- Trench Crusade is a skirmish-scale tabletop miniatures game created by Mike Franchina, an illustrator who worked on games such as Path of Exile, Diablo 4, and System Shock 3, as well as Tuomas Pirinen, a Finnish game designer. The world they imagined was one where the battle between Heaven and Hell has found its way into the year 1914, 800 years after the war began following the First Crusades, when a heretical band of Templars defied the Almighty, put aside their vows, and opened the Gates of Hell upon the world. The result is a grimdark universe of such in-depth and exceptional lore that I felt it was worth taking a deeper dive into this world for both me and curious viewers like you.

Just don't talk about the religions (especially Abrahamic religions) unless it's to say they're also the bad guys in a setting where their the ones fighting the demons as they pour forth to slaughter humanity.

The Demonic forces parallel the Chaos forces in WH, even down to the designs of some of them, eg Khornite Demons etc.
Trench Pilgrims and the Church forces draw HEAVILY from the Ecclisarchy in WH40K, complete with soldiers with religions icons on their backs, religious artefacts being used, literal angels walking around, Prussians having a similar demeanour to the Krieg etc. Shit, even the Paladins being clones of Jesus is a reference to 40K with some space marine chapters being clones of their primarch, who in themselves are clones from Big E himself.

Apologies, as it is my own fault. The statement is not made in reference to the in-world themes and religious symbology directly.
It is a reference to the hostility of Trench Crusader's online community should the religious factions be spoken of positively as a moral "good" with relation to the evil of the demonic factions. Saying as much tends to result in chastising or an outright ban from official servers.
I was curious about the Iron Sultanate. Creating homunculi and automatons to fight such forces only makes sense.

The knights Templar was actually founded in 1099 on July 15 after the siege of Jerusalem. The placed their encampments on the temple mound hence the name Templar. 1118AD was the date it was recognized as an official order heraldic knighthood by the Pope

Warhammer has a very specific image and flavor to its world. Inspired by bunches of stuff? Sure. But no one inspi made them build a religiously psychotic grimdark space sims but the creators. This game is absolutely taking direct inspo from Warhammer, which practically invented the genre of "Religious space war Simulator". And that's ok. This game doesn't seem similar. It is. I like the smaller scale and timelines. Less noise to focus on.
I feel it's far more organized and streamlined to x happens because of Y resulting in Z, while WH40K just goes in every possible direction sporadically creating overlapping confusion, which results in them having to make new chapters to de-canonize others in order to retcon plot holes they develop as they keep going. meanwhile TC is just very simple this happened these guys did this those guys did that, now everything sucks everyone's fucked and both sides are just trying to gain absolute control over the world even at the cost of mass damnation and genocide.

Still think it woulda been cooler and worked better if the setting started in World War One going centuries forward (especially since some things like the templars didn’t exist yet) but the lore they do have is really cool

Love your video! As a small constructive nitpick: If you have to deal with german sources and encounter the weird letter "ß" the transliteration "ss" - _"Stoßtruppen"_ expressed as _"Stosstruppen"_ rather than "StoBtruppen" - would be preferable because that's precisely what the increasingly obsolete pseudo-letter ß or originally "sz" is meant to express, a sharper "s" -sound.
It's similar with umlauts - they are also indicating two merged letters, _a+e=ä, u+e=ü and o+e=ö_ so just omitting the dots amounts to leaving out a full letter. Here you can simply replace the umlaut dots with a following letter "e" instead and it would be perfectly correct, even required in banking or crosswords and the like. 😅

I was referring to an instance of written language including a perculiarity of written german I would stumble over if it wasn't coincidentally my first language, that's why I explicitly framed it as a minor nitpick. I thought the hint that you could just type "ss" rather think about how the hell to transscribe "ß" could get appreciated by somebody dabbling into such things, and I certainly would because replacing a combination of letters with another random letter because it bears some superficial similarity just isn't a matter of pronounciation..

I am now tempted to build a faction, that being Kanata's own Army of St. Kateri Tekakwitha. They would be a unit of Natives alongside English and HRE settlers, who would fight not only in the holy land as tithe, but at home as well, fighting those who had chosen not to follow God (whom the Natives refer to as Gitche Manitou), but instead follow the will of the infernal trickster Hobomok, or the Devil.

You know...im curious...where are natives from the Americas at? I know they werent part of the known world at the time of the crusades, but an 800 year world spanning war...you'd think the tribes of the Americas would get caught up in it eventually. Even if not at first, people seeking a peaceful life would eventually end up on their shores, and eventually, they'd be followed by other peace seekers looking for a calmer existence, or warmongers looking for a new foothold in the war.
From what I can tell from the little lore there is, no colonisation happened but Spain has made contact with South America and is trading and sending missionaries

I can sort of picture them walking around a modern/aztec or incan central or south america setting unholy and possesed aztecs or incans ablaze with their holy chants and prayers. Converting a few but making enemies with the majority of tribes they contact. Ive also been curious about the vatican space program they start in 1899. Ima do some reading up on that next i think.
If you get a hold of some existing crusader models from any number of model peddlers, you could do a full game of this set in The Triclavian Wars, which I find rather fun. It could be this community's very own Horus Heresy.

