Gil is a wonderful human being. I went to school with him and although we didn't get overly personal, we were around each other quite a bit over the years. He was ALWAYS in good spirits and always played outstanding. Once at Tanglewood he happened to be walking on the grounds during the afternoon before a concert. He was with some arrogant folks from our former school who wanted nothing to do with me. He made it a point to walk away from them and shake my hand. Other human beings should strive to be like him. He's the real deal!

Amazing. I've seen Gil Shaham giving a Master Class on this little, sweet piece. How he explained every single syllable, every note, every extenuation, and every single emotion related to Mozart's last, and most complete, violin piece. Now, the Master himself plays the piece - and you can finally understand everything he said. Just a masterful performance. Bravo maestro!

The thing about Gil is his innate artistic inquisitiveness. You can tell by listening that each time he performs, he is trying to gain insight into the conditions of that particular performance and is trying to bring out the musical phrases in the best possible way to make the music satisfying, pleasing, exciting and entertaining. What a great artist. I’m 64 and I want to play like him when I grow up. LOL

This is so incredible. Gil Shaham is, to me, the best violinist on the planet right now. He makes every note and every phrase unbelievably beautiful. And he just keeps getting better with each passing year.

You are so right. Best around and the equal of any of the greats of the past. What he has that Heifetz didn't ( or didn't show) was a sense of fun and wonder in the music and his amazement and joy in his own playing. He surprises himself sometimes. Something beautifully child- like about him. He's a sweetheart!

That Strad is very lucky to have Shaham at the helm...! It will age nicely and continue to grow its sound palette. It's common knowledge to luthiers that if a great violin is played badly over many years then it will become a dull wooden box (and take years to correct, to get back up to performance standard). Shaham is doing the opposite and keeping the violin very much alive. I love his playing style. Very noble.

Freely paraphrasing Freiherr von Eichendorf's locus classicus "quod possit Jovi, no intelligit bovi", within the limitations of my understanding, I none the less am very grateful to Gil Shaham and the SWR symphony orchestra, under the baton of Nicholas McGegan, for sharing this exhilerating interpretation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's fifth violin concerto.
