I’m the same, the asthetics and command structure of the 1st is one of if not the best out of all of the other Legions. I have a real fascination of the Dreadwing and Ironwing (war crimes and wardens for the excindio, along with Farith Redloss).

You have the Lion taking a sword from a stone in the forest dimension, him gathering the Fallen into a band of 20 knights, the Slaaneshi guard of Seraphax (the main antagonist) being the Green Knight who would trade a blow for a blow, and the Emperor being symbolised by a wounded fisher king (in Arthurian legend, the keeper of the Holy Grail) who needed to be healed by a hero in order for his realm to be healed. Hell, even Seraphax is a sorcerer, like Morgana Le Fay.
Dark Angels have the best-looking theme overall. They dress like actual knights with cloth surcoats worn over the armor. The hoods complete the look. Also, Cypher has a hood the best drip of all the legions and the coolest marine in lore. And they have the watchers, who exist only to enhance the cool factor of any marine they hang out with and provide plot armor. The watchers also carry super weapons and will often loan them out to those they deem cool enough.
I don’t think the Lion is necessarily nicer but he is more open about stuff. In his primarch book he reveals that he is familiar with every single person on his flagship and selects each of them. Because of his “man out of time” situation at the start and his lack of resources he is forced to be more open about things. Also the subsequent time he has spent taking back planets has forced him to interact with baseline humans more than he has since the Emperor found him. It’s giving him time to think about his place in the universe and remember his instincts. He has acted as an exterminator since the dark angels became his legion. Now he is the hunter once again. It’s almost like a reverse of Aragorn’s character arc. From king to a ranger stalking the threats to humanity.
He's 100% nicer lol. The 30k Lion was absolutely insufferable. In fact, I'd go so far as to say he was the biggest douche of all the Loyalist Primarchs and yes, that includes Russ because Russ was at least self-aware enough to know he was a douche. In 40k, he's not exactly Vulkan but he's far, far more patient and personable.
Im never planning on playing DA's but the Lions modle with thr hooded helm makes the mans look like DoctorDoom and now im waiting till the model is available for a decent price to convert it.
I think he's a little misunderstood in the heresy since there are several parts that you see from the wrong characters' povs. I love the changes that they made to him in The Lion: Son of the Forest, but I hope that the changes are eventually explained by some shit Luther said in they duel before Caliban exploded.
I dont rly think thats necessary, i think the way he's thrust into 40K is enough reason for his adjustment in personality, and he explains as much in the book as well that, on reflection, his behavior in the past came with devestating side-effects and repercussions.

The fact that the ironwing doesnt just have battle automata but fully functional (albeit lobotomized) DAOT Men of Iron is just so fucking metal. HH Dark Angels literally went „aight let’s use the bots that destroyed human civilization in our warfare“
Whenever people say that the Mechanicum could take on the 1st Legion, all I could think of is how it just took 12 of those plus the Lion to wipe out an entire forge world (nearly half of them were destroyed in the end, but that’s still highly considerable).
Don't forget the Dread Wing arsenal. There were weapons that destroyed not only you, but your memory and your impression in the Warp. There's the ship mounted canon on the Intolerant which whisks a precise geometry of space entirely into the Warp.

Being a Dark Angels player means running 3 armies, Deathwing, Ravenwing, and "Greenwing". That said, I have 3 full companies of Dark Angels in my cabinet and looking at the new primaris models I know I'm about to start a 4th
As a dark angels fan, I also have to say Dark Angels armor is the most badass of the original legions! First off the Forrest green armor with the tall winged helmet is just so damn slick! Then you have that so cool bone white armor of death wing. I mean if you don't like azraels armor and specifically helmet then I don't know what to do for you!

There's no avoiding the space marines if you're gonna be a warhammer channel since they take up like 90% of the lore but imo the other factions are what make this such a colorful setting
I created a DA Successor chapter for 10th edition. These guys fought against Luther on Caliban but were suspected of having sympathy towards him. So they were stationed on one of the most remote planets in the galaxy and given virtually no support. Their geneseed degraded from being copied over and over again, so they had a choice to make; either die out completely or repair their geneseed using slices taken from the Iron Warriors that besieged their planet. Today they have several knights that don't look quite resemble the other Dark Angels. Luckily, The Lion still has tremendous respect for Barabas Dantioch.

