The Grey Knights should be the very embodiment of the all that's best about the Astartes ( who are in the words of the Emperor 'the defenders of humanity' ), right down to not allowing Inquisitors to wipe out uncorrupted loyalists, sadly their writing is generally bad because it apparently has to be grimdark ( such as wiping out the sisters for no sensible reason, fighting the Space Wolves because an Inquisitor with questionable authority says so, or killing innocents who 'know too much' ).
Much like the Custodes, they were also never conceived in the game as being an Army in their own right, originally they were meant to be a small elite unit to drop on a Greater Deamon/Avatar like a bomb for Imperial forces.

I've always imagined the Grey Knights as having strength in between the regular Astartes and Custodes, as they are classified in lore as Sanctic Astartes instead of Adeptus Astartes, as well having tougher and more rigorous training in comparison to the other Astartes. I do understand the unappeal of having Spacier Marines that are better just because, and I do hope that their lore is written in a way to make them earn that Spacier Marines title. Hel, I'd even do it myself if I had experience writing at all lol

    • @Streygenmoment

Also if it makes you feel better, the Grey Knights on tabletop are just worse than other astartes in general. They are basically a shooting army without the shooting, as their melee is alright but nothing better than anyone else's, and they have no good shooting weapons for their infantry. I view Grey Knights (which I also play) as an over specialized force meant to deal with a specific threat and nothing else. Their gear is so tailored to deal with demonic forces that to be used in any other setting other than to smash demons to paste makes them look like generic space marines in overly polished war gear. Like a Grey Knight Grand Master could be using a master crafted, finely inscribed, thrice blessed, dipped in the blood of saints, thunder hammer so holy that to even look at it makes demons explode. But against orks, tau, eldar or some human that blinked when he should have ran, its just a lead weight on a stick.

The Emperor's Gift is an excellent read and now on audible for those that prefer audiobooks. It's a slower-burn than other ADB stories. I found the pacing drew me closer to the main characters such that the things they eventually see and do hit harder than the usual bolter-porn action that can be absorbed at a distance. He quite literally places the reader inside the minds of the main characters as much of the dialogue between them is done psychically. So, communication isn't just restricted to words and largely incorporates touches of images, emotions, etc. It's a good book.

The Grey Knights are essentially just loyalist Thousand Sons. Their gene seed obviously comes from Magnus despite what the lore says, because the Emperor clearly doesn't have gene seed since he's neither a Primarch nor even an Astartes and only Magnus's gene seed has the properties of the Grey Knights, making almost all recipients into psykers. The Grey Knights aren't (or shouldn't be) the best at everything: they're just the best psykers among the Space Marines, with an exclusive focus on fighting Chaos, especially demons, and that's all. If you really like the Thousand Sons but you want to play loyalists then the Grey Knights are your guys. GW / Black Library needs to get somebody on the Grey Knights who knows how to write. They look amazing and just need some better stories about them.

Going off of you mentioning how Grey Knights are the better overall Space Marines, there is a story (I know, writers can be inconsistent with portrayals, as you mentioned) of the Grey Knights getting shit-stomped by the Space Wolves in something called the Months of Shame. Their recruitment comes from taking members from other chapters and further breaking them down mentally and physically just to remake them into stronger warriors. So you're taking someone that was already broken down and had parts of their personality burned away to make a super soldier and you're doing it again, but more brutally. Poor knights don't even have memories of their childhood, if their lucky they have faint echoes of their past. I enjoy the theory that each Supreme Grand Master of the Grey Knights hosts the Noble Shard of Magnus. Instead of the shard having died along with Janus, it just possessed the next Supreme Grand Master and continues to do so. Which would give at least some plausibility to how Kaldor Draigo could have gone up against Mortarion.

I love the grey knights I think them being "better" then other Astartes comes down to the fact that they are all space wizards with all the positives and negatives that entails
I can see in a fucked up way why they can kill greater daemons far easier then normal heretic Astarte's since their gear is designed to hunt Daemons, It makes sense they can crush daemons that normal marines would struggle against but have a far harder time killing normal traitors since they special anti daemon gear is far less effective.
I kind of like that since it makes them seem like the specialists they are meant to be rather then just better space marines

A custodes remarks that without them being psykers (since they were fighting alongside Custodes, and therefore Sisters Of Silence), they're JUUUST a bit better than standard Astartes in combat, due to their focus in teamwork, and working together in small groups against hordes is practically their schtick.
I doubt they could hold a siege as well as Imperial Fists, do taxes like Ultramarines, or sneak behind you like Raven Guard, though.

