So great to see 5th Gear at good work again. Much love to Vicky as I miss her work. Rory is a great addition to the team. Great to see this. I saw an IONIQ 5 in the wild today for the first time. Brilliant video with two of my favorite, modern auto journalists that have taken up the challenge. good for you guys. Really appreciate this.
I have a PHEV and when in and around town, I only use the EV mode. And since buying the car my driving habits have changed enormously. Always lift completely off on downhills. Always pull away gently. Lift of on flats and only dab the accelerator to keep the momentum up. And generally never over do the speed. The benefit of this is two-fold: get the maximum out of the battery range; but also, less stress and road rage.
We will have had our 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric for 5 years this coming May. Having frequently driven much longer road trips here in western Canada (BC and adjacent Alberta), our approach is to always charge opportunistically. Rather than pushing on to a more distant charging station (even if we can), we stop more frequently to "top up" to 80%. This means more frequent, but shorter charging stops; and it lowers the odds of being held up if a "must charge" station is either busy or faulty. Love that North Coast 500 road.
I don't disagree that cheaper EVs should be an option. But the average cost of SUVs solds in the UK is 38k and the Ioniq 5 starts at 42k and at 45k for the bigger battery. The 4k price difference will almost certainly pay itself back over the lifetime of the vehicle, due to cheaper running and maintenance costs. I see the big challenge for EV pricing, being affordable compact cars. But when it comes to bigger cars I would say they're pretty comparable in TCO already and will probably out compete them in a few years.
You can already get a good amount of e vehicles from the used market for a few thousand so everyone can get into it already. Recently bought a used Renault Zoe for around 6000€. Not a ioniq 5 of course, but a good value for the price

Very wise, I have had an electric car for over 6 years now. Only use it locally on the home charger umbilical cord. If I want to go long distance, I get the diesel out. I learned my lesson with the abysmal unreliable, small in number and under maintained infrastructure, which is only getting worse, not better because the number of electric vehicles is growing rapidly now and the build out of charging infrastructure is falling further and further behind the increasing demand.
Vicki visibly paid for one of the chargers (pressed her VISA against the touchscreen.) Free chargers generally have a lower (and longer) charge capacitor - great if you're not in a hurry. Somebody, somewhere, somehow pays for the juice to charge - that's where it gets sticky

Well not really any different from driving enthusiastic in a fossil car. Everyday driving you can drive how you like, but for a long road trip a laid back approach will make it a bit longer between stops
As soon as you drive any car like you stole it the range drops off dramatically. The point is though that in everyday use and without a mildly manufactured and slightly fake bit of range anxiety a car with 200 plus miles of range is a very practical and worry free option for 99% of drivers. Just as well really because the petrol will not last forever ...
@@michaelgoode9555 I get that, but even when I'm just driving normally I don't do this EV ritual of super OCD hyper miling, which is what they seem to be doing to achieve the range. I think I would just have to drive it normally for a few weeks/months and figure out what my actual range is for me.
I think he rather walked than them letting him go. He alluded to it in an interview. As a trained auto Journo he should have gotten the main show gig after Le blanc left but the Beeb decided to bring in popular tv personalities which was a piss take to his qualifications and experience. I don't blame for sticking up for himself and saying up yours.
Imagine if petrol stations were over 100 miles between, only had one pump, could be out of service, took 20 minutes at least to fill.... and some geezer was trying to tell you this was the Future and convenient 🙄 😒 🤔
@@Azureecosse in EVs heated seats and steering wheel actually serve a purpose, they use less energy than using the heating system, so unless you need demisting then you have less of an impact on the range.
@@Azureecosse it takes less energy to heat the seat and steering wheel for the driver than heat the whole cabin. If more than one person in car then it's less of a benefit.
This will be the final era that such EV voyages will be fun. From here on, it will be about fighting with fellow motorists over who gets to sit for 20-60 minutes holding up the queue. I'm happy to be packing a "lifeboat" in the form of a 2cyl Range Extender in an i3 REx. Sure enough, charge up when chargers are not broken, vandalized, occupied or in an unsafe spot. However, if there's any issue, it takes me only 90 seconds to fill the tank and get on with life. Why are PHEVs and Range Extenders being ignored? ...There's a built-in incentive to use electricity (here in the Seattle USA area, per-mile running on petrol is 4x electricity)
I love the adjustable regen on regular Ioniq. It was a stroke of genius to put that on steering wheel instead of a menu somewhere. It makes driving engaging. Different to driving hard but engaging nonetheless.