I like the new Lion. I think he’s a much more interesting character now rather than “WHO AM I ALL I KNOW IS KILL.” Having a kind person in 40k is such a good change in pace. It gives the setting some hope even though most things in the imperium are still boned.
Ravenwing, Deathwing, Greenwing/Assaultwing, Firewing, Ironwing, Dreadwing. Each is a role in the six wings. There are only six. They don't name everything (X)wing, three of those wings have since been decommissioned. We've only got the Deathwing and Ravenwing plus the Greenwing, but the Ravenwing and Deathwing are the first and second companies. The Greenwing is everyone else, and they don't call everything the Greenwing (unit type).
Fun story time. If we're talking space marines, allow me to reminisce on when I was first playing back in 3rd/4th edition. I was learning the ropes of the game with my Ultramarines and while I played the Blood Angels frequently I also played against Dark angels. I was whipped, every time. Every strategy I had torn to pieces. A lightning stike with speeders and multimeltas, poor roles. Trying to hold back the Close combat squad...eviscerated. And then the psychic phase...Emperors Bowels. The Dark Angels could make you run off the battlefield in 3rd and 4th...it was dumb and I hated it. So eventually I fell to chaos. I was angry...so naturally I made a world eaters army and given all my combat prowess, became a pretty fun force to be reckoned with. The cool thing about my World Eaters is that before I got Kharn or terminators or anything else I bought a warlord and he was holding in a powerfist a spacemarine helmet and it was then that I knew exactly what color to paint. It was one of my best paintjobs at the time and the first thing I did heading down to that GW game store was show it off. Of course the Dark angel players immediately spotted the trophy and asked, "Is this because of our Dark Angels?" to which I looked at them with a casual smile. "Oh yeah." I replied and we all had a good laugh. So...unfortunately the Warlord is kinda outdated and I have yet to check if he can still be legal, but man...Those were good times and good days.
Mr. Bones, man, I'm such a fan of what you've done here. This 20 part series has taught me so damn much about chapters of Warhammer 40k. I can't thank you enough. I also love how you explained things. It really did feel as though I was talking to a buddy. It just made it all so much easier to digest. I became a fan of Warhammer 40k mostly through promotional art, video games, and toys. I knew very little of the lore and it's thanks to videos like this that I was able to get some idea of Warhammer 40k's backstory. I was immediately drawn to the Salamanders and Raven Guard. I really loved the Salamanders' compassion and thought the Raven Guard was cool as they reminded me of the Navy Seals of Warhammer. But man, the Dark Angels appear to do it all and look cool as hell doing it. I think I've found another favorite chapter.

Okay, I'm a massive DA fan, so I apologize for being that guy, but, his personality change isn't from the forest, it's from his experience. When he smashed his homeworld, killed thousands of his sons, and lost his father, for the first time in the Lion's life, he actually took a moment and realized he lacked communication skills. Almost every problem he has in 30k boils down to, the Lion has bad social skills, and God bless him, he actually acknowledged it. "I failed my father, I fear I failed my brothers, I will not fail my sons." I love this dude, I've been a DA fan for over 2/3 of my life, and I can honestly say, his change in personality is the best thing that could have happened for him. Give me more sassy old gay Charles Dance, and bring on more 30k loyalists. Seriously, we have 30k loyalist marines alive for the first time in the history of 40k. This shit is amazing.
I would love if they did a playable unit that is comprised of some of the Risen characters (GW has already done this type of idea with the Gaunts Ghosts characters). My 2 ideas would be the following. The Members of Echo station Or Zabriel, Launciel, Galad, Lohoc, Kai, and possibly Borz or Aphkar

After the Alpha Legion video there's still the other space marine factions. Custodes, Black Templars, Legion of the Damned, and Grey Knights can easily fit into this series. Hell you could even make videos on the more popular chapters like the Blood Ravens.
A lot of people missed that when the Lion awoke, he said openly that he felt weaker BUT that he also stated that he was regaining his strength as time continued. He would not have been able to decapitate darmon Angron otherwise.

