoy your very well deserved vacation. You made me think about books, some of them are now really useful for me anymore, but I keep them because of guilt. See ya in three weeks, hugs!
I love your videos, thank you for making them. Wishing you a great time off, get the rest that you need🤗
Loved the video vera❤..got inspired definitely..have a happy time ahead
Enjoy your break, Vera!!! A staycation sounds wonderful and restorative.
Thanks so much Lisa :) Have a lovely day!!
I thought I know all about decluttering still those points - brilliant! Great video
Enjoy your break Vera! Keep smiling 😁
Thank you, I will! 🤗🌳
Always stay happy and healthy love you❤
Thank you 🤗🌱🍵
These are all excellent tips❣️
My favorite tip today: if you are trying to decide on an item is use it, wear it and you will know by end of day!!
So true!! 🙌🏻
Thank you for such good suggestions!
great rules
I love you modeling life minimalism..by taking breaks!
Only we have the power to rescue ourselves. No one else can, and no one else may. We must traverse the path ourselves.
Sul sul!
I loooooooove the sims 4 ❤❤❤
It’s the sentimental things that are sooooo difficult for me to declutter. 😣 even things I haven’t seen in YEARS… If I pull them out with the intent to declutter, I inevitably feel nostalgic and decide to keep it. 😑 if it was 5 things, no big deal, but it’s a storage unit 😭😭😭😭
thank you for this video! have a nice couple of weeks off, take care and all the best from your neighboring country germany. btw i was in houten (for the plant fair botanika) two days. ago. netherlands is such a charming country and the people are so kind and welcoming. 😊
Enjoying your video with a fancy homemade London Fog drink. 💜
Have a nice lovely break time, well deserved! 😊
Thank you for another inspirational video. Enjoy your break you've definitely earned it ❤
Another great video Vera thank you xxxxx
I love your channel!
Enjoy your time off Vera. We will be here when you return.❤
Enjoy your time off!! 🌷🌷🌷
I love joining decluttering challenges!
Have a great holiday 😍🥰❤❤
The best way to discard old knives is to first wrap each blade in newspaper and then tape. Next, fold a piece of cardboard around each one and tape them securely. Then they can be thrown away safely. Enjoy your time off.
Thank you simple happy vera from simple happy zen ❤️!
“Because it has a face.” That made me laugh!
At the end, stand back and take a second to appreciate or admire what you’ve accomplished. It helps me want to take on more decluttering.
My evil dad told me when I was a kid that Queen Elizabeth II would randomly visit people's houses and so we had to be clean and organized. The Coronation plates had to be on display and the bookshelves must pass the white glove dust test. I still worry about this in my house.
LOL. That's not evil. (Kind of like saying Christmas gifts come from St. Nicholas.) It instilled cleanliness in you - which is a good thing. 😅
Lmao
Love this😂
I like the tip of "if it's not a heck yes, then its probably a no."
Enjoy your break 😊
I think my favorite tip would be to make sure everything has a home place within your house
great advice thank you
You're so welcome! :)
"If I spilled wine on it, would I be sad, would I fix or replace it, or would I feel relieved?" Oh dang that's a great question!
I just imagine if my cats puts their claws in my clothing would I be sad 😂 as that did happen previously
Goede content, dank je wel. Ik zou die messen in mijn fietstas leggen en ermee naar de milieustraat fietsen, en het dumpen in 'oud metaal'. Ondertussen: fijne vakantie!
Have an amazing staycation!
Have a good rest!😌🤗
I think declutterring things that I have guilt for is one of my hardest like if some one gave me or its like you said a teddy with a cute face its so hard to get rid of - but im about to go get rid of somethings that i thought of during this video
