Also my first show at the impressionable age of 15, I wasn't exactly sure what LSD was as I gobbled down 4 hits but I soon found out, I was everywhere in the Stadium before before the show was over from a catered, carpeted sky box to the upper deck for OMSN and Sugar Magnolia. Clouds of sweet smoke rose off the audience while front row dead heads threw long stemmed red roses at Jerry's feet. Also in the skybox there was closed circuit video feed of the whole show, so it's out there somewhere. When I came down (the next day) I was changed for life here I am at age 53 still listening every day.
I love when Jer took some extra laps of the Scarlet instrumental. It meant he was playing well and was confident. ..and how he made it different every time - and often brilliant - at least in the post-hiatus, Godchaux period, from when Scarlet met Fire...April, 77?
In the back groun of that jam it sounds like Bob Weir is replacing a brokestring while Jerry was extending the jam ,coving up for weir to get the string changed . The sound of a string being tuned is heard inthe background and jerry's extended jam adds up to an excellentr cover up of a broken string in the middle of a great jam
I'll always remember the diamond vision screens in Giants stadium that day, basically a quote: "Want to take a trip? ... Grateful Dead Giza Egypt". Their next shows after 9/2/78 was on to Egypt.
This was my first Dead concert, it was a hot sunny day. Caught a burn. Camped out the night before with friends and the next day I ran into half my town from East Rockaway Long Island. What a blast we had.
Awesome man.. my first concert was in Chicago in my favorite song then after listening to many albums and bootlegs with Shakedown Street and oh yeah, they opened up with Shakedown Street I flip the f*** out great show still listening to it that was 20 years ago
Thanks tons for posting this. Never would have heard it, I was a small child and the folks hated rock and roll. Never would have heard this without you. Excellent.
@@BugsBunnysBrother Yeah...I wasn't there but from what I have read it was Donna Jean Godchaux. Appearance wise I can see why someone would think Donna was Emmy Lou Harris for sure.
I remember when they played One More Saturday Night the water fountains came off the walls down on the infield. Water spraying everywhere . It was a hot day.
Garcias, and the bands for that matter, particular blend of cocaine this evening should be analyzed, mass produced, and put in the Smithsonian.....Phil is particularly jammed up during scarlet
Jerry's solo during Scarlet before the last verse may be the best he's olayed. Its incredible, not one bad note and he's reaching for new heights the whole time. It peaks perfectly, its incredibly lyrical and it has some unique riffs even for Jerry. Keith is playing well too
Too bad this show was cut short when Jerry was spotted by a cop smoking junk during drums and they had to pull the plug and flee. This really excellent Scarlet Fire shows the band teetering on the abyss - their powers are intact but their demise is already visible. Very sad.
And not for nothin' but almost, one might go So we did, 10,000 of us went everywhere on the road. went to a show, as if one show would be enough, A show, the 4th was golden, then 10 and then a tour{(~)ten tours={(~) a life lost' n found
I didn’t enjoy this concert as much as I should have…..Giants Stadium seemed cold concrete plastic…when I had been seeing them in gyms and hockey rinks but this was a high lite

My fist show! Of many many more!
robert hutchings ain't that right. Yup, #1 of many many. 🍀🎶🌹
I was at this show ❤
Thanks for sharing 👍😊
The Good ole Grateful Dead 🙏
Unbelievable day! Drove from Port Jefferson.
Scarlet/Fire is second only to Barton Hall (IMHO)-depends on mood, but it is one of the best! Lots of folks jumped on the bus this show.
the latest issue of Guitar World agrees with you…good call man..
I love Scarlet fire. I believe it second to none
This is way better than Cornell
The Scarlet from 9/2/78 Giants and the Fire from 5/8/77 Barton Hall still isn't quite as good as Cedar Falls, Iowa 2/5/78.
Yes, like me, for example!
The crescendo of sound is truly magnificent
2/4/22: This. Is an experience. Too beautiful for words. I was laughing so hard because it’s too beautiful for words. 💕

I was at this show! Willie and Emmy Lou Harris opened for them. Emmy Lou sang with them.
It was Donna who sang with Willie Nelson. Waylon Jennings was supposed to play (Waylon Willie) and NRPS. Was a fine way to spend a Saturday....

This my most numerologically related Dead performance. I am drawn to the date.
I remember when they played One More Saturday Night the water fountains came off the walls down on the infield. Water spraying everywhere . It was a hot day.
I remember is as well
I was at this show.
This was the first Dead show at Giants stadium. I was there. Opening acts were Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Real nice time.

Really good version. So smooth and silky in the latter half of Fire. They kind of drop the ball in the outro though.
# 1 Fire
6 days before I was born
This year marks my 50th year a Deadhead. Where does the time go?
Much love

Dick Latvala thinks this as the best Scarlet > Fire in Dead history.
