The Black Legion as protagonists is one of the most fun ways to read the 40k canon. From their perspective, they're the only people who understand how the warp and the galaxy works, and conversely are the only ones just sane enough that they can effectively utilize that information.
@@totalNERD-eo7wx The Iron Warriors represent one extreme of how to utilize the Warp, that being ruthlessly, soullessly exploiting the Warp's power, creating incredibly powerful machines and weapons from it, all for ultimately materialistic or petty, if not downright trivial reasons. I would love to see chaos warband of sons of Horus, but I also like black legion very much because with them I can use combined arms warfare with all 9 chaos legions working together
Sadly, I do not know who wrote this, but I think the last line is relevant: "I haven't started playing 30k yet, but would someone explain why an alpha strike army that can field banestrike-combi-weapons is not as competitive as any other army? Certainly there are better general styles, bolter proficiency, survive-ability, or sheer brutality, but as the fluff states the Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus aren't about that. They drop on-top of their targets and kill them. Droppods, Nuncio-voxs, and vicious application of mid-range firepower. We fail in protracted campaigns, our skills are not that of subterfuge, simple killing power or endurance, we have more finesse than that. We are deepstrikers, and today's space marines has as much to owe to the Luna Wolves strategies as they do to Gulliman's codex."
The Black Legion is what happens when you take "The Alliance" trope, and turn it on it's head, making them the villains. Diversity! Equity! Inclusion! The difference is that the Black Legion actually means it! They do not care who (or what) you are, or what you do, if there is a role for you to play on the battlefield, there is a place for you among them. Welcome to The Long War! I hate the Word Bearers! I love to hate the Word Bearers! But it is easy to hate the Word Bearers. The Black Legion ... not so much, they actually have a point!
Hey people, I have a question? What are the guys who are usually in meat hooks and missing limbs in nearly every depiction of chaos? Are they daemon hosts or something else. They don't seem demonic (execpt the one that live as a half torso.
Just some unlucky sods the maintenance people thought would be better as decoration. Sometimes they’re trophies, maybe it’s to appease their patron god or for any other crazy reason.
It varies. If it's a collection of skulls they're trophies, often tributes to Khorne but not always. If it's a half-flayed cadaver probably some Slaaneshy marines enjoying torture have left them behind. If they're crucified or several are arranged in a strange pattern it's probably a sorcerer doing a ritual.
Won't the Death Guard spread disease to the rest of the Black Legion members? How are they coherent enough to resist full Chaos manipulation to band toghter and not turn on each other.
For all the shit abbadon gets for being a terrible antagonist I for once think he is a great character..dude was just a space marine to begin with yet he has successfully been more efficient than any traitor primarch ever could..give him his flowers
The Black Legion is undermined by the fact that they are the bog standard Chaos force. They are like the mirror image of the Ultramarines, but where the blue berries are the post child for the winning team, the BL are most often expect3d to take the L.
The Black Legion is my 40k army. It was my first and largest 40k collection. Because in a setting where no one is the good guy, I wanted to play the baddest of the bad guys. Not to mention, black and gold is the best paint scheme.
I tried writing a fanstory about a black legionairre who joined the legion to overthrow the imperium out of genuinly good intentions and leaves, before going on a journey with his former brothers to rid himself of his literal ptsd. I kinda experimented with the idea of multiple kinds of chaos warriors, and i think it worked out more or less fine, but my takes on warhammer are a TTS-Level shitpost and Abaddon basically has 4th wall awareness in the books, so i am not entirely sure if i will ever share that shit. Still, the black legion would make for interesting protagonists of a story. I havent yet read too much of the books, but i am still curious. What is, like, the best thing about them? Question to the fandom
I own a good few Chaos Marine warbands and beside the Death Guard and Thousand Sons, I need a way to tell 'em all apart. So while I look for ways to lean on specific elements of them to make them not just be CSM in different coats of paint, I mostly just do the Black Legion as they are on the box, but periodically do something to reference a guy coming from another legion. For example, since my Word Bearers are mostly old CSM, I put an old CSM head on one of my Black Legionaires to connect him to the Word Bearers, while my icon bearer has pale skin and black eyes since he's an ex-Night Lord. That's the kind of storytelling I like, but hopefully there's some more upgrade kits like the new Night Lords one to make it easer to add character to them.
