  • Because you never know when a watercolor duel might break out LOL! I scanned my patterns for the portable painter micro, a classic 12 color tin and the Derwent palette and sketchbook patterns. If you want then you can find them here: thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.co...
The other day I purchased a cute palette that came in a green holster you can clip on y0ur belt loop or bag for travel painting: amzn.to/3zaG87H and I had several people ask if my Portable Painter Micro would fit. It didn't fit but it gave me the idea to make holsters for several other palettes and I will show you how to draft a pattern for your palette and make one for whatever watercolor palette you have. You can make them to fit just the palette or include a sketchbook and loops for pens and brushes. Customize it how you wish!
    Supplies: Affiliate links used
Sturdy fabric like Vinyl, leather or felt amzn.to/45wPPJM
Closures such as buttons, snaps or magnetic purse clousures: amzn.to/3xqaZwt
    Key ring: amzn.to/4cvvtTg
    Scissors: amzn.to/4bZU82B
Needle and thread to match the fabric you are using: amzn.to/3RAazKO
I used a sewing machine but you can hand sew this as well amzn.to/3xewvV2
Pencil and Paper for drafting pattern
    T Square: amzn.to/4cqGJAo
Chalk pencil for transferring pattern and marking snap placement: amzn.to/3RAVGbk
Elastic if you want stretchy pen holders: amzn.to/3VUu17x
You will need about an hour to make your first pouch but after that it goes much quicker.

Wonderful Work Lindsay. As a professional seamstress of 44 years I can honestly say you did as good of a job as any of us sewists out here. Pattern making takes a special vision of what you want your end result to be. Even if you started out with a product that was close to what you wanted to have, all of us designers and pattern makers do the same thing. Visualizing a finished object and breaking it into parts is a very unique ability. Bravo.

"what if" is often the beginning of genius ideas! 🤯🎉. Earlier today I sketched and cut this on a thick felt placemat I had. I hand sewed it. Now your video pops up! Your extended versions including the sketchbook are proof that the "What if..." moments can lead to so much good stuff. Well done! Thanks, Lindsay!

Very clever! You could use the little squares as decoration on the finished pieces. If the pens don't stay well or get caught on the outside maybe a sleeve on the inside where it folds to latch could hold them. It's so cute! Thanks so much!

Oh, for those little square tiles in your fabric sampler, you could tilt them on an angle, like a diamond, put several in a line, and sew them to make mobiles. Hang them in any place you want color. I have seen some cute art studios with paper “tiles” about that size sewn together for banners etc. Super cute. OH, I have made pouches out of Kraftex which is a paper fabric type material that can be embossed, sewn, inked or stamped. No fraying. I love all the pouches you have made.

I just realized I have some perfect material for this leftover from redoing some seats for a boat! Ooh thanks so much Lindsay for the inspiration! Now 🤔 do I have something I can use already for a closure fastener… I would also imagine you could stitch on a belt loop that could be threaded on the belt, for carrying it vs a key ring or even both for options!! Thanks so much for sharing, the wheels are turning now! 😁 Also WoW that is a corner “chomper” I just have little ones like paper punches, but that is quite the tool. I need to look at that a bit closer! You are not the only one, these are definitely cool!

Hullo Lindsay, Excellent video and wonderful instructions too! I was always trying to keep my sketchbooks clean they seem to collect grime from inside my backpack! I was thinking as you were constructing your felt "bag" that if you were to make a sketchbook carry-all with a pouch for a watercolor palette as you did for your 12 half pan palette. I think that would be an awesome craft project. I guess your instructions could be transferred over to another project, I do believe most people have a hard time visualizing the completed idea, This is why videos are so much more easily understood. Well maybe I can get my wife to do some sewing... Thanks for a wonderful video! Not long at all!

OMG, you did buy 3! 🤣🤣🤣 Was my first thought, but seriously I think you could sell them. I feel that the leather will provide cushioning for those tres expensive dry pans. I hate when mine get thrown around and cracked and bits get in other pans. They still wet up and all but I don't like it. And they look pretty posh. Clipping onto yourself is the best idea as you want your hands free when hiking or even kayaking. It's just safer. ❤

You might be able to lap the seam allowance on sides and super glue together. That way you won’t have “wings” sticking out. It might be easier to add snaps and loop before sewing side seams. Great pattern idea. TFS😻

What a great project! If you are worried about the dangling from the key chain, you can secure 2 flat straps in the back (one on each side) and string your belt through it... and make it like a belt bag. Less dangle and you can wear it 2 ways.

