Every driver ban in F1 history

- Formula 1 drivers very rarely get banned from races - in fact, just five times in the history of the world championship has a driver sat out a race due to an official FIA sanction. But, unsurprisingly, F1's history of bans is a bit more complicated than that, so in this video we also look at the other drivers who have served what could be termed as 'unofficial' bans over the course of F1 history.

Wow 1994 was so bad that even the stewards almost got banned lol
But punishments is so deserved that must think twice to do any action on the track. I would glad to return.
@@bumblebity2902 what?
@@TheGerbennos It would be great if they restore 1994 punishments like race bans.
Almost? Pretty sure they were all fired after the Schumacher race. (All the ones who worked there. There are different stewards every race)
@@bumblebity2902 Those were terrible knee-jerk punishments, particularly Irvine's being raised from one race to three on appeal. That was simple tyranny from the FIA, serving no purpose other than to intimidate teams into not questioning any decisions. Irvine and Hakkinen should never have received bans or even punishments of any sort, they were all racing incidents. And while Schumacher may have broken a particular rule, a 5-second penalty was proportionate justice, not a two-race ban.

I think he personally banned the ban!
The officials are frightened to ban him in case he crashes into their hospitality bus whilst they're inside it
He did get a penalty for speeding in the pits whilst serving a penalty for speeding under yellows, that were out for a crash he caused and got a penalty for, didn't he? In Hungary a few years ago?
Häkkinen recieving a ban? He's like the cleanest, gentlemanliest and most honourable drivers there are.
It's so hard to see him as a bad boy like Schumacher.
Caldera it was his second start crash that year, after bumping ou Senna in the Pacific GP.

Shumi was not a bad boy, he used to be a bit reckless

Patrese's ban was extremely harsh. Banning him for something that wasn't his fault. Either he's out or we all go home.
Yeah and they way other drivers bullied him. He must have felt traumatised enough after Peterson's death.
Not that I agree with what they did, but imagine the outcry from drivers and the public. Like now for example - that's like Grosjean running into someone and killing them on the starting grid. Because of his History, people would be calling for his head. Someone died and they pinned the blame - it's human nature.
James Hunt never forgave Patrese for what happened that day. Murray Walker said that, if you wanted to get him fired up while doing the commentary, you only had to comment on how well Patrese was driving.
I think I'm correct in saying that Patrese faced a charge of manslaughter in the Italian court as a result of the incident but was completely exonerated.
No only that, James Hunt went to blame him for the rest of his life.
@@jeremypnet From what I have seen it was Hunt who crashed into Peterson and knocked him off the road. I don't know if that was the case, but if it was, maybe it was a guilty conscience looking for someone else to blame for his friends death.

@@dorientjewoller113 he squeezed Hamilton into the wall leading up to la source. I think it was pretty clear cut to be honest, with the penalty being the culmination of a series of "first lap nutcase" incidents at the time.
Hakkinen's penalty was quite harsh. The Silverstone incident was more a racing incident, and Mika actually didn't cause the big pile up at Hockenheim. Most cars involved were towards the back. Three cars all going for the same line into turn 1 caused Hakkinen's crash, just a lap 1 accident.
2002 was such a bore of a season, I don't even remember Massa being replaced by Frentzen. Although I do remember him, crashing into almost everything except the safety car that year.
Well, Massa wasn't actually *banned*. He got a 10 place penalty on the grid and Sauber decided to replace him with Frentzen in order to avoid the grid penalty... more a team decision than a ban.
Yeah, was his teammate that hit the SC that year...
I wish social media was a thing back in 1994. Seeing the initial reaction of fans reacting to big name drivers being banned would be a treat

Hunt was too scared to admit it
Well they probably had a different view of what is racing back then, i mean 4 legendary drivers that raced back then agreed it was patrese's fault

