  • I solemnly swear to never caffeinate before a video again, sorry guys! I already talk fast as it is but wow. Hopefully that means I just got to fit in more content haha. This video is some of the major things I stopped spending money and space on with a few tips and tricks sneaked in, let me know down below if any of these suggestions are new to you! As always all of these things are a work in process and I don’t claim any minimalist perfection or that this is how it has to be done. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the request you guys and the views on this video is getting WILD. I appreciate the love and positivity!!!
    MY DEFINITION OF MINIMALISM:
For my current lifestyle, it’s to only own things I love and need + have everything I own fit in my car (minus my couch and mattress) so I can move easily.
FAQ: I buy toliet paper four at a time, the pillows also are for my bed, I love art and tattoos so even if they're not minimal I want a few things I love on display.

here’s what people are misinformed about in these comments: being a minimalist isn’t about having a completely empty home, it’s about only having things that truly add value to your life.

Your interpretation is wrong. Minimalism is about having the bare essentials, the minimum necessary. Like 1 t-shirt, because who needs two t-shirts, just enjoy the one t-shirt until it's dead, then buy a new one. This girl thinking that not buying tons of jewelry makes her a minimalist, which is just bullshit.

Alec Lewis your on the right track! I always thought it was about being simplistic, clean, light & organized. Some people mix it up with going green! Not using plastics etc.. I keep hearing a lot of “hipster” talk when related to this topic. I honestly labeled myself a “minimalist” before I even used the term, if that makes since. I just never wanted to be responsible of a bunch of junk, bulky useless shit & of course being clean & organized.

one thing I started doing to help stop impulse buys:
I used to get $13 an hour (I'm only sixteen) so when I'd splurge at the shops and grab all these unnecessary items, i would ask myself "would i really spend (however many hours) out of my day working if it just meant that I'd get to have this" or if i accumulated $40 worth of impulse buys (for only 3 or 4 items) in my cart - I'd ask myself "would I really do a 3 hour shift but not earn money for it, earn these items instead?".
I hope i'm making sense bc i'm not the greatest at explaining things but yeah. that's the gist of it

That is a wise way of handling finances that will serve you well as you get older. If you view your purchases that way, as if you’re working and putting in time for those specific items, it will help you make smart decisions and only bring things home that you’re genuinely happy to have.

As far as purchases I live by this. I won't buy a new pair of shoes if I don't need them. I won't buy any clothes unless I love them. But it doesn't have to satisfy need, use and love. Like I of course have to use it, but I can love it and not need it and will still buy it. I'm bot minimalist I just think a lot more people should spend in this way or at least similar. Especially when she said about wanting a casual jacket or specific items. Recently I realised I don't have enough pairs of jeans to satisfy a weeks worth of clean wear so I invested in a new pair and since it's getting cold I wanted a new sweater. These are things I put in a mental list and only picked up when I found items I loved.

True! Also don't go "window shopping" unless you plan to buy something. I try to buy a couple of pants in neutral colors, a black and a tan blazer, 1 leather purse and about 2 pairs of neutral pumps and one pair of white sneskers. As a professional these pieces will go along way. I want to be less of a consumer and more of a giver.

Haha it’s not sad! I think it’s awesome. Small “luxuries” I don’t indulge in are just how I live, it’s not struggling! ie. I don’t buy bottled water or any type of packaged “drink” for my fridge!
I keep a Brita pitcher in the fridge and when I feel like a flavored drink I’ll add a crystal light packet! (Or Hawaiian Punch or whatever) 80-90% of the drinks I consume are just water! No pre-packaged drinks, wasting money on flavored juices, etc.
Small but I save lots of money on not buying drinks consistently! (Plus, once your body is used to water everything else tastes like syrup) 🤗🤗😋

I think most Americans try and justify their spending and some of their purchases, myself included. it is so easy to tell myself, yeah, I can use another pair of pants, another shirt that is on sale, a new make-up that sounds great, but in reality do I really need this?! I plead guilty to this most of the time that I shop! I think it is partly due to our consumeristic society. And well, oh if it's a cheap price, why not?! But then I have to look in my closet near the bathroom, and become all too aware of unnecessary purchases. so, I will try and implement alot of your ideas and suggestions here. I know and realize its different for each person, but I will try and do my part. I think it helps so much, when your spouse or household is on board.