I love the aesthetic, especially in the artworks since the minis are kinda outdated with those bulimic thigh, and I don't really see them as just another chapter but better. I like how their psychic trait is more oriented towards channeling it through their weird weapons or in a defensive way, while having the classical sorcery represented better in the thousand sons. I'm ok with there being a top secret psychic chapter that excels against daemons and as a result are on average better than other SM. Too bad their lore is all over the place and mostly sucks.

Another case of why trying to powerscale anything in 40k is a futile effort. Each BL and Codex writer is working off their own headcanon on that and GW doesn't care as long as the models sell. Characters are as powerful as the plot needs them to be which gets crazy with the authors that dont understand the meaning of restraint.
Which isn't helped by the fact that there are several characters who are essentially immortal so them getting beaten doesn't change anything major. The Avatar of Khaine, Grearer Daemons, Daemon Primarchs and the Tyranid Swarmlord all have enough notable losses to put a sizeable dent in their perceived threat level.

like yes army wise, tech wise, gene wise, psychic wise they are one of if not THE best space marine chapter to exist ever...there's really only one group of marines that can compete with them and that's thousand sons, and even there the comparison is just a wizard duel and daemonology mastery
AND THATS WHERE IT SHOULD BE. Grey Knights are the guys you send out for a daemon prince, a daemon primarch, a daemon world ect ect... if it has anything to do with a large scale daemonic influence the GK's should show up and just be absolute monsters WITH THE CAVEAT that because of their secrecy, and their elitism, the numbers they bring in...like the tabletop, are fewer than other responses.

The problem with the Grey Knight is that the Adeptus Custodes exist now, and the Custodes really do the whole "Hyper Elite Super Marines" thing better than the Grey Knights ever did. And I say this as someone who fucking loves the Grey Knights. Mostly because I'm a huge fan of the Paladin archetype in fiction, and the Grey Knights are all about that paladin archetype, from their helmets that resemble knightly great helms, to their whole "shining silver armor" aesthetic.
If I were writing these guys, I'd lean into the idea that these are Traitor Legion Marines who chose to stay Loyalist, and give them a complex about this that leads to them seeking martyrdom even more than other Astartes. Every Grey Knight knows that they are kin to traitors, and every other Astartes does too. They should specialize in fighting Warp Entities (Daemons, Psykers, etc.), but struggle against horde armies due to their focus on slaying monsters and sorcerers.
If I were in charge of the next Grey Knight codex. . . I wouldn't write one. I'd fold them into the Inquisition Codex instead, and move their HQ units to elites or something similar, so that every Grey Knight army needs to be led by an Inquisitor. Make them an MEQ troops option for Inquisition armies or something.

Honestly I like the Grey Knights because futuristic super soldiers in knight armour fighting demons with power swords is a really cool aesthetic. The main problem with them is how they were/are handled in the lore with their main character stndrome and such. But still I personally just think having a middle ground between space marines and custodes being neat, partly justified with their niche being nigh uncorruptable psykers whose job it is to fight demons but... I understand other people's disliking of them since the space marines but better part of them does add to the "im specihul" aura around them. Do I have a point or am I just an outlier?

The grey knights are all right, I actually enjoy their stories. While in the lore it is said they are great combatants and are the only deamon specific chapter of space marines and are all powerful psykers they are not actually that much better than a regular Librarian or much better at fighting then a marine. In fact when they say they are the hammer it’s quite literal they use their psychic power to bludgeon their enemies, against a skilled practitioner like a thousand son or a great sorcerer they are kinda useless. They don’t fight Orks they don’t fight tyranids and they don’t fight necrons and they don’t mix their battles. The grey knights unlike most of the imperium is singularly focused on one enemy and that’s chaos meaning all that training they take is just to fight chaos better they would be bodied by a waagh and that’s alright. If it’s not a warp entity then their debuffs they apply to warp entities don’t transfer to regular marines so the death guard doesn’t like them but it doesn’t mean they lose. on the other hand mortarion is a deamon so he’s being constantly pushed away from the plane of existence by just their presence where a sister of battle’s incorruptibility hymns and chants manifest themselves with strength a grey knights faith is their armor. So I disagree grey knights do one thing better then any other chapter and that’s hunt Deamons. In lore grimnar killed a couple because they were in his way and it was easy cause grimnars not a deamon they can’t weaken him or banish him so they died cause again they’re not actually great fighter on anything else then deamons. Why do you think every story is about them is them fighting the immaterial it’s because they would get roffle stomped by any other fight. Their writing is trash though and they need help but it’s not any worse than abbadons 12 failure crusades being just as planned or a group of harlequins massacring custodians.

