Wow, I was not expecting a passionate response to this video review. Let me clarify a few things. First, the word professional as it applies to watercolor paint, your view might be different and that is OK but I review all paints against the same standard, and what you are getting here is an unbiased review. To me, a Professional paint has ASTM lightfastness ratings, or lightfastness tests done by an independent entity. Not all professional watercolors are lightfast but they will tell us if they are so we as artists can make the best choices for our needs. For instance, if you are painting something to hang on a wall your needs are different than painting something to be reproduced. Professional paints have pigment code that corresponds with the individual colors. Kristy now has a list of pigment codes on the package but does not identify what pigments are in what colors, and some codes are not used in professional paint. Also when I consider a paint being professional it is made by the company selling it in most cases. Winsor & Newton makes their own Professional watercolors but outsources the student grade line. Davinci makes their professional watercolors and collabs with art influencers so you know what you are getting, they also make American Journey for Cheap Joes, so it is easy to trace the source and know what you are getting. When products are outsourced to factories in China there is a lot of murkiness. Kristy herself mentioned a language barrier between her and the paint factory in her Instagram stories yesterday. Even with the best intentions these factories can be putting things in the paint you are unaware of. There was also a bit of scaleyness in some colors, I have never seen that in other paints I would call professional. I have evaluated hundreds of paints. I have experience in this. When we are talking about paints made in China a few factories are making all the paint. I can't say for certain who makes her paint but I will say that they feel identical to the Arteza half pans, review here: ruclips.net/video/czEqPDzdUZg/видео.htmlsi=w_ID-1LZ7n0-21qW (note Arteza rated these as "premium" and I called them out for it too, I am consistent.) These also feel the same as the old Meeden half pans, review here: ruclips.net/video/GPpptiurh1U/видео.htmlsi=Bk5aWhGUELym9zl7 If you truly want more info about the quality of the paint check those reviews out as well. In defense of Kristy, she defines the term Professional differently than I do. We have different opinions and that's OK. Secondly, I liked her products overall, I don't know what everyone is so upset about. If you were mad, did you watch the whole review? And have you ever watched any of my previous reviews? I have been accused of being mean, hateful, and jealous in the comments. I do not believe that I am any of those things. I am brand agnostic and this was a tough review to do because I like Kristy but I owe it to my viewers to be consistent in my assessment. You may not agree with me but my goal is for you to have the facts before you buy it. I gain nothing (except hopefully the trust of my viewers) by posting something critical. RUclips is full of glowing reviews of every product imaginable. Feel free to watch those.
Lindsay, you are very consistent! I love/look forward to all your reviews and opinions on paint! I think people are being a bit much, like chill out it’s just paint! I can understand that they love Kristy and so do I. But at the end of the day it’s just paint! Much love. ❤
Wow, I did watch the whole review and I have to say, having watched a great many of your reviews, I come to you for information because you are always transparent and provide an honest opinion, I have found to be spot on when I also try the item being reviewed. These paints are no exception. You provided your honest opinion based on a vast knowledge and use of other watercolor brands and I am not sure why (other than creator loyalty) anyone could be pushing back. Your review was kind and considerate to the fact this was a fellow RUclipsr's product. Sometimes I think people forget it is ok to disagree or have different opinions. Thank you for holding true to your honest reviews. I have never felt, even when you have said a company sent something to you that the review I was seeing had been biased by that. This is something I admire and why I trust your product reviews. I agree with how you see paints qualifying as "professional" grade and also agree it is OK if Kristy sees it differently. Overall I thought you did give a positive review with a caveat about the paints, but never did you say they were awful or that someone shouldn't use them. They have a place and a market and getting them to support the creator who worked so hard producing the palette is a great thing and if you go into the purchase knowing these are not competing with your Legacy professional brands, not only will you not be disappointed, you might just have fun and find joy using them. That is what I took away from your review. I do have these paints, I have tried them, and I think you were fair and honest. Thanks for giving us your honest unbiased opinion, even if it wasn't what some people wanted to hear.
A product review is a thorough presentation on the pros and cons of the product. If Lindsay only discussed the pros, that would be a product promotion, not a product review.
I believe Kristi was upset not by Lindsay's review but by the comments that were left by many of you. It's so easy for us to hide behind our RUclips names and say things here we would never say to someone in person. Kindness and good manners are in short supply. I am practicing being better, it feels good. Try it ❤
I am shocked by the backlash you are getting from this. I follow you both, and tbh, your review was exactly what I thought it would be. It was fair, it was kind, and it was honest. You weren’t rude, you just didn’t like all of the products. I look to your channel for reviews before I buy any new product, and I am grateful that you didn’t sacrifice your honesty just because this was another RUclipsr. You’re one of the good ones, don’t let this get you down!
I feel exactly the same way! Also, I don’t think anyone who is familiar with legacy brand professional paint walks into a purchase of Kristy’s paint thinking that they are to the same standard. Lindsay, your review was~ exactly~ what I thought it would be. Fair, honest, and true to literally every other review that I’ve watched from you. It’s silly all the hate. I watch Kristy heavily, and she is the first to say that she’s not into all the pigment science, paint chemistry, or any of the technical knowledge. She’s into sparking joy, and she’s so good at it. So is Lindsay!
I heard of this review from Kristy’s video and she was fully kind in her acceptance of the review. So I thought I’d hop on over and check it out since I have not heard of you before. You were kind, respectful, and I felt you hit the points I found to be true in my use of these joyful paints. I prefer daniel smith and Holbein tbh. But for a fun painting to stretch and enjoy, these are great. 😊 people who are mean and defensive tend to be that way in their life and they look for ways to vent. I’m sorry you experienced that. Your review is direct and your thoughts. You did her positive-“her tins are so cute” I agree. ❤
I just wanted to say I am sorry for the nasty comments both you & Kristy have received. You are BOTH incredible women who seem very kind hearted & truly are a TREASURE to the art world.❤️ There was nothing offensive or mean spirited in your review you disagree on what is professional & that is fine. You were true to what you believe Kristy is true to what she believes. The comment section in some cases took it too far but that isn't on you or Kristy. Again sending love to Kristy & you...the art world wouldn't be as joyful without both of your voices.❤️❤️❤️
All this drama and emotion over what is pretty much a standard and not all that harsh art supply review is absurd to the point of being embarassing. Someone judging the quality of a product has nothing whatsoever to do with what a wonderful person fans think the business person behind said product is, niche philosophies on the word "professional" and personal feelings being hurt. It all comes off very unprofessional. The general public (not just limited to fans) buys products with certain expectations, especially in comparison to other similarly-priced brands using that same designation. Free-spirited assertions on words and personal associations with products have no place in standardized reviews that are supposed to be as objective as possible and cater to the general public, not doting fans. Tbh I watch and like both channels but all this impassioned protest hidden behind what frankly seems like toxic positivity as a defense against critique is vaguely off-putting. Reading the comment section on KR's live and attempting to listen to the live myself felt like wandering through a twilight zone disguised in sparkles. Folks would do well separating business from emotion and product from personality, because this whole episode was the most needless and overdramatized hullabaloo ever.
I was going to reply, but you pretty much covered every point I was going to make @angelskull4224. I will add I am subscribed to both channels, and watched both reviews twice. I think it was a tempest in a teacup. I have a ton of supplies bought after watching @thefrugalcrafter reviews and have never been disappointed. It was a fair review, and should be accepted as such, and not defended for 1.5 hrs. (I have the brushes, and they are good brushes as Lindsay said.) I wonder now what Lindsay will review next. 😁👍🏻
Thank you for your thorough and honest review Lindsay. For what it's worth, I think you were kind & honest. I can imagine this was a tough review to create and it was well done. Clear enough to deter anyone who wouldn't enjoy the supplies; and also give a fully informed green light to those who would. xx
You are so welcome! In hindsight, I think I should have declined the offer to review the products. The parasocail relationships here are weird, and I did not anticipate the drama of anything but a 100% glowing review. I took into account that this was a small company without the resources of a large brand and tempered my review accodingly. I don't regret my assessment, and my opinion has not changed on the paint even after seeing Kristys' response. I was honest, I was kind, it's all I can do.
