I forgot to say in the video but make sure to 'get rid' of your things responsibly. Most things can be recycled, sold, repurposed or passed on before throwing it in the bin/trash. It is important to declutter responsibly :)
Thanks for this additional note. It is really important. I am a fan of minimalism but I also like zero waste, so from this point of view I feel that you should think twice before you get rid of something if you will not buy something similar very soon.

@@ROGSYT Why?! I keep my toys, teddies and childhood clothing for when i get kids. What a waste to throw them away and in 10 years rebuy everything 😒 And telling people they are mental for keeping sentimental stuff is really dumb.
@@woolypuffin392 right ? I have a really important toy it's a dogo. When you press him he talks. It probably was pretty expensive.it was present for my 1 year bday. My step sister gived it too me. But now she lives in other country who is really far away. We haven't talk like since I was 3 I think. I'm 11 now.
Instead of throwing away multiples, just use them before you buy anything new! I went through my makeup and saw that I had SO MANY palettes that are really the same colors. Instead of throwing them away, I am going to stop buying makeup and finish everything that I have and then reward myself with one palette that I know I will use all the time. It’s more rewarding to use everything that you have instead of letting things go to waste
Same..I literally have so much makeup...I don't have to buy any for a very long time..I haven't even hit pan on any of them..I have maybe 25 pallets... i'm a sucker for sales and limited makeup...I told myself.. i'm not buying anymore makeup until 2019..
Oliver Legrand depends on the product. Generally you can say, powdery stuff lasts way longer than liquid stuff. I don't go by the date that's printed on, I smell and look at the product, maybe swatch it to see if it has changed in any way.
Paris75 Some people are poor paris. What you think would be clutter would be life changing for other people. There's nothing wrong with bringing joy to people's hearts.
I will be 60 this month & i'm working my way through a serious decluttering process, however i still have my first teddy that my dad bought me as a baby, i will keep him forever.
Yes, many have junk drawers and cupboards,I have more than one of somethings and if they were from a family or friends so i would not get rid of them for that reason as I value the items. Personally I think at least two sets of sheets and 3 sets of towels per person to rotate, and hygiene reasons .Hangers break all the time.-mine do-Just donate or pass on things you feel you won't need, don't use or like and are taking up space, learn new habits break compulsion shopping. bulk buying, bored or curious shopping-where unnecessary things are bought-. consciously break the habits you had before mindfulness or conscious shopping only.
You mean she doesn't blabber on about how important it is to ethically donate, recycle or reuse old items instead of the passive message of 'get rid of'? Yeah, definitely not much there. It's disappointing, not perfect. Most people who will see this video aren't eco-conscious, so they will take the 'get rid of' literally and send things to landfill, which is an irresponsible message.
Yeah, I get what you mean. Don't worry, whenever I 'get rid of' something, the last place I'll think of is the bin. It's great when you can find another use for something, and donating things like clothes is much better than chucking them in a bin.
she is fast n mentioning only the list of things to get rid of because she is not explaining properly or even have any suggestions on using things mindfully.. am first time in this channel n dnt know about her but i no way liked the video coz she is interested in more of emptying the house ruthlessly without thinking of money, emotions sentiments or even the nature or those in need!!!
Subscriptions to ads, newsletters, blogs etc. Some are fine but we get enough ads and getting those weekly "deals" just entices us to buy more "things" which does not support a minimalist life.
There is definitely merit to living a simple, clutter-free life, but PLEASE don't be wasteful. If you already own things that can be reused or used up, then please use them instead of throwing them out. It just contributes to landfills otherwise. But being more conscious of what you buy in the future is definitely important too! (If you already said all this and I missed it, then nevermind haha. Just thought I'd add it if you hadn't already :))
sofglows yeah the idea of throwing out multiples/spares or broken items that are fixable made me pause. There’s a difference between decluttering things you don’t need and tossing out items you could use in the future. Also with items like dvds u can store hundreds of then in a dvd binder. Some of these tips are good but others seem to be about getting rid of things for the sake of getting rid of it.
I got rid of 70% of my books and regret it. That is one collection I want to rebuild but I will definitely follow the rest of your tips! I have gotten rid of so much in the past year and I'm finally ready to let go of more. :)
Maybe you could rebuild them as a virtual collection? Or are you the type of person who just needs a physical copy? I've gotten rid of the physical copies of all my books except for my favorite series and my text books. The ones I let go but really liked a made a list of so I could buy them on kindle later if I wanted them again.
I really need the physical copy. I have even gotten a 2018 planner because I'm tired of reminders popping up on my phone all the time...and a fitness planner...lol I have tried eBooks and Audiobooks and they're just not my thing. I do see the value in that, for those who like those options. :)
There are some things like books I really want to collect. But I think there is a difference between stuff that’s just getting more and more over the years and actively collecting something for your joy. So I think i you want to you should keep and buy new books❤️
It was horrible. Why did I do that? haha Seriously, my books look like they've never been read. I treat them the same way you do. I've bought 7 new ones in the past week or so. It'll be a great collection! :)
I do keep anything handwritten like cards, notebooks and letters. They go into a box and to the basement. Seems like a waster of space, but they really don't take up much. As a paper conservator I can't even tell you how valueable those things are for future people and historians.