If I scrapped my Peugeot 4007 to go EV it would take twelve years to break even on my carbon footprint and annual mileage of less than two thousand miles.
Vicky, you definitely need to reprogram your right foot. The sport of driving EVs on a long distance trip is efficiency. Frankly it should be the sport for everyone, every day. My average last year in our BMW i4 eDrive40 is 4.6 miles/kWh!
Kudos to your bravery! Thanks for the practical and realistic test drive. It has given me a good idea on how far the car will go before running out of juice :)
Great video, outstanding views. One funny thing is that we have 4 drivers at home and me and my younger boy spend 20% to 25% less fuel than my wife and my older boy: and we both drive much faster than they!
You know.. its like driving on highway with consistent speed and driving in town with slow traffic.. The different with fuel consumption is really obvious.. it more save when you drive on highway compare in town..(with consistent speed i means)🙂 What you drive is not important, who is drive is important😎😂
Amazing that in this day and age we're asking questions like this. Can it do 500 miles on one of the most well known charging routes in the country? I should bloomin well hope so since even early Nissan Leafs could. Oh and pretty much anything with an ice in it for the last 80 years or so... My point is the cars are all capable now. Even the 30-odd kWh ones are usable for the odd road trip if you can put up with waiting a while for not a lot more range. The problem hasn't been the cars for years - the infrastructure is a joke. Every single garage should have as many rapids as fuel pumps as a minimum. Then watch as it suddenly becomes really easy to do long runs in pretty much any ev - with only the time spent being different between them. Throw a dart into a map at the moment and even in some of the best ev's you're not guaranteed to be able to get there and there are a lot of places where its very inconvenient. Can't blame the cars for that.
btw, stuff like lights and wipers have a negligible effect on the range. rain might, going uphill(specially if u don't come back down in the same charge) definitely will. also, charging to 95% isn't really a thing most EV drivers do unless its a last resort.
@@TeddieBean the 12v is being charged by the traction battery when the car is on. Pretty much constantly from what I've seen. It's just a very small load.
We have a Tesla Model 3 and a 2001 Boxster S (we’ve had from new) and I think we’ve decided to get the Ioniq5 based on this review. We know Vicki is a real deal driver and if she enjoys it then it’s good - period. And we love the design and space. Thought of buying a Porsche 992 but I think it’s too late for ICE cars now…and the range in the Taycan is too short. The Hyundai is much more about taking your time than hauling ass through corners, but that has its own pleasures. Time for a change.
I love the Ioniq5 and took one for a test drive recently, fantastic car - spacious interior, good ride and fun to drive. Will be doing the NC500 in one if I get one!
@@cannyscott definitely not... Rory is cool anol but Vicky has ALWAYS been my dream girl since I was in High School. You should see her in the earlier seasons of Fifth Gear back in 2003/2004 😍😍😍
What people don’t understand is that when more ev’s are on the road you will be wasting more time looking for charging points and waiting in line so will take more time getting anywhere
A gopro fixed to the steering column pointed at the dash with a small screen-in-screen throughout and a free GPS trace download would have done a lot to allay range scepticism. Instead of that we just get talk about range and a couple of charging shots, which frankly could be absolute cobblers given the magic of TV editing.
Disagree with their 19 chargers comment. I’ve counted more than 30 rapid and more than 100 fast chargers. Not to mention, if you really got stuck (incompetent) any 3 pin plug will give you more range if your patient. How many petrol stations are up there?
Does that exclude all the chargers that have restrictions (Tesla chargers, hotels/shops that require your custom, car dealerships etc.) and that are served by accessible public networks? I am all in for EVs but this whole fragmentation thing is an issue that still needs to be solved. Also remember, a 500 mile journey can be done on one tank by most cars that are similarly sized or bigger than a Golf.
@@pangolin83 lol, car dealerships in that part of the Highlands! You absolutely haven’t been there. Most are Charge Place Scotland. That Gridserve unit is the only one up there. So accessible to all.
@@jameshblack what, the North of Scotland? There are like 5 people live there and hundreds of chargers not to mention the people who do live there usually gave private parking so can have home chargers. For tourists, Scotland has plenty of chargers. More than anywhere else in the U.K. with the possible exception of London….. You clearly ether don’t have an EV or have never been to the North of Scotland or both!
