      Rear wiper is a must for a hatchback in snow/rainy country. Rear camera too, since we can load the luggage at the back to full height.

      I ma used to drive vehicles that don't even have a rear window at all. So even if I think it would be better with one, it won't stop me from buying one.

      No, it's not enough to put me off buying one, but it's annoying just the same.
      I can't believe that someone hasn't developed a secondary market stick on one. Maybe battery and recharged through the glass, or a specialist tool to drill a hole.
      I live in Costa Rica and it rains A LOT! It's going to be interesting to see how things work out!
      Thanks for posting.

      There is no way that winter salt splashed by passing cars and trucks in Canada will be cleaned by wind. You need to use windshield washer and a wiper.
      Using rear view cameras also get the salt on them. So the rear view cameras help but it too is not better than a wiper.

    I have had an I5 from last September, here in the UK the weather in our winters demand a rear wiper I am now fitting a rear camera as part of a dash cam to get round the problem. My other beef is having to switch of the lane assist each time, I want it off permanently!

    I live in Canada and I am considering buying an Ioniq 5. But, yes, the absence of a rear wiper has an impact on my decision. Not being able to see out of my rear window for a good part of the winter, and having to get out of my car to clear the rear window everytime I need to back into a charging station is a sizeable irritant to me.

    My wife and my son have both bought the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 (RWD, Preferred). They absolutely loved their cars.
    The one and only critism they have is the lack of rear wiper.
    I have order myself the Ioniq 5 Preferred AWD Long Range / Ultimate package in last December. I should receive the vehicle in May 2023.
    I really hope that it will have a rear wiper. It is a safety issue.
    We live in the province of Québec, Canada. Our cold and snowy winter are severe. A rear wiper is a must.
    Also, we have notice that due to the dirt and snow, some sensors were getting blocked and causing the HDA and cruise control to shut down.
    So on long trip in bad winter conditions, we had to stop to clean front and rear sensors and the windshield.
    This is annoying, but totally normal under the circumstances. But the lack of a rear wiper is flagrant at all time, all year round (rainy and snowy conditions). It is a safety issue.
    I hope Hyundai will listen to their customers, to the car reviews about their Ioniq 5 and add a rear wiper to the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5.

  • @wdentondouglas
    @wdentondouglas 2 года назад +2

    I don't miss the wiper, but I live in Florida and don't deal with dirty snow. My biggest gripe is the sound of the unused seatbelts rattling. The front passenger seat belt bounces against the seat when not being used, and the back seat belts bounce against the side of the car nearly every time a passenger leaves the car. A little piece of foam between the seatbelt and seat fixes the front, but only repositioning helps in the rear. This car is so good, it's hard to find any fault.

    • @ApplesnCastles
      @ApplesnCastles 2 года назад

      I agree with the little rattles & so forth, I have a tapping noise in mine which I cannot locate / pinpoint & Hyundai UK are very unreasonable about having a dealer rectify it even under the 1st year of warranty. Their warranty is a challenge use compared to other manufacturers in my opinion.

    Living in the kingdom of RoadSalts, (Montreal, Canada), I will tell you that wipers are ESSENTIAL!!! Especially while crossing lanes in heavy traffic. In those conditions you can’t go fast enough to spoil away salty fluids by airflow. When the liquid sets on the glass it spreads and dries quickly to form a thick white veil that you can’t see through, making it very difficult to maneuver safely. This alone could tick off Canada safety officials to blacklist the IONIQ 5 and stop sales here…😵‍💫😟

    To answer the last question, I think I wouldn’t buy the Ionic 5 because of that issue. I live in Quebec and winter conditions are extremely difficult. I have seen too many Ionic 5 with rear windows filled with calcium residue that left no clear rear view for the driver. I once saw a guy stopped on a street corner to wash is rear window with a squeegee. They definitively need to fix that issue for winter markets like our. Thanks

    Personally, living in the UK I haven't had any problems. I will have to see what it is like with grit on the road in winter though.
    One thing I recommend is using Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions ceramic spray on the rear windscreen, as suggested by The Ioniq Guy on RUclips. That helps, though without the visibility was fine with me. It is also great at reducing the need to wash the car in general as rain can basically wash away the dirt now.

    I mean this is so basic i don't even know why they even thought of leaving it off. If you have ever been in slow moving or standing traffic and it snows then it builds up quickly and without a wiper it needs the heater element to be switched on which I'm sure uses more power than a wiper motor and they definately get snow in S.Korea.
    Even in the UK were we dont get snow that much we do get very dirty salty roads in the winter and that stuff get everywhere and once on the glass if you dont have a washer/wiper you have to get out and clean it off your self, same applies to bird crap which dries on like concrete. This is just a case of well Tesla doesn't have one so we cant have one either. Someone at the testing stage wasn't doing there job or being ignored for the sake of a clean but flawed design.