I was going to say that those paints seem like a great gift-but I wouldn’t want to give my money to someone who professes joy and kindness, but can’t handle an honest review, even if it’s for someone else. I was so confused by the comments, did some scrolling, and was appalled to find Kristy in your comments section, not making her own remarks, but responding to replies to someone else’s comment. That just feels slimy to me. I think you, Lindsay, have handled this with grace, but I find Kristy’s behavior shady and uncalled for. If she wanted a promotion, she should’ve paid for one; if she wanted a positive review, she should’ve tweaked her claims about her paints (there’s nothing wrong with having student-grade paints, especially when her whole brand is about having fun and not being afraid to make art). She picked a fight, and while it’s been good of you not to take the bait, I think she’s ultimately alienated a lot of potential customers. I’ve personally been interested in those brushes for a year at least, but I will not be purchasing anything from her brand for the foreseeable future.
She's too concerned in her videos with repeating "What do you think? Tell me in the comments" over and over in her videos. I had to unsubscribe, it was obnoxious. It just felt very fake and "I'm doing this for views, not to actually help anyone out."
... and therein is the trouble. A negative commentor unitentionally appropriates the name and reputation of the creator they seek to defend. How many considered the brushes or tin only to be disillusioned about a creator whose fans tore into *our* favorite creator?
@@veryberry39it's because she values people's opinions, and actually people help each other out in her comment sections, too. She never picked a fight, she said Lindsay was honest and she accepted everything that was said, no problems at all. She asked permission to answer those questions or comments that are claiming false accusations against her. She likes honesty and loves that people find joy in painting. If you don't like joy, I will pray for you. Creating should always be joyful, otherwise it's just work. I'm so glad Kristy is here, because she sparked my artistic self back into being, and has for many people. I'm sorry you see her as such a bad person. The problem she, I, and others have are with the haters, who would cancel her, called her a liar, and slander her business because they had a loose ferrul on a brush, or sone other nonsense. Nothing about the actual review was an issue.🙏
Just finished watching this for a 3rd time, and still see nothing but a kind, fair and honest review. I am SO thankful for Lindsay's art supply assessments. It's clear she worked very hard to not offend Kristy in these 37 minutes.
Hi Lindsey, thank you so much for your honest review. It's greatly appreciated. Yesterday when I watched Kristy's live, one thing that stood out to me was Kristy stated that she is her product. She also said that when someone speaks ill of her product, it's speaking ill of her. Kristy also mentioned that she is against words like professional and its meaning in the art community. Therefore when ppl called her paints "unprofessional" I think she and her viewers interpreted it as ppl calling her an unprofessional artist. Idk if a lot of her viewers understand that the term "professional" is used in the art community to distinguish artist grade products from craft/ children art supplies. Many artists/crafters like myself get extremely frustrated when a new unknown product is marketed as professional and doesn't contain certain attributes that hold up to other professional paint. Like not having pigment info, LF rating, ASTM info, etc Unfortunately today many companies especially on Amazon, all use the same words to describe their art supplies. From kid's craft paints to artists grade paints they all use words like: professional, high-quality, lightfast, washable, watersoluble, highly pigmented. With that being said shopping for new art supplies can be very confusing for artists, hobbyists and crafters therefore they look towards RUclipsrs for product reviews. I don't think it is wrong to say that the paints are not professional (artists quality). I also don't see anything wrong with professional artists using unprofessional (student grade) supplies in their work. I do think that is important to be honest when selling products so is not misleading to the consumer. I think a lot of people got frustrated with Kristy because they felt like she was not being honest when marketing her product. It's not my place to say whether she was or not being honest however being an art supply consumer, I do understand the frustration of the viewers. I disagree with Kristy when she said that her product is an extension of her brand. People buy her product because of her brand as a RUclips artist. I hope this video opens more of a discussion about how to market and describe art supplies on the market. I wish Kristy the best with her products. I absolutely love her palette design and am looking forward to getting one when they're back in stock.
When it comes to finding reviews on products, you are definitely my go to because I know you will always take your time using the products, comparing them, working with them etc. And your expertise in how paints are made etc., is excellent. So, I thoroughly enjoyed this review. I thought it was extremely honest and very well thought out. I don't think anyone on the planet enjoys their work being critiqued if it's not a glowing and overly exaggerated puff piece. But you were completely fair and complementary. You'd think getting an honest review from an actual artist would be a good thing. Great review Lindsay. Lee x
I watched the entire review & have been subbed to Lindsay for at least a decade. She was thorough & polite, even overly kind. She feels an obligation to look out for us when she reviews things because she knows we rely on her (frugal is in the channel name for heaven's sake) opinion. It seems that the fans of Kristy Rice have some overlap with mental health & do not mean that in a bad way. It seems she has deeply connected to a tender viewer base & Lindsay's review was mistake as some kind of personal attack by an overly defensive fan base. Lindsay was doing right by her viewers. A lot of us are on tight budgets. I can't believe she even has to defend the definition of professional grade paint. That's just silly. If you hired a professional studio band to record music & instead got 3rd year students you would be rightfully perturbed. If all she could could manage was student grade that's fine as long as you're being transparent about it. Trying to gaslight the entire art community because the maker is "such a nice person" is absurd. If she was so nice she would squash the beef & keep her fans from coming after Lindsay for just doing her job & being honest. Geesh. I'm sorry Lindsay. You must feel like you're taking crazy pills. It's not you. It's them. This is whole thing is so unnecessary. Maybe a scientist can write a paper on when para-social relationships go wrong 😅 I hope your doing well & this hasn't impacted your mental health too much. A lot of the bad comments were trying to excuse their behavior by saying how much they felt connected to Kristy. Well I feel connected to you as well Lindsay. You never made me feel like I had to be anything but willing to try. You are unpretentious & unafraid to show us when it goes wrong. It made me feel like not giving up on art entirely even though my disability is rapidly taking my hands away. I still try. It won't ever be like it was. But it still feels good to try. Thank you for that. You've been my companion on many lonely endeavors in my art journal & I'm grateful you put yourself out there. Hugs ❤❤❤
Oh good grief! I originally skipped over this video because I'm not a painter. But after watching Sat Chat, my curiosity got to me and I watched this video and read many of the comments. You were not mean, hateful or jealous (jealous? seriously?) at all. One reviewer said you should have praised the good stuff and ignored what you didn't like. Oh, sure ~ praise the brushes (which you did) but ignore the so-called "professional" paint like it wasn't even there? Your review was fair, unbiased and gave your honest OPINION of the products. People can agree or disagree with your OPINIONS without resorting to name calling and bad behavior.
Crazy! I watched Kristy's live feed - then came to your channel to see what in the world caused such an outrage. I honestly don't get it - you did a wonderful review - and as always left it up to me to decide whether I would like the product. I love that you do comparisons with watercolors from your collection. So, thank you! And bless your heart!
I did the same saw Kristy's video and came to find out what all the hub bub was about. I have her brushes and use them I also have Lindsey's brushes . Before I buy supplies I look to see if Lindsey has a review she as honest reviews and gives reasons for her reviews. She has never steered me wrong. I will continue to watch and learn from both of them....
Your reviews are the best in the biz, Lindsay. I don't think I've purchased a brush, paint or paper in the past seven years without first checking your channel, hoping for a review first. You always highlight the strengths, gently critique the weaknesses, and remain respectful from start to end. Thanks for all of your hard work. I don't know how you do it.
Same! I always check to see if Lindsay has done a review of a product I’m not sure abt or am new too. I’ve watch the @thefrugalcrafter since the beginning. Thank you Lindsay.
Very fair and honest review Just my view point: I’m specifically referencing the claim of “professional paints” & would like to state that there is global standard practices which are adhered to when paint manufacturers make marketing claims and labels of their products as professional quality artists grade paints. This is what consumers rely on when purchasing products which claim to be professional grade paints. As a business owner it is important to acknowledge how this will impact consumer behavior. I understand that there are various differential marketing techniques used in business however being transparent with your customers on how this represents your product is a good building block to ensure consumer confidence and brand credibility
Wow! You apparently kicked a wasp nest here. I watch and enjoy Krisy's videos and i have one of her earlier books. She is fun and often inspiring. Your (Lindsay's) review on the products is, in my opinion, excellent. Exactly what I expect from you as a reviewer. And exactly what i enjoy about watching (and participating in) your youtube channel. I trust your opinion. I haven't seen , nor will i look for any rebuttal from Kristy. I did a quick look at some of these comments and many seem rude and overblown. Lindsay, my opinion is you did a fair review. Best regards.
I always appreciate your thoroughness, Lindsay! I think your review is an honest and fair opinion. When I buy "professional" watercolor paints, I expect the quality and performance of what most call legacy brands. I own several brands of handmade paints, too, and although they are labeled as "professional or artist grade," they just don't perform like professional watercolors. While I haven't tried Kristy's products, I would gladly buy her empty tins, but the colors of her paints just aren't for me. You produced a fair review, so don't let the few rude comments make you second guess your integrity!
