I'm a Dark Angel fan, so learning about the Space Wolves has been vital for me (it's so I can insult them accurately). What has instead happened is that I've actually started to like the Wolves, at least in 30k. They have a genuine arc, Leman Russ is great, and as a whole they feel less "WOLF WOLF WOLF" and more like vikings with some wolf influences.

Agreed, when I read the units I thought “ok this is gonna be a stupid chapter and stupid lore with a stupid Primarch” but actually they are badass and are some pretty cool characters. Compared to Ultra marines they feel more aged and primed rather than “my character is better than yours cause he’s THE ULTRA MARINES” with characters like Logan Grimnar the wolves are just based

So I have always viewed the Space Wolves as kind of "Space Punks". You got the rowdy new kids acting extra to get noticed in the scene "Blood Claws", The established crew of said scene "Grey Hunters", The old heads tend to get real possessive of the scene, and kinda speak sharply about the changes "Long Fangs", And then there are the ones that help promote the scene, "Wolf Scouts". The venues are generally run DIY so everyone involved in facilitating the shows, "Wolf Guard", and the Sound Guy is The "Wolf Lord".

Stasis grenade aside, he's on record saying he spends his downtime on Fenris boning villagers and has been kicked out of almost every great company. I think my absolute biggest gripe about the space wolves is that they are known as "werewolf space VIKINGS".... keyword there that apparently GW forgot immediately after they made the decision is viking. Vikings are damn cool and are a very specific type of culture that really just was kind of thrown to the side except for maybe their hair styles. I mean, there are so many cool ways they could have implemented viking culture into what the space wolves do. They could have focused on how vikings were one of the first conquerors to go to unknown lands by fleets of boats for example. There just isn't a lot of viking included in the lore. And when they named everything they have as the "wolf _____" they could have fixed the dullness of that by using viking terminology instead naming everything with the word wolf. They just were not fleshed out in a good way as a Legion. I like leman quite a lot even if I think he can be kind of dumb at times. But a lot of the creative lore decisions were just not well made. It feels like they could have just left out the viking part of their description completely, and honestly I don't think anything would change with the lore. Which is sad, vikings are cool as hell.

    • @whitlocktherevanchist5236
      @whitlocktherevanchist5236 Год назад +10

@Shana Valkyria you're not wrong, but yeah the drinking can cover a lot of cultures and they did make them look like vikings. There are just a lot of other things I think they could have done. It feels like they really locked on to the wolf thing and kind of let the viking portion become an aesthetic thing.

    • @mouthyschannel2474
      @mouthyschannel2474 Год назад +5

I think the Viking thing is really just so the players can roleplay as the chapter without having to do the work of saying what's Viking about them. Like you know for a fact some players really try to embody the themes their Marines represent or even choosing them based on what they like beforehand. You can be goth, militaristic, knightly, then you got that one guy wearing Mjolnir necklaces and wolf t-shirts who sees the most lazy representation of Vikings as 40K figures, branded as wolves to the point of echoing and they go "Omg that's so me". Then you don't need to say what's Viking about them, the player does all the work for ya.

I’d like to have seen the Space Wolves actually use some of the real world lore and history as a basis. Like, being a fleet based chapter primarily, but go to Fenris for important trials and events. Imagine a succcor chapter going full, “accurate” space Viking where they raid and pillage renegade planets, but also aren’t against trading among Humans and Xenos. That would be cool to me.

    • @FrostWolfPack
      @FrostWolfPack Год назад +2

Well in lore Space Wolves have one of the bigest fleets amongs the original legions not counting fed full fleet based chapters like Imperial fist (And black templars) and Ultramarines.

    • @Nervete
      @Nervete 2 месяца назад

They do. But nobody actually READS THE LORE BEFORE TALKING TRASH.
The space wolves have, arguably, the largest Astartes navy belonging to any one chapter, so large the Dark Angels and greater Inquisition working together were unable to stop it during the Months of Shame.
The Space Wolves have a literal oathpact with major organizations within the imperium to serve as bodyguards, such as to House Belisarius, in direct parallel to the historical viking habit of being elite, extremely loyal bodyguards for hire.
Not to mention their more open-minded stance on xenos. They don't love them, but when an Eldar (well, a dead Eldar) told a company of Space Wolves to do a certain thing, their reaction was "Thanks but no, I'm not doing that" instead of "Die"
And when it was clear the Eldar was on to something, they came back and agreed that the Eldar ghost person was right.
I can't think of a viking trope that doesn't exist in 40k's space wolves. The fleet-based thing doesn't really work because Vikings were not nomadic, they usually just went home when they were done. The Space Wolves likewise go on HUGE "great hunts", leaving Fenris for centuries to scorn the enemy and search for their primarch, and they bring back lots of trophies.
What more viking can you ask for? lol

This video was made by someone who got their SW lore third hand. They were not listening very closely because the decision to not like them had already been made. But I do agree on the quite a few of the names. But then the Matt Ward era was not known for naming things well. A large number of the names that double down on flanderization are from that era.

and pretty much everything in space wolves is named wolf, fang or claw or includes one of them in the name.
heresy era space wolves is at least a little better with the names but still not perfect... looking at Varagyr which translates to wolf guard...

