Carrying a heavy load already with as many rules 😅 One principle I had been finding useful towards maintaining order in and around the home: Doing any task that will take 2 minutes or less, immediately - without delay. Contrary: Remain aware how a chaotic space in reality develops in 2 minutes or less.
I have found that if I NEVER buy new hangers, my closet stays uncluttered, and my clothing selections are easier to make. When I find that I haven't worn a certain item for a while, I'll throw it out or donate it and I get a new hanger to potentially buy a new shirt.
The nightly reset is called "putting the house to bed" in our home! We can't go to bed until the house has been put to bed, makes it part of a normal bedtime routine instead of it feeling like a burden keeping us from our bedtime routine.
We have a declutter rule in our house: whenever you go to the thrift store or we shop online, we must get rid of something. This keeps clutter in check by not adding to it.
I cut back on social media back in 2018 and haven't gone back. The only social media format I have stayed with is RUclips, I'm only subscribed to channels that teach and inspire. That's why I watch this channel. You're never too old or too young to learn new things from others. I have also recently joined the Life Reset Challenge because even though I have cut out Social media considerably, I still struggle with finding time to reach and complete my goals. Thank you Gabe for this opportunity to learn how to reset. 🙌😀
Yeah... Social media sucks. If someone has an announcement to make, and I am part of their life, they will let me know directly. I don't need to keep up with the polished press releases that pretend to be real life. And I don't need the pressure of following my friends as if they are impersonal businesses. Broad social media is such a stupid toxic waste of time! I follow a few topics on RUclips. I follow a few message boards. But all of that is for news, education, and entertainment. Anything social is in a chat group, email, text, or phone. Life is better that way.
@wenkaywc. I hear you. RUclips is the only media format I follow. I will follow your advice now and subscribe only to the channels that teach and inspire. You made me realise that everything else is a distraction and a waste of my precious time. Plus, I really feel drained after watching some of the fearful doom mongers out there that i am sure affect my psyche negatively.

Experience: We did that with our sons for Christmas once we landed in their late middle school/into high school ages. We traveled at Christmas time. They are now in their 20s, and we have great discussions about those trips, but I sincerely doubt we'd have happy, laugh filled talks about whatever toys or...stuff...we would have given them instead.
Great comment. I remember my travel experiences with my family much more than any 'item' I've received. Except maybe my Mickey Mouse t-shirt from Disneyland... 50 years ago. 🐀 I still have those memories.. don't have the shirt !! ❤
This isn't new to me, but watching your videos (and rewatching) gets me back on track. And your rules aren't crazy strict, which makes doing things much more realistic and manageable.
When my kids were young, I decided one would get a birthday party and one would get an experience, and the next year they swapped. They have summer birthdays a month apart, and are just 2yrs apart in age, so they both benefitted from this plan. They loved it, and we had some great times.
Friend sent me here . I struggle with anxiety which has become more of easily irritated. Plus I need to stop blowing money. I have already started in the areas of my house where I'm in alot. I have lots of rooms to pile stuff into that I need to work on. But just getting rid of cluttered decorations and spaces has made me feel so much better. I actually watched another video and she said don't decorate just to have decorations. Make it work and make sense. I think when you see too much or when I do it stresses me out . Now I'm gonna binge these videos
I’m doing a massive purge and downsizing. I’m going from a rented two bedroom townhome, to renting a single bedroom and house-sharing with a friend (2024 version of Golden Girls) 8 boxes of books went to thrift store (I kept 8 boxes I can’t live without 😆 hey it’s still progress), all the clothes I kept fit on a single clothing rack (no closet on my bedroom). My bed is a foldout Japanese futon mattress (no frame) on top of a tatami mat. I fold up my bed in the morning and my workout space is right there. Nice and simple, easy peasy. I’m moving on less than two weeks and my soon to be old house is chaos, but it won’t be for long.
Good luck on your journey! I spent a year renting a room in a chaotic house with 5 other people, after several years of financial backsliding. It was actually fun, and changed my financial situation drastically. I then was able to buy a big condo, and rented out a room/ bathroom to others, passing on the same life changing opportunity, while helping my own finances. I hope your experience is wonderful!
I like the idea of the box. I once read that the most important thing in a paperless office or household isn't document management software and such, it's the paper recycling bin. This is kind of a similar situation.
7:04 There are phone apps you can use to allow certain numbers or secret phrases (via text msg) to come through your phone when it's on silent mode. That way family can reach you on your cell in case of an emergency, even when you are unavailable.
