I just love the fact that you seem/are soooo professional, yet you made a mistake, BUT you didn't edit it out. :D No surprise, loved this video as well. :)
Hey, I always tell people if you can't handle sewing a sleeve on wrong-side out three times in a row and still having to rip it out and redo it, you can't be a pro seamstress! Lol
Ha! So glad you say you are not perfect. Just a beginner when it comes to gowns and wedding dresses but I love dressmaking and working with all the beautiful fabrics. Thank you for your wonderful tutorials.
Another invaluable video that is saving my life...about to tackle a zipper take in this morning and feel so much more secure about doing it with your help. Thank you
Great video. I too "move over" at the waist seam when I put an invisible zipper in any dress- I often tack the zipper to the salvage there as well so I can give that slider plenty of room to zip. Most of the invisible zipper replacements I have to do are caused by that too tight to the coil stitching at a pressure point. By bumping out you make it so much easier to zip and a little tack can make it look as if it's sewn perfectly straight. In fact I have made this change to dozens of ready to wear dresses of many types and the customers love it. It is super great with that funky scuba type fabric.
I really enjoy your entertaining style! RATS! That made me laugh out loud! Your tips are making me step up and rethink my sometimes painstakingly slow habits that I have formed over the many years I have been altering bridal gowns. I am definitely a fan!
I just found your page…girl, I’m in love! Thank you for stating where you get your zippers. I love all the tips and details…and yes ma’am, we all make mistakes. Thanks for keeping it real ♥️
I love your videos. Thank you so much for making them. Those little tips like sewing the bottom of the zipper slightly to the side of the CB are invaluable. I’m going to try that today on my next alteration. 😍❤️😍
I'm so glad I can help. Lol I don't even remember the tip you are mentioning, some of these videos are very stream of consciousness, so it is hard for me to keep track of what all I say!! Lol scary!! 🤦♀️
Invisible zippers😱. I’ve only taken one wedding gown up at the zipper. Nerve racking, that’s what it is. It worked! Today Om ordering a 5 bridal zipper to put back into a high end pageant gown. 3rd time is the charm?? Got my fingers crossed🤞🏻. No. This one won’t be taken up. Issue: more girl than dress...👿. 🤷🏼♀️. Your tutorials are like HGTV. I can watch them over and over and over. Keep them up. You are my Cliff Notes. 😉
superb thankyou! I have a formal gown that is too big and I was hoping to bring it in 2 inches at the zip and was doubting if it should be done that way, but when I have pinned it the sleeves are perfect so I didn't want to adjust the side seams. This will be wonderful!
I love french seams. I.just did those on a 1 YO's Hocus Pocus Sarah Sanderson costume for Halloween. Everytime I tried it on her for fit she made such a fuss I figured she was going to be picky about how it felt. So under the embroidered organza top fabric I did an super soft mauve flannel (nice and warm for Halloween)with the french seams. God forbid any of the embroidery touch the little ones delicate skin. She ended up loving it. Thank goodness!!
I'm learning a lot by watching your videos, but I also know a lot too. Even so, it STILL helps to watch your videos on stuff I know. It's nice to know I'm doing it like someone with experience and there isn't a secret way to do something quickly that is taking me forever! And as others have said, leaving in the mistake was so great to see! LOL It happens. Get the razor (I like my surgical seam rippers) and fix it. Deal. Thanks!
Yes, I have found this channel to be just as valuable as a source of confirmation for veteran seamsters as it is a fresh learning source for those new to the industry.

Ok. Got a question for you. I have a curvy short bride. We played with the sides to take it in there. Did I mention that it was backless? 😱. She didn’t like how it felt, sooooo I pinched in at the zipper. She likes how it feels there.
Question: I am fitting a curvy bride. It is backless. Oh, just shoot me now. 😱. I took it in at the side. She didn’t like how it felt. Pinched it in at the zipper, she liked this. I am shortening the straps, 4 of them. My question is, this is an A line gown. Do I make small gathers or do I take it out? Of course, it does have buttons all the way down. It just gets “gooder & gooder”. Also told her to get correct foundation wear, or tape the girls up. Thanks for reading, and I am open for suggestions. Love. Love. Love all of your videos. It’s like having a girl party on my sewing room. Book? What book? I saw this on a post somewhere. 💋
I love how you just go ahead and sew! I would be measuring and tacking (zipper tape), holding my breath, hoping I didn't ruin something! I have done costume sewing (new) (ballet and clogging teams) but I don't like alterations! I always start and finish with a bit of anxious stress! I have not done this type of work except in a pinch for someone I know and I usually did not enjoy the process. May I ask: how did you learn these techniques? Thanks for sharing!