Did not know there was a kerfuffle until last night. I don't understand why. You were honest and respectful in your comments. While also showing honest enjoyment in in many of her products. You'll always be my go to for product reviews. You've never steered me wrong.
Lindsay gave a very honest review and qualified her assessment with a side by side comparison of similar paints. She gave some grace and recognition on an individual artist putting out their own products without the backing of a major brand. She was very kind but was truthful in her description of the products. Props to Lindsay for standing by her review amongst the supporters that didn’t want to see her honest opinions. Kristy’s palettes are beautiful and I am looking forward to shopping for one on Amazon and putting my own favorite watercolors in them.
FYI I'm so used to your videos and style of painting that when you do a review I can get a very accurate idea of whether a product is for me or not. Thanks for staying honest, I tried to put myself in your shoes and I can see it would have been a difficult one to do.
I think this was a very fair and honest review. I know that I can always come to your channel when I’m looking to try a new watercolor brand I haven’t tried before and trust your review on that particular product. Thank you for all you do. As a professional artist, I want a professional paint. I love that I can always trust your opinion. Keep on doing what you do ❤
Hi Lindsey, Well, I've been watching your channel for years and I've never seen such a hub-bub over one of your reviews! Your reviews are the best- they are fair and honest and kind and filled with so much knowledge. I learn from them even if I don't intend to buy the product. I think you're a natural born teacher. Thank you for doing what you do :) Chin up!
I have never been disappointed with anything you’ve given a positive review of, therefore I always look to your reviews as honest ones with no agenda. Thanks for that effort.
I appreciate how you dive into the product reviews. You share so much information with your viewers. Thank you for helping people better understand products. 🎨🖌️
I have to agree with your review and the reason I watch you Lindsay is because I get an honest review of products. I think Kristy Rice is amazing and an uplifting person this review takes nothing away from her passion and talent. Love and light to you Lindsay.
College prof here: given the limited funds amateurs or beginners have for painting, ask yourself if it will be more fun looking at a cute tin or painting with luscious, better quality paint. Did you know WN Cotmans are lightfast and made with professional pigments that are not expensive? Rosa Gallery paints cost less than the KR set, and they are actually lightfast, lusciously pigmented, pro grade WC’s. Paul Rubens comes in an adorable pink tin, and Meilang student paint gives you 24 pans for $16-20, in a cute turquoise tin. I’ve seen Lindsay’s past reviews of Arteza and Meeden pan WC’s, and she has repeatedly pointed out the many frustrations of working with them, clearly recommending that her viewers avoid them. Lindsay shows that these KR paints are equivalent in quality to Arteza and Meeden, but critiques the KR paints more gently, because she is being kind hearted about it. I think she’s bending over backwards to avoid being hurtful, when the product is questionably priced and advertised. I’ve just seen the pigment list of the KR paints and they are cheap, non-lightfast pigments common in student or lower quality paint sets. Labeling obviously student grade paints as “professional,” or saying a watercolor book has “watercolor paper” in it when it doesn’t, and then charging trusting viewers a lot of money for cute packaging, is questionable. A lot of us are tired of inflated or misleading product descriptions. If you feel you want to support KR, go ahead and joyfully do so, but only now are you more correctly informed. I think Lindsay does a very good job of walking this tight rope of a review, balancing the pluses and minuses. Please do not label her as jealous or unfair.
Exactly. Labeling these paints professional or professional grade is incredibly misleading, and abusing the term. Someone curating their own set of colors with Daniel Smith, for example, that is professional. To me, professional means that you can sell high quality artwork with these paints and they would last beyond a couple of months when displayed. (I personally will not buy artwork that will fade or isn't light fast. I don't have that kind of disposable income.) Which would include light-fast ratings and pigment information, pigment characteristics etc. Seems odd that there's so much controversy over this when it is pretty clear. I think perhaps the term "professional grade" isn't as protected as it should be. Seems some overly sensitive or unhinged, super fans take things too personally, making inappropriate comments. I hope this will not deter Lindsay to continue to make honest reviews. Because they are few and far between these days, and I trust her evaluation and her in depth knowledge (I find the science and story behind pigments, paints, colors fascinating! And it seems like Lindsay is one of the few that understands the components of paints and pigments, etc. and teaches that in her videos! Read: The Secret Lives of Color by Kassia St Clair)
Thanks so much. I am kinda afraid to keep reading the comments, but I appreciate your support:) I told the truth according to my experience and knowlage, I tried to be kind, I have no ax to grind. I just want people to know what they are buying.
@@thefrugalcrafter I come from a bilingual family, whose native language is not English. However, I was born and went to school in the United States. I am a first-hand eye witness to language barriers ... I truly think there's was a language barrier here. I don't think the Asian language defines professional, the same as we do. For example, Shinhan has a product line that they call professional ...yet their PWC line is what we Americans would deem professional. It's very unfortunate for Kristy, because she could have been led down the wrong path by the developer/manufacturer... they after all were selling HER on an idea, THEY were in for a profit as well. And as she admits, she's not a pigment geek, she may not have cared at the time.
Why I’m so curious about the review is not that I am a fan and offended. It just really didn’t make sense to me personally. I use the pink Paul Ruben’s as my travel kit. I play with Cotman and prima and daeler rowney and a few other student grade brands. Kristys paints feel way nicer to me. They are creamy like many of my professional sets and they look good. so I was surprised to see the review go the way it did. I actually watch Lindsay far more. I rarely watch Kristy. Love her but prefer Lindsay’s style. But even I am getting rude comments just because I am asking questions. Trying to make sense of it. I want to learn but the answers are mostly just defensive. I don’t question the honesty of the review. I just don’t get the hate calling Kristy deceitful either. From other commenters. Sad.
Yes I have the cute Meilang paints and a small Cotman set. They are definitely good enough for me. But some people enjoy supporting an individual they like, and there's nothing wrong with that.
Lindsay once again you have demonstrated why I continue to watch your content. I've been following your channel since the early days of your channel. In all that time you've never failed to be objective and to demonstrate integrity, both of which I highly value. Keep in mind that the complainers have likely just watched this single review and are not familiar with your extensive work and extensive experience working with and reviewing different media. For your regular viewers this is just another objective review. For me personally the thing I care about the most is opacity. I'm not a professional painter and don't care about light fastness. I do really care about chalkiness and opacity. For me personally they interfere with my enjoyment of watercolors. You clearly demonstrated the opacity of this product. The fact that all your water color reviews are consistent in how they address opacity, light fastness and pigment of the product you are reviewing let's me know that I can trust your objectivity. This is just a blip in the big scheme of things. I'm especially happy that the pressure of reviewing a popular fellow RUclipsr did not change your objectivity one iota.
I always know I can trust you for honest and pragmatic reviews. I’ve seen others review these and wasn’t all that convinced so I just knew I had to wait for your review because you wouldn’t steer us wrong just to keep someone happy. I’m sorry that not everyone can appreciate all the work you do for us as a PRODUCT reviewer. Although I love the tins, I’ll be skipping out on these since I can’t excuse the price for the quantity or quality.
I really appreciate your review and I’m glad it’s out here. Honestly, after your review, I’d have still purchased some of this stuff, but agreed. If I’m buying a premade palette that’s not from say like Schminke, W&N etc. etc., I wouldn’t be buying it to sell art with. Sketchbook and fun only stuff. But even high quality brands distinguish their paints from professional to student grade - and this would be in my mind the “student”, especially if it’s similar to Arteza. I appreciate that you mention that and were very thorough and thoughtful of her products in your review. Her response is what made me decide not to purchase. It came off extremely defensive and I’m so sorry you’re receiving all this backlash over a fair, honest, and well made review of a product. Especially one that was sent to you by the creator of said product. I hope this blows over for you soon.
You did a fantastic job with this review, Lindsay!! You were 100% honest, while still being kind! I have not had the guts to review these paints, but completely agreed with your findings. I thought I was the only one who did not like them, lol! I had already donated my Arteza watercolors, so I could not compare to them...but from memory they seemed the same to me as well. They also seem to be the same formulation as Grabie watercolors, as well many others selling for $10. The tin is beautiful, I'm so glad she is selling the tins without the paints now. Her packaging is so pretty. I hope she will use this review to update the Amazon listing, as just for fun paints. I know this review had to be a bit hard for you, big hugs! 💗 Stephanie Davis
Thank you, it was but Kristy is a pro and thanked me for an honest review. She stands by the professional claim as is her right. I'll keep an eye out for your review if you decide to do one:)
That’s interesting! I actually saw a major difference in the Arteza watercolors I got from Amazon and this palette by Kristy that I ordered from her site. 🤷♀️ But I’m not a “professional” nor someone who reviews products, just someone who can add perspective from a “back to the basics” standpoint.