    This is a great tutorial!
I recently purchased a couple of travel cases with plein aire or longer flight art time opportunities in mind. But mine are slightly larger (and closes with a zipper so you don’t lose anything) both open flat and can are easily carried. “We” need to figure out how to make these with sturdy with (metal not plastic) zippers. They are a bit pricey, and they are extremely durable, almost military grade, pouches (which I find myself grabbing daily).
If you want an idea of my portable studio (a carry over lifestyle from my days as a college art instructor) keep reading! The larger one (6x10x2”) has two interior pockets (one side has a sketchbook, the other side holds my Schminke retro mini w/c palette and Art Toolkit (the larger size) palette (filled with Daniel Smith w/c). Each side also has several other smaller pockets (still on the inside, but sewn to the pocket not the exterior fabric) which holds a mini spray bottle, syringe (for filling various water or ink pens), a double sided Art Toolkit credit card sized palette (one side for gouache/one for watercolor), a leather pouch with 4 travel brushes, a pencil, black pen, brass nib dip pen, several paint brushes, a 1”x 1/4” case that holds a kneadable eraser, and a recycled mio bottle that carries water and fills several pens (thanks for that great idea!). The smaller one (4x6x2”) holds drawing supplies: Four sizes of mechanical pencils, and refill leads (2B, 4B) for each, 4 types and sizes of permanent black drawing pens, a set of artists woodless leads (white, sepia, black, etc), erasers (white plastic, sanded kneadable, Tombow mono zero), 6” ruler, Art Toolkit (credit card sized) mini palette, two water brushes and a travel (flat) brush.

Earrings are a great idea for your mini sample squares, or fold them to make pinqheels, stacked buttons and flowers.
Or cover your magnet base with a piece of vinyl cut in a gun shape!
P.S You can also try making fabric for a coat or poncho. Glue your mini squares to a soft mesh or gauze in some kind of swatching pattern. If the fabric backing is dark then the colors pop and the mesh disappears & you have a floating coat that would look like you're wearing your color chart.

Instead of the pencil loops, you could another pouch for your pens/pencils -- one that attaches piggyback to your sketchbook/palette pouch. Velcro'd or snaps? The pens/pencils could have one of those pouches where the whole top part unzips and folds down, leaving you with a pencil cup. Or maybe a tri-fold rollbag? Possibilities are endless.

I love these little pouches but I'm no good at sewing. It's interesting that people were asking about a pouch for the portable painter micro. I noticed when I bought it that there's a hole at one end of the deep base, so I actually tried them with a small keyring ring loop and carabiner attached to one of mine and a ring with a lanyard attached to the other. I've used a small ring because it really doesn't need anything too heavy duty, the micro is so light. I regularly use a small army belt pouch for my travel kits. I made multiple kits that hold an A6 sketchbook and then either markers, watercolors or gouache. The pouches have 2 zippered compartments and a clipped one on the front plus a molle type loop on the back to fit on a belt or attach to bag. So plenty of room for a small cloth, travel brushes, business cards etc. For a while I toyed with the idea of making a bigger A5 sketchbook cover with a built in pouch on the front for my micro and brushes or markers and my little homemade board for holding the palette. That way you could set up the board in the book like usual, with the palette attached while you work and still have a pouch underneath to hold extra brushes or pens. It was an idea but like I said, I'm hopeless at sewing so it never went any further. I frequently have lots of ideas beyond my skill level 😂

I signed up for your line and wash class from Michaels, but then I couldn't find the class on the website on the 14th. Did I have the date wrong?

It was last week I think. It is now up on the Michael's RUclips channel. 😀

enjoyed this idea so much. Could you create a pdf for the mini portable painter?

Great ideas! On another note, do you recall if the portable pallet was on sale during Amazon Prime day?

I don't know, but I'll look for it this prime day and add it to my deal list if it is. Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen it on sale.

You gave me an idea to crochet one in cotton and sew a little pouch with a wash cloth so I can use that to dab my brush off on. Then I can rinse and hang dry. So no need for a towel in my kit?

Great idea! Or since the pouch is cotton you could dab on that!

    You could use cork fabric

      @thefrugalcrafter  20 дней назад

Is that durable? I've only used that in scrapbooking.

I use cork that you make wallets and purses. So I don't think it's the same as craft cork. @@thefrugalcrafter

I'm so lazy these days I just have my travel supplies in a Dollar Tree makeup bag with a carabiner on the pull. Have one hanging on my purse for meds sometimes too lol. No ambition here lately. Ask the laziest person how to streamline the process they will tell you. 😂