I like when minimalism is paired with low-waste. I try to compost, donate, give things away for free, upcycle what I can! And moving forward I want to be more intentional about what I really need and what will eventually just be junk. Great vid!
My mom had over 150 cook books stashed away in our storage room. I went through all of them and cut out all the recipes I wanted and all the ones i thought she would like and recycled the rest. Now I have a book full of recipes for when I move and and our bookshelf is no longer overflowing
I'm planing on having all my sentimental T-shirts made into a nice big quilt once I'm done with uni. I'll get to save all of them and have a quilt that fits a bed larger than a dorm bed. :)
Boo! Don't get rid of your childhood teddies and cards in the name of minimalism. You define your own minimalist mindset, if you're getting rid of things you have a strong emotional attachment to because someone told you it's the minimalist thing to do then you're probably going to regret it. To de-clutter things like old cards (perhaps like me, the last Christmas card you received from a late family member), you can try including them in a memories scrapbook, or framed, or any other creative idea to organise it. I disagree with the book one too. I have many irreplaceable books, that though I might need them only on rare occasions, serve as a body of material to reference. Books I may not 'read' front to back, but refresh my memory on a particular note. out-of-print books by politicians, historians, etc. usually there is no version available on the internet, nor is that necessarily the best way to find what I need.
Pix You really have no right to assume which of my possessions are clutter. But this is the problem I'm trying to highlight. So many people are trying to live up to somebody else's standards because they've been told they aren't practicing "real" minimalism. That's what sounds stressful to me. You can't get sentimental possessions back - and it's cruel to cajole someone you don't know into letting go of things they may not be ready to. You won't have to deal with any resulting anguish - they will.
So why exactly are you watching this video then? Also, don’t take everything so personally. If you were being honest, most things we own are clutter.

Pix I'm a literature student, you'll pry those books from my cold dead hands. I have two bookcases worth and I cherish them. Minimalism is about keeping what's essential. My books are essential.
Kai Thompson you don't have to be a minimalist. Yes getting rid of some things is hard but then you can move the on with your life instead of trying to find an old book, you can just remember that parts of the book you like or enjoy it in the moment. Or maybe ebooks because I agree. Books are something you can open again and again. Personally I went the audiobook route and keep books that are practical and help me make progress on things like a future tiny house, a book about toxins and I have a book for curating my closet because I struggle with it more than most people
Kai Thompson: I agree. Two things I deeply regret tossing are a Little Golden Book from my childhood, and a faux-stone cat, a souvenir from a family trip. They took up so little space and I can’t replace them.
Just a reminder that out of date food doesn't have to go to waste - if it looks and smells alright it's fine most of the time, especially if it's vegan. Canned and other long-lasting foods can be given to local charity, even if they're of of date! I've actually just decluttered books. They are indeed the tricky ones! Very comprehensive guide! I'm getting rid of everything that won't fit into my tiny house I'm moving into this year. Glad I have been a minimalist for a while, this definitely makes things easier.
Maybe it depends on the country. In Germany the most common local charity organisation takes canned foods which are beyond the 'best before' date (not the 'use by' date, however, as with meat for example). They get most of their supply by supermarkets which throw out foods which are past the date.
Canada won't take food past the expiration date, and in reference to the cuddly toys, hospitals or shelters will not take toys (not even if they are newly purchased) because of risk of communicable diseases. Donate items to charity thrift stores if you're in Canada.
Nessa Goes Wild l won't go grocery shopping until everything is eaten. saves money and makes me want to tell my mother sorry for wasting so much food as a child😊
Food banks won't and can't accept out of date food. If you won't eat it what makes you think people needing a hand deserve to. My ex won't give me all my personal belongings even after nearly 3years and to be honest my personal belongings give me and my son's happiness not my ex. Some of it may sound like clutter to minimalists but it's what I used for myself and my son's. No one should decide what is rubbish or clutter for others, if it brings you happiness and you use it it's not clutter
Great tips!! I'm possibly moving abroad later this year - I've managed to declutter heaps of clothes just by asking myself "would I bring this thousands of miles away and make room in my suitcase for it".. usually the answer is no! ..However my stuffed toy bunny collection is very special! 😅
I agree with most of this! I'm currently going through my things to see if something needs to go, but I don't think you should get rid of things just for the sake of it. It's okay to collect things like movies, books, bags etc. if that makes you happy, same with the teddy bears. I still have a bunch of mine because they mean something to me. Be a minimalist on your own terms!
I would recommend keeping your samples with travel stuff - samples are great for short trips because they're small and once you use the sample, you'll have more space in your luggage for the trip back!
Rina G yeah my dad travels a lot and used to bring with him shampoo and soap and toiletries but now just uses the little samples from the last hotel he's been in.