@R4CHEL__ well Arteza is famous for switching factories and formulas (do you remember pencil-gate a couple years ago?) So my older formula may be different to what is sold today. It's like musical chairs with some of the big budget brands on Amazon and the factories they use! That's why I have to caveat my budget supply reviews with "this is the date and price, read most recent reviews if you are buying this year's from now" it's crazy! It could be that factory raised their price and Arteza jumped ship for something cheaper. I have no idea. Edited to say it was arteza pans from 2018ish.
@@thefrugalcrafter I hadn’t been painting in 2018 because I just recently picked it back up after nearly 2 decades of not having the confidence in my art so I’m not sure about it. I believe I got the Arteza pans I had ordered from Amazon around 2022 which was not horrible for someone restarting art, but definitely was a big quality difference from paints I use now. I enjoy trying a lot of different brands when I can afford to but I predominantly use Winsor & Newton tubes these days, along with Kristy’s palette that I add in the mix alongside them 😊 I have really fallen in love with the tube watercolors though, I must say.
This is why I love your channel! 💖 Thank you so much for your INTEGRITY. 💖 I for one, am very glad to hear someone with knowledge and experience stating the facts ~ that there are paint issues, that there is no pigment info, that these are not professional grade, that the coloring books are not watercolor paper as claimed. All this stuff matters! It is a fair critique and I hope the artist will think about correcting these false claims. Also, $36 for the collapsible water holder seems a bit over the top! But I am certain she will sell more of her tins because of your kind praise of her designs! And they are beautiful! Anyway, thank you so much for being candid, clear, thorough and honest! 💖 That’s what makes you a PROFESSIONAL reviewer to be trusted! 💖
Lindsay I just want to say thank you for always presenting thoughtful and honest reviews of products. When I look at a product and have questions, your channel is the first place I come to see if you have reviewed and compared it. I trust your input and analysis of the products you review. In a world of fluff and illusion around product quality (everyone says their product is great!) I value having a trusted source to turn to for a real review. I appreciate you! 😊❤
I watched the review yesterday before the live today from her. I thought you did a fair review and ended up on a good note saying to buy her pretty supplies because they are fun, exactly as her brand says. Clearly they are not professional since they don’t have pigments and other important information must of us care about when it comes to professional watercolor. I even added the cute bucket and paintbrushes to my Amazon cart because of you. What I didn’t expect was the live she did today. I understand her wanting to align her brand for fun and joy, and that she has a different meaning for professional than what we usually think about. That’s fair and I understand but for some of us it’s kind of an important part to trust the paints. Still, I liked the message behind her channel and some of the cute supplies. Yet the live left me with more questions and a bad taste in my mouth. I know she kept saying it wasn’t about you but comments on the video. I was ready to buy because of your review but the live and her words made me question any future buys from her brand. Either way, great review aside from the weird drama it caused for some unknown reason 😅
Lindsey had one of the older water colour pallets, and the box now has the pigment information and for quite some time you have been able to access the pigment information on her website.
I looked for it on the website because Kristy mentioned having it and could not find it. I should have emailed her about it. That's on me. @@jessbutterfly1934
The live left me feeling pretty uncomfortable. Despite saying she had no problems with the review, little digs kept popping up. Things like that people should only use Arches paper to review her paints as "I *know* you have Arches" yet not using Arches herself to do her swatches and including what looks like cardstock in with the palette for swatching. The insistence that reviewers should contact her before publishing reviews if there was something they didn't like. That's something you can request if you are paying someone to do a review, it's not normal to demand that of people you don't have a contract with. The "dye boosted" claim on the packaging was a problem because she says it's not true. Ok, well the paints do look like they have dyes in them but if I take her on her word, that means she signed off on the packaging without checking it properly. Either that or there's been a miscommunication and the paint company did use dyes but Kristy thought they hadn't. It all seems very jumbled and doesn't leave me with any confidence that Kristy actually knows for sure what the ingredients in her paints are. They're lovely colours and I'm sure are fun to paint with but you can't really argue about what is in your paints when everything is so unclear and your own packaging disagrees with you. I had wanted to buy the palette originally but postage was too high to the UK but now I'm glad I didn't and it wasn't this review that makes me glad I didn't, it was Kristy's live.
@@minkg8178I’m truly sorry if you thought my live was full of any digs towards anyone. Admittedly I have an edgy sense of humor and affect when I’m live and it knowingly rubs some folks the wrong way. While live earlier this week I felt very at ease about half way in because I was primarily with my community and so I relaxed as the session evolved. It’s also important for me to say this: I mentioned several times in the live after being pushed to what felt like signing my name in blood 😂, that noo, I suppose🤷🏻♀️I ultimately don’t know exactly what my manufacturer puts in my paints despite all of the 3rd party testing they’ve done and provided me proof of over the last 2 + years. My paints are made in another country where regulations and standards are different than ours in the US. I have developed a solid working relationship with my manufacturer that hasn’t been without bumps but I trust them in good faith. I compared all this jovially to “well we don’t know what’s in our food in the US so…!”. I’ve been continually pressed and pressed for strict, perfect, guaranteed ingredient lists for the last two years by a very small but very loud minority and it honestly is exhausting. Don’t buy the paints, don’t like me, buy the paints, use them and return them because YES you can do that!! I take the hit so folks don’t get stuck with the product! So yes in my live I made some jokes that some might consider off putting because I have done all I can to make people comfortable with what I’ve created but when it’s not enough, I throw my hands up and decide to be silly here and there to cope :) And to the Arches comment… I did call to everyone’s attention that I was using Academy which my audience knows I historically compare favorably to Arches.
Kristy is such a genuine, kind human. She made me fearless when I first started painting around 2021? Watching her videos and commenting back and forth really helped me get started and not be scared. I have her palette, brush sets, travel brush, a few books, ceramic painters pot and brush holders. I love everything! You really get some fun mixes when using her palette. I can’t wait to purchase some empty watercolor palettes next. If I had to pick 3 top favorites it would be brushes, ceramic paint pot (total game changer) and her palette. Love using her palette when painting along while watching her tutorials. She stands behind her products so anytime anyone has an issue and emailed her she replaces the item.
I appreciate your integrity to ensure the review is thorough and detailed, as well as fair. You are always my go-to when I look into new products. These are a hard pass for me: too garish (too much dye?), no pigment info, no open stock, chalky texture. Pricy. No way this is professional paint. Schmincke Akademie, with colourful sturdy tins cost around 36€, Van Gogh (15 half pans for €15) Both these are amazing quality, and address the problems mentioned above. You did a great impartial job evaluating these paints. Thank you, Lindsay!
Kristy has provided all the pigment information on her new packets and it is also available on her website. You can also get restocks of certain colours by emailing her online. And if you’ve never personally try to paint then how would you know that they garnished or that they’re chalky I have them and they are definitely not choky. They’re easy to re-wet and I’m nice and smooth And quite beautiful not to mention they come in a specialised tent with Rosegold holding the half pants in place you have to take all that in when you’re factoring in price. The other brands are huge brands that have a lot of money behind them and can stand to sell at a loss if they wanted tothey also come with plain ordinary colours and plain watercolour tins with no artist, curating the palate specifically and creating colours of their own.
Thank you for the incredibly honest and fair review! Your integrity shines through, and I admire that. Keep up the fantastic work, and don't let any negativity affect your genuine reviews!
While I do enjoy using Kristy’s products, I do feel your review was fair and balanced. Having tried almost every watercolor, I understand your review of the paint. Yet, it does spark joy when I paint with it.
Agree, the brush set is quite nice. I’ve been using the paint pot for ~4 months and so far it’s held up fine. It’s great for travel, collapses flat and it’s not rigid or breakable. It does stain but that doesn’t bother me. I’ve been on the fence about the paints so your review is much appreciated!
I got her brushes when they first came out and no issue at all with them,, they work great. I also got a set of her watercolor postcards, that I folded and made into mini folios with ribbon for the bindings as gifts. They were a big hit. I paid the extra as you said to support an artist. No regrets at all.
Grateful for your thorough, honest reviews & have really enjoyed your last couple podcasts about using what we have & creating more/consuming less. Easy to get caught up in the marketing of stuff and lose sight of why we’re doing what we’re doing.