When comes to buying high quality I agree. Here is a twist on that. Seems the modern washers and dryers don’t last very long. We found a guy that rebuilds appliances so we bought an older washer and soon after an older dryer this guy rebuilt. He guarantees them and they are simple no fancy bells and whistles and they do the job quicker as well. They were commercial grade. Cheap and they do a great job! We also just bought a new stove but it is high end and worth the money for us.
He’s right about the house on fire rule. I literally cleaned out everything from my room and closet and i was shocked how much I got rid of and still have a lot of stuff I feel. I’m about to do it again in a month.
I love your videos. I recently watched something on Swedish Death Cleaning. The concept that if you were going to die tomorrow, would you want your family to have to sort through it all. If you don't want them to have to deal with it then get rid of it. It has really helped me a lot!
I thought that just applied to the idea of dying in dirty underwear. Vet y embarrassing. I think of my sister and her family having to travel across the country only to find my house a complete mess. I need to clean it if not for myself, but for her if I should die.
I agree with everything except for Black Friday sale If you are looking for some appliances or high end purchase Black Friday sales is one of the best days to get the best discount and finally buy something you’ve been holding off buying for a long time
You're missing the point I think. Shopping a sale for something you need is a great idea. Shopping for shopping sakes, because everyone else is shopping, is not a good idea.
Loved💜 " Sometimes you need a friend to slap you across the face" gently and lovingly. That was the best! I can so relate to that because I am usually that friend who will do that to others no matter what it is. Thanks for that. 💜
The great reset - no spend month edition got us our house deposit in 3yrs. We bought our house in 2022 ❤ were also practice upgradelessness, quality purchasing and experiences over stuff. One i would add (unless i missed it, its a lot of content) is a goals check in with yourself and your other half! Really dig into it not just a single sentence so you know you (and they!) are working towards the same thing itll help you move there with less resistance.
after been sticking to only wear clothes that is minimal, my colleague told me if I was a security guard before, I know it is quite hilarious but I get to see my life being simple, trying to at least give myself a cheat day to wear and look fabulous before the end of the month
the "one thing" rule reminds me of something in the fitness world called "periodization." Periodization is, as the name suggests, having periods of time where you are more focused on doing different things. You don't get your optimal gains by having a constantly evenly distributed focus on every single one of your fitness goals, it's actually more helpful to focus on the growth of one aspect of your fitness, then on another, then on another. There is a certain really high stimulus that is required to make really good gains in one thing, but it doesn't take a whole lot of stimulus to just maintain it. If you try to maximally stimulate everything at the same time, you'll probably either burn out (mentally or physically), or you'll just not actually have the ability to provide enough stimulus. Instead, keep maintenance on everything except for a couple things that you really want to improve at the moment, and cycle which things you are actively improving. It's not a requirement for making progression, but it has been shown to be more optimal. And if you generalize the reasons that it works, it makes sense that it would work pretty well for other goals unrelated to fitness.
If you don’t want to wear all black, on Sunday just have your clothes laid out for the week. I usually have my clothes on hangers in order in the closet, underwear socks laid out and pants. Same for the kids. I’m an ocd dad
Nightly Reset - this reminds of the quote by Admiral McRaven "Make your bed". It refers to a mental health tactic to stay above water by doing the simple things so that they dont compound into bigger issues. do you have a couple dishes, do them real quick so that it doesnt become a sink full. Do you have a messy bed , make it when you wake up so you at least have a comfy bed to come to at the end of the long day.
Hey, don’t agree with you politically or view wise, but your minimalism videos have always grounded me, thanks for sticking true to your core message. 💙
@15:17 as someone with depression, breaking the mold of the mental illness assumption isn’t that easy. I try to tell myself it’s okay to live my own way, but mental health and living a certain way for so long proves a challenge
Same. Ankle surgery that wasn't able to get me back as active as i was previously. I can walk without pain, but I won't be able to do as much as I was before. Its been hard to get over that hump, and it's made me lazy about lots of other things too. Good luck!
Getting rid of the 80% can be made easier if you hide or store things away from use for x amount of time. If you don't miss or need it, you can feel comfortable letting it go. We this with our tv's (for parenting, not for minimalism) and only pulled them out of storage to sell them in exchange for the aquariums added in their place. This was in 2018 and our aquariums are still thriving in a tv free household:)
Got that on knowing 27 people ..this is a thought on being part of minimalism especially knowing the value on what you allow to be close to you for a healthier and minimalistic life.