Did you recently speed up your videos or something? It seems like the narration pace is rushed and its a little jarring... nothing like what I'm used to.
What happens to a chaos spacemarine when he dies in battle? Just respawn in the warp? Example: I know there are veterans from the the great crusade/heresy in the ranks of most traitor legions in 40k, my question is how do they refill their ranks after set battles in the Timeline, and what happens upon death to a single traitor marine. tentacle boi Lucius steals your body if you defeat him in single combat ( and enjoy it?). What about the grunts? In the space marine game they despawn when killed lol. I’m really curious…
Depends on what exposure/pacts with Chaos the marine has. Lucius is one example but that kind of respawn is unique, most other instances of this kind are for Marines that have become Daemon princes so they’re basically Daemons with all the rules that entails. Pretty much all the rest of Chaos Marines will stay dead when they die unless something special takes place.
Also apart from looting where do they get their equipment from? Do they have the dark mechanicum in the Eye of terror (or somewhere ) manufacturing their bolters tanks do they steal/trade from the iron warriors? So many questions lol
@@Mr305miamivice Dark Mechanicus Forge worlds are a valuable commodity in the Eye. They tend to be neutral in supplying any warbands that come to trade with them.
The black legion and especially Abbadon feel so harmless for 40k standards. It took him 13 trys to get past one planet and in all books I have read where the black legion is mentioned or are a part of they fail and need to retreat.
And in their defense, Cadia was possibly the most heavily fortified world in the imperium with a population whose trade was exclusively war. Several space marine chapters patrolled the area and they had Creed, pretty big accomplishment to do it at all.
If I was ever to build a black legion army I'd probably kitbash together or just sprinkle in some of the chaos god unique marines to really sell the fact that they are a bunch of different kinds of marines working together.
I know I am super wierd here because I actually really like Abby. I think a lot of if issues stem from the writers and not his character him self. It’s not really his fult that he acts differently between books because it’s clear that’s the writes. Same with the 13 black crusades. If you read the black legion books they don’t number them because this is one long war to the black legion but the imps number them. It’s kind of why heron black heart is so liked he only in 3 books he dose not have to be the bad guy that’s always forced to lose. This bad writing is though out 40k for example in the second black legion book Abby gets hurt really bad by sigy the first Chapter master of the black templares which is dumb they should have let Abby win because it would have brought the character story around because Abby lost in the siege of Terre books. I like the idea of the black legion and how they are all brothers working together that’s what you get if you read the black legion books but that has not really translated into the codex’s so it makes them look like massive hypocrites which sucks a lot when we seen others have that happened. You can say this is all cope and I did make a hole video about this topic on my channel but this is my pov and I really like them much more then even the night lords. I think there is a compelling idea behind them and if they had better writing the fan base would change their mind much like the ultras.
It’s a shame that the Sons of Horus legion needed to be as mega-killed as Horus himself. Replacing their awesome sea-green armor with generic black, is just plain awful. I realize there are lore reasons for this. But I don’t have to like it.
There still are some who survived both the Legion wars and Abby's persecution, such as the True Sons and the Wolves of Horus. Shame they aren't given more of a spotlight; it would be cool to have some more inter-Chaos politicking with the gradually rebuilding Sons of Horus leading a faction in opposition to their treacherous former first captain.
