      Aldas and the cigarette brand funding was essential to F1. They allowed for the fastest drivers to be hired instead of teams having to hire a decently fast driver with lost of money behind the, like nowadays. Not great brands but they created the best eras of F1

      Sauber retained that same basic color scheme for a decade straight, even for a year after Red Bull left to start their own team, so to me 1996-2005 is quintessential Sauber, their most iconic period as an independent. They've kind of been searching for an identity ever since. That's not to say I didn't like the BMW and Alfa years, because those partnerships produced some of the smartest-looking liveries in F1 history, and I'm sure Audi will cook up something good when they take over, but I wish Sauber would revert back to their classic look whenever they're in these periods of being between OEMs.

    As bad as smoking is, tobacco companies were the life savers of so many racing teams, and ultimately the solution for a full and competitive grid... as soon as tobacco liveries weren't allowed anymore i had the feeling, that the grid started to split up in two classes. the big ones, and the ones without the money...

    • @theant9821
      @theant9821 Год назад

      That happened as soon as tobacco companies arrived. When f1 became too expensive for constructors to fund just by selling their own racing cars.
      As Lotus upped the ante with gold leaf everyone else was forced to do the same.
      And the rich/poor divide began.

    • @aslamnurfikri7640
      @aslamnurfikri7640 5 лет назад

      Then they would race with national colours like the old times. Italian teams using rosso corsa, German with silver, British with green/red. French with blue, US with white/blue. Sponsorship is inevitable as F1 has become more and more expensive. And F1 has massive coverage so it makes sense for companies to put their logos on the cars

    • @theant9821
      @theant9821 Год назад

      @@aslamnurfikri7640German traditionally was white. Only Mercedes had adopted the silver after enjoying success with their unpainted aluminium cars before the war.
      BMW used white, on the Brabham, Williams and its own cars.
      Porsche sports cars raced in white before sponsorship took over.
      Since then some others have used silver also with Mercedes having associated the colour with Germany (though technically speaking silver is not a colour).
      British racing green. Some brm gad a red nose or white nose to distinguish one driver from an other not as part of British racing colours.
      The most notable variation would be the green and yellow which became Lotus racing colours.

    One that I don't believe was ever on a formula 1 car but definitely had a discreet presence during F1 coverage was the pairing of Longines and Olivetti. they seemed to vanish sometime during either the late 80's or early 90's for Tag Heuer and Rolex. I saw them any time the leaderboard was being displayed on screen. anyone know what happened with that? I also found it interesting that the official timers have always been single companies like Tag Heuer and Rolex, but Longines and Olivetti came paired together it seemed, even though Olivetti was an italian computer company. can anyone shed light on this? Or am I just looking into it too deeply?