People hold the ultramarines as the pinnacle of perfection for space marines, but I'd argue that dark angels are the actual pinnacle. They're the first legion of the first primarch, made as the emperor intended before making the other "flavours" with different specialities. The sons of the lion are cold, calculating, ruthless, and efficient in their task. The ultramarines however prefer administration, and many chapters like the white consuls are diplomats and administrators first, and space marines second. They are NOT the perfect marines, as marines were never made for that role. You could argue that the sons of Dorn are equally perfect, but I'd say that they are too obsessed with defensive actions to actually fight an offensive war. Great for holding a front, but then they fall into a war of attrition and rely on more offensive elements to take the fight to the enemy. I'm a blood angels main, but I'll argue again that the dark angels were made to be; and are the perfect representation of what space marines were created to be since their inception during the unification wars. Not blueberry pencil-pushers. Dark angels are as grimdark as you get, and the perfect form of space marine. 100% my second favourite chapter and primarch behind the sons of Sanguinius.
The reason the Dark Angels where the best is because when the Lion was discovered on Caliban the values of the Order went with him. The entire Legion was built on trust, and trust in the Dark Angels was absolute. it ment that if a wing was summoned in battle to apply their specific tactical expertise every single Dark Angel present trusted whomever it was that would command them for the required duration. The legions command structure, just as the Lion himself was not afraid to lose warriors but only at the highest possible cost. Each warrior afterall was a knight, and every knight lost was a loss to the whole. This intense trust and brotherhood given to every warrior is a incredibly powerful building block to create a legion. When Luther on Caliban rebelled against the Emperor the sacred bonds of trust that were at the core of the 1st legion were broken, its why the Dark Angels hunt the Fallen at *Any Cost* Luther with his betrayal tore out the heart that made the Dark Angels formations and battle-tactics possible. Now the Dark Angels see ghost in every corner and the return of El'Johnson is not helping. The lore as we have it right now is that he is incredibly distant to his sons, not helping the paranoia that allready had its sway over the Darrk Angels for millenia.
I’m happy that they decided to make the Lion less of an asshat now that he’s back. He was absolutely insufferable in the HH; I’ve never encountered a character who I wanted to see get his ass kicked more than the Lion’s 30k incarnation.
I maintain headcanon from within GWHQ that said The Lion arrived in time to defeat Horus alongside Sanguinius and the Emperor, but that he waited in orbit, shrouded by the Warp, waiting to see who would win. By the time he got back to Caliban Luther had heard of this and THAT's the reason the Lion opened fire on the planet and Luther and wrecked everything. The Fallen are not marines who succumbed to the touch of Chaos, but Calibanite warriors who held more loyalty to the Emperor than even Lion El'Jonson.
Always found Luther far more interesting than the Lion who's just an aspy, non-verbal feral child that grew too big. Remember when he was so angry he decapitated his high chaplain by punching his head off? Dickhead. And when he nuked Illyrium on Macragge to find Kurze. Asshole. The Lion Son of The Forest was an entirely necessary PR campaign to avoid the potential trauma for 40k Dark Angels fans when their big daddy came back and started drowning every shrine world in phosphex. The Luther character book is one of the best 30k or 40k stand alone novels. The story is great and the central concept is so cool.
"Your Primarch is coming back, except for you, Blood Angels" I mean, Ferrus Manus, Konrad Curze, and Alpharius (Or Omegon? Whoever the hell died on Pluto) aren't coming back either. And only one of Lorgar or Corvus Corax is coming back. Probably Corvus, because as soon as Lorgar stops being a NEET and comes outside, Corvus is probably going to tear him a new asshole. Lorgar's losing streak to Corvus is legendary at this point.
I currently have a Dark Angels army for 9th and 10th edition and I've just been cleaning up on Tabletop. They're probably my favorite faction to tell the truth.

And then the psychic phase...Emperors Bowels. The Dark Angels could make you run off the battlefield in 3rd and 4th...it was dumb and I hated it. So eventually I fell to chaos. I was angry...so naturally I made a world eaters army and given all my combat prowess, became a pretty fun force to be reckoned with. The cool thing about my World Eaters is that before I got Kharn or terminators or anything else I bought a warlord and he was holding in a powerfist a spacemarine helmet and it was then that I knew exactly what color to paint. It was one of my best paintjobs at the time and the first thing I did heading down to that GW game store was show it off. Of course the Dark angel players immediately spotted the trophy and asked, "Is this because of our Dark Angels?" to which I looked at them with a casual smile. "Oh yeah." I replied and we all had a good laugh. So...unfortunately the Warlord is kinda outdated and I have yet to check if he can still be legal, but man...Those were good times and good days.
Mr. Bones, man, I'm such a fan of what you've done here. This 20 part series has taught me so damn much about chapters of Warhammer 40k. I can't thank you enough. I also love how you explained things. It really did feel as though I was talking to a buddy. It just made it all so much easier to digest. I became a fan of Warhammer 40k mostly through promotional art, video games, and toys. I knew very little of the lore and it's thanks to videos like this that I was able to get some idea of Warhammer 40k's backstory. I was immediately drawn to the Salamanders and Raven Guard. I really loved the Salamanders' compassion and thought the Raven Guard was cool as they reminded me of the Navy Seals of Warhammer. But man, the Dark Angels appear to do it all and look cool as hell doing it. I think I've found another favorite chapter.