Surprised Yuji Ide wasn't included by having his license revoked after the San Marino GP in 2006, that's a pretty severe ban in and of itself
I think Mazepin would already have one if the FIA would have a look on every driver not only the front or midfield. The amout of Blue flags where he didn't go fully out of the way, the amout of times he impeeded other drivers in Practice and Quali and the amout of times he pushed other driver of track with his way to agressive defending, he would have much more than 12 penalty points.
Senna? Belestre gave him a 6 month ban after Suzuka didn't he? Disqualified him, fined him, and banned him.
That wasn't technically a race ban, as it was the end of the season. Still ridiculous though.
StuntpilootStef but when he was banned in Suzuka, wasn’t that only the penultimate round? I though Adelaide was the final round? So wouldn’t he have been banned from Australia?
@@tempest20000 I did some more reading because I started to doubt my own memory. I was correct, but for the wrong reason. There were two incidents at Suzuka that resulted in an initial ban.
1989 with Prost and Senna (the one I called ridiculous) was a six month suspended ban. So no ban was served.

He's banned a lot harder than a mere race, lol.
When you realize Maldonado never got a race ban
They were scared that they would meet him somewhere on the streets. In a car.
Maybe because he somehow actually won a race? That's what I was thinking.
lol cause he came close some many times to reaching 12 points on his license
@Ennis Parachki He got banned by Renault lmao
I guess FIA revoking Yuji Ide's superlicence doesn't count huh? What baffles me is that Maldonado has managed to not get into the list.
FIA would have forever lived in fear of Maldonado finding them on the streets where ever they went and crashing into them.
Lookin forward to nikita mazapin 😂

Being a legend doesn't have to be a good thing xD
Schumacher was a danger to anyone in front of him.

the FIA killed drivers in 1994, then banned drivers and generally continued to rule poorly for the rest of the season. Cool. Don’t forget that.
maFIA.
They tried everything they could to rob Schumacher of the title, really shameful
Ayrton Senna was LITERALLY killed in May 1994, during the San Marino GP at Imola.
@KoivuTheHab I was just making a point
@Roger Dodger I was making a point. Btw, he crashed at 137 mph, but that serves to show just that the steering was awful. But the FIA should've gone and banned the team from competition until they fixed it for adequate safety.
Extending the ban, just because they think it's wrong? That's a jerk move from people, who shouldn't have ANY power. You see that today from admins of social media sites.
DaveMcIroy No, the extension of the ban still exists in many sports etc where you can appeal a decision after it had completed. For instance if you get a red card for a terrible challenge, you can get a 3 game ban, however if you argue and claim it wasn't a foul, but it is shown that in reality you were wrong, you'll be banned further. It's basically the governing bodies saying "I know what I'm doing, and if you challenge me and you're wrong, you will be penalized further for opposing me"
@@sanvirmaharaj2365 Yeah, if challenging a decision had no negative consequences whatsoever, everyone would try it.
@@sanvirmaharaj2365 Well even if you're challenging them & you're wrong, you're still going to serve the initial penalty. Challenging a ban isn't harming anyone, there's no point on extending the ban because it's a non-issue.
@@nath1606 Tbh I used to think that as well, and in some situations I agree, but sometimes it can make a difference, in the EPL if your ban is extended to 5 games for example, that's 2 extra games which could be against title contenders. In F1 that might be an extra race where you could've won eg. RB in Mexico. Then it makes a difference.
@@sanvirmaharaj2365 I don't see what difference it makes, challenging the FiA & being wrong is still a non issue anyway. The issue is what they did wrong during a race & they're still getting the penalty for that anyway. It's not as if they're getting the penalty removed if they're wrong.
Vettel is currently only 3 penalty points away from an automatic ban.
F1 penalty points licence is too lenient
Interesting how Irvine is somehow regarded good by having driven one or maybe two good seasons in F1, while Grosjean is regarded as trash having similar statistics in F1.
Dude Irvine is trash what ure talking about, he literally called himself "2nd best Ferrari driver ever"
Thanks for getting the Schummi-Silverstone one right. So often the second parade lap overtake is forgotten. He actually overtook Damon twice on the second go. Second start was due to Martin Brundle's Peugeot engine grenading spectacularly on the grid.
The scariest thing about Grosjean's 2012 crash that I will always remember is how close his front wing came to taking off Alonso's head when you watch his onboard... Scary stuff...
Yeah, can you believe Ericson crashed into Grojean in Spa?
I think Ericsson hit us.
The lack of Pastor Maldonado on this list surprises me.
I assumed he would had a ban at some point, God knows he would have earned it.
Jean-Pierre Beltoise's competition license was suspended for (six months?) in 1971 for, in the FIA's judgement, contributing to Ignazio Giunti's fatal crash at a sports car race. Not an F1 incident, but his license suspension barred him from F1 for a while, I believe.
Funnily enough, I'm watching this after retiring from my 2nd race in a row in the F1 2019 game due to Grosjean taking me out...
'No one has got a ban in the modern era' until the 2021 season with Nikita Mazepin...
Many don’t realize, Vettel is only 3 points from a ban, as of 9/15/2019.
Surprisingly enough we’ve got one driver already given a race ban and that’s Kevin magnussen this year in 2024 after he had an incident with gasly in monza and he got banned from racing in Azerbaijan and got replaced by Oliver bearman