Yup, and I like to keep sample containers if I use the larger product so I can refill them and not have to worry about not having it or having to buy a different container.
Hey hun, love the video but just wanted to point out that a children's hospital probably wouldn't be able to take cuddly toys! Due to infection risks (not just from you but between children) they can only have brand new toys or plastic toys that can be sanitised. Charity shops would be grateful for them though :)
And refugee ministries like to be able to provide 1 to each child newly in our country, if in decent shape. Others, if small & like new, could be put in Operation Christmas Child boxes!
#13 man, I WISH someone *would* gift me a waffle maker!!!😩 also, super appreciate how this girl understands that the right mug DOES make the tea taste better!!!🙌🏻🤗☕️
Great video. Also getting rid of stuff from a hobby you stopped pursuing is a good idea. If you havent taken it back up for a long time you probably wont again, unless there was a specific reason why.
Please don't shame me about my cuddly toy collection!!! But in all seriosuness, definitely going to have another declutter when I get a spare minute - you've really inspired me!
TheUglyBookling Haha I still have the three little guys featured in this video! But I used to have soooooo many more 🐶🐱🐰 So Happy this has inspired you to do another declutter 🙌🏻
Thanks, that's helpful! Just one thing I would disagree on: getting rid of appliance manuals, takeaway menus, etc. because the ecological footprint of looking for it online each time you need to consult them is much higher than keeping a printed copy at home. Same for DVDs and CDs: if you can still use them, it's much better than watching a movie online. Never put old batteries or phones in the garbage. Bring them to a shop that have a dedicated recycling bin or to a waste recycling center
Yeah, the amount of times I need to look something up on the internet for an appliance or menu is like really small same with looking at a paper manual and menu, heck most manuals and menus disappear as it is and you never remember where you put them half the time. Find them when you don't need them and lose them again. Why waste physical space and paper that can be recycled for something that you will most likely never look at or use again? That is dumb. I highly doubt my ecological footprint is going to get that much worse when I am already using the internent all the time. Same with DVDs and CDs for the most part they just take space up and are very rarely used. I also don't want to spend thousands of dollars each time I want to watch a movie or listen to music. Nope, online I go. I would rather make my ecological footprint larger by using the internet for things that I rarely use than wasting space and money for items that are very rarely used.
Awesome video! Great ideas! My husband and I recently decluttered our entire apartment and got rid of a good 50-60 % of what we own from furniture to books to cards and old toys from childhood. We did however keep our mug collection (about 10 mugs or so), that we rotate through everyday, though as soon as one chips or cracks out it goes!
I am 52 years old and live in Alice Springs ,Australia. I used your cleaning tips and hacks the other day in a presentation .Thankyou for inspiring us all.
Minimalism is not a doctrine, people. The video is just a series of suggestions on what you can consider clearing out. Of course everyone's life is going to be different and what is purposeful for you may not be for someone else. You don't have to take it literally; use your own judgement to see if it is true in your context. And there is no PERFECT minimalist, its just a way of life, to be more present and have clarity about myself and my surroundings.
I love this! One of the biggest things I am getting rid of is meat. It's not an over night transition (this month is beef and most dairy), but I'm happy I'm finally committing to it. You've been a big inspiration for this and for minimalism in my life, so thank you!!
A vegan diet, is cheaper by default, than a traditional diet, because vegans don't buy meat,, dairy or egg products. A vegan diet, with processed faux animal like replicas, can be expensive, but not a Whole Foods Plant based diet, of plant based foods, in their natural state like nuts,, seeds, grain, fruit & vegetables. I know two people eating a traditional diet, and they eat animal based products, for 2 people EVERY meal, milk & cereal nearly every day, deli meat & cheese every lunch, and some dead body part for dinner every night. That works out to 8 gallons of milk a month, x 12 months = 48 gallons of milk a year! Plus a near constant hoard of meat, and cheese. Think about it, to feed 2 people deli meat and cheese every day, for 30 days, is 60 servings a month, PLUS another 60 servings of meat for dinner, every day, for a month. Then besides that, they buy, yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream, whipped cream, butter, ice cream, etc. That has to to cost a massive amount of money, and take up tons of space. It's also, a ton of packaging, that will end up in landfills. Humans only need 45 GRAMS of protein a day, from all food sources containing. it. Vegans, get most of their protein, from seeds, beans, chickpeas, nuts, grains, sunflower, sesame & pumpkin seeds, and omegas from flax seeds, etc, which can usually be kept in dry storage, so they need to use less freezer, and refrigerator space. That leaves more room in the freezer, to freeze the perishables they do eat, to prevent food spoilage and waste..
Madeleine Olivia Lmao for the card thing.. I recycled one my bsf gave me 2 years ago! It was a joke, But if your serious about it use white out. I might start doing that because Everybody sees a cat and buys it.
me too, then she will buy a new dress and will have to buy a full pack of new hangers, use just one of them and through away others. Never seen that they would sell hangers not in a pack of a few.