    Having just bought an Ioniq 5 in Ireland where it rains from time to time 😊I can say that I would not consider another unless there was a rear wiper fitted to future models. I love the car but this is a huge omission. Added to this is the fact that a badly placed rear camera also gets covered in water running from the rear hatch and road dirt leaves one with zero rear visibility in bad weather.

I have a Ioniq 5 Ultimate on order (not even God knows when it will arrive) and it would be nice to be given the option of a rear wiper. I live in Toronto and we do get real winter here. Rear cameras are nice, but even they get dirty and I have just gotten used to wiping the rear camera lens of the Volt off every time I get out. Have to do the same with my F150 and Ranger. The air flow clearly does not hit the rear window. I have had mine for 2 months and already I see its going to be a problem. Although the car is fitted with many censors warning cars are approaching, I think it is dangerous to have a dirty rear window. I am not looking forward to winter, I hate to think what it will be like then with the salt drying on the back window and not being able to see out. Thats what its going to be like. In my driving test I was told to use thre rear view mirror to keep a visual check on the cars around you. If you have a dirty window on a longer journey it would soon become dirty and now that becomes dangerous. I think Hyundai should recall and fit wipers on the grounds of safety.

    It needs a rear wiper here in Québec Canada. During winter ❄️ 🥶 time, we can get over 40 cm of snow ⛄️ in one day and I snowboard. I was one of the first in the country to have preordered the car and could of bought it months ago. I cancelled my purchase. In my opinion, this plus the addition of battery preconditioning for fast charging is reason enough to wait a bit. It’s “cool” to have a first year model but as most experts will point out, not the best idea as adjustments are very often added the second year…The rear digital mirror is a good idea and I will get this option if possible. Interesting video!

Coming home from a snowboarding trip and on that day, the temps had rizen above freezing. It would take roughly 5-10 minutes of driving to gunk up the rear window to a point it was not a see through panel anymore. Any camera in the posterior would suffer the same fate (unless... it came with an effin wiper) so yes, here in the Nordics, this would be a deal breaker for me. Hell, I'd settle for dinky, stupid looking aftermarket pretty much duct taped to the spoiler if it did the trick...

Moreover, there is one more thing the Ioniq 5 lacks beside a rear wiper: only having a 120V plug on its onboard "granny" EVSE is inadequate. A NEMA 14-50 adapter is a necessity when visiting friends with dryer outlets, RV parks, marinas, etc. Will I buy an Ioniq 5 without those 2 improvements? Yes. But then I'll keep my Tesla UMC with a TeslaTap adapter and just grit my teeth when the rear window is filthy.

    It’s been fine during the summer. But in the rain and soon the grime of winter is absolutely a significant issue. I still love my car and I would buy it again even so - but the engineers who came up this hair-brained plan should be fired and never work in this field again. Even at the car wash - the soap doesn’t rinse off - have to manually wipe/rinse it off. It’s quite fun having to back into a tight charging spot with no visibility from the back window and also not the rear camera either because that also easily gets wet/dirty.

    Wish they could figure out how to put a nested wiper in the top back, under the spoiler. It would not be visible when not in use. I personally find rear wipers ugly, I have one that sticks out on my micra that is already rusting after five years, the salt has found it's way inside the mechanism and the rust is all around the seal.

      They have them for their other models such as the new Tucson. So it's not the matter of whether it can be done. I believe they just want to stick to their original design.

  • @metube9541

    It most definitely needs a rear wiper. Any rain or road spray instantly makes the rear view next to useless.
    The rear camera is also useless when there is road spray.
    Rain X makes the rain bead and run off a little better but the rear spoiler and air flow dynamics do not work.
    Is it a deal breaker, probably yes.

    The vehicle is one of the most passionate and intriguing EV's today, and I believe it will be for many years. Even the no-wiper concept and approach is amazing...but only in a concept unfortunately. Perhaps it works well on the KIA EV6, due to the slope. I even told my friend who owns one, that the Ionic 5 community will plead for that little rear wiper in no time.

    • @ApplesnCastles

      I have an Ioniq5 Project 45 here in the UK - the wiper would in my view, be a subtle enhancement (albeit at the risk of making the rear look less tidy) - no doubt of that in my view, the rear screen does get dirty and covered in dust and accumulated rain marks - but its' never bad enough to obscure vision through it. Snow (& similar) on the other hand would be far worse & it may be best removing snow & ice from the rear glass by hand rather than using the wiper as it may not (depending on the weight of the snow) be ideal to allow the wiper to clear it for you...I think the FDM (full display mirror - digital rear view mirror basically) was a better solution overall (though it's been dropped now from the UK at least) than the rear wiper. The rear wiper is far more useful in the Winter months but all this this just my 2cents / tuppence :)

      The rear trunk or deck sucks air down to clean the rear glass on sedans. This hatchback should have one IMO.