My Opinion of Space Wolves is paradoxically Hate and Love. I LOVE so much of their art. The stoic Marines in the blizzard, such a cool look. Their structure makes for great stories of brash young ns into stoic, respected fighters or the lone wolves. But then you go further and you find them obnoxious and annoying. It's like their took all the worst aspects of viking and meshed it with the word wolf and called it a day. They also rank amongst the UM and Imperial Fists for plot armour. It's basically even when they lose they win.
Their players can also be some of the worst.

One thing that I love to do is head-cannon what could be if there was a second draft of what the current cannon is
Subtlety is an art that is lost on the Space Wolves, their weird clarity of theming has become so overabundant that it loses any breath of seriousness whenever they are looked at. For a setting like 40k, where the Orks exist as a serious threat even though barely skin surface deep they are the silliest faction, its quite impressive in a "they fucked up multiple steps monumentally" type of way that the space wolves have hit the opposite as you described
On the surface level the overabundant use of wolves makes them come off as edgy 13 year olds trying to make a faction with about as much creativity as an edgy 13 year old would have, shoving their favorite animal so omnipresently across the ranks that the word loses any and all meaning
*I will say, I just started reading Horus Rising and I have absolutely no clue about anything deeper than what is said in lore videos like this, which just give a general overview of the universe of 40k, so anything I say is from more or less an underdeveloped perspective of 40k
However, I think a good fix for this faction would be to substitute like %90 of its wolf naming convention into other domesticated canines. I know absolutely nothing about the culture and backstory of Fenris, but I have a fascination with speculative evolution videos and the ones that come to mind are of earths creatures being dropped onto planets without complex life and evolving to the point that they are so far diverged from each-other that, common ancestor being one species be damned, they fill entirely different biological niches and are entirely different species
What if the culture around Fenris still coveted the "wolf pack" mentality, but because all dogs are pack animals, its renamed to exactly that, dog packs. What if the original inhabitants of Fenris came with a multitude of different dog species to maintain their camps as well as aid in their hunt. Smaller species of dogs to help catch smaller game that burrow underneath the snow, to keep out rats or rat-like vermin from their caches of food, or to simply act as alarms that you barely have to feed (anyone with a chihuahua knows that those things will bark at their own farts they're so uppity)
Larger dogs would be able to hunt, help travel with sleds, and help defend the camps from any outside threats. There are dogs specially made to fight bears
But think about the cultural implications of it. Mans best friend isn't just a saying. We are both pack species. Warmth and companionship are both resources in the deathly cold of Fenris. And domesticated dogs will give both, unconditionally. From the mightiest of warriors to the most humble of cleaners, having a canine by your side is to have a best friend for life. Even after death, their pelts can be used as insulation, their fur covering every creation of these humans. Clothing, jewelry, homes, not as a desecration of their corpse and a disrespect to their spirit, but as proof of loyalty without match. Their guardianship and aid continues indefinitely, their spirits continue to walk alongside the survivorship of man
But, none of them are wolves
The wolves of Fenris are an external threat. A predator that has learned human settlements are a cache of stockpiled meat, and the living bodies that protect them are just a bonus.
Yellow eyes peer out of the darkness of a blizzard, at first its only a single pair. But more soon appear. Racing footsteps drowned out by the storm, the howling of these hunters creating a cacophony with the howling of the storm. The camp is quickly surrounded, and death is guaranteed
We are lucky to have our companions. To have their fangs and claws by our side. But, who do these wolves serve? What master commands them to attack? Why are our best friends also our greatest predator? (Keeping it in themes with Norse mythology/Vikings all the way)
Only the gods themselves would be able to command such beasts. Even the mightiest of warriors, if still human, do not compare to the raw power these god serving wolves possess
*Again, I would have to read the Leman Russ primarch books to be more accurate to actual 40k, this is just sort of a thought experiment. I know that he is raised by the wolves of Fenris
But, imagine that. For the first time ever, during one of these wolfen raids, you see a 'god' among them. In Norse mythology, the gods are depicted with human bodies, and are basically just super roided up people. This wouldn't just feed that belief, this would be the single catalyst that sparks Russ to be the one seen god of Fenris. Descended from the sky, raised by mankinds biggest predator
Now, skipping through a lot, the people of Fenris are now being recruited to be space marines. Chosen to be demi-gods, angels of Russ that follow in his wake.
The same way that wolves are seen as a more primal, violent and efficient form dogs, the space-wolves would actively celebrate returning to that state of being. After centuries of being hunted, they now become the hunters, the primal predators, or top dogs
But they aren't gods. They aren't taking on aspects of Leman Russ, no, they are taking on the aspect of his wolves. They do not hold command over the companions of their gods, they themselves become part of the gods companions
they do not abandon their mortal pack
It would be the same way that the blood angels sort of get away with having half of their naming convention be different words for blood
The space-wolves could name themselves after the many different species of dogs that they still find their companionship in. It would be less wolf-this wolf-that, and be more canine-this and canine-that
It would be a breath of fresh air, creating what I believe is the intended reverence of wolves that the faction aims for, but not abandoning their strong theme around packs and canines as a whole
Now, this is a crack theory, but what if the space-wolves invested into technology that would uplift their mortal dogs in the same way that they were uplifted into space-marines themselves? Not quite as effective or violent as the process of creating a space marine, and nowhere near the same prowess as a normal wolf on Fenris, but able to keep up with the doings of the space wolves.
Even if its not in combat, and they become more or less companions, the different factions of the space wolves could pay respect to these companions by naming themselves after them
I hope something like this would just make them less, stupid. I mean, if everyone is super, no one will be. If everything is a fucking wolf, whats the point? Wheres the specialty?
I'm sure someone else has had a similar idea to this, this is something that just came up on my morning walk, but man, as a dog lover myself, to have a faction that could theme themselves around many many many different species of dogs would be so cool.