Thank you for creating this video! A lot of great item ideas and quick and to the point. Just started minimalism a week ago and it has been amazing so far and I have donated 3 bags of clothes and shoes.
No stress, no fuss and no regrets: Collect all the stuff you think you might want to donate in a large shopperbag, let it sit for two weeks to see if you change your mind about anything, then get so annoyed by the bag in your house that you bring it to a thriftshop or recycle shop.
I decluttered yesterday and had 4 full trash bags of junk and 3 full trash bags of clothing that I will donate ! It felt so good, and I think I can do another round soon ! It was my 2018 resolution, and watching this today made me want to get in again ! x
um wtf, one set of bed linens? and one towel for oneself?? do you use your washing machine everyday? and how small is it? how does that work?? sometimes my last bed linen sit in the laundry basket for 2 months until I have collected enough to wash them. sorry but that point is ridiculous, sometimes I wish I had even more towels,
You do laundry once a week. Sheets use them for a week. It not one towel but a towel set per person. On top of that you have the hand towels in th bathroom and kitche. Towels and bed linenes is one load right their. I think you might be a bit ridiculous that you can go 2 months without washing. You don't and shouldn't cram your washing machine witha lot since it won't get cleaned.
For me my bedsheets and Towels are a full washing machine (they're only supposed to be 3/4 full anyway), and they take a day and a night to dry (on a clothes horse). So 3 sets for me is good, so I always have one that's in use, one that's in the laundry or drying and one in case I need to change my sheets while the others ones aren't ready for use (like in case I get sick or something).
Works perfectly! And it already got me to declutter again. I guess I will watch this more than once over the next weeks 😂 thank you for being the kind little „throw it away you don’t need it“ voice whenever I start to declutter!
We always keep old socks in case the dog have a little injury in the paw. So you can put it over the bandage for protection. Happens maybe once in 5 years, but it will use them up as he destroys them (at least it takes him longer to get rid of the bandage...)
i never understood why people have odd socks from the start, how can you loose them? you put them together in the laundry, you put them together in to the drawer, how is it possible to loose just one? Never happened to me
Actually I'm getting sick and tired of constantly having to find the other pair for my socks. So I plan to buy a nice set of 6 or more pairs of the exact same color and type. No more worrying over missing pairs or scrounging around for the other. They'll all be the exact same, heh.
1. clothes you don't wear or don't fit 2. old gadgets 3. old make up and toiletries 4. multiples (eg. if you have give bottle openers, keep one) 5. bags you don't use 6. shoes that don't fit 7. out of date food 8. broken items/things you plan to fix 9. tupperwear 10. things you don't know the purpose of 11. odd socks 12. old paper and documents 13. kitchen appliances that you don't use 14. duplicate kitchen items (eg. multiple can openers) 15. store loyalty cards that you don't use 16. books you haven't read or won't read again 17. spare bed linen and towels 18. pens that don't work 19. old CDs and DVDs 20. email subscriptions 21. odd or ill fitting bras 22. extra make up brushes 23. gifts you don't use or like 24. old mugs 25. old magazines 26. old fancy dress costumes 27. samples 28. old cuddly toys 29. used notebooks 30. candles 31. household deco that you don't like or have an attachment to 32. extra cushions 33. old games 34. dead plants 35. old glasses - drinking glasses 36. jewellery that you don't wear 37. cables and wires 38. old or dead batteries 39. old phones 40. extra hangers 41. junk drawers - put in place that et belong 42. take out menus 43. appliance manuals 44. cookbooks 45. shopping bags 46. furniture that doesn't fit or that you don't like 47. old pj's or shirts 48. unhung posters 49. old cards 50. negative mindset
Loved this list and the execution- quick, clear, and to the point! I’m excited to keep rooting out the extra stuff I have...the hardest part is getting rid of it without having a car (this was my first step in minimalizing!).
Simple and sweet, getting to the point without unnecessary talk. That's how I like IT. I always try to "squeeze" the most out of things. Older T-shirts I wear when I clean the house or as a pajama top
I've recently been embracing minimalism and it's helped me SO much to clear out the extra clutter in my life and in my mind. It's such a great lifestyle change, one that really has turned my life around ❤️
it worked last time too for me. I have a problem with nice clothes I own but don't wear.. "what if I'll need it?" 😅 it's tough! also books, I only give away the books I don't like, but keeping the rest, they're like part of the furniture for me. 💚
veganveve You can try the trick where if anything is a maybe and you don’t really wear it, put it in a box in a cupboard and set yourself a limit, say 1 month or 6 months. If you haven’t reached for it in that time then you haven’t worn it and so don’t need it! Time to donate 👚👗👖
My brother had a super good idea for souvenirs! Get Christmas decorations! They're something that you can bring out each year, have those lovely memories, and then they get put away. Or spend extra money and get some art if you can afford it
Done with nearly all of it, really, as an iterative process: Distinguish ‘Want’ from ‘Need’. Clean diet Clean space Clean energy Next: Freedom. Thank you for posting.
