I love this video because it's as close to being at a Grateful Dead show in the 80's as you can get. This is literally what you would see and hear at a show. Just perfect for those of us that like to feel that again and for those too young to have experienced it.........
I was born in 84 and my father born in 44 so you would think he would have been a Dead fan when you look through his albums, reel to reels etc. he lived The Band, Dylan, CSN&Y but then had a disdain for Neil Young which I never understood. The only album I found was Dylan & The Dead live and loved it but had been in the Panic/STS9/ Cheese/UMcGee and mainly The Mars Volta scene so my love was already prevalent. The Mars Volta live show collection is on par with some guys Dead tapes. Those early 2002-2006ish(look for Jon Theodore on drums, Jon Bonham incarnate when I saw him live on 5 tabs) those were some magical freaking shows yall
It is a great capture. But like I say, from 1970 through 1972 the grateful dead were the 2nd best Country band in America. Only Buck Owens and his Buckaroos were #1. Obvi.
I don't care what anyone else says... we got definite lift off from wire to wire! Thank you Kevin, and thank you Jerry! September '85 was a particularly hot period for the band ;-]
Nice. Glad to have come across this. This was my friends and my first stop, then KC Starlight Amphitheater and onto three shows at Red Rocks. Coming from Coastal South Carolina. For years I’ve thought they did a fun Dupree’s Diamond Blues but I guess not, where was my mind? I was 29 how’d I get here so fast!
I was at this one. Started a new job the next morning. We drove all night to make it home. Bad first day...Wouldn't have done it any differently though.
Kevin - Thank you for posting. I went searching for shows I'd been to, settled in with this gem, and then had a time-warp back-in-time experience when I realized in West L.A. that the toe-headed muppet head bopping in the frame a few yards below you was me. My kids will get a hoot out of this! What a great string of shows through the hot summer. The OK City Zoo Amphitheater was such a treat of a venue. And a sweet show indeed. Thank you!
Sound quality is fantastic!! Nice separation on all the instruments . Bobby was usually turned down in the 80s, but everyone else is clear. Phil is booming !
For the young heads commenting, is this sick shit or WHAT?. For some reason ALL 1985 soundboards sound like this!!! The 85 Summer tour was super special they had this wicked 20 year banner behind them . The first night merriweather my friend Siegs and I were about 20th row and Thry were having trouble with the sound one channel was out in Jack A Row and then it sounded sooo rich and full, like this!! Amazing sound the drums so crisp, Jerry is rumbling!
Was blazing hot day....like 104F or something....the way to beat the heat was to dose and go inside the zoo in the afternoon and hang out in any bldg with AC....like the aviary and watch the birds.... Band went on a bit late I think to let it cool off some The KC Starlight show was awesome too.... Thanks for the post KT!
This totally captures what it was like to be at a show around that time and being that close to the stage. Even the "ahh shit!" moments when the tall guy comes and blocks that perfect view you had..lol. 1985 was an interesting year. Some really kick ass shows mixed in with some duds. Also a lot of crazy setlists. Definitely one of their most varied years in terms of setlists.
5 years late... but man, this is one of the best Grateful Dead videos/shows ever seen. Thanks a lot! It's very cool here in 2024 to see all the comments below of people at this show. I was at this one too. Houston Astroworld, Austin horse race track, and this one. Couldn't make it on to KC for the next one due to work. Thanks again for your video and to all the Grateful Dead fans.
Ok was ok with us sleeping the night in their parking lot... In the morning i woke with sounds of zoo animal yawns and so many happy chirping birds. I felt so supported by a venue... that it was ok to let us spend the night without having to drive away... It was truly magical and i left thinking that Ok people were more than ok... they were fine!
