Wow! I love how Gil plays a concerto more like an ensemble work. He is right there, listening, reacting to the orchestra, playing “with” but shining above. One of my favorite Gil performances!

During the applause it looks like he says something like “That was the best I’ve ever played it. Wow, wow, wow.” I love that.

I was present at the London Proms when Shaham gave a terrific performance of the Barber concerto. This is also a great performance . As usual the Frankfurt orchestra is top rate .

Good conducting. Gets a great sound out of the wind section. Plus you get to hear things you don't on other performances. Gil S. is bloody marvelous of course. As always.

With its remarkably original and effecting slow movement and its exciting, brilliant finale, the Prokofiev 2nd is certainly one of my favorite violin concerti. (His 1st is also, the two being as different as day and night, a tribute to the composer's genius.) This is an extraordinarily virtuosic performance by Gil Shaham, the finale in especial really catches fire, and Malkki brings out many orchestral details sometimes not in evidence. I have a special fondness for Isaac Stern's Columbia LP recording which is quite different, but Shaham and Malkki have produced a great interpretation also.

Just wonderful from all concerned. How these top soloists can manage to smile at the conductor in the middle of a really complex passage is beyond comprehension. The video and audio quality is superb too, so many thanks.

At 14:50 I can hear guitars strumming in the cello part and in the last movement, the sound of castanets almost tells me that Prokofiev knew that the premiere would take place (in 1935) in Madrid, Spain.

Einfach wunderbar!

This concert is one of the most enjoyable works of Prokofiev. I find Janine's interpretation on the available youtube video so much better. Much more nuanced, lively and with a sense of easiness Shaham can't match. She has perfect pitch and lovely amazing tone. Also, here, the violin audio is much more forward and the overall sound is less balanced with the orchestra.

i also appreciate the unique sound he produces. It's more as I imagine Prokofiev himself would've wanted it to sound

Very sweet; but I'd like it wilder, like one I heard many years ago from a late 1950s recording, but I do like Shaham - he's very skilled. There's just no 'edge' to his performance, and is the 2nd Movement tempo marked "plodding"? It's excruciating.

When the soloist is playing, the camera needs to be on the soloist. To do otherwise is egregiously disrespectful to the soloist!