The Black Legion to me is wasted potential. I think they should've been direct descendants of the Sons of Horus first and foremost but that as the direct descendants of the Sons of Horus, their diplomacy and ability to unite other CSM attracts other traitor warbands. As well they just fall flat on their face lore wise. They're usually just the guys that end up being the cannon fodder the hero's fight through and that's just dumb. They have nothing going for them from a practical marine standpoint: they aren't primaris marines, they don't have better gear or supplies than the Imperium, they're mostly just pirates and their quality as marines is less than loyal marines. I think at the very least for them to remain relevant they should always have an element of the clever in them. They're 10,000 year old veterans, even those that aren't that old but were born, raised and turned into marines in the eye of terror should be first company veteran levels of skill, because even in the eye of terror the Horus Heresy and Great Crusade has never ended, it only has evolved into wars 10x worse than the Imperium deals with. Every battle is a battle for a daemon world or a marine world or a mechanicum world or a combination of 2 or all 3 of these and they fight these wars with what they can get their hands on, not steady supply lines
I think my comment got youtube termed because i got a liiiittle carried away with how much i hate Abaddon's hair....i REALLY hate Abaddon's hair. What is that? God it's stupid
Oh boy the Chaos Gruel, the bland flavorless stew of the Chaos Legion, where every character is a carbon copy of each other, the embodiment of literally everything wrong with Chaos’ implementation in 40K compared to fantasy.
It would have been so much more interesting if the legions revolted not because they were worried when the great crusade was over they would be ruled by bureaucrats but instead they were worried that they would share the same rate as the thunder warriors and be decommissioned/replaced making them fighting for jhst their right ro survive but by doing this they had to commit atrocities. Would have made it a lot more gray area and nuanced war than the chaos legions bad and space Marines good
I'd be more of a fan of the Black Legion if not for Abadon. Talk about a dood that has failed upwards. Not helping is how GW has been pushing so hard to convince people to take him seriously.

Soooo..I can play with Thousand Sons and Night Lords together?Hmmm...
I just like them because Black and gold is the best color scheme and Abaddon is a baller fuckin’ name regardless of context. I have no other reasons.
@Mr.Bones40k wanna ask you if you are going to make a video about the Crimson Slaughter ?
yeah actually!
I love the Crimson Slaughter
@@TheBoneZone40k they brought me in 40k many years ago (Dark vengeance box) the first big 40k kit as a present!
Primaris marines fighting old marines is always great to me
IM NO HERETIC!!!!! SHUT UP AND GIVE ME 40 THOUSAND WAR HAMMERS!!!!!
Sadly, I do not know who wrote this, but I think the last line is relevant:
"I haven't started playing 30k yet, but would someone explain why an alpha strike army that can field banestrike-combi-weapons is not as competitive as any other army?
How ironic that the Black Legion's tactical flexibility is exactly what the Legions all being different was supposed to work out as.
Abaddon: Would? Or Would not?
5:57 image is from the Lionel Heresy AU made by Paint_Newb (who also made the art for it)
Won't the Death Guard spread disease to the rest of the Black Legion members?
How are they coherent enough to resist full Chaos manipulation to band toghter and not turn on each other.
WHEN RED CORSAIRS?
"Eh-zeh-kyle" it's the only name pronunciation I well-actually about because I like it so much.
THE LOOOONG WAYYY
For all the shit abbadon gets for being a terrible antagonist I for once think he is a great character..dude was just a space marine to begin with yet he has successfully been more efficient than any traitor primarch ever could..give him his flowers
I'm convinced abaddon haters haven't actually read any of the novels or codexs. He's an awesome character and a great villain.
Well I binge everything in a month. Now I either decide to give you money or wait more..... Frick. Where my wallet.
I dunno, I think I root for chaos, to a certain point, but Abaddon is a bit of a tool.
5:30 i nearly spit out my drink LOL
Same 😂😂😂😂
Mentioning Erebus without saying "fuck erebus" his a bit different ngl
The Black Legion is undermined by the fact that they are the bog standard Chaos force. They are like the mirror image of the Ultramarines, but where the blue berries are the post child for the winning team, the BL are most often expect3d to take the L.
Oh hell yeah 😎 Mr. Bones lore vid!
GOD I LOVE THE BLACK LEGION LETS GO CHADBADON RAAAHHH
bro was the first to comment
The Black Legion is my 40k army. It was my first and largest 40k collection. Because in a setting where no one is the good guy, I wanted to play the baddest of the bad guys. Not to mention, black and gold is the best paint scheme.