I was discharged from The U.S. ARMY in July of 85 and saw The DEAD at The ASTROWORLD Amphitheater in August with SNAKE and L.G. then drove back to Rockport to watch the sun rise on the beach. " THE MUSIC NEVER STOPPED "
Holy mother of all things 1985. Last night I was listening to Stanford Frost from ‘85…one of my favorite weekends I had the pleasure of seeing live back in the day. The band was so so crisp, so relaxed, and those hot sunny summer “runs” like Ventura, Irvine, Oakland, Pako Alto, Berkeley Greek, Chula Vista, Long Beach…man those were indeed the golden days. I can almost feel the sun on my skin, and the band 30 feet from me. I JUST discovered this video and I’m stoked. Like man, I can’t do a thing about climate change, fascism, the ‘22 midterm elections next week…but I sure can smile smile smile as I drift back in time some 37 years to a time that feels as vivid as yesterday. 🧡🧡🧡🧡
My first mini tour was the Summer of 85 - absolutely fell deep in love for the Dead after that tour - Saratoga>Hershey>Meriweather 85 is forever etched in my fun time memories - Meriweather was the 1st I ever experienced the awesomeness of 2for5 lol
This was a magical time in gd land. The soundboards from 85 tell the story. Jerry got busted in the park in January, when east coast spring tour rolled around the first news we got was "Jerry wore a red shirt in Hampton!" One of those times where the lyrics mirrored life -Springfield 3/24/85 The Bertha omfg the energy when he got to the "test me why don't you arrest me". Give it a listen if you are not familiar with it. Another great moment was Rochester during the Touch of Grey when they got to "we will get by" and this amazing banner came down with 20 years so far, crowd went ape. Such incredible sound live. Hershey park in the rain with the birdsong>comes a time>deal and a monsterous space- dew etc I could go on and on. My favorite year has always been 85
Thanks for sharing this! The entire show is top notch, but that second set between SOF and China Doll is priceless. Actually, the entire second set is amazing. Great video and even greater audio; thanks again for the share!
I was there, grate show. Took my college roommate but I'm not sure he, "got it." Red Rocks before and two nights later Starlight Theater in KC, MO. Killer run.
this might have been only about my fourth show, having seen my first in St Paul 83 and then th Alpine's before this night and then Kansas City the next night where I lost my friggin' mind!!
The sound in the 2nd set is exceptional, even by Grateful Dead standards. 85 has always been a favorite year of mine, I discovered the Dead and began collecting tapes that year. Soundboards from 85 summer tour were the foundation upon which I built my collection, Alpine, Hershey, Merriweather, The Greeks. All top notch shows. They even kicked ass at the Frost that year. 20 years so far... Thanks Kevin.
This entire tour was amazing!!! Big Steve told me on his show that the bird sounds during the Houston Birdsong a few nights before this show, was him with a bird whistle and a mic behind the drums!!!!
Frost ‘85 was one of my favorite weekends ever. I stood literally against the front barricade right between Jerry and Brent the entire Saturday show. Incredible amounts of eye contact, closeness and pure joy.
Kevin-- this is fabulous footage and sound. I was at the previous two shows. Wish I had been at this one, but it is a huge blast to watch. Thank you very much.
₩hat•? Drummerz? No fi%fh☆inn way. Just figured i waz seeing double, Cool. But seriously like to relax n un-focus my eyes to watch em' play... fun to see the movement's unisonic weave that Ebb n flows, too n fro, from neither here nor there, & has Been known to cause extensive sea sickness. And the onlY Cure... Jerry on squirrel brains, Cool...
Is Phil playing particularly well or is it "just my imagination, runnin' away with me"? Ha! Nice recording. He and Jerry were very cool on Me and My Uncle!
Thanks for sharing. Great sound! I believe we were 30-40 feet to your left. One of the best shows I have ever seen. Will always remember the giant harvest moon above the stage in the second set.
in my opinion one the best shows in the eighties. and I'm an 87-89 as the best era deadhead.....so that being said. I wish someone would remaster this, the sound is good, dont get me wrong. but could you imagine hearing it live. I envy yall that was there. much love.....

Donna's dying screeching banshee caterwauling like nails on a chalkboard to me. I find it difficult to even listen to shows from her tenure in the band. Ouch. Could never figure out why? Unless GD were all pulling a train on her every night?
First of all, this is phenomenal and thanks very much for sharing! However, I have to ask, with all the obvious work put into this through the video software etc, why not a couple of extra clicks of the mouse and convert it to 16x9? It's right there in the drop down menu, two to three clicks of a mouse. Wow.
I was there. I swear to whatever that there were 3 cigar shaped UFOs hovering overhead...briefly, during the first set. I turned to my friend, and pointed to the enigmatic trio. He looked, then squinted , and his eyes lit up and he looked back at me...and all we could do was laugh.
How appropriate....The Zoo....A concert at the Zoo. The promoters had to find somewhere for all the animals to enjoy the music. Must have worked since the dead played there at least 2-3 times. Kansas City Zoo was next...indeed! Lost my friggin' marbles on that night with that Cryptical>OtherOne>Cryptical to Open the second set... My 5th show I believe, and I gave all our shirts away afterwards. WOW
This is one of those shows where they are poppin' with the X-factor special sauce right off the bat. Like someone once said, when Phil is on, the band is on. Certainly seems to be the case here.
I was lucky enough to to catch the entire Southwest tour that year✌️👍🏻
Excellent, this view of the crowd is surreal. Feels like Marty McFly traveling back to 1985. What a time capsule!
I love Brent’s sound during this time, like jewels popping in the air.
Too electronic sounding
Too Casio cheapness