15:21 so far is my favorite time stamp of this video, the older I get the more I realize it’s good to not be doing what everyone else is doing. I used to do things just because everyone around me is doing them or I become envious of them, but I’ve learned for most things ,the majority is wrong and I didn’t really miss out on anything. It’s ironic that most of the people I was envious of are now envious of me lol. 👍🏻
This is awesome! I totally caught myself doing a lot of these things. As for the 80% rule, I usually wait about 6 months to a year to declutter my stuff. If I haven’t used it during that time, I donate it!
I've got a "6 month rule" : Every 6 months I go through all the stuff I have stored away in boxes / closets / (basement / attic -- if I had a basement / attic) And ask myself "Have I needed / used this at all in the last 60mo?" -- if "NO" then ask "Is this something I am LIKELY to need in the next 6mo?" -- if "NO" then I get rid of it.
Paperwork is important to keep. My parents just sold the family home after 47 years. Thankfully my parents kept paperwork from their married life. The solicitors & accountant needed proof of price paid in 1977 for house, residency utility bill from 2013 etc. The sale could not go through if they didn’t have paperwork
It's amazing how history keeps repeating itself, and the urgency to prepare is definitely real! Investing can be the best decision of your financial life. I started my journey in 2021, and it’s been the best choice I've made for my finances.
No matter how long you wait, opportunities will arise in the market. Invest for the long term, and avoid being too greedy or too fearful. Making informed decisions is crucial; relying on luck isn’t enough, so partnering with an advisor is essential.
Great information and concise! The only thing I disagree with is that I can have the banana and the peanut butter at the same time, but I understand the concept. 😄
I’m in great need to get back to the BOX rule. I loved giving grand kids horse back riding, fencing and ice skating and curling, also certain art classes and even boat building.
I’m loving the salt n pepper curls, I have the same hair and I’ve been putting highlights in for years but I think after seeing other millennials embracing their gray, I’m going to as well 😊
We live in a world and a time that moves faster than our brains are trained for. I sometimes long for the pre-Internet era when life didn’t feel so overwhelming. Weekends were quiet, and I could sit back and read a book. It’s difficult to live in the moment when the phone keeps ‘dinging’ in new messages. Can’t even turn off the phone without someone worrying about you.
TY Gabe, this is quality info, will just say that I picked up the Nightly reset from someone I look up to. He's a Grandmaster in Kung Fu, and he told me he does this. This is a guy whose life is super jam packed. Oh, and I have a BIG H & M bag full of clothes that just sat in my closet- mostly synthetic. I listened to my body, which told me to ditch it. One more thing, Dr Joe Dispenza suggested to remove photos of old relationships in order to create space for your new future life to come in. I just subscribed because your video adds value. Now off to my yoga class. (I again listened to my body and have scheduled LESS classes to let me adjust. ) Cheers from Australia.
Great advices, I need to stop after a few minutes, too fast, too much, need more peace of mind to listening to this complete video. Thank you for your work and intention.
Hey Gabe, I NEED YOUR WIFE to do this same version. With two young kids,I want to hear her say, only wear the same uniform every day, be intentional about every day, every moment, every meal, every emotion. I want to hear her say, don’t keep stuff, like kid art, like family Xmas ornaments, like craft material for kids, like multiple (used?) instruments for experimentation, sports gear like snorkels, snowboards, wetsuits, bikes, etc btw, two kids mean two sets of each! Your tips work for men, and mostly, single, men. Real life is Doctor appts, Teacher meetings, family obligations, swim lessons, sports practices -- there’s no ‘super yes’ or 90%, when it comes to aunts, cousins, grandparents. You just do it! Geez, women live in a totally alternate universe to you. Gabe, have you taken the Xmas card photos yet, gotten them back from the printer’s, have them addressed and ready to send out the day after Thanksgiving? Speaking of which, what are you cooking and bringing to the ALL DAY family holiday? Surely, you want to expose your kids to their history, to receive their family blessings, and enjoy their full love. Hah!!! And don’t forget Xmas is right after that. Do you have your lights and tree ready to go? My GERMAN mom taught me, when you have children, your life ends, and theirs begins. Well, maybe only if you want them to visit you, happily and willingly, someday.
I live in his universe😅 I would totally go insane if I didn’t apply a good amount of these rules. As a working mom of young kids it keeps me on track and not overwhelmed with all the things you sum up.
I wish I had your energy levels. after a day at work - being yelled at by other peoples teenagers: all me and my adhd have the energylevels and sensory capacety for is lying on the couch. alone. in silence. doomscroll. not move. no people.
