Exactly. I’m not creative at all but you do not have to be to junk journal. I made my first one a few years back. I have made several since. 2 were for weddings. I made part of it as a guess signing book and the rest was for the Groom & Bride to fill out about their wedding and the first part of their marriage. I was scared t death they wouldn’t like it because I love them to be gators mouth and dripping with goodys and full of ephemera, but they both loved it.

@@PennyJomany years ago I made a wedding card, which ended up being more a journal (before I even knew about journals). From that one card I got several requests for others. I was worried that the bride would think, “great, homemade, how cheesy”. Years later she still tells me that she looks at that card like she looks at her wedding pictures. And I still get requests for cards/journals.

I think you nailed it right on the head as to why a junk journal. I have made several, my favourite is to my late husband where I have made a journal of all his work sheets; car licenses any piece of paper that has his writing on, photographs all kinds of bits that would otherwise be hidden away in a drawer or thrown away , is now safely in a book dedicated to his life with me, I love it

I can truly say it is therapeutic. My home was destroyed in hurricane Laura in 2020 and we had to live in a small trailer for almost two years. This was extremely traumatic. This is when I learned about junk journals. I made one about our hurricane experience (We stayed and were in the house when the tree came through.) Junk journals kept me sane and gave me calm while we were going through all the decision making and rebuilding.

I recently found a pad of aviation paper and put together a junk journal for my granddaughter who is going off to school to become a pilot. She absolutely loved it and I am so pleased! We are putting finishing touches in it together. Her own creativity came out, we copied her college acceptance letter to use in it and some lined paper to log her fly time. I used an old blue book for the right blue color and had an old atlas for maps. Rubber stamps and stencils too. Such fun!

It's difficult to explain to a non-artist why we create stuff. In my case, my mental health tanks if I don't break out the paints every day. Junk journals are a work of art in themselves, and in my opinion the cost of not doing them outweighs the time, effort, and cost associated with creating them. As long as you are not neglecting your loved ones, don't let anyone put down your creative work.

Thank you for clearifying this topic. I love recycling things and using them in an unexpected way and I love paper and save and rescue every piece of it, I myself do envelopes with those papers, greeting cards and things like that for creative reasons and I do nature journaling. But I never got the point of making those junk journals and thought there might be some kind of "magic reason" for doing this. I got it now. There is a kind of magic to those people who do them.

So glad you are open to trying one. 👍🏻 They are a kind of magic, and they grow in meaning as you are assembling. The more time and effort put into them, the more special it becomes. 😉

We are all different. I love waching people making junk journals, but it has to be functional for me. I am trying to make one now from a big paper bag and i am collecting the signatures now, but since this is the first time making a journal i find it really difficult.
As they have to be functional, it is going to be my personal journal where each signature contains a topic i love, like autumn (photos, pictures from magazines, recipes for food to make in autumn),
Christmas (old christmas cards, recipes, traditions, wishlists, photos of our christmas trees through the years, aso),
education (copy of diplomas, class photos, friends from school, teachers that inspired me),
one signature about my son, and so on.
A book about me and my life.

The project is as huge or as small as she decides to make it! Also, she has as many years to work on it as she wants! We don’t have to be so busy busy in our lives. Another thing, if she does a book like this, she would have something to hand down to her children About herself and her life. I was the family historian among my brothers and sisters, so I got something like this right after my mom passed away. I learned so many things I didn’t know. I wouldn’t have ever known them because she got dimensions before she passed away and could no longer tell me anything. But when I got information from a book that I found that she had been keeping for me for after she passed away, I had a sweet treasure trove of hers. So the thing to remember is, don’t look for pages that have the categories on them that you want to write about. Write your own categories! Then put whatever you want on the page. You don’t have to be paid after page after page like a scrapbook. She could take one page that says recipes, and just put her favorite recipes on. Like her three favorite recipes, I don’t know and maybe which grandma started them. And maybe a picture you could still do this in a junk journal type of way. I know she’s got this! She doesn’t need to think of it as a project!

Margarete, I thoughly enjoyed this video for lots of reasons. In a way it connected to your prompt for July "free". I find playing with journalling in whatever form, has a freedom about it. For my sanity I need to write about stuff, whether about events ( in what is basically my mundane life) or my feelings and moods. For me everything is connected to my faith and to include Gods Word is life giving. I hope anyone new to journaling will give it a go after watching your super video. Thank you. Pauline. This is a wonderful intro to junk journals! I will refer people who ask to your thorough and informative video. Thank you! I love the process of making a junk journal. Each one has its own personality, and some are just works of art in and of themselves that won’t be “used” in any way. I have purchased a few journals over the years just for their artistic (and tutorial) value! I had planned to include Junk Journal July in my current “memory-keeping journal,” but the thrill of creating a new journal specifically for July has changed my mind 😂. I don't make junk journals. I couldn't understand the point. But watching your video, I think what keeps me from enjoying something like this is that you almost have to have a collection mindset, gathering yhings that might one day be used in a journal. I like gathering pretty paper for card making. Other than that, if it isn't used promptly, out it goes! I have neither storage space nor mental space to gather little things like this. But if you enjoy it, great! 💛😊

Margarete - you have changed my life! Before watching this today I had never heard of the term "Junk Journal ". I like reste a journal for myself with calendars and dates and appointments and recipes and and journaling and sketches or notes of something I’m studying . As well as even shopping lists. This was the 90s
Then about 10 yrs ago - I think - I fell into the wasi tape etc decorating as I’m retired and don’t need to keep track of everything in my phone.
So that was fun for a while but kinda teenage- ish withe the stickers and stuff.
NOW you have introduced me into Junk Journaling and we have a problem. When I was young my dad shared his love of some boxes with me- either the quality or image or size, they would always come back at Christmas with a pair of socks in them and then disappear again into a stash.
So do I have boxes! I have beautiful boxes and handy boxes and oddly shaped boxes some how store in the little space Iive in. OMG I can do something with them! My mind is twirling! I now need to figure out the bones of the thing . I’m sure you’ll give me some tips and I can fall down another rabbit hole! Well - that’s what retirement is for…correct?
    THANK YOU!

Hello friend. I know it’s been a while. I have had a horribly painful year. I still cherish you and your videos, although I haven’t been around for a while. I hope you have a wonderful day. Thank you for what you do

Hello, my friend! I’m so sorry things have been rough recently. I still think about you and hope you have the time to take care of yourself among all the things happening around you. I’m wishing you the best 😘

It took me a long time to do a junk journal but once I did, I was hooked! I love creating different things to put in them. I must admit mine aren't so junky, lol. I suffer from chronic pain, and it helps take my mind off of it (as much as it can) for a while.

Yes, and they can turn into a big project but it's okay because you do it a little at a time. I do, anyway. I like that I can spread out the tasks and squeeze out so much joy from working on all those pages. 💜

I love using the junk journals that I make as glue books. I like to have a theme in each glue book. At the moment my theme is nature. Thank you so much for making this video. I love your videos 🇬🇧❤

I call my junk journal "my joy journal"! Every time something or some experience brings me joy I write in it or attach mementos to the pages. Its so much fun to create them!