Heres why I "like" the grey knights. They have the coolest realistic "knight" aesthetic with the actual silver and gold armor (that are all terminators), specialized polearms, and awesome helmets. I also like that they are ALL super-psykers that CAN permanently end some daemons. I do, admittedly, like the idea that they are "better" than other chapters of space marines...because they are supposed to be. They do not fight anything except chaos threats. They are special operations units for a reason...like the custodes. Are they custodean level? ABSOLUTELY HELL NO. But are they just slightly better than normal, run of the mill space marines? Yes, but not by too much, and that's all they need. I feel like it's justifiable to say that if 10 space marines in highly advanced terminator armor, who had extensive training on how to fight in that armor, were to fight against 10 normie ultra-smurfs in normie power armor, the grey knights would win 8 to 9 times out of 10, just for their gear and training. If 15 space marines fought 10 grey knights, then it would be different. That's just an example, though.
OTHER THAN THOSE THINGS, they are written horribly and absolutely the conspiratory poster-child of GW that someone really really really wanted to win the "my OC is better than urs" prize for. And that's not fun.

Grey Knights are often overlooked as specialists. They’re good at fighting daemons (notice how each of the super powerful entities they swing above their weight against are always daemons), but not nearly as good at fighting other threats. They can lose and they are by no means the best at everything. Ward era writings shouldn’t be taken as canon.
Also primarchs could use to be knocked down a peg(even though the draigo thing is definitely stupid) and I like the idea that they aren’t the invulnerable gods they were made out to be in myths recanted from over 10,000 years ago.

I actually made my own legion based on one of the missing primarchs
My Legion is called the Disciples Annihilus
Their Primarch is like a super massive actually benevolent like father figure burly Scottish man with a majestic red Beard and well taken care of red hair with a mullet like hairstyle and eyes that emerald like in both color and sheen with an opal esque sheen.
His gestation pod crash landed in what was pre-death-world kreig which in my history I came up with for pre-death world kreig is that it was heavily steeped in corrupt beaureuocrasies and oligarchs which he lead a resistance against and took over becoming more of like a global leader that most on the planet would turn to for advice on matters regarding their world and visits from people from other systems.
Eventually he’d be United with his sons while on a diplomatic trip to a nearby system and meet with the Emperor (aka his Big Uber Powerful God Dad) and go crusading for a while but in his absence kreig would fall into dismay without his leadership theyd rebel leading to the imperium having to nuke it into compliance. Then when the Horus Heresy Came around and feeling like he didn’t do enough to ensure the safety of the Emperor while engaged in the war where the Horus and His traitor legions were fighting the imperium and feeling like he also failed his own people on krieg.
After the emperor was interred on the golden throne he requested that any information and records on himself and his sons associated with him were to be expunged and his existence removed from the annals of The history of the imperium and his men reassigned to other chapters/legions so they wouldn’t have to also bare his shame nor be mocked by their peers from other heraldries.
Then he would venture off into parts unknown into self exile because of his shame. Waiting just in case even though he doubts it the imperium would have use for him again or even welcome him back.
Thus making him one of the missing primarchs of the unknown legions.
He had 4 particular unique traits
One that was a pretty substantial self healing factor He could basically with his bare body zero armor for quite a while shrug off many kinds of non warp-based munitions fire and many kinds of damage (to an extent but not a ridiculous one) He could get his arm blown off and within like a couple months grow it back (barring any complications).
He was/is quite resistant to chaos corruption.
He basically would go into blood rages during combat , the more time he spent killing the more effective and agressive in combat he would become , he’d be passively powered by the warp basically , with little to no actual ill effects but the use of this for him did come at a price it had a lingering effect on the body after combat that caused severe pain that required sedatives to ease and to get said pain to cease all together.
He had a knack for both conventional and unconventional tactics and was a very good strategist.
He is rather charismatic and open to diplomacy even with non-hostile xenos races but not to the extent he will forsake Imperial doctrine. He believes there is a place for xenos on the planets of the imperium but they will be and should expect to be expected to follow The Imperiums laws and Regulations. (he sees it as necessary to the survival of humanity.)
Any xenos that refuses he believes is not deserving of their place in the universe. Because to live in spite and conflict with the Imperium is to live as one who creates new and more terrifying warp entities with ones unchecked beliefs that could be a far greater danger to all greater than the danger of and probably even a danger to the ruinous powers. Because the warp makes and unmakes things based on a substantial number of living souls believing and or not believing on the existence or concept of that one thing.
His sons only got the first trait to the extent that their bare flesh was incredibly resistant to many kinds of damage but would give in under contiguous pressure (considerably less than their father could handle)
The Second Trait they completely retained
The 3rd Trait they Also retained.
The 4th trait they are just as charismatic as him and more diplomatic and whole heartedly take what their primarch believes as guiding doctrine.