Find a form of exercise you actually enjoy. If energy is a struggle, so the running and boxing, and try a walk in the woods or park. Exercise, especially outdoors, has been shown to have serious anti depressant affects, relieves stress, and will make you more healthy to have more energy later! (I did emergency dispatch for 11 years, overnight. Exercise was my savior. )
I've really enjoyed this. Thank you for this content. One thing that stood out to me as a mom of three small kiddos: "Sometimes you need to take care of yourself in order to be able to properly take care of others". Need to remember this😊
A lot of good ideas to simplify. You have a lot of books around. Are you going to reread them? It's not really a sunk cost loss if you give them away, as someone else is going to learn from the books if they're useful. Thank you for sharing your experiences to our benefit. God bless you and your family.
6:15 "everytime you're saying yes to something, you're saying no to something", but ACTUALLY, everytime you say "yes" to something, you are saying "no" to EVERYTHING else
I feel like I’ve come home! Just discovered your channel and a lot of it resonates very easily with me. Some thoughts: - what do you feel when / if people say you’re OCD? I get that a lot just because I have a clean and tidy environment. - The UK seems particularly lazy and dirty these days. I wonder if you find different countries have different standards? - is there a shortage of fun in your videos?! To me, if I run a tight ship, I have more time to muck around with fun stuff. It doesn’t have to be earnest. - keep it up, I’m subscribed 👍 😊
I try so hard to get rid of the things I don't use... and everytime I throw or donate something I inmediately need it or think about it... Once I purchased 6 phone stands for my friends, but the bases were really lightweight. I considered using coins to weigh them down, but unfortunately, I had already discarded them 😢
Totally random: LOVED this episode and a new sub. Question…. That white/gray couch !! @8:17 in front of the brick wall…What is it and where do I get it! I have “decluttered” 3 couches in the last 7 yrs, just weren’t comfortable and have the look I want . I currently have a beautiful one but NEVER use it because it is horribly uncomfortable. Please answer this essential life changing question ! Binging your content today . I’ve have definitely missed more than 2 days, and my home is showing it. Thank you.
What do I do if lots of things in my house do not have a home, but I don't have the time to make homes for it all? And I don't have that much storage space.
I used to live almost exactly this way before I got a roommate and then a girlfriend and then a wife. It slowly degraded because it's really hard to do this when no one else is doing it. Now I live with my wife and 10 month old daughter. I keep trying to get back to this but it feels impossible because my wife considers these sorts of habits actively destroying who she is as a person. It's really frustrating. Do you have any tips on convincing someone to participate?
What rules did I miss?

Never put off tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.
“Love tomorrow more than you hate today”

And if you generalize the reasons that it works, it makes sense that it would work pretty well for other goals unrelated to fitness.
loving the recent minimalism content! well, love all your content!
Glad you enjoy it!
If you don’t want to wear all black, on Sunday just have your clothes laid out for the week. I usually have my clothes on hangers in order in the closet, underwear socks laid out and pants. Same for the kids. I’m an ocd dad
Love the ocd lol but whatever works! It’s good to have a system
I look at like weeding out my house like weeding the garden to keep things manageable.
16:07 “Live life by design, not by default”. Powerful.
i only need about 10 rules nowadays. dont worry, youll get there soon bud
Hey, don’t agree with you politically or view wise, but your minimalism videos have always grounded me, thanks for sticking true to your core message. 💙
I am working on getting rid of stuff and organizing. Thanks for being my leader in this area.
Glad I can help!
Your minimalism videos are always so substantive!
You either invest in the store or you invest in the doctors so buy the healthiest food!
I REALLY NEEDED THIS VIDEO HAD KNEE INJURY AND EVERY THING WENT DOWN HILL-------I'LL GET STARTED AGAIN...
Patty, my knee injury really changed my life. Everything is a challenge now. Hang in there.
Would love if you could do a video about how to start investing for kids. What should we be teaching them in this regard?
@15:17 as someone with depression, breaking the mold of the mental illness assumption isn’t that easy. I try to tell myself it’s okay to live my own way, but mental health and living a certain way for so long proves a challenge
I REALLY NEED THIS VIDEO-- HAD KNEE INJURY, AND EVERY THING WENT DOWN HILL. THANKS SO MUCH
Glad it could help!
" A loving friend slapping you across the face" im all For it! 😂
And don’t put it down… put it away… if we all do it 🤦🏼♀️👍🏻‼️
Got that on knowing 27 people ..this is a thought on being part of minimalism especially knowing the value on what you allow to be close to you for a healthier and minimalistic life.
I've got a "6 month rule" : Every 6 months I go through all the stuff I have stored away in boxes / closets / (basement / attic -- if I had a basement / attic) And ask myself
"Have I needed / used this at all in the last 60mo?" -- if "NO" then ask "Is this something I am LIKELY to need in the next 6mo?" -- if "NO" then I get rid of it.