Doesn't the sat nav take the terrain into account when estimating the mileage left? I know the Tesla does (and pretty sure other EVs do) so if it's hilly it will reduce the estimated miles when inputting a destination.
I did the 500 and it's spectacular it really is but my wife and I did it in a rigged out estate if you've never driven a campervan it's tricky if you get good weather it's a dream bad and it's a nightmare some of the stops are shite especially the ones with English in charge do your research and don't Rush take your time Ullapool spend some time there
Nice review. Would have loved if you did a back-to-back trip with you & Vicki in the IcONIC 5 then the other team in the IcONIC 5 petrol/diesel equivalent. Dame trip, same day, same conditions.
Geoff Buys Cars RUclips channel just did a similar jog to le trip in a diesel and a Porsche EV. Two videos and they're a real eye opening surprise. Watch them
I love EV's but try that journey in the height of summer and see how many spaces there are at the chargers, I have done the NC500 several times at different times of the year in both my Motorhome and Impreza and never seen the roads that quiet.
This is why I always gravitate towards Fifth Gear compared to Top Gear (when it was at its peak in popularity). Fifth Gear has the perfect balance between fun, and informative. The last few Top Gear seasons with Jeremy Clarkson and the boys became way too theatrical and information in their test/reviews became heavily diminished.
VBH is right. What’s the point of doing 500 on great roads and spending your time faffing with calculators and “hypermiling”. Sucks all the fun out. Might as well take the bus. Great film as ever, but didn’t sell me on it being a grand tourer.
Taking into account the initial cost of the vehicle, the depreciation, the cost of charging(which was surprisingly high)... I'll stick to my 10 year old Merc diesel, which would have done the 500 miles on less than one full tank without any range anxiety.
Yes those things unfortunately put me off too. It's nice to think you are saving the planet by buying these electric cars but but people can only afford what they can afford. For me it's a bicycle lol. ( 12 years without a second car and doesnt get any cheaper or greener). Not pleasant in the winter though. I could do the 500 mile trip on it though given enough time.
@@FlyingFun. In the UK the additional negative is the carbon footprint you make when charging the car. The electricity generated has a dirty footprint which varies dependent on which part of the country you charge it in. Oxfordshire for example is awful. So the 'green' aspect isn't always clear cut.
@@stevewilliams5428 yep, throw in the manufacturing and sourcing for the batteries and that impact and it's very iffy the whole green thing. I love my ebike and my normal bikes but transferring the small battery production and power requirements over to a car en mass is not really gonna work.
I’d test drive Ionic 5 tomorrow & probably order mine except for a deal breaker: no rear windshield wiper. Best vision is my absolute must & I’m crushed, not to mention stunned, that Hyundai chose to omit this.
Not so sure that a rear camera is a complete answer… if it’s mounted inside the car, it’ll be affected by the wet/mucky rear screen and if mounted externally, the lens will get covered in crud and water droplets in bad weather. I test-drove one last autumn and loved it - but the lack of rear wiper and sun-roof options (in the UK) are a bit odd in a car that is otherwise so well equipped and thought out.

@@michaelgoode9555 My point exactly ✌🏼
Loved it!!! More videos with RR and Vicki
please
Great vid , but the only thing I took away from it was ‘specy tac tac’. Couldn’t get past it lol
That hurt to hear.😂
Excellent video and great personalities, informative and entertaining, thank you both!
Vicky is a real petrol head! 😂
You need to coast more and ofcoures regen more than using the brakes....
Well done Hyundai. Since you have made the Genesis GV60 even better than the Ioniq5, guess I will wait for the GV90.
Game over for Tesla!
Great to see Rory again, never understood why Top Gear let him go. Great weather........
Great review............Good to see Rory onboard with Vicky..........lovely journey.........brilliant car...if only it was 30K :)
heating steering wheels are the best on a wintery day start! Great review.
Great team, great review, great footage and editing! There are many stretches of roads up in Scotland so hopefully see you back for some more!
Wrong other way around. The 100kw plus fast chargers barely exist and many more will be installed. Soo lots still to improve.
And never break even financially, very wise !
@@stevezodiac491yep 2000 miles a year, I’d stick with taxis and lifts, not worth the insurance, tax and MOT costs
Really nice test drive in this beautiful Scotland road. Lovely view.
Would love to see a more recent highlands road trip. Mainly to see how the infrastructure has improved
Yes but remember they have missed a load of chargers on the trip across the top
Great video. Is it just me or does VBH not age at all. I’ve always loved her cheeky style in what’s still a man’s world.