To be fair tho, their lore and names arent meant to be taken as literal as other Chapters. Yes, they are a literal part of the lore in Warhammer...but they arent meant to be seen as seriously as other Chapters like the Ultramarines, or the Blood Angels. Chapters that follow the Codex and live by the strict laws and orders of the Imperium of Man.
Its really just meant to be a fun "viking" version of Space Marines. Like our irl Vikings, they dont comply to Empires, or follow religious dogma set up by Priests in far away lands. They follow their own code of honor, and live by their traditions. What makes them interesting tho, is that despite their distain towards the Codex and other strict Imperium rules/laws they still remain loyal.
Youd think, with the whole Viking aesthetic and general hatred of rules being placed on them, that would just rebel and go Chaos on everyone...but they continue to faithfully serve The Allfather, the Emperor. I think thats why people really love them. Its that they stand apart, but not against.

1: Roboute counted him as one of his most valued friends and Leman, while hating the Codex, gave his support solely because he didn't want to fight anymore brothers (So he's capable of being rational even if he's strongly opinionated.)
2: Next to no one cared about or even liked Angron. Leman wasn't a big fan either, but the fact he decided, of his own accord to try and reason with him, cause he know The Emperor was getting fed up of his shit, and even sacrificed some of his men to prove a point, shows he pitied him more than he hated him.
3: Leman didn't like Magnus. This was obvious. But he still, even when ordered by "The Emperor" to kill him, tried to vox him and even use a spy to contact Prospero. And in the end, Magnus himself states Leman wasn't proud of what happened.
4: Leman only failed to kill Horus for the same reason Big E didn't Thanos Snap him in one go: He loved him so much and saw a brief moment when he could have been saved.
5: Leman doesn't like long-range weapons, but when Vulkan made Scornspitter, he thought it was so cool that he pretty much considered Vulkan the best smith among them. Hell, Fury of Magnus highlights the Salamanders and Wolves have been close for a while.
6: Leman and Crovus, despite being polar opposites, also got on well. Leman defended Corvus' decision not to go to Terra to The Lion and they kicked ass during The Scouring.
7: Leman loved Dorn so much it took Malcador ordering him to leave Terra.
8: He and The Lion have a lot of strained history, but in the end, he would've taken that stab to the chest if it meant helping The Lion mourn. When they finally buried the hatchet, they showed the traitors during The Scouring just how HORRIFYING it is when the First and the Sixth work together.
9: While understandably pissed at the Khan for not helping against the Alpha Legion, he still heard him out, respected his reasoning, and even shared a laugh with him (Seriously he is far more patient than people think he is.)
10: After Monarchia, Leman was one of the few who spoke up and said Lorgar shouldn't be killed (Oddly enough, this was one of the handful of times he and Magnus agreed on something.)