I wish the Christian faction(s) would have more esoteric aspects to it. Hermeticism was a Catholic invention, after all.
And now that I'm thinking about it, the heretic forces should realistically be more like Chaos from 40k, with more temptation and less "you will actually just have a miserable life and guarantee a permanent residence in the least savory afterlife possible." I suppose it isn't about religious accuracy, though.
I love the different factions, but I feel like they need to distinguish themselves in art style a bit more. The hound and the fly of the black grail look almost ai generated with how fleshy and veiny they are, then the tumor lord and thrall just kinda look like basic nurgle-esque zombie things. The azebs look like ww1 but most of the Sultunate looks like it’s from a fantasy game (their armor mainly, I don’t personally mind homunculi or automatons). I feel like they’re just on the cusp of it with most of these though, and we obv need more art before making any judgements.

@@Scorpionwincheater88 Presumably they scraped some of his DNA off one of his relics. Some stories in Christian mythology talk about the nails from the crucifixion and his burial shroud.

Kinda curious on how they handle the byzantines, ethiopia, nubia, and the christian caucasus kingdoms.
I, and several other people, spoke to Toumas recently, and he revealed that Ethiopia is still around, and fighting hard to defend their ground. This means that Nubia is likely a massive war along the Nile, with skirmishes and raids in the surrounding desert.
The byzantines are definitely diminished, because the forces of hell are constantly in a full-scale invasion of that land. Vlad the impaler apparently got to slaughter a bunch of Heretics, so there is probably plenty of raiding happening on the greek coasts. (Which makes sense, because the Heretics basically own the Mediterranean.)
The Caucasus are also a warzone. The Islamic, orthodox, and heretic forces are all vying to control that area, but the majority of the fighting is between the orthodox and heretics.
Thomas told me that they have done a significant amount of work on making a map of the known conflict area, but it looks really bad when compared to the art that Mike has been drawing for years now. They want him to continue to focus on finishing all the character art for the main factions, and then make an official map, but it isn't happening any time soon.
Join the official Trench Crusade discord, and you might be able to ask Tuomas directly in the future. People also make summaries of the talks that you can read, so don't worry if you miss any.

As much as it's a good video for sumarization of the setting, I am disapointed that a lot of the unoficial pictures you used here are "AI" generated- I see it as quite a slap on the face of artists working on the Trench Crusade as a setting. And besides this- a lot of the images you used have painfully disgusting errors on them (caused by being generated rather than drawn).
Hell, you could have just used pictures from old manuscripts and photos from WW1 rather than degrading the quality by using generated images

I disagree on the degradation of quality - these images provide the proper context for the lore in visually describing the things they were used to describe, which I felt was more important than their errors. Using old school World War I images would've provided nothing in terms of assistance in describing many of the original events in the lore that take place over 800 years.
There's not a lot of art to choose from in regard to coming directly from the creators. I used essentially every image they had ever produced in this video. That doesn't degrade the quality of their artwork, and I ensured their higher quality artwork was recognizable by labelling unofficial imagery. More than many people would do.
It was a decision I had to make, and I chose AI. I disagree it's a slap to the face on anyone, and so far, you're the only individual who has expressed any offense to it. Ratio wise, it appears to be unoffensive to the general public, as if the voice of public opinion really mattered more than my intentions.
We work with the resources we have. If you dislike it, choose another video, but I resent the idea that I "slapped anyone in the face". You can take that idea somewhere else. Your criticism displays an Anti-AI Purist bias, a bias I do not hold to. There is an ethical and professional way to use this technology. By pointing out that which was not from the artists, giving the artists credit by name in my video, and providing links to all official artwork and material in the description, I believe I have adhered to a strong ethical standard and professionalism in my usage of AI assets.
If you have suggestions on stronger ethical standards, you think I should adhere to, I'd love to hear them. It is a new territory for content creators and the world as a whole, but simply inferring I've slapped people in the face or sacrificed quality for convenience is disgusting, dishonest, and does not help in the improvement of content on this channel.

There are multiple videos on the lore that are currently creating fan fiction alongside their explanations of the lore. I felt clarifying that this video is not fan fiction was a service for those who wanted to be sure the lore they were receiving was entirely official per the creators of the universe. I never said I'm better, and I never implied I'm better, than people making fan fiction. There's nothing wrong with fan fiction - but there IS something wrong with passing off fan fiction as canonical work, which some Trench Crusade videos have done. Likewise, informing people that what I'm providing is not original will let people know that I'm not the master mind of any of this lore. It allows the makers of this universe to receive the credit for their work without putting anything in their work that isn't theirs.
2. Your definition of fan fiction is personal, not culturally colloquial. It doesn't take a genius to understand that when people reference fan fiction, they are referencing a non-canonical expansion of someone else's narrative. Calling Dante's Inferno a "Christian Fan Fiction" is disingenuous to any serious conversation about that work or fan fiction as a genre.

I hate to be that guy (well, not in this case, as smugness begets smugness) but this would be classified as historical fantasy. Historical fiction from the world war 1 aspect (and the general “alternate history” aspect), and fantasy from the more religious aspects being both tangible and impactful on the world and story.
I would no sooner call the Percy Jackson novels “fan fiction” of Greek mythology, nor would I call dragon ball a fan fiction of journey to the west.
Unless, of course, your basis for determining if something is Dan fiction is based on the notoriety of the writer, in which case it’s a real “grave robbing vs. Archaeology” situation
Imagine unironically calling Italy’s (no one less of humanity’s) greatest literary work fan fiction, you’d have a country out to get you. Dante was a professional writer with ties to the church and government, youre being fatally pedantic by calling that fan fiction.