I used to be a minimalist, then we had a child and now my life is full of brightly coloured plastic shite. On a serious note, I think a lot of people could learn from this. One thing I do is to keep cell phones until they are broken beyond repair. Cell phones contain conflict materials and the need to have an iPhone 12 not an iPhone 11 (or whatever) is fuelling that.

This is my second time viewing your content, just finished the hoarder childhood video as well.
People are being vile in the comments here so I just want to tell you, in case you still read these, that I completely understand the fact that these things aren't just "standard money spending tips." Growing up in poverty with people who constantly feel the need to buy new (crappy!) things and get their nails done every two weeks despite not being able to afford rent.. it's EXTREMELY difficult to break out of that cycle! The commenters here are speaking at you from a place of such privilege. Having the opportunity to learn that the way of life we have grown up in is NOT the answer is not easy to come by. We have to search for it like a blind person searching for something based on color - we do not even know what the thing we need to know looks like. And then Learning it on our own is only the first step, too. Then you have to have the confidence to implement it in your life and be completely misunderstood by family who you love but they 'just don't get you.'
SIGH. Anyway. Do your thing, girl. New subscriber here.

I do this often. I actually have clothes shoes makeup and wigs for my fantasy self.
She is a girl who travels a lot and has special (themed) clothes for each place like she has sequin outfits for Vegas and all white clothes for a cruise etc.
When in reality I hate traveling. I'm a homebody who only vacations at a quiet beach and prefers to wear black.

I'm getting so sick and tired of having "stuff" especially when it is stuff that has to be dusted. Some "decor" is so unnecessary and doesn't just clutter your home but your mind. A lot of excess buying comes from being bored or unhappy. When you get the urge to buy, distract yourself by doing something creative or constructive. Ask yourself "Do I need it or do I want it". The internet has made it so easy to buy stuff as opposed to when you had no choice but to go to an actual store. I would have so much more money in the bank if I had to schlepp to a store for everything like before 2000. It's convenient for grocery deliveries and I find having groceries delivered cuts out a lot of impulse buying. That's a positive for me. No food staring me in the face like in a store but just pictures of food on a screen is way better. The only thing will not cut down on is buying household products on sale because they don't expire and I do a lot of laundry. I won't even get into my walk in closet situation...UGH.

Yes i'm definitely interested in a convo on minimalism while being broke. It's one of those things that (i think) is super difficult to do when you're really broke. Mainly bc you don't have the means to save up for an expensive purchase that will last you for years rather than a cheap purchase that will break sooner than later. But I think another aspect of it is also unlearning the habit of looking to buy as cheap as possible thinking it's saving money vs. buying things as investment items.

You should try looking into zero waste lifestyle tips. The first I can think of right off my mind is using cloth napkins (super cheap to buy or stupidly cheap to diy some). Eliminating plastic from your life is very refreshing, easy and CHEAP.

    • @JanellKristina
      @JanellKristina  5 лет назад +18

Quality isn't always more expensive! I use to shop at old navy end of year sales + coupons and actually look at the clothes that wanted to buy. If I felt like it was to fall apart quickly I skipped over it. I've found a lot of "higher quality" brands are super delicate and require special handling and that's not minimal for me. A fleece jacket from from Walmart (which isn't even that cheap anymore) serves the same functional purpose for warmth as a north face once and can last just as long. I don't want to comment to get super long but I will definitely make a video on this!