I am never going to forget what Abaddon did to my boy Talos
Do you think you could do the True Sons Warband next?
So sad this is only a hour old... when he said a part 2 and maybe a part 3 I immediately checked when he posted this 😂
I love your videos please don’t stop (seriously)
Huh, never knew Iskandar went up against a squad of Grey Knights, baller as hell. No wonder people say he’s overpowered.
Great take on the Bad News Bears of Warhammer.
Totally unrelated comment : perfect name for a Warhammer channel? "DearHenry". You know why.
🔥🎸🔥
They are the reason i got into 40k
Did you recently speed up your videos or something? It seems like the narration pace is rushed and its a little jarring... nothing like what I'm used to.
Can you cover krypton in mos?
@@Mr305miamivice
Looting and Dark Mechanicus.
@@Mr305miamivice Dark Mechanicus Forge worlds are a valuable commodity in the Eye. They tend to be neutral in supplying any warbands that come to trade with them.
@collecter343 @collecter343 @jonharrison9222 thanks guys my head Canon was spinning like a hamster wheel lol
You can NOT just tease me with that info dump and not make a half hour (bare minimum) video elaborating on those topics you touched on.
GW proving they don't discriminate...
Brother Bones I'm still working on the loyal sons for the 40K setting and have decided to use Dark angel rules for them just makes sense in my mind
They’re definitely the Ultramarines of Chaos: important but boring.
This good
The black legion is like..
Eh
The black legion and especially Abbadon feel so harmless for 40k standards. It took him 13 trys to get past one planet and in all books I have read where the black legion is mentioned or are a part of they fail and need to retreat.
The black crusades were not all focused on Cadia one didn’t even involve the imperium they kidnapped an ork waaaaghhh
Bro it's been over 22 years. the black crusades were not failures for Abby.
And in their defense, Cadia was possibly the most heavily fortified world in the imperium with a population whose trade was exclusively war. Several space marine chapters patrolled the area and they had Creed, pretty big accomplishment to do it at all.
Abaddons gonna shit himself when he hears about the lion
The 13 black crusades all achieved different goals. Only the 13th was a direct assault on cadia.
If I was ever to build a black legion army I'd probably kitbash together or just sprinkle in some of the chaos god unique marines to really sell the fact that they are a bunch of different kinds of marines working together.
Skaven yet?
What if they were callled the brap legion, id lol personally 👾
You think you're a real gassy legionnaires?
Ah, GW's favorite faction
They try so hard to make the fandom like them but it back fires severely.
Failbaddon will never be an enjoyable character. Just rip his arms off and let literally any other chaos champion be in charge.
@ethanduncan1646 Like Huron Blackheart?
@goni2493 love that Pirate Captain
got to say I love your content but your choice in background music makes me want to claw my eyes out
I know I am super wierd here because I actually really like Abby.
Iron snakes please 🙏
As someone who just started getting into the miniatures and choosing this legion, it'd be nice to see two or three more parts
Put poo init
hi arthur
It’s a shame that the Sons of Horus legion needed to be as mega-killed as Horus himself. Replacing their awesome sea-green armor with generic black, is just plain awful.
I realize there are lore reasons for this. But I don’t have to like it.
There are splinter warbands of SoH that didn't get incorporated into Black Legion. They still wear green.
Black legion wre like ultramarines. I get it but not for me
The Black Legion to me is wasted potential.
I think the Black Legion are one of the most interesting factions in 40k and Abaddon gets WAY too much shit all because of some stupid memes.
I think my comment got youtube termed because i got a liiiittle carried away with how much i hate Abaddon's hair....i REALLY hate Abaddon's hair. What is that? God it's stupid
It's a hair squig obviously.
@@Aceshot-uu7yx There are like a million explanations, and out of all of them, that's the LEAST idiotic one
Failbaddon the Armless leader of black Legion.
You're so funny and original.