Yeah I’ve always felt that the grey knights being of the emperor’s geneseed is a bit weird because I don’t think that’s how gene seed works? But like also at the same time the Custodes are literally right over there

Looking like the deathwatch is the clear choice for the 11th video.

The pitch that sells the Grey Knights to me is this, "imagine the doomslayer multiply-classed into a paladin and wore a tank as armor with a brick shithouse knight aesthetic and a pension for the extra. Now make that a whole faction, with each member being their own variation of the doomslayer."
Personally I'm a sucker for really tanky Paladinesc magic users of the more frail mage aesthetic, I really like a non-overexagerated knight look, and a bunch of doomslayers that are actually pretty cool with the non-hostile xenos is fun and different and gives some cool depth. Also disliking them for being the fan-fic op faction when the Custodes exist isn't really fair, especially given they're essentially a half-way between Custodes and standard marines that specialize in messing up daemons, that even holds up in lore given the relationship/rivalry between the 2.

Important to remember GW's stated newer stance on the broader WH canon when we discuss the Grey Knights: Everything is canon, not everything is true.

I have the Sonic OC issue you brought up, but with Custodes.
They're just too obviously Golden Special Best Space Marines. "Each hand-crafted by athe Emperor himself!"
    It turns me off completley.
I don't have that with The Grey Knights, so this was interesting :)
Maybe becuse I never engaged in specific stories of thier lore? Perhaps I DO see them as having a niche that they excell at?
(The Chaos Gate game has also recently reinforced how BADLY outnumbered they always are. Always vulnerable. Every mission is one mistake away from losing the whole squad)

I mean, lore aside i do dig the brushed steel armor and incredibly sick medieval helmet design. To my tastes they're probably the best looking chapter of the bunch, even if their writing sucks.

Personally, I think that the grey knights should be more or less equal to a regular marine in a fistfight, but above and beyond to ludicrous degrees in a daemonhunt. The grey knights should be written as a specialized force, becoming much more than the sum of their parts when facing any kind of warpspawn. I think that a few scenes showing the contrast between how well-equipped grey knights are to deal with daemons compared to how little their unique wargear and specializations help against other foes would really help with their presentation as a fraction.
just having the grey knights be flat-out better than regular marines feels like a failure of imagination. I am honestly fine with Kaldor Draigo beating Mortarion, so long there is a damn good explanation of the kind of insane bullshit and specifically counter-daemonic tools he had to employ to win. Grey knights should not be beating greater daemons in straight slugfests, they should be chanting their foes true name to weaken them, performing litanies and rituals to drive back the powers of the warp, baiting the demons into inevitably futile attempts to corrupt or possess them and actually using all of that specialization, rather than just mindlessly swinging the big halberds
They do look really cool, tho.

While the Gary Sue-ing is.. well not good
I just love the idea of these guys, the last act of vengeance by a fallen god
Plus I played a ton of Chaosgate which REALLY sells them