I only want you to always be transparent and consistent- and you did both with grace, and kindness as a bonus. This with your massive experience is what gives you integrity which is INVALUABLE. I don’t understand what the fuss is. I thought the quality range aligned with the target audience of Kristy’s and trying to make this accessible for everyone to experience the joy of watercolours. I think she accomplished that. What’s even more ironic to me is that you aren’t a paint snob 😂 They should’ve actually watched your videos.
A very fair and enjoyable review. I completely agree with supporting your favourite RUclips artists. I’m pleased to see that the empty tin is also available. A great way to use your own paints, yet still support and advertise Kristy. Thanks Lindsay! 👩🏻🎨🖌️🎨
You confirm my impressions, that the tins and brushes would be my enthusiastic choices. For a beginner who wants to paint along with Kristy, the colors she chose are exciting, much more interesting than the usual student quality fieldbox of 12. Plus she has so many videos using them that it's worthwhile to many her audience. But without pigment codes and lightfast information, "Professional" is just an untruth, and you couldn't ignore that, never mind the mediocre quality. Your audience of review-watchers like me already have those expectations. Lindsay, it's evident in this video as always that you focus on giving fair reviews, and this one is very factual. I love Paintcrush too and Kristy's art and style, and think there is no cause for hard feelings.
I like your honest reviews, I also like your tutorials, you've tought me a lot over the years! I also like watching Kristy's channel. Everyone has a different style and that is good.
Ah, the blessing and the curse of the internet! Many who disagree with any other opinion feel that the other person is flat out wrong. Lindsay, your integrity is greatly appreciated by many. The neutral approach one must take to reviewing any product is for the benefit of all. Personally, I don't buy artist branded products, as I usually can find better quality elsewhere. One could think, "Would I buy this if I did not recognize the name"? This applies to cosmetics, clothing, etc. So many YT creators have great personalities and are enthusiastic. I enjoy Kristy and many others. What appeals to one may not be of interest to another.
Please Note: REVIEWS ARE FOR CONSUMERS. My personal experience with a product or my opinion of that product and it's quality have nothing to do with the creator's feelings. A few months back, I commented on a few videos concerning this palette. On one of kristy's videos where she talks about her palette, I commented that these paints were white labeled and were NOT professional grade like the description indicates (cheap paint, no pigment info and no lightfast ratings). I also replied to other comments who were asking questions about the quality of the paint. I was very polite and talked about the white labeling process while giving my opinion. I went back 2 weeks later and my comments and replies were deleted. I was irked, so I check the comments I left on other videos reviewing Kristy's palette and many of them had also deleted my comments. It just felt like any opinion that was not in favor of this product got the comment scrubbed. When I look to reviews for whether or not I want to buy a product, I expect those reviews to be honest and untouched. Why even have reviews if you're going to edit/delete a portion up front. For me, that is lying and makes me weary of creators and companies who practice this. I'm sure Kristy is a lovely person but I did not appreciate being sensored when I said nothing out of pocket, inappropriate, or rude.
I think it's had for many reviewers to be unbiased. Maybe they are afraid if upsetting a RUclipsr that is larger than Tham and worry that there will be backlash from the bigger channels fans or they got the product for free and feel bad giving a poor review and there is the insidious reason that some creators would rather earn affiliate commission than be honest. Kristy sent me these products with the full understanding that I would be honest, and she was very gracious about the review. I have upset a couple of her fans (their may be more to come) but I feel I was respectful and honest. I will answer any questions I can and leave comments up as long as they are not hateful. I hope this review helped you decide if the paint is for you or not:)
@@thefrugalcrafterI wouldn’t call myself a fan of hers. I like you both very much but I watch you much more I much prefer your artistry. But I think it was an unfair review. Like comparing to prima? These are much higher quality than prima which are indeed quite gritty. Imo. And saying they don’t move and then as you painted I see the gorgeous creamy movement that I experience as well when I use these paints. I didn’t understand that Im hardcore Davinci that my fave. Then maybe sennelier and m graham and Holbein and a gallo, ds, wn etc. rs Hers are not in my top ten faves. But they are much nicer than prima! I haven’t used the student grades you compared them to but I would love it if you would compare to artist grade. Professional grade. So I could see how far off base I am. And she is. For calling them prof Maybe I’m wrong. But I don’t see much of a difference with all my prof watercolors. They behave similar. And I can get dirty water from one dip of prof Phthalo in my water jar. I will say I think hers perform better than my Paul Ruben’s set which I consider my lowest quality after prima and daeler Rowney. And better than wn student grade. Much better. You’re the expert I admit with oodles more experience than I have. But weren’t you a little hard on her products?
That's concerning. I have stopped watching RUclipsrs who scrub comments they feel are not favorable to them. That to me is a lack of integrity. RUclips does automatically delete any comments that include links, but if that was not the case it would definitely give me pause that your comments were deleted.
@@tara-leeI welcome criticism and thought Lindsay’s review was balanced, kind and fair. But an increasing number of commenters on the review are suggesting I’m lying to or misleading my audience. This narrative cannot go unchecked, in my opinion, as a brand owner.
I absolutely adore Kristy. She is such a welcoming and free spirit and supports everyone to have their own style. I have been following Kristy for 2 years now, and she is absolutely a joy to spend time painting and listening to. We even have a chant in our household, "It's Joy time!" when we play Kristy's videos. I have her products and, as a Canadian, even saved up a little for it (which I do not mind at all), and It was so worth it. Her brushes are amazing, and she is my favorite travel pack and at-home pack. When I first started watercolor painting, she was the one who gave me the courage to try and dive into it. Thank you, Kristy! More important that paint and brushes is the empowerment she gives her watchers.
Thank you for your honest unbiased assesment. I also look to your channel for reviews....and if there was ever a doubt (?) that you were not REAL with with your reviews, this review should put that to rest. I can' t thank you enough. I enjoy both your channels. Keep being Lindsay!
Oh Lindsay! I could tell this was a tough review for you! Very difficult to review another you tuber with a large following. Thank you you for your considered review and tact. I left reading the comments until now and all I can say is it makes for interesting reading. Thanks again ❤
Yeah some people take these things personally and i liked your review. I saw the traffic and comments on Kristy's channel first and didn't understand all the comments and message from Kristy on the community tab as if she got a horrible review. I like Kristy and you were the first art RUclipsr I watched when I got back into painting and you both have your own view on painting and art. I love how well rounded and proficient your art skills are with different media. I think your review was good, it was thorough and it was very fair as it gave a review for the people that may or may not like it and why. There has to be the freedom to be honest about products being reviewed and there are not enough honest product reviewers out there. I always watch your product reviews and I usually agree with you, but not always and that's fine. People do have very unhealthy parasocial relationships and people need to remember that their favourite RUclipsrs, Tiktokers and instagrammers can have differences in opinion and that is normal. Your review was kind, it was thorough and it comes from a vast wealth of knowledge and experience with paint medias. RUclipsrs and artists should expect that there will be differing reviews of their products, unless they are expecting paid, less honest reviews. I'm sorry you have had all this hate and you definitely don't deserve it. I hope people go outside into the world a bit more and spend less time obsessing over things like this. I hope you have a less drama filled week next week.
I am late to all this since I have been so busy with work but just wanted to add my two cents that I also agree with all the rest of the people that said that your review was 100% truthful and unbiased as are all of the ones you do Lindsay. We are totally backing you up in this. I never buy any paints without checking your channel first to see if you have reviewed them and you have never failed me to this day.
Thank you for your reviews. I’ve referred back to them multiple times through the years if I’m in the market for something or want to try something new. I’ve always had good results with my purchases when I’ve done so. It’s different when it’s big name brands or a “faceless” company that’s being reviewed. People get emotional and that can cause an imbalance with a person being able to step back for a moment and be objective..and I’m seeing that, sadly…which is quite ridiculous! Thank you for your honesty 😁🥰
It's a review, not a popularity contest! I always find Lindsay's reviews helpful and honest, without the drama! I love the colors of Kristy's palette but for $42 I couldn't afford it, so I made my own with dupes.