My head cannon is that 'wolf' in all of their designations isn't actually wolf just a word in fenrisian that didn't translate well. Like how Bjorn was known as Bear by the one rememberancer/skald that was in the burning or prospero book

    • @Battlefang

alot of the fenrisian names of the designations can be found at least when looking at the right places. such as varagyr (which is meant to be a play on varangian guards) but when translated from fenrisian into high gothic becomes wolf guard...
and Bjorn (Björn is the correct spelling) means Bear, so the rememberancer technically isn't wrong in refering to Bjorn as Bear

I get that the naming thing is kinda a turn off for a lot of people, I rarely refer to them as "Space Wolves" among other 6th legion fans. As the lore explains, that is an name the outsiders use. One of the things I personally enjoy about them are the vibes. One moment they will be tearing their way through an ork waaagh, the next they will be swigging alcohol that could give a normal man an aneurism. They are very bold and embracing, and will mess with you just to show you how much they care. They do stand out in 40k for a lot of reasons obviously. Viking in space? Yes. Viking werewolves in space? Still yes. And then touching on that, the way they have their psykers work by pulling power from the psychic imprint of Fenrys in the warp instead of chaos tainted warpspace, also pretty cool. They'd make for the most enduring friends, and the most terrifying of enemies. Not to mention what happens when someone is in a dreadnaught and goes wolfen, or the canis helix being an additional factor to their ascension to astartes. By far one of the most prepared legions for the heresy, not just from their experience with (maybe) wiping out the 2nd or 11th legion, but also their cultural traditions of protecting themselves from daemons just through runes or totems or other bobbles. And then is also mentioning the fact that they can make fully grown adults into astartes, because Leman Russ wasn't gonna leave his shield brothers behind when he went to conquer the stars. Granted, very low success rate, still achievable. When their lore is good, it is magnificent, when it isn't, its terribly mid, I understand this. But for me, their are few more attractive aspects of the grim dark than a legion of warriors who will grin at the oncoming apocalypse, before ripping its throat out with their teeth.

You know the Vlka Fenryka are probably my favorite Legion. Because... They were never a chapter. Leman is tied with Rogal Dorn as my favorite Primarchs (I play Imperial Fists). I can not take the naming scheme for them. I don't mind their look. If they named things like Vikings I would blast Sabaton while playing them. But wolf wolf wolf wolf wolf. I can't take it.

In the Audio Compilation Endless Wars; there’s a story where a Space Wolf Drop pod lands in an ocean. The sole survivor is helped into a fishing. Spoiler Alert; the XXth shows up and “Alpharius” wastes him.
The stuff before that is pretty cool though.

@@conradlorgar5508 it was such a cool story. That was my first little snippet of the Allha Legion. I’m finishing “The First Heretic” now. Honestly I really didn’t like it at first, but now the second half has made the first so much more interesting. Realizing that Argel Tal was the reason the Gellar Field protection the Primarchs gestation pods was SUCH a HOLY SHIT moment. Now Tal is remembering each Primarchs landing on their home worlds.

Space wolves as characters can be cool since they can have nuance. But when you group it all together and speak in generalizations its very difficult to see anything except Wolf man go awoooo

Space Wolves is one of the legions that is saved by plot armour. Where other legions would die if they charged headfirst, the Space Wolves win cause they are wild and ferocious, as if that makes any sense.

And yet that same logic doesn’t save the World Eaters from losing in lore at times, truly the pinnacle of GWs writing.

I liked a few parts of their mini end times with the thousand nerds. The part about feral, mad and above all just *angry* “wolves” and tribe members who were just roaming the wastes looking for more invaders to slaughter or be put out their suffering after ending a thousand son or their pawns after having their packs or tribes wiped out was nice.
The part where in the underground area you had “wolves” and dreadnought fighting back fire monsters and burning to death in the process was also cool.

That is just bad writing. Originally the SW were not particularly better at close combat than any other chapter (although they may enjoy it more), and, save the blood claws, they did not went head on to close combat. All the descriptions were describing the "cunning hunter" and "wolf pack" idea, which is quite the opposite of going berserk

If you read any of the Space Wolves novels, you will learn that they, in fact, employ just as much strategy as any chapter, and are far more adaptable.
During all of the 40k SW omnibusses I've read, I can't remember a single blind charge. I remember a lot of naval superiority, fixed defense tactics, infiltration tactics (Ragnar and Sven pretending to be orks piloting a trukk was hilarious *and* practical), and kill-team insertions.

If they kept to viking culture like the white scars did to mongolian culture they would be cooler. Or they could finally acknowledge that there are more than wolves in the artic zones.
Rn i like the dark kraken more for viking stuff than the space wolves.

Aside from liking the Space Wolves mostly because I like Wolves and Vikings. I like how the Space wolves with charge head long in to battle with a smile on their face and fire in their hearts and to me that means a lot. You are facing the horrors of Warhammer, You better do it with enough passion as the Fucking Space wolves do to think they will come out of it alive and to have stories told of their conquest for generations to hear and to me Legends never die.