Everything popular is wrong, i love this one!
THIS is how rich people should act!! 😮 Not buying more and more and more houses and cars nobody needs...HELP people instsad!
People should note to abolish owning more than two or three houses
It's amazing how history keeps repeating itself, and the urgency to prepare is definitely real! Investing can be the best decision of your financial life. I started my journey in 2021, and it’s been the best choice I've made for my finances.
What's the best way to begin, and how long until it starts yielding profits?
No matter how long you wait, opportunities will arise in the market. Invest for the long term, and avoid being too greedy or too fearful. Making informed decisions is crucial; relying on luck isn’t enough, so partnering with an advisor is essential.
I hope you don’t mind suggesting your sûpervisor, as you mentioned before
Olivia Charlotte Oswald
She's an amazing professional I’ve had the pleasure of engaging with. You can look her up
book Unveiling Your Hidden Pontential can change your life. Habit must be not outcome based but rather identity based. Stay blessed.
Who is the book written by?
3:40 I see those hardy boy books...classic
Great information and concise!
The only thing I disagree with is that I can have the banana and the peanut butter at the same time, but I understand the concept. 😄
Great video as usual ❤🎉 Great practical advice. Love your videos from Toronto Canada.
I’m in great need to get back to the BOX rule.
I loved giving grand kids horse back riding, fencing and ice skating and curling, also certain art classes and even boat building.
Lots of good advice/reminders coming at a time when I need to embrace it.
Excellent information I will be watching this again and again. Thanks you. Karen
I kinda already live this way. It works. Good job on the video.
I applied the 20/20 rule when decluttering my kitchen. I got rid of six bins of stuff to the thrift store. I replaced one item.
Great video Gabe. I needed to be reminded of many of these ideas. I have been a little sloppy Thank you.
Is nice when kids grow in minimalism❤
Great advices, I need to stop after a few minutes, too fast, too much, need more peace of mind to listening to this complete video. Thank you for your work and intention.
Thank you! Steve Jobs wore all black turtleneck shirts.
As a father of a young child I feel this too. 90% of these rules are not applicable anymore.
I live in his universe😅 I would totally go insane if I didn’t apply a good amount of these rules. As a working mom of young kids it keeps me on track and not overwhelmed with all the things you sum up.
Not about how much we can live with,
but how much we can live without.
Great post! Wil have to rewatch this again…and again. ❤
I swear there's a fraction rule for everything. The 1/99 rule. The 2/98 rule. The 3/97 rule. And so on 😅
Good thoughts, simpler the better.
Need to remember this😊
The “oxygen mask” method.
Loved these tips Gabe, especially the 2/3 day rule! Thank you!
Thank you! I got 1 minute in, stopped the video and practiced my guitar after 2 days off. LOL Definitely coming back for the rest of the tips.
With all those bottles on the background in his kitchen- hehe there is no way this lad is for real following minimalistic life style 😁🙈
I saw a collection of Hardy Boys books on your shelf! I have the same cherished stack. F.W. Dixon was a Canadian. (Like me)
My boat is named Sleuth.
This is great. Thanks for posting
A lot of good ideas to simplify. You have a lot of books around. Are you going to reread them? It's not really a sunk cost loss if you give them away, as someone else is going to learn from the books if they're useful. Thank you for sharing your experiences to our benefit. God bless you and your family.
Healthfullness is a pretty good word for it Gabe!
You keep talking about tiny little small things. Have you read the book Atomic Habits!? It really breaks it down to the tiniest task.
6:15 "everytime you're saying yes to something, you're saying no to something", but ACTUALLY, everytime you say "yes" to something, you are saying "no" to EVERYTHING else
100%
Gabe , great video!
This seems like way more work then just going about my day
I feel like I’ve come home! Just discovered your channel and a lot of it resonates very easily with me.
Some thoughts:
- what do you feel when / if people say you’re OCD?
I considered using coins to weigh them down, but unfortunately, I had already discarded them 😢
Great advice and awesome content! Subscribed ! ❤
Great video, great advice...thank you sir.
Could be there are to many things
This is a great video! Thank you for posting.
If I don't hear my inner dialogue say I love it, then I don't buy it. If it's just that's cute or it's pretty good, it's a no.
Every time i start to fall off, your videos motivate me.
Great content! Encouraged me to turn off my tablet. Sorry, it was during this show!
4:25 that one homeless guy: 😡
Brilliant as always 💚 always informative
We have similar Libre tastes, I hear so much praise for Intense, but the original is my fave, followed by Le Parfum.