Candle clutter, yes! I got a modern, clear glass clean burning oil lamp and it is so much better. Also, I got rid of my ironing board. Now I put a towel on my rectangular glass-topped kitchen table and it works great!
Kindergartens, schools and libraries use old greeting cards, especially Christmas cards for childrens activities. Just cut off the half with writing and give them the pictures. I have also cut cards down to make gift tags. Don’t forget too that veterinary surgeries love donations of old towels and blankets.
Great list! I have strong "pack rat" tendencies that I want to eliminate or reduce. This past week I FINALLY threw away some old hair products I knew I wasn't going to use and this video made me realize there's many more things I've been hanging on to that I really need to let go. So, thanks to you I will be inspecting all my drawers, boxes cupboards, and bins to purge all the junk.
I thought that my space was becoming cluttered again and that I lost my sense of being “a true minimalist” but watching this I realized I’ve already gotten rid of 95% of the things and I’ve come a long way from when I started his journey!
I don't usually comment but I just wanted to say that I've watched you from day dot and this is one of your best videos yet. Very well put together, thought through and helpful! You've come a long way. Thank you for the motivation to declutter
I have a very hard time getting rid of gifts that I don't use. I donated a few things, and I'm ok with it. Old christmas cards are hard... I even respectfully threw away a wedding invitation along with some old cards. I got rid of older cards that didn't say much and kept the newer ones, and kept older cards that said things I liked to read. But it's a growing stack! I think as time goes on I will keep doing the same. Keep them, go through them in a few years and respectfully get rid of the ones that seem like a duplicate or didn't say anything beyond merry xmas or happy birthday with no personal message. I also made sure to keep at least 1 card from everyone, even if it didn't say much. As for gifts, it's taken me time, but like I said, I only donated a few things that I was ok with. What helped was I forgot I had them.
Protip- there's apps to keep your rewards cards on your phone, it's helpful so you can recycle them and declutter your wallet! (The one I use is called stocard)
Honestly, at the age of 22, I'm keeping my stuffed animals. I only have a few from childhood, most of them are from more recent years because collecting them brings me joy and I love looking at them. I'm de-cluttering my space, but I'm keeping my shelf of Pusheen lol
So many great suggestions! I have a long way to go, but I just went through my clothing and got rid of a third of it! My closet looks so nice now. Today, I went through old Christmas lights. So many strings that no longer work, or I'll never use. I'm donating the good ones and recycling the bad.
Watched this a few days ago and already started working through my stuff. I've known for a while that my room was cluttered with plenty of hidden mess but didn't feel like sorting it out. Now I'm getting through it and I'm sure once done I'll feel better and maybe better off monetarily with a few bits
Hee hee - why do dads have drawers full of batteries? Mine does too! And I detest wires too - aagh😱 I’m on your wavelength hon - have been gradually doing the minimalist thing gradually over the years - was delighted gated to find people on RUclips like yourself who are of the same mind set... all my family and friends think I’m mad. It’s nice to have people who hate junk and clutter and any unnecessary items in their homes as much as I do.. thank you Madeleine x
ALSO, i highly recommend doing this while you’re young because i’ve noticed it’s a lot harder for my parents and grandparents to get rid of a lot of things now that they’ve collected so many things over the years. I love that i’ve discovered this lifestyle (healthily and not TOO minimal) before i had to time to acquire too much stuff.
I just got rid of: 1.- some fabric that Ive been saying that I´ll use in some proyect but i never did. 2.- Some old dancing costumes 3.- A suitcase and a purse that I liked because they are kind of vintage but not practical at all. Im donating all of it.
I have just had a sort through of all old food and drink and I couldn't believe how much stuff had gone past it's best by date, I feel so cleansed now following the advice you gave in this video, thank you!
Yes 🙌🏽 thank you. I don’t keep much junk anyway but I’m inspired to get rid of more, I’m always downsizing but it’s absolutely time to go through my wardrobe again. My mom is the worst and she is always giving me junky gifts I don’t want 🙄
I have a bag going for odd socks, and every so often I dump it out on my bed and match them up! Normally I’m able to match them all. It’s a good way to avoid wasting good socks :)
Im so happy that I fond your channel! I ve been a shopaholic and its hard to stop. I m working on it and i got rid of so many things the past 2 years.(put everything in charity) I still have problems with impulse buys though...
Thank you Maddie for inspiring me to declutter my things it's taking me awhile to go through everything but I know that I will feel so much better with only the things I use and some that have sentimental value. Your videos have been helping me so much 💗
Hardest thing for me is things I may need one day is a true thing. I love to craft and it relaxes me so I got to keep craft supplies. And I had weight loss surgery and getting ready for my first skin removal surgery so I have to keep the clothes that are a bit smaller. I'm a cross between minimalist and stock piler. Because I don't like clutter however I like preparing for my family
I have a special category of things that I don't use now, but need for special situations. Bicycle, stationary bike, winter clothes. Fair amount of things in this category.