After I looked a few times at the clarity of the last video compared to the one on my computer, I could see that there was something wrong in the online version. It was very low-res. I re-uploaded the video and double checked to make sure that it came through HD. Try tweaking your settings cog to HD and watch the new vid and see if it is much more clear. Let me know in the comments if this is more clear! :)
I have a True Vintage dress that I want to take in! ITs from 1950s and looks very little worn. Its a thick lace all the way and seam up the back, has a satin waist, and ribbon in front and lined and sleeves. I decided to cut up the back and bring it in half inch on each side. I am scared but its time to go for it.
I am still examining it, how does my sage green dress look so professionally made yet it looks made by hand...I am over my head but hoping I can copy the same thing that was done. Gosh its a pencil knee length but such details. One edge of the fabric is folded over so it hides the zipper!! How cool!
I would love to know what you keep on your machine while you’re sewing. Pins, feet, lighter, razor, magnets are all things I’ve seen, but I’m curious about your machine setup.
Wowww this is so helpful. I made bridesmaids dresses with a hand sewing lace on the top part of the dress and the dresses came out bigger and thought of taking in from the zip to avoid a lot of work of un picking the laces on the side seam but doubted if it was the right technique. Now I can do it with confidence💃💃💃. Question here I would like to know how many meters would I need to make a very puffy wedding dress. How many meters per layers?
It can be reused, but that's a matter of personal preference. Personally, I am sickened by the cheapness of the zippers most manufacturers put in wedding gowns. It's really sad to me that a bride can pay well over a thousand dollars for a gown, but be given a 1$ zipper. The whole gown relies on that zipper. I prefer to upgrade when I have the opportunity. Not always, but when I have the opportunity. :)
@@BridalSewing Yes sorry, how would you tackle changing an invisible zipper to a lapped zipper with buttons on a dress that has an illusion back that meets satin
We wouldn't. Why isn't it kept invisible? That's usually preferred. I've literally never in all my years of sewing had someone request an invisible zipper changed to have a flap. I often work on very high end designer gowns, and when they want buttons and a zipper on an illusion back, they use invisible with the buttons placed to the left. I also have never seen a lapped zipper on an illusion back.
@@BridalSewing The image my bride has is of a dress with an illusion back with a button closure no zipper in the illusion fabric just the buttons, but where the illusion meets the satin, on the satin the zipper appears to be slightly lapped and the buttons continue down the center back to the train. I hope I am explaining it right. It is just puzzling me on how that is done.
I'm really new to sewing but what if I have a dress that I need the waist to be smaller but it has a zipper on the center of back? do I have to take out the zipper or can I just take it in on the side seams?
do you have any tips for saving your fingernails from getting shredded when pulling pins out of your sewing at the machine? my thumbnail keeps getting split down the middle. :( probably doesn't help that I have thin nails.
I always have a problem. . . Everytime I make a dress that is tight from the waist to the upper body, My invisible zipper always get stuck at the waist 😢 please help me.
Whenever you come to an intersection, you swoop away from the coils a little bit for about a cm. That should help. I'll try to do a video on it! Invisible side zippers are the worst for it. Also try rubbing dry bar soap on the coils and zip and unzip to lube the zipper before the bride gets in her gown.
@@BridalSewing yes! please make a video of it 😀 i think it will be more clear for us to understand if you can show us the technique to solve this problem on video. Can't wait for it 😀 And thank you so much for the solution. im going to try it.
I will be on the lookout for that situation and will record! :) A hint I can give you is that it is often only sewn to the lining and the tulle layers just float above it. (They are just slitted.)
I have a question about a lapped zipper. I am doing an alteration taking it in at the zipper, however it is lapped, no big deal. but I wondered if I should be taking is in all the way down the seam to the hem?
That's one thing I love about doing sewing for a living. We get to make judgement calls & get to go home each night knowing we did what made the bride look best! As you know, that's the most important thing. ❤