Thank you Lindsay for your honest review. You are a gem. I adore K and you. I have heard her watercolour books are not watercolour paper and this was back , years ago. DeeDee W had a review I think. Even As a hobbyist I have suddenly turned into a paint snob 🤣but if I had the cash I would buy her paints and entire set to support her because she truly made me fearless ! And I would do that as a thank you for her lesson to me.❤️. Stay Gold LW ! ❤
This was a very polite and nice review about a series of painting supplies. That said, I kinda want to get my hands on a set so that I can do a bunch of tests and have a first hand experience and opinion about these! haha XD
After reading Manuel J Smith's brilliant book When I Say No I Feel Guilty, I finally learnt how to stop my unhealthy habit of people pleasing. I learnt that I have the right to judge my own behaviour, thoughts and emotions and could take the responsibility for their initiation and consequences upon myself. I also learnt how to tell when people were trying to take that right away from me and the ways they might try to manipulate me into doing what they wanted. I learnt that, just like me, they too had a right to judge their own behaviour, thoughts and emotions and could take the responsibility for their consequences upon themselves. I learnt that I don't have to agree with them nor upset myself about it. X
I checked out Becca Hillburn, and appreciated the time she put into her reviews. Thanks for the poster that recommended her, as comments can really help others. We can all learn from each other! Sadly, I was dismayed by the amount of negativity and the wasted time that the comments generated. It isn't something generally seen in the art world, as artists are more interested int he art than personalities. (Although I could be painting instead of writing this, so mea culpa.) If one reviewed a company's products, they are not lambasted with nasty comments, as that is a faceless organization. It seems as if some respondents are confusing an unfavorable personal opinion to an attack on the "person behind the product". Consumer Reports and similar sites that review products report the pros and the cons. If Lindsay (or any other YT reviewer) incessantly reported "everything is awesome", there would be no point in making the video. Her "job" is to give her honest opinion, pros and cons. We are indeed fortunate to have too much choice in art supplies!
Oh gosh, thank you! It's one thing to support an artist and their art, it's another to be willing to metaphorically die protecting their products. I am grateful to anyone who buys my comics and enjoys them, but I don't expect anyone to tip at windmills on my behalf. My reviews are based on my own struggles finding art supplies I loved and the appreciation I felt towards others who pointed me in a good direction. I love Lindsay's reviews and feel she can find kindness when I sometimes cannot, and we speak to different audiences, so I love hearing her thoughts!
@@Nattosoup Becca, thanks ever so much for your gracious reply. If one has already formed an opinion prior to using a product based on fondness for the creator, that really is not an objective opinion. If the reason I am buying ANY product is the name behind it, to me that is not valid. Those who are giving of themselves to post on ANY topic on YT have helped thousands. It has greatly enriched many lives. It has certainly saved me a lot of money, and I salute the creators. Since I know you value accuracy as an educator, the phrase from Don Quixote is, "tilting at windmills". Thanks again for your time, dedication, and sacrifice.
Hey Becca! Mad props to your "easily influenced" series. This will probably be my last influencer product review (although JD has some pretty cute stuff 😆)
@joykruczay I'm just glad you got the reference! Commenting on mobile seems to short circuit my brain 😂 I'm sure I've purchased art supplies because I like the artist behind the collab, but I KNOW I've bought comics and artbooks because I have a personal fondness for the creator. There's a reason I don't review comics- all my indie reccs would be 'the art is amazing and the artist is my friend!'
@thefrugalcrafter JD's stuff is always so intriguing- if it were more accessible and affordable for us US folks, I'd have a harder time saying no! What's the saying- a fool and her money are soon parted when it comes to art supplies? Something like that 😂
Lindsay, I watched your video review of Kristy’s product line and felt (as you always do unashamedly) that you were true to yourself and honest. I’ve watched many RUclipsrs be positive about every product they are sent, maybe they’re easy to please, or maybe they’re positioning themselves for more free goodies. Lindsay,n you don’t fall into either of those camps…you’re just honest with the products you use and the information you’re given. That is a great service to your community. I’m in the middle of watching Kristy’s response, and as passionate as she is about her amazing artfulness, her products and her philosophy of creativity, I’m not surprised as her first disappointment. She’s hurt yes, but she’s a big girl and a good business woman, she’ll recover. Anytime someone puts their products out there (I know, I’ve been in that position), that’s your baby, and it’s hard not to take it seriously. You know too and you have products out there you want everyone to love. But things happen and flaws happen. I pray you two can reconcile this and move on. I love both of you! God bless.
Lindsay, this review is exactly why i go to your reviews first! You were supportive of the artist, but very honest in your review of the products. That said, Kristy has done beautiful design work in her tins and packaging, i've always loved her coloring books. However, the paint looked so much like the two other brands you showed, and the grittiness was a turn-off. All the coloring books i have that claim to have watercolor paper are either cardstock or some weird textured stuff, so thats nothing new. Thanks for the very useful review
Thank you Lindsay for your honest opinion. I have been drawn to the case and the colors for a while and just never went through with the purchase. I still love the colors but I wouldn't be happy with the quality. Have a great week!
@@thefrugalcrafter It was the first set that actually worked for me (except the three 'metallics') and I still carry 30 of them as my base set almost all the time.
Thanks for the review. It confirmed my initial thoughts. I do tend to buy most things just to be supportive, however, within a reasonable price range. I absolutely love her ceramic water holder, and the cute paint brush holders as well. I’ll pass on the paints but I do like the empty palette.
As a professional artist, I thought your review was a great example of a productive and helpful critique. Although I haven’t done watercolor painting in ages I had been watching videos to see what’s available now. We tend to fall in love with our own “projects” and it is nice to get a different perspective. It helped me specifically because I was considering getting the paints. Instead I’ve decided to get the brushes and a tin or two. I have paints and think this set is better suited to someone who maybe doesn’t have a collection of paints or a background using and mixing colors. The set really encourages exploration of color without the fears of the traditional color mixing class-also the watercolor set does come with an online class so that factors in to the price to some degree. I think the brushes are well curated and glad to get your thoughts and that will now be my first purchase. I didn’t consider getting the tins initially but you sold me on them. I always end up with boring basic storage and these are a great option. I’m going to mention this in my reviews so Kristy and others know you provided a lot of good insight as to who each of these products are serving best. ❤
I bought the paints and brushes a while back. Even though I have enough big name professional paints to last me a lifetime, I find I keep going to these paints again and again when painting in my sketchbooks as well as greeting cards and postcards. I simply love the colors. As for the brushes, they have a lot of snap that I like when using them in particular circumstances. No regrets from purchasing either. Thank you for your review. 🥰
I would say they do spark joy!! Especially for us people who have been intimidated to ever get into watercolor and thinking you can only start if you have all the nicest quality supplies. Kristy always encouraged people to paint with whatever they have. I may have never jumped into painting if I hadn't found her channel.
I'm so glad Kristy finally "worked up the courage" to send you some of her delightful supplies☺~ I've gradually collected many of her older products & will gladly add more! I really agree with your reviews. My only letdown is the paint coloring books, due to the paper, which easily pills. I adore the paint tins & brushes! I have the smaller paint tin & will likely get the bigger one too, because, collection! "You" could easily customize the small tin by swapping to paint pans you want, so it'd be like a travel size version of her larger tin (& would very easily fit into one of the charming brush/travel bags). Thanks so much for fairly reviewing these lovely Paint Crush goodies, Lindsay. 🖤❤💛💙🖤
Thank you for your honest, kind review explaining the pros and cons of these products. I value your opinion because of the thoroughness you give in a review. The only paints I have are the Meiliang Pretty Excellent which I chose because of your opinion. I appreciate your reviews.
Love love love Kristy’s brush sets! Each of her brushes I pick up becomes my new favorite. Rebound and quality are wonderful. I went on line to check out the price of the empty pallets. They are all sold out, waiting for restock.
I have both sets of her brushes but not her paint. Yes, she sparks joy!! I can't speak to professional levels, but she is wonderful at encouraging people who are new to watercolor! I love Kristy! I love her brushes.
I have all of her products, and once again your review is spot on. The paint is fun not professional quality. I bought it for the case. I appreciate your expertise and knowledge and honesty. You take your reviews seriously and put a lot of time and thought into them. You’re the best.
Ok, I watched the video and I did scan the comments to check on snarky responses. Wow who knew Lindsey was a heartless gangsta type? The people with negative comments don’t seem to have any really substance in their comments. Just emotional daggers. Lindsey you rock on lady.