Great video, outstanding views. One funny thing is that we have 4 drivers at home and me and my younger boy spend 20% to 25% less fuel than my wife and my older boy: and we both drive much faster than they!
You know.. its like driving on highway with consistent speed and driving in town with slow traffic..
The different with fuel consumption is really obvious..
it more save when you drive on highway compare in town..(with consistent speed i means)🙂
What you drive is not important, who is drive is important😎😂
weight? ;-)
All I can say is the way I drive I’d be at charging stations constantly. 🤦🏻♂️. My wife, on the other hand is a natural hyper miler. 🤪
Pretty sure headlights are run from the 12v battery, same as heated seats, sat nav, radio & central locking.
What a great vid!!! And... I didn't know you were a presenter on Fifth Gear, Rory!!! ... Great to see you as well as on Auto trader!!👍🙂
This was a delight.... do the same trip with KIA EV6
Vicky and Rory are awesome.
btw, stuff like lights and wipers have a negligible effect on the range. rain might, going uphill(specially if u don't come back down in the same charge) definitely will. also, charging to 95% isn't really a thing most EV drivers do unless its a last resort.
they usually come off the 12v batt anyway 🤷🏻♂️ I don't know what that whole section was about! just daft
@@TeddieBean the 12v is being charged by the traction battery when the car is on. Pretty much constantly from what I've seen. It's just a very small load.
Absolutely sensational content!!! You two are absolutely awesome!!!
PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!! Do more car reviews together, there's so much chemistry between you, like a Married Couple Lol
Rory is SO lucky to be working with a LEGEND like VBH 😍
Or vice versa?!?!
These two are really good together as presenters
Am I mistaken, or did you and Vicky actually do this in a Niro electric a few years ago?
A gopro fixed to the steering column pointed at the dash with a small screen-in-screen throughout and a free GPS trace download would have done a lot to allay range scepticism. Instead of that we just get talk about range and a couple of charging shots, which frankly could be absolute cobblers given the magic of TV editing.
Vicky's always been charming and relaxed, not overly chatty, I like her style
I just love that rory is now here. Awesome
The charging station in the north is poor at best needs big investment and more chargers
Just completed it in a BMW I3. Great trip.
Use cruise control. I regularly achieve 5.1 miles Kwphr in my e-Golf
Doesn't the sat nav take the terrain into account when estimating the mileage left? I know the Tesla does (and pretty sure other EVs do) so if it's hilly it will reduce the estimated miles when inputting a destination.
it's not clear if they've put in the destination on the navigation system .. they might not use the on-board navigation at all ..
It was an excellent test, but one making a trip that would require a sleep stop would charge the battery during that period.
The scenery is amazing but you only get to see it one week every 2 years. Is hypermiling just driving slow?
Watch them
@@alasdairfinlayson Thanks mate. Will surely check it out
Back when TG was more popular, the road trip segment was my least favourite part. I surprisingly really like this clip. Thanks!
I love EV's but try that journey in the height of summer and see how many spaces there are at the chargers, I have done the NC500 several times at different times of the year in both my Motorhome and Impreza and never seen the roads that quiet.
500 miles in a car with a 300 odd mile range? That's one charge.
You sound like you're a hoot at a party.
@@nvtschip ....Uhh, wow, you deduced that based on a few sentences I wrote about a car show.....?
All well and good if you’re lucky and have a working charger without anyone else charging. I’ll keep with a PHEV for a while at least. Good video.
VBH is right. What’s the point of doing 500 on great roads and spending your time faffing with calculators and “hypermiling”. Sucks all the fun out. Might as well take the bus. Great film as ever, but didn’t sell me on it being a grand tourer.
Great to see the figures, really helpful including the cost to charge
When they charged for £12, and said it would be £20 in a petrol car..... the Ionic is the double the price of a Golf !
Just use the adaptive cruise control whenever you can and it'll be a lot more efficient.
@@FlyingFun. "it's nice to think you are saving the planet"....🤣🤣🤣🤦♂️you idi-ot🤣🤣
I’d test drive Ionic 5 tomorrow & probably order mine except for a deal breaker: no rear windshield wiper. Best vision is my absolute must & I’m crushed, not to mention stunned, that Hyundai chose to omit this.
New models one got Cam added so you can See behind you
Never seem worry about it on there trip
my GF has a 2017 Ioniq hybrid, that also has no rear wiper. It also has a foot operated parking brake!!!