Monza 78, further down the grid was not even a stand still when they started that race. And from what I gather many drivers blaming Patrese were as much to blame for the accident.
interesting because all of them are pretty great drivers
Man 90s F1 was great. Hopefully this season's changes bring back the battles and chaos.
you guys say 5 drivers have had bans at the start, and then go and list 8
It's worth mentioning that Vettel also had the risk of taking a ban but they only reduced a couple of his license points instead.
Nikita Mazepin probably will be, or at least should be banned
Did everyone forget both Jenson Button and Takuma Sato being banned when Honda's fuel tank trick was discovered?
Nikita mazepin will for sure be banned
I thought Jenson Button was given a one-race ban following his collision with Pascal Wehrlein in Monaco (2017?, I think). However, as that was a one-off race for Jenson (him coming out of retirement to race for Alonso) he'll probably never actually serve it.
What about the ENTIRE BAR Honda team? They were banned from racing in Spain and Monaco, back at 2005. Jenson Button and Takuma Sato. After one of their cars were found underweight.
I think this is about driver bans and not team bans
drivers were free to race though just not in BAR
If there's any driver most likely to be banned under the new system, it's Mazepin.
Wasn't Vettel close to getting a race ban in 2017? I remember that he'd managed to accumulate a total of 9 penalty points as of the end of June/start of July 2017 and he was at risk of being given a ban if he accumulated 3 more penalty points at the following race.
There was one race where Vettel rammed into Hamilton under the Safety Car (can't remember the race or the year, but very recent). Vettel got a 10s stop & go. IMHO he should have had a race ban.
@@TheSpotify95 Baku
Now he almost got banned
'94 was one crazy year. Some of those bans - not Michael's - seem harsh in hindsight. They seem to have become far too averse to bans since though, I'm still amazed Vettel didn't get a ban for hitting Hamilton not once but twice under safety car.
Didnt hamilton brake test him the first time?
Wish I could see the entire 1994 season that must have been a fun time for the fans
@Joshua Chandra
That's why bittorrent and video sharing websites exist.
Well, apart from Imola.
When I think of being "banned" I think the driver was never allowed to race again. Being out only one race is more of a "suspension", not a "ban." I also like peach ice cream.
I mean there's also the FIA totally banning Yuji Ide for being such a bad driver he made Maldonado look like Lewis Hamilton
Hakkinen also crashed at Ste. Devote, in 1994 too, causing some to briefly label him a 'crash kid'.
Mazapin will be next
It's funny that all these drivers were at one point champions or championship contenders, except Grosjean, and even he had a season that he was regularly on the podium and challenging for wins. It seems like the faster guys also get into more trouble.
Next driver to get banned, Sebastian Vettel. He is just 3 points away from 12. With 7 races to go i am sure he is going to do something stupid. This is just not his year.
DJP DJP he has three races to get 3 points. After the Japanese GP points drop off so he would need more than 3 after it. Still very doable and likely considering his incident at monza.
@@Smasher225 Well, i am hoping and praying that nothing happens and he actually wins a race or two. That will shut the fucking press up about his need to retire.
Vettel is slower than his teammate for multiple races now. He wasn't able to compete with Hamilton and Bottas, Leclerc was though. That seems to bother him to the point of him making ridiculous mistakes. Last race the top 3 drove away from him in the first few laps and he ended up spinning. Then he got over laped by hamilton and Leclerc and again couldnt keep up with them after he let them past. Apparently, dudes not on the same level as them anymore and starts to have ego issues.
Pretty sure he wont have a saying in the mather of him driving for ferrari next year if he doesnt pick it up in the last 3 races^^
DJP DJP he won’t win a race or two this year. Looking at the schedule I don’t believe there is a track they can win at. Leclerc is a better driver because Vettel doesn’t handle pressure at all. With Leclerc being the number 1 at Ferrari now Vettel will continue to crack under the pressure.
7:56 thinking about it, there's 8 drivers there and 7 of them have been champion or vice-champion of an F1 season. That is quite the collection.
Mazapin or however you spell the new haas driver
What about Christian Danner? He was banned from the 1987 Monaco GP after causing a collision with Michele Alboreto's Ferrari during the first qualifying session.
Danner was in a warm-up lap and moving slowly, he didn't notice Alboreto arriving at full speed behind him, since the Italian was instead in a flying lap. The two cars collided, and the Ferrari was sent into the rails, catching fire immediately after the impact.
Alboreto was unharmed but furious, and the stewards were mad too. So they decided to ban Danner from the rest of the weekend due to dangerous driving.
The story omits to tell the most important point: Riccardo Patrese was completely innocent in the accident that led to the death of Ronnie Peterson.
I can’t believe Williams will let mansell down
If Grosjean keeps crashing into Magnussen he might be the first driver to get two bans. Hell his own team might ban him if he does it again. 😂
Even championship contenders back in the day had balls to win whatever it takes to win it. Nowadays you get a penalty for trying to race someone.
The amount of times they complain about him on the radio, I would say Magnussen
Poor Riccardo, absolutely unfair! He got blamed by Hunt to hide his own fault that awful day...
Grosjean might have thought that he'll be a legend if he gets a ban, like the other drivers who have been banned
Who all think Mazepin will be banned this year? (100% should be tho)
I saw the accident in Brazil. In the aftermath Brundle was nearly taken out (he was out of his car and not too steady on his feet having tyre marks on his helmet) by a course car. Irvine was unlucky as three cars were approaching a Ligier (?) which was driving slowly on the outside of the track when it should have pulled off the track.
Mazepin will be next for sure
That played out a little differently than we anticipated...
I'd be surprised if we see anyone get a ban. Think Shumi got his points stripped in 1997. Yet Vettel does similar at Baku but effectively got no penalty.
I’ve always said Romain Grosjean is among the greatest F1 drivers in history and this video just confirms it