    I think the spoiler section should be designed as wing profile and the rear edge of spoiler should be sharp and spolers direction turned more parallel to the rear glass. This issue needs tests.

    Rear wiper issue is annoying, but can there's a button to turn on the rear parking camera as you drive, which acts as a very credible virtual rear view mirror, so in practice it's a bit of a non issue.

      @ApplesnCastles 2 года назад

      @@tusdardcart I’ll check again when I get home but I’m certain of it now as Hyundai UK are dropping the FDM full display mirror (digital rear view mirror) from the Namsan - so I wonder why they’re doing that? Also noted present on pre-production N model too - so I think you can expect to see it soon…. I think I’d prefer the fdm because the wiper makes the rear hatch look untidy - they’re placing it Olay the bottom - not hiding within the spoiler from what I can deduce…

    • @ApplesnCastles
      @ApplesnCastles 2 года назад

      Sorry for the delay - they've removed all traces of that "Rear Wiper" in the 08/2022 edition- I promise it was there & I'm fuming I haven't kept their last version where it was detailed. Additionally, they've also removed *almost* all traces of "FDM" too - my dealer called me (on my Namsan order - the 1st AWD order in the UK mine is apparently) to tell me that Hyundai UK are dropping the FDM / Full Display Mirror from the UK spec & reducing the price by £250 (big deal & I'm unhappy about that but understand why - given the ghostly disappearance of the rear wiper!)... however, they've accidentally left one sentence still in there about FDM under DSM in the current iteration of their UK brochure: "The DSM (Digital Side Mirror) systems will feature as standard on the Namsan Edition and utilises two side mounted, low profile high definition cameras in the traditional side mirror locations, as well as two interior, door card mounted screens. This high-tech feature will be available in Europe for the first time in a Hyundai Motor Group vehicle. The DSM reduce air resistance and provide IONIQ 5 customers with an enhanced rear view, even in bad weather. FDM comes as standard on Premium Trim and above, DSM comes as standard on Namsan Edition only.".
      SO ... I personally guess that:
      1) They'll remove that comment (as they did for Rear wiper - probably after reading my posts) as well when they read this!
      2) That the euro model WILL have a rear-wiper - which is why they dropped FDM.
      The Rear-wiper looks untidy where they're seemingly having to place it & I think that could be because the N trim spoiler probably couldn't accommodate it within the N rear spoiler (different to the usual Ioniq 5 spoiler) which would make production costs even more expensive.
      I'd switch car to the N if it was "orderable"; on the N model, cooled seats probably won't be available (as they'll fit bucket heated-only type ones) nor the fixed glass sunroof either (like Kia does in the EV6) - although I dint know what - I guess it wouldn't be a Namsan - so that's why! The EV6 (non-GT) has an opening sunroof.
      I'm very disappointed in the quality of information for people like me who're ordering their next vehicle almost blind. My P45 wasn't new to me when I got it (for various reasons) so I wanted my own from new - hence the NS order.

      I agree, I’m in my i5 now & the rear screen happens to be dirty but I can almost always - if not always, see through it just fine - genuinely, having owned (a project 45) - I wasn’t 100% happy pre-ownership but I’m genuinely not bothered about the inclusion of a rear wiper (in the Namsan edition I have on order; yes, it’s stated in the specifications in the brochure here in the UK) but each to their own - I’d like rear sun blinds in the rear that I have now in the P45 - I’m pretty sure Hyundai have dropped them on the Namsan - I quite like having the windows rolled down for ventilation whilst charging whilst the sun visors are up - which provides shade and some privacy. Doubt many would agree with my feelings on that - they may say they’re not used much (same too with the rear electric seats!).

  • @inselberg123

    I have seen enough Ioniq5's with obscured dirty rear windows and hatches to realize that they, like my Kona Electric, have poor aerodynamics at the back. For obvious safety reasons, the Ioniq5 needs a rear window washer/wiper.
    My Hyundai Kona Electric has a rear window washer/wiper; without that, it would be like driving without rear window visibility much of the time!
    Please give it a think Hyundai, driving along busy highways and sideroads in wet conditions, there's potentially a great deal of grime and dirt hitting the front windshield, enveloping the entire vehicle. Thankfully you have installed front window washer/wipers. Please don't ignore the importance of rear window visibility for the otherwise amazing Ioniq5.

    Unfortunately EV’S will still be very expensive in the near future . It seems that car companies want us to invest beyond our expections in vehs . My last veh in canada cost $ 45,000 it was a mitsubushi phev . Now Hyundai comes out with an EV that mid trim will cost $ 65,000 and for that amount there is no rear wiper included . Shake you head Hyundai, Nissan EV has a rear wiper so does the Mach E .