There seems to be some confusion over what is termed "professional" or "artist quality" paint. It is a consensus agreed upon over many years by many people. There's no "disagreement" between Lindsay and Kristy on what professional artist paints are. Lindsay is stating a commonly agreed upon truth in the watercolor community. It refers to pigment quality and concentration, lightfastness, ease of rewetting and several other very concrete qualities. In my mind, this paint is immediately disqualified because it states on the box that it uses dyes in addition to pigments--that means the paintings will not retain their original colors over time. A truly professional artist would not sell paintings that will not last for the consumer. That said, there is ABSOLUTELY a place for beautiful paints that spark creative joy, that are fun to play with! Of all of the people who paint with watercolor, very few will be put up in galleries or be sold to other people. And if one doesn't care about the legacy of one's paintings--whether great-grandchildren will enjoy them to the same degree--then it simply doesn't matter that they are professional artist quality. In that case, what matters is whether they are fun and easy to use. And it seems to me that these are. The disconnect here has come from the fact that, in general, Kristy's followers are not pigment nerds like Lindsay's followers are. That's not bad--not everyone has the bandwidth for that breadth of knowledge. It's simply a cultural difference. And that is what has led to this misunderstanding. It's a shame they brought their pitchforks to Lindsay's channel. That said, it's generally advised for professionals to refrain from publicly commenting on, or even mentioning, reviews of their work. I understand Rice's feelings and reaction and how hard it probably was to keep that to herself, but in my opinion, she really should have. It's a hard lesson to learn.
Hello Lindsay, I always enjoy your reviews and follow you to learn more about all the products you review. I find that you are honest and kind about any criticism you may have. Thank you for another great review. Take care and see you soon 🤗
Thanks for the review Lindsay! I had to buy the paints when you showed them because the tin is adorable. I think your review is spot on, they are fun to use and I’m happy that mixing with them doesn’t make mud. I’m a sucker for the cute stuff too 😂
Thanks for the review. Mostly I'm on a "no buy stuff" year. But her brushes are on my list. I do enjoy Kristy's style and energy. So purchasing her brushes will be in support of her. I will probably only get one set of brushes, not both, so I need to re-watch your video to figure out which set I can use. I agree her packaging and palette is really pretty. And it means a lot when I spread out my supplies that they look pretty and inspiring. Many HUGS
I am so glad that you said the book is not watercolor paper. That was the first product I bought about 2 years ago, along with the brushes. The paint wasn’t available at the time. That was the first watercolor experience I had. I was devastated because the paper pilled on everything I tried to paint. I had no idea. What I was doing, just reading the instructions in the book…. The paint I had was from TJ Max, I’m sure it was probably student grade and not the greatest quality. I think it was Meeden but idk… I actually stopped watching Kristy’s videos because I was discouraged from the experience I had. I haven’t gone back, I didn’t unsubscribe though.
That's super disappointing. Pilling is the worst! Cotton Watercolor Paper is expensive... and lovely. I use Bee mixed media for fooling around with budget paint. It's good fun at an affordable price... and it doesn't pill.
This was 2 years ago. After I had that experience I found you Lindsay 😊 I’ve bought your classes and I’m getting better, I had to pause my progress in the 30 days to better watercolor, I’ll get back eventually. I’m glad that you said it wasn’t watercolor paper in her book because that was my first experience and I was so excited and motivated to use her book to learn. I don’t think it’s good that she doesn’t explain that it is not “real” watercolor paper. Hopefully anyone else starting out there may find this review first to avoid discouragement.
Ooooh I love me some Lindsay reviews! Thank you for all the wonderful content and tons of uploads. You have one of the most reliable, fun and informative channels on YT. *I also appreciate your honesty about the paints because I really trust your opinion and expertise. I've eyed those paints for a couple of years but the price held me back. Now I have no qualms about not buying them. I follow Kristy and think she's very talented and makes adorable designs. And I agree with you, those paint tins are yummy!
Selfishly, I’m glad about the hubbub because it meant I found this review and channel. Thank you for such an informative review - not just about the products but information like buying ox gall in a pan to make colours flow. Really helpful. I was tempted by the brush sets but the cost to have them in the uk is prohibitive. Thanks again for the review.
Thank you Lindsay. You really didn't have any spicy takes on this one...... and I appreciate you pointing out she may have been formulating these for the best-use case being her coloring books. (Different strokes for different folks amiright?) That said, the "dye boosted pigments" are not my personal paint choice. But I can see these still being a fun ride.
You are so welcome! She said that was a misprint on the package and her paints never had dyes. There was a communication problem from the factory I guess. I would think the neons have to have dyes in them tho, just the nature of the beast.
Yeah, she mentioned when these launched that they were professional paints, and I took one look at what she did with them and knew they were not. That said, I like that her take on watercolors is unique and fun.
What makes paints professional quality? And how are hers lacking? They are pretty comparable to my many professional brands. And I’ve seen plenty of professional watercolor painters enjoy them. Without complaints
@@LCLandI recommend that you watch several of Lindsay's reviews including this one. She clearly and objectively stated why she didn't think they were professional paints. There are particular standards that make a paint professional quality. I think the paints are pretty but not something I'd purchase because of the opacity.
@@LCLand They have that grit and grain you see in lower quality watercolors, and no lightfastness information. That doesn't make them less fun to play with, but I would not sell art I made with them. Please don't mistake what I'm saying as me insinuating there is no value here...there is! But they are NOT professional quality, and anyone who has been painting seriously can see it right away.
Lindsay, thank you so much for your review. Anytime I'm considering a new purchase you are my go to. I particularly love that you use products before you review them and you are extremely honest. I also want to say, I have been using your watercolor brush set. I love them, especially the cats tongue. Your attention to detail when developing that set really shines. : )
Not sure why there's a kerfuffle over your review, it was fair and also kind. Overall it was a positive review 🤷🏻.
@@minkg8178 I thought so too.
you are very welcome:) @@gwenster
Thank you, great explanation!
Well said!
A simply brilliant explanation and also brilliantly simple! Thank you 🙏 👍
Agree, well said.
Truth!
I cannot believe the response of Rice and her fans to this incredibly kind and fair review! Reviews are for consumers and this one is very helpful.
Thank you!
Thank you!
So is Lindsay!
thank you!@@hearterin294
Yessss! I want honesty. I use Daniel Smith and hate Arteza so I'd be upset. However her design palettes are so ADORABLE!
Thank you so much!
I couldn’t have said it better myself!!!
Amen
Well said!
Amen!! Perfectly said!!!
Agreed!
Without proper pigment information, I won’t spend money on the product. Thanks, Lindsay, for your honest and thorough reviews.
You are so welcome!
Thank you for watching. I have no problems with Kristy responding to question about her products in the comments:)
She's too concerned in her videos with repeating "What do you think? Tell me in the comments" over and over in her videos. I had to unsubscribe, it was obnoxious. It just felt very fake and "I'm doing this for views, not to actually help anyone out."
It's a shame because you're missing out on two fantastic brush sets.
... and therein is the trouble.
Like not having pigment info, LF rating, ASTM info, etc
Unfortunately today many companies especially on Amazon, all use the same words to describe their art supplies.
Thank you for your kind and measured response :)
This comment is everything. Thank you.
Lee x
Thank you!
Maybe a scientist can write a paper on when para-social relationships go wrong 😅
I hope your doing well & this hasn't impacted your mental health too much.
And this is why you are my top reviewer - you say it how it is. Thank You Lindsay!
Wow, thank you!
Kristy had no problem with Lindsey‘s review. Her issue was with the nasty comments of the trolls that were being posted in Lindsey‘s comment section.
Thank you so much!!
Glad you like them!
Same! I always check to see if Lindsay has done a review of a product I’m not sure abt or am new too. I’ve watch the @thefrugalcrafter since the beginning. Thank you Lindsay.
Same here. I always check Lindsay's channel before even thinking about getting art supplies. @thefrugalcrafter Lindsay is the best!
Very fair and honest review
Just my view point: I’m specifically referencing the claim of “professional paints” & would like to state that there is global standard practices which are adhered to when paint manufacturers make marketing claims and labels of their products as professional quality artists grade paints.
Thank you, I really appreciate it. It's been a rough week 💗
I don’t usually comment, but this review was completely fair and truthful. It was actually quite positive and kind given the claims of the product 🤔
I appreciate this, thank you:)
I stand behind everything you said…you were honest. That’s why we watch you…BECAUSE YOU ARE HONEST! You have an amazing following…keep doing you!!!❤
I always appreciate your thoroughness, Lindsay!
I don't:) I was honest, and I'm sure I will have a few upset comments, but overall, I liked the products. My only issue was the word "professional"
Did not know there was a kerfuffle until last night. I don't understand why. You were honest and respectful in your comments. While also showing honest enjoyment in in many of her products. You'll always be my go to for product reviews. You've never steered me wrong.
Thank you!
Thank you for understanding:)
Thank you so much!!
I have never been disappointed with anything you’ve given a positive review of, therefore I always look to your reviews as honest ones with no agenda. Thanks for that effort.
I appreciate that!
I appreciate how you dive into the product reviews. You share so much information with your viewers. Thank you for helping people better understand products. 🎨🖌️
You are so welcome!