“I think Ericsson hit the pizza”
Banning someone even harder for objecting? That's straight tyranny.
I think Vettel was lucky to escape a ban after he hit Hamilton in Baku deliberately. The intent being the reason I think he was lucky to avoid a ban.
To me, it looked like he made a wild hand gesture, and clipped the steering wheel with his left hand.
That wasn't a deliberate hit
It wasn't intentional, he was giving him hand gestures and not controlling his car properly.
That's why it's a good idea to have at least one hand on the wheel and pay attention to the road - even great drivers can crash when distracted.
No a 10 second stop go is the harshest penalty before a DSQ, then a ban. It was completely fine
i mean. we have seen someone being banned with the new licence point system. although it wasnt in F1 this years mahaveer raghunatha got himself 12 penalty points in F2 this season.
That guy shouldnt even be allowed anywhere near a circuit, seriously
nettur39 he actually got 25 I think but he couldn’t serve the second ban because he got the points in Abu dabi
You forgot Hamilton's Lie-Gate. When he overtook Trulli during a Yellow flag and then the team told him to let him pass, which Hamilton did. Then he went on to say he didn't understand why Trulli passed him. This resulted in a ban to mercedes for one race.
Don’t you mean McLaren?
It's crazy how many Marlboro ads there were in the 80-90's.
Give a race ban to the 2 Haas drivers K Mag and Romain to teach them a lesson in stop hitting each other every bloody race. Funny enough it still includes Grosjean 🤣
If there were any justice, it will be Mazepin. However, the FIA's confounding policy to reset Super License points when you change divisions will most likely prevent that.