    • @sabineottala3588
      @sabineottala3588 5 лет назад

wldlvndr, I can definitely identify with your point. Depending on the item, you might be able to collaborate with friends/family to save money and reduce waste and duplication on your purchases. Eg there are plenty of household items that we don't need to own individually - if you agree with a neighbour that you will buy a slow cooker together, you can get a decent one and each take turns to use it for some bulk cooking each week, while you both save up either to buy a second cooker so you each have one, or something else to share. That way you both save money on electricity and ingredients, you can make healthy food, and you avoid the waste of each buying a crappy machine that will break and need to be replaced.
It can also work on an entire neighbourhood level, eg with gardening/DIY equipment, or you can buddy up with a group, like circulating baby toys/book around all the parents in your prenatal class.
Those examples might not apply to you, but if you can find similar ways to reduce your consumption, it might allow you to use that money on better-quality long-term purchases that you need.

Sure it’s not “minimalists” but for dish soap/toilet paper/body soap/paper towels/over the counter medicine I absolutely know buying in bulk saves money. Like I bought a years worth of allergy medicine I take everyday from Costco for $30 instead of a months supply which is $15. Saved a lot of money that way.

She didn't say she was a thrifty spender. Minimalism is a reduction in acquiring things, and that is what she is trying to do, acquire less things. So bulk things are multiples to save money, but you end up with more things. If your main target is to save money, yes you should buy in bulk.

Janell I hope you read this, I just wanted to say watching your videos changed my outlook on buying and owning items. I had always admired those that live a zero waste lifestyle but I knew that was impossible for me. I had always thought minimalism was just a tumblr aesthetic of sorts and a bit pretentious- however when you explained why you chose this lifestyle, I felt myself really relating to having similar problems. I have always loved clothing as a child and that became a big part of me expressing myself... at least I thought. I realized that I mainly bought clothes to relieve stress and never wore items as much as I believed I did. I also came from a poor background where buying things in bulk for a “good deal” and accepting hand me downs was normal, even when I didn’t need or want the items. There is definitely an idea about consuming that circulates for people from poor income backgrounds that I never thought bothered me until now. Everyone in my family keeps things they don’t need and while they aren’t hoarders they definitely waste their money and storage/ living space on things that just clutter. I was doing the same thing and I wanted to stop this cycle once and for all with me. Right now I am purging- only after four days of discovering your channel. Your videos are fun and calming to watch at the same time; which I appreciate so much (that takes talent in my eyes!). I can’t wait for what you make next. :)

Why is everyone commenting on the tattoos? That's body art. And you can take it everywhere and it takes up no space. I'd say that's minimalist. Plus it doesn't even count.

I would actually recommend looking into a Fitbit! You mentioned you’re looking for a watch you like, and that’s what I primarily use mine for. But it also reminds me to eat, walk around, and meditate, but it doesn’t bother me with text messages or social media or anything. I bought two bands that I switch between and it’s the perfect way for me to look “put together” but not to have to actually own any jewelry.
Also with souvenirs/ art: I started buying only postcards as souvenirs. I can hang them up as art, or keep them in a book I travel around with to write down all my adventures.

Seriously? You need an electronic device to remind you to eat, walk around and meditate? People are getting way too influenced by gadgets, or should I say the companies that make you think you need these gadgets but really just want your money. We are born with a physical sensation that causes us to eat...it's a rumbling stomach. If you need to walk or meditate, just go do it. Your life is way to complicated if you need a gadget to remind you to do these things. Try getting more in touch with your natural innate self/needs. So many people are losing touch especially with eating issues; eating out of boredom, anxiety, or just because it's time to eat, not considering if they are actually physically hungry.

Style is more about choosing and putting together things. And looking good has more to do with taking good care of yourself.

The only true parallel is the limited number of quality items, so I guess that results in a similar aesthetic. However, if you really examine them people living a minimalist lifestyle choose specific items that they personally find add value. Perhaps minimalism lends a hand to better overall style.