A lot of your suggestions would cost me hundreds of dollars a month. Literally!!! I added it up. If I got rid of even half of the things that you suggested that I get rid of, then when I need them, (which just about everything you listed I do need on at least a monthly basis if not more often), I would have to spend an enormous amount of money to replace those items each time I needed them.
i found this video in a timely manner. i've been working on a major household purge. i've given myself a year to bring our house under control. your tips are some i hadn't thought of.
I may get rid of most anything but all the glasses ive ever had to wear and their cases. Its a chronology of my sight loss and realization of style all in one.
I can’t get enough of decluttering right now... I have given lots of stuff away to a friend who just got her first flat and so many bags and boxes have been donated. I deffo lied to myself by leaving loads of stuff at my parents too - now what I don’t need is all gone and I feel great. :)
I never used to keep cards, I'd have them for a few years then recycle them. I never saw a point in them, like words were enough? This was until my grandpa passed away in June from cancer, he sent me a birthday card (earlier in March) and I cherish that so much. He's not with us anymore but I have his handwriting, to me that means the world. You never know which card or phone call will be the last.
Great video! I guess our bulldog wanted to embrace minimalism...since we got her 2 years ago, she has chewed up every throw pillow. I thought she was just being a normal puppy, but I guess it was a lifestyle choice, lol :)
I personally keep a few DVDs since Netflix occasionally removes some movies from what they offer. This video had a lot of great, original, ideas! Thanks :) Edit: I just remembered, when regifting, be very careful who is the recipient! Keep a list of who gave you what each time you get something, for thank you notes and so awkward moments when regifting don’t happen. For example, If you receive a gift you won’t use from family, regift to a friend. If a friend gives you the gift that you won’t use, don’t regift it to another friend in the same circle, etc. Just a pro tip
Every time I clean out my wardrobe, I always decide to donate it all. Especially to my local thrift store. I personally shop there as well & they have amazing deals & I get some really good clothing items, so I donate my stuff because I enjoy getting clothes from there. :)
Subscribed! This video was the punchy, straight to the point, no bs approach that actually gets me take action! Literally got a dead plant staring at me right now :')
I forgot to say in the video but make sure to 'get rid' of your things responsibly. Most things can be recycled, sold, repurposed or passed on before throwing it in the bin/trash. It is important to declutter responsibly :)
And also don't declutter just so you can buy more things afterwards ;-)
Never!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I can finally watch my favorite’s new video ❤️
Thanks for this additional note. It is really important. I am a fan of minimalism but I also like zero waste, so from this point of view I feel that you should think twice before you get rid of something if you will not buy something similar very soon.
Madeleine Olivia totally. recycle reuse and repurpose all the time.the.best way.

You're a lifesaver!
Your a saint
Thank you! I first marked the ones, were "no action is required" and then I picked 3 for week one
Not all Heros wear capes! Thank you!
I'll be 37 next month and I still have the teddy bear I've had since I was 2 weeks old. He will stay with me until I die!
lesliemichelle that’s awesome! I’m all for keeping one. I think she included it in the list for those who have a whole bunch.
You have some serious emotional attachment, need help
@@ROGSYT Why?! I keep my toys, teddies and childhood clothing for when i get kids. What a waste to throw them away and in 10 years rebuy everything 😒 And telling people they are mental for keeping sentimental stuff is really dumb.
@@woolypuffin392 right ? I have a really important toy it's a dogo. When you press him he talks. It probably was pretty expensive.it was present for my 1 year bday. My step sister gived it too me. But now she lives in other country who is really far away. We haven't talk like since I was 3 I think. I'm 11 now.
keep it if it has sedimental value
Instead of throwing away multiples, just use them before you buy anything new! I went through my makeup and saw that I had SO MANY palettes that are really the same colors. Instead of throwing them away, I am going to stop buying makeup and finish everything that I have and then reward myself with one palette that I know I will use all the time. It’s more rewarding to use everything that you have instead of letting things go to waste
makeup, (like an y other cosmetic, food etc) has a sell by date ... don't put product that is no longer fresh on you skin
See you in 30 years.
I'm affraid for your skin 😦
REMEMBER TO DONATE WHEN YOU CAN !! DONT THROW OUT
Paris75 Some people are poor paris. What you think would be clutter would be life changing for other people. There's nothing wrong with bringing joy to people's hearts.
True, donating them is a better thing to do, rather than just chucking the things that can still be use by someone else.
Donating is also better for the environment. Don’t let your junk become trash that polluted the environment, keep it in a cycle of use!
Paris75 “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” boooooo! Some may need your clutter!!!!!
Bella Jenkins duh 🙄🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
I will be 60 this month & i'm working my way through a serious decluttering process, however i still have my first teddy that my dad bought me as a baby, i will keep him forever.
Good luck and keep going!
