I just stumbled upon this game. Never played table top before, because it's crazy expensive! But the Pricing for Armies is affordable!(atleast for me) Because the model count is low. I'm really thinking about seeing if I can find a few buddies to go splits with!
"Tabletop" is not crazy expensive, per se. The big ones everyone knows, like Warhammer 40.000, published by Games Workshop, are expensive. I started playing Battletech a few months ago which is really affordable, especially in comparison to GW. Want to have a look at simplified rules, whether you like the gameplay loop at all? Beginner Box is ~25€. Only two models, though, but still, it's really cheap. Want to try the full rules for Mechs? A Game of Armored Combat-Box is ~65€. There is a lot more depth to the rules in other publications, but this gets you started. Eight models, too, which is enough for two players to spend a full day playing. You need about 3-6 models per player, btw, not 50-100. Boxes of Mechs have between 4-6 models and cost 25-35€. The rules have been largely stable for 40 years. No invalidating your army book every 3-4 years. There are construction rules for units. Every official unit was constructed with these rules, not arbitrarily costed by a play testing team of varying competence. The construction rules are not perfect, of course, but you are not required to use them. There are literally *thousands* of official variants. You could also try Alpha Strike: Same Setting, same models, faster play with more models (10-15 per player), but far less detail. Closer to other tabletop wargames with free movement you need to measure and 3D terrain; "classic" Battletech is hex-based. The Alpha Strike Boxed Set sets you back ~75€ and gets you 13 models as well as some cardboard terrain.
