Hi Liz, First of all, I really appreciate what you are doing and the way you are trying to help people. I don't think there is another channel who has such information about MTD. I would like to ask your advice as a person who had suffered from MTD too. In short, I'm dealing with it for more than 2 years and couple months ago I stopped my vocal lessons once more time and found a vocal speech therapist. This guy isn't a doctor but he mostly teach people how to speak in public, singing and has a knowledge about dysphonia. We has been working on breathing exercises as well as with muscle tension in general. I even started to feel that speaking during the day became much easier, with a less pain but after I tried to sing for a hour I returned to previous state when I constantly feel kind of burning in my throat and like my vocal folds are a bit swollen. My question is what exercises ( like using straw, lip roll and so on) you could recommend to do for a person who can't sing without pain?
Thanks again so much for these, Liz! Happy to share my story with you too :) I'm a singer/songwriter who had a very similar experience as you and your guests. I also have a podcast where I talk...a lot (too much.) So much of my recovery was a shift in my attitude that took me years to finally figure out. And I'm so proud of the album I made that was during the worst of my voice issues. I'd love a chance to help others.
Hey Jordan! What’s your podcast called?? That’s awesome you have discovered the mind body connection yay! I’m not taking on any more chats on this currently (I have 2 booked now and taking a break on it for a bit) but feel free to reach out in the future. So happy for you!
@@LizBills Yes! I hope one day we could, there's so much overlap in our stories and I have yet to meet anyone not online that has had my experience. My podcast is about the band They Might Be Giants, so it's really nerdy and specific, and called Don't Let's Start: A Podcast About They Might Be Giants. My MTD (or whatever I have) made me so anxious about recording episodes until I just had to shift my brain to just be more positive about it. Same with my music. My band is Trouble's Afoot, and my album Woke Up Dark has the best singing I've ever done, and it was in the absolute worst time of my MTD. I consider that album a genuine miracle. I don't know how I did it. Thanks again for all your help on your channel!
Howard if you read this, hang in there. I've also hd MTD for 7 years, very severe. You also appear to be a bass like me, judging by your speaking voice and body shape. I don't know about you, but my speaking range - from about low G to C/D are by far the most pain inducing notes in my voice. When my voice is fresh, falsetto and high notes can be so much easier, as they don't tend to fall 'into the throat' like those low notes. My teachers say that it makes sense because we speak so much more than singing, so these notes become the most abused area of the voice. I'd be interested to know if it's similar for you, but for me this is where the pain kicks in the quickest and most severely.
@@Howard_Louis_MusicHi, Howard I was also diagnosed with MTD just wanna ask if you experience difficulty breathing after sometime of looking down like writing or doing the dishes? Thanks.
@@jocelynalfante3524 hi. I have not encountered that issue. Haven’t heard of that happening before! What has your doctor/speech pathologist/specialist said about that?

Hey my new friend! I don’t experience this issue… did you ask about it? I would ask your speech therapist, since you’ve been diagnosed will you see one soon? It may be tension but I can’t be sure. If you don’t already I would start massages, breath meditations.. stretching You can find massage and stretching on my playlists. You can search RUclips for breath meditations 💓🫶🏻 I did have a feeling of fullness in front of my neck way back but not sure if this is the same.
@@LizBillsI stopped speech therapy after four sessions and just continued with the exercises and the exercises I watched in your videos. I will try massages and stretching. Thank you.
@@jocelynalfante3524 wonderful!! Keep doing the exercises as well most importantly! This will correct the muscles from tensing during speech and or singing. Takes time! :)