Okay, I'm a massive DA fan, so I apologize for being that guy, but, his personality change isn't from the forest, it's from his experience. When he smashed his homeworld, killed thousands of his sons, and lost his father, for the first time in the Lion's life, he actually took a moment and realized he lacked communication skills. Almost every problem he has in 30k boils down to, the Lion has bad social skills, and God bless him, he actually acknowledged it. "I failed my father, I fear I failed my brothers, I will not fail my sons." I love this dude, I've been a DA fan for over 2/3 of my life, and I can honestly say, his change in personality is the best thing that could have happened for him. Give me more sassy old gay Charles Dance, and bring on more 30k loyalists. Seriously, we have 30k loyalist marines alive for the first time in the history of 40k. This shit is amazing.
I would love if they did a playable unit that is comprised of some of the Risen characters (GW has already done this type of idea with the Gaunts Ghosts characters). My 2 ideas would be the following.

A lot of people missed that when the Lion awoke, he said openly that he felt weaker BUT that he also stated that he was regaining his strength as time continued.
He would not have been able to decapitate darmon Angron otherwise.
He also parried Angron's attacks directly with his sword. There's no way he would have been able to do it if he hadn't regained his strength.

People hold the ultramarines as the pinnacle of perfection for space marines, but I'd argue that dark angels are the actual pinnacle. They're the first legion of the first primarch, made as the emperor intended before making the other "flavours" with different specialities. The sons of the lion are cold, calculating, ruthless, and efficient in their task. The ultramarines however prefer administration, and many chapters like the white consuls are diplomats and administrators first, and space marines second. They are NOT the perfect marines, as marines were never made for that role.
You could argue that the sons of Dorn are equally perfect, but I'd say that they are too obsessed with defensive actions to actually fight an offensive war. Great for holding a front, but then they fall into a war of attrition and rely on more offensive elements to take the fight to the enemy.
I'm a blood angels main, but I'll argue again that the dark angels were made to be; and are the perfect representation of what space marines were created to be since their inception during the unification wars. Not blueberry pencil-pushers.
Dark angels are as grimdark as you get, and the perfect form of space marine. 100% my second favourite chapter and primarch behind the sons of Sanguinius.

The reason the Dark Angels where the best is because when the Lion was discovered on Caliban the values of the Order went with him. The entire Legion was built on trust, and trust in the Dark Angels was absolute. it ment that if a wing was summoned in battle to apply their specific tactical expertise every single Dark Angel present trusted whomever it was that would command them for the required duration. The legions command structure, just as the Lion himself was not afraid to lose warriors but only at the highest possible cost. Each warrior afterall was a knight, and every knight lost was a loss to the whole. This intense trust and brotherhood given to every warrior is a incredibly powerful building block to create a legion. When Luther on Caliban rebelled against the Emperor the sacred bonds of trust that were at the core of the 1st legion were broken, its why the Dark Angels hunt the Fallen at *Any Cost* Luther with his betrayal tore out the heart that made the Dark Angels formations and battle-tactics possible. Now the Dark Angels see ghost in every corner and the return of El'Johnson is not helping. The lore as we have it right now is that he is incredibly distant to his sons, not helping the paranoia that allready had its sway over the Darrk Angels for millenia.
An idea for a series would be famous successor chapters maybe, second founding or less known chapters would be interesting

I maintain headcanon from within GWHQ that said The Lion arrived in time to defeat Horus alongside Sanguinius and the Emperor, but that he waited in orbit, shrouded by the Warp, waiting to see who would win. By the time he got back to Caliban Luther had heard of this and THAT's the reason the Lion opened fire on the planet and Luther and wrecked everything. The Fallen are not marines who succumbed to the touch of Chaos, but Calibanite warriors who held more loyalty to the Emperor than even Lion El'Jonson.

Always found Luther far more interesting than the Lion who's just an aspy, non-verbal feral child that grew too big. Remember when he was so angry he decapitated his high chaplain by punching his head off? Dickhead. And when he nuked Illyrium on Macragge to find Kurze. Asshole. The Lion Son of The Forest was an entirely necessary PR campaign to avoid the potential trauma for 40k Dark Angels fans when their big daddy came back and started drowning every shrine world in phosphex. The Luther character book is one of the best 30k or 40k stand alone novels. The story is great and the central concept is so cool.

Probably Corvus, because as soon as Lorgar stops being a NEET and comes outside, Corvus is probably going to tear him a new asshole. Lorgar's losing streak to Corvus is legendary at this point.