Where I live a "junk drawer" is for things you use, like scissors, tape, twist ties, bottle openers, etc. In a convenient place
We always called it the Utility drawer
I'm an accidental minimalist.. I don't have any money to splash out on makeup, clothes and bags 😂
@MeadhbhNi same. and also i don't want to put anything in a landfill
The presentation of this video is perfect!
You get straight to the point, and don't blabber on about it like most people.
Minimalism is so amazing!!!
MagicalMax subscribing for this reason.
I like channel recos too.
Even though she doesn't say the best way to get rid of stuff in the video, she actually pinned her comment talking about how you should recycle etc
she is fast n mentioning only the list of things to get rid of because she is not explaining properly or even have any suggestions on using things mindfully.. am first time in this channel n dnt know about her but i no way liked the video coz she is interested in more of emptying the house ruthlessly without thinking of money, emotions sentiments or even the nature or those in need!!!
getting rid of email subs fueled my soul honestly 100% would recommend
keepyourfeet yes. This one is so tough for me because I accumulate them so quickly! I need to go for another purge.
What are email subs
Subscriptions to ads, newsletters, blogs etc. Some are fine but we get enough ads and getting those weekly "deals" just entices us to buy more "things" which does not support a minimalist life.
I get sm emails from School. Can't control it..
Why just 1 towel? I always keep at least 2 for rotation when one towel is in laundry. Same for bed linen
I mean 1 set of towels (as in one large towel, one medium towel and one hand towel) each so we have six in total haha
Brigita Sob what if you have guests over that shower? or does that not happen for you guys?
why clutter ... if you wash weekly ...
Gross, I use a clean towel almost every time.
Why use a clean towel everday after taking a shower that makes you clean?
She said in the comments that she forgot to mention to get rid of them responsibly. To recycle what you should, and not throw them out.
I disagree about books, notebooks and candles :) it brings me joy to keep them...
Then definitely keep them!!
Hyggeligt!
So I think i you want to you should keep and buy new books❤️
leafgrrl I treat my books like babies. I can’t even think of getting rid of them. It must have been hard.
As a paper conservator I can't even tell you how valueable those things are for future people and historians.
smirbelbirbel I'm an archive conservator and I totally agree with you! 😊
How cool, nice to meet a fellow one! :) If you want to have a look, our study program recently got an instagram account. ;) instagram.com/paper.cons/
smirbelbirbel Thanks for the link, that looks really interesting! 😊
Nessa Goes Wild if you give expired cans to a food charity they have to throw it out and can’t accept it
Maybe it depends on the country.
As for your last question (what are you getting rid of in 2018?), my reply is: my husband. Got a divorce.
2019 for me for the 180lb declutter.
Of course! I always preach this - this is just some ideas. But always do what makes YOU happy. That goes without saying!
And don't get rid of other people's things.
Good point! Charity shop is a great idea 😊
I'm turning 21 and I still sleep with a stuffed animal and I think i always will. Im starting to just be okay with it hahaha.
Kea Lynn Haha don’t worry I still do too! I mainly mean ones you don’t cuddle anymore!
Kea Lynn I'm 32, have a family of my own and I still sleep with my bear. Cuddle proud! 😀❤
Kea Lynn I love sleeping with my teddy bear my husband got me everyday:) i subbed to you hope you can support me back with a sub:)
I am 29 and I sleep with a Pooh Bear! NOTHING wrong with it!
Cha Cha I'm 32 as well and I have a stuffed toys too. I can relate too!!
Gotta appreciate that you made this video move on all the time! No useless explaining of your life or the topics. 😌👌🏻
Out of the hundreds of videos that I’ve seen regarding minimalism, I always keep coming back to you. you’re the best!
Great video. Also getting rid of stuff from a hobby you stopped pursuing is a good idea. If you havent taken it back up for a long time you probably wont again, unless there was a specific reason why.
Madison More ^^^ I subbed! Hope you can support me back with a sub:)
... Fuck, you're right. I'm having an actual epiphany over here. This comment sounds sarcastic but I'm serious!
One of THE BEST RUclips videos!! Straight to the point and completely honest....didn’t sugar coat a damn thing!! Luv it!!
This is amazing! Should have included this in the list!
Great! Congrats!
Yesss! Congrats :-)
Nichole Iversen I read the first two sentences of this and thought you had a freezer full of meat or something😂😂
I agree with mostly everything but I feel as if I can't part with old cards, filled notebooks and cuddly toys 😭
Only part with what you feel ready to part with! Keep what makes you happy 😊
Madeleine Olivia Lmao for the card thing.. I recycled one my bsf gave me 2 years ago! It was a joke, But if your serious about it use white out. I might start doing that because Everybody sees a cat and buys it.
"I used up all my candles to get rid of them!"
Electric goes out
I thought I might like minimalism. Until I found this video. Thanks, you've explained in details why I'm never going to even touch the subject!
😂😂😂
“I don’t know who still uses DVD’s and CD’s. It’s 2018.”
*slowly raises hand*
I don't agree with throwing away extra hangers.
me too, then she will buy a new dress and will have to buy a full pack of new hangers, use just one of them and through away others. Never seen that they would sell hangers not in a pack of a few.