Thank you:)
I had same thoughts ❤
Thanks, I'm sure it will. It's Been a wild week!
You are so welcome!
I don't understand the drama at all. Oh well, good engagement, I guess.
So yes in my live I made some jokes that some might consider off putting because I have done all I can to make people comfortable with what I’ve created but when it’s not enough, I throw my hands up and decide to be silly here and there to cope :)
And to the Arches comment… I did call to everyone’s attention that I was using Academy which my audience knows I historically compare favorably to Arches.
I really do appreciate your honest reviews. And I think you were kind to Kristy. Keep it up!
Thank you so much!
I am so glad you love the paint and other stuff!
Thank you for the unbiased review. I found it to be very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Lindsay it was a very honest review. You gave credit where credit was due. I honestly do not know how anyone could be upset! Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much!!
Kristy has said over and over that she is not upset with Lindsey’s review. She is upset with nasty trolls in the comments of Lindsey’s video.
Happy to help:)
Lindsay, you're just the best! I'm always so proud to know you. Great and kind review!
Lindsay was sent the old packaging. The new packaging features all the pigment info :)
Commenting with Lindsay’s permission
@@KristyRice I appreciate your reply. Good to know that pigment info is included. All the best!
Thank you so much!
While I do enjoy using Kristy’s products, I do feel your review was fair and balanced. Having tried almost every watercolor, I understand your review of the paint. Yet, it does spark joy when I paint with it.
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing!
I got her brushes when they first came out and no issue at all with them,, they work great. I also got a set of her watercolor postcards, that I folded and made into mini folios with ribbon for the bindings as gifts. They were a big hit. I paid the extra as you said to support an artist. No regrets at all.
Good to know!
Grateful for your thorough, honest reviews & have really enjoyed your last couple podcasts about using what we have & creating more/consuming less. Easy to get caught up in the marketing of stuff and lose sight of why we’re doing what we’re doing.
Glad it was helpful!
What’s even more ironic to me is that you aren’t a paint snob 😂
They should’ve actually watched your videos.
A very fair and enjoyable review. I completely agree with supporting your favourite RUclips artists. I’m pleased to see that the empty tin is also available. A great way to use your own paints, yet still support and advertise Kristy. Thanks Lindsay! 👩🏻🎨🖌️🎨
Thank you kindly!
I love Paintcrush too and Kristy's art and style, and think there is no cause for hard feelings.
thank you for understanding :)
I like your honest reviews, I also like your tutorials, you've tought me a lot over the years! I also like watching Kristy's channel. Everyone has a different style and that is good.
I agree!
Best reviews on the market. I appreciate your knowledge and honesty! Thank you thank you. Much love!!❤❤❤❤
You are so welcome!
So true!
@@thefrugalcrafter You are such a force of nature to be able to respond to all of these comments!
I didn’t understand that
Im hardcore Davinci that my fave. Then maybe sennelier and m graham and Holbein and a gallo, ds, wn etc. rs
Hers are not in my top ten faves. But they are much nicer than prima! I haven’t used the student grades you compared them to but I would love it if you would compare to artist grade. Professional grade. So I could see how far off base I am. And she is. For calling them prof
Maybe I’m wrong.
I have not deleted anything.
Thanks so much for the honest, fair, and not-mean review 😊
Thank you:)
Thank you for your honest unbiased assesment. I also look to your channel for reviews....and if there was ever a doubt (?) that you were not REAL with with your reviews, this review should put that to rest. I can' t thank you enough. I enjoy both your channels. Keep being Lindsay!
I appreciate that!
Oh Lindsay! I could tell this was a tough review for you! Very difficult to review another you tuber with a large following. Thank you you for your considered review and tact. I left reading the comments until now and all I can say is it makes for interesting reading. Thanks again ❤
It sure does.
Thank you!
Thanks!
You are so welcome! Kristy is a dear, and it pained me to be critical of the paint, but I told her I would be honest.
@@thefrugalcrafter I think if it really pained you to be critical, you would have refrained from reviewing her products.
This was a very polite and nice review about a series of painting supplies.
That said, I kinda want to get my hands on a set so that I can do a bunch of tests and have a first hand experience and opinion about these! haha XD
I'd watch that video! 😁
Good luck!
Commenting on mobile seems to short circuit my brain 😂
I'm sure I've purchased art supplies because I like the artist behind the collab, but I KNOW I've bought comics and artbooks because I have a personal fondness for the creator.
God bless.
As far as I know, everything is fine between us.

The dagger is kristy's favorite kind of brush I think that's why she included the two sizes
Good to know!
I appreciate your generosity as well as your honesty in your product review. I always trust you
I appreciate that!
Thank you Lindsay for your honest opinion. I have been drawn to the case and the colors for a while and just never went through with the purchase. I still love the colors but I wouldn't be happy with the quality. Have a great week!
Glad it was helpful!
Mungyo watercolours are underappreciated; I am glad you've mentioned them.
I totally agree!
The empty pallets are less than I thought they would be. The 24 is $21 but still out of stock.
I want all of the stuff!!!😂
Thanks for sharing! I am glad that you are enjoying them!
I love my Painters pot! Been using it since it first came out. Also love the brushes.
Great review: fair, honest and kind. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
I would say they do spark joy!! Especially for us people who have been intimidated to ever get into watercolor and thinking you can only start if you have all the nicest quality supplies. Kristy always encouraged people to paint with whatever they have. I may have never jumped into painting if I hadn't found her channel.
That's awesome! Thank you for sharing, I am glad you are enjoying the paint!
You are welcome:)
Thank you for your honest, kind review explaining the pros and cons of these products. I value your opinion because of the thoroughness you give in a review. The only paints I have are the Meiliang Pretty Excellent which I chose because of your opinion. I appreciate your reviews.
Glad it was helpful!
Great thorough review Lindsay! I always appreciate your watercolor deep dives!
Thank you so much!
I appreciate this review and all of your reviews. There is a standard for professional watercolor.
Love love love Kristy’s brush sets! Each of her brushes I pick up becomes my new favorite. Rebound and quality are wonderful. I went on line to check out the price of the empty pallets. They are all sold out, waiting for restock.
I have both sets of her brushes and I love them too x
She emailed me links and prices and I put them in the video description. They are more affordable than I thought they be!
Thanks for sharing!
Ok, I watched the video and I did scan the comments
to check on snarky responses.
Oh thank you!
Thanks for the review Lindsay! I had to buy the paints when you showed them because the tin is adorable. I think your review is spot on, they are fun to use and I’m happy that mixing with them doesn’t make mud. I’m a sucker for the cute stuff too 😂
The struggle is real 😫
Thanks for the review. Mostly I'm on a "no buy stuff" year. But her brushes are on my list. I do enjoy Kristy's style and energy. So purchasing her brushes will be in support of her. I will probably only get one set of brushes, not both, so I need to re-watch your video to figure out which set I can use. I agree her packaging and palette is really pretty. And it means a lot when I spread out my supplies that they look pretty and inspiring. Many HUGS
You are so welcome!
Thank you Lindsay, so many of us depend on your honesty and art supply advice.
You are so welcome!
Great review Lindsay. It must be hard reviewing your fellow youtubers products but I think this was really fair. The tins really are pretty!
Thanks so much!
Rock on Lindsay, you are the go-to for reviews for a reason! Honest, thorough, kind and fun.
Thank you!
Try real watercolor paper, it's a game changer!
By real watercolor paper, I believe Lindsay is saying use 100% cotton paper! Any brand just look for the cotton content! Best of luck!
Glad you like them!
I'm glad it was helpful and welcome to the channel. It's typically not this exciting over here 😀
Thank you Lindsay. You really didn't have any spicy takes on this one...... and I appreciate you pointing out she may have been formulating these for the best-use case being her coloring books. (Different strokes for different folks amiright?)
That said, the "dye boosted pigments" are not my personal paint choice. But I can see these still being a fun ride.
You are so welcome! She said that was a misprint on the package and her paints never had dyes. There was a communication problem from the factory I guess. I would think the neons have to have dyes in them tho, just the nature of the beast.
@@thefrugalcrafter fair enough!
Yeah, she mentioned when these launched that they were professional paints, and I took one look at what she did with them and knew they were not. That said, I like that her take on watercolors is unique and fun.
It is fun!
What makes paints professional quality? And how are hers lacking? They are pretty comparable to my many professional brands. And I’ve seen plenty of professional watercolor painters enjoy them. Without complaints
@@LCLand Come on, please.
You are so welcome!