Thank you for creating this video! A lot of great item ideas and quick and to the point. Just started minimalism a week ago and it has been amazing so far and I have donated 3 bags of clothes and shoes.
I started getting rid of everything on your list before I watched your video. So happy to see I’m on the right track!
You don't and shouldn't cram your washing machine witha lot since it won't get cleaned.
exactly! plus then you need a good dryer, I don't have a dryer in my house, and it takes me at least 2 days to dry my bed linens in a winter.
Two is a total minimum, just because if one dries, the other is used. and what if you have a quest coming over?
Works perfectly! And it already got me to declutter again. I guess I will watch this more than once over the next weeks 😂 thank you for being the kind little „throw it away you don’t need it“ voice whenever I start to declutter!
Anni Rotköpfchen Hehehehe
Wear your odd sox, embraces it
Pagan Moon it's a trend or should be.

Loved this list and the execution- quick, clear, and to the point! I’m excited to keep rooting out the extra stuff I have...the hardest part is getting rid of it without having a car (this was my first step in minimalizing!).
Decluttering is a gods send gift , its so satisfying.
Simple and sweet, getting to the point without unnecessary talk. That's how I like IT.
I always try to "squeeze" the most out of things. Older T-shirts I wear when I clean the house or as a pajama top
Love watching how much you’ve grown with your channel and veganism. Inspiring.
Madeleine Olivia yes! I might do that when I switch to the spring/summer wardrobe.
Books and candles I will never get rid of, everything else can go. They just make me happy.
My brother had a super good idea for souvenirs! Get Christmas decorations! They're something that you can bring out each year, have those lovely memories, and then they get put away. Or spend extra money and get some art if you can afford it
Done with nearly all of it, really, as an iterative process:
Distinguish ‘Want’ from ‘Need’.
Clean diet
Clean space
Clean energy
Next: Freedom.
Great Tips Maddie
You can always take a digital photo or a scan of any that are special. :)
Throwing 'away' cards? Like greeting cards? There's no such thing as 'away'. You can recycle them.
+Emillie Moon or make them into gift tags the next year
i keep cards and stuff like that in a memory box
I LOVED the fact that she goes straight to the point, there is no bla bla bla .....
I don't usually comment but I just wanted to say that I've watched you from day dot and this is one of your best videos yet. Very well put together, thought through and helpful! You've come a long way. Thank you for the motivation to declutter
Talk so fast...
Thanks for being minimalist about extra blah, and filling your screen time with lots of good suggestions really fast! Most don't manage this!
Protip- there's apps to keep your rewards cards on your phone, it's helpful so you can recycle them and declutter your wallet! (The one I use is called stocard)
i will keep my old notebooks until the day i die, i always refer back to my old planners, or read through old journals from when i was younger!
I'm always eliminated unused items. Clothes, books, media . Donate for others to enjoy!
And I detest wires too - aagh😱
I’m on your wavelength hon - have been gradually doing the minimalist thing gradually over the years - was delighted gated to find people on RUclips like yourself who are of the same mind set... all my family and friends think I’m mad.
I just got rid of:
1.- some fabric that Ive been saying that I´ll use in some proyect but i never did.
2.- Some old dancing costumes
3.- A suitcase and a purse that I liked because they are kind of vintage but not practical at all.
#34 - "Compost him" LMFAO!
Nakidz this can be traumatic when you talk to your plants 😳🌱🥀
Great video! I guess our bulldog wanted to embrace minimalism...since we got her 2 years ago, she has chewed up every throw pillow. I thought she was just being a normal puppy, but I guess it was a lifestyle choice, lol :)
I personally keep a few DVDs since Netflix occasionally removes some movies from what they offer. This video had a lot of great, original, ideas! Thanks :)
Edit: I just remembered, when regifting, be very careful who is the recipient!
Great tips for the new year!!! You keep helping me, and pushing me further with my minimalist journey, thank you so much
Many charities or hospitals do not accept stuffed toys because they are 'unsanitary'.
I love this video, but you'll need to pry my popcorn maker from my cold dead hands. I make popcorn so much now I'm obsessed lol
If you use your popcorn maker more than I use my frying pan, then I think you're okay keeping it. Haha

Every time I clean out my wardrobe, I always decide to donate it all. Especially to my local thrift store. I personally shop there as well & they have amazing deals & I get some really good clothing items, so I donate my stuff because I enjoy getting clothes from there. :)
you don't need it get rid of it. i love every phrase you use to describe the same thing
Wow, I didn’t think you could come up with 50 things. You did and it’s a great list. Thanks.
Subscribed! This video was the punchy, straight to the point, no bs approach that actually gets me take action! Literally got a dead plant staring at me right now :')
That *is* some productive video ! 9 minutes and sooo many great tips and reminders ! thanks !
I see a lot of people commenting on one or two of these that they don't agree with, but she makes a lot of great points in this video too!
