I like the design of this EV. It looks fresh and futuristic. Especially pixels lights
But does it run. Who cares about lights.
The Ioniq 5 was designed by Donckerwolke who has in impressive CV of models that includes the Lamborghini Murcielago and Gallardo.
That is why the design of the Ioniq 5 stands out. yes I have an Ioniq 5. it is fantastic!

I think it's like a giant hatchback from the 80's trying to look futuristic. The design is an incoherent mess of smooth and sharp lines. Like the Frankenstein of cars. I absolutely hated it the day I saw it, and still do😂
It's really cute, funky, and a mixture of futuristic and retro. Such a unique looking EV!
Agreed on that
its a boring bullshit that will look weird in 10 years from now.
It's unique but at the same time it's an intimate German person with three fingers
It’s dorky as hell though. I showed this to all of my classes of college seniors and they all said you drive this if you want to remain single. Everyone on them agreed. 😂
Good luck with all the Lexus evs that were sold are being buy back status 🤣 recalling was Lexus’ dream 🤣
I gotta disagree that Hyundais change in reputation started with this, in the last 20 years theyve brought on Peter Schreyer, ex head of design at Audi, and Albert Biermann from BMW M division to head the Hyundai N performance division, and for the last few years theyve made some of the best cheap performance cars in the Veloster N and now the Elantra N, along with some of the best bang for your buck luxury cars ever made with Genesis. I agree with basically everything you said about this car, its great, but its definitely not the thing that made Hyundai great out of the blue, they've been building towards this for years now.
Agree 100%. Hyundai does deserve some credit for their climb to this point, but this was indeed a widely accepted vault to near the top of its class while a lot of people still don't like Hyundai gas cars for some reason.
@@ChristianRunsNY reliability, basically anyone can build an electric car though
Down in Latin America they have earned a great reputation in the last 15 years as they have good quality-price ratio and repairing one is affordable. Plus it isn't a pain in the ass like many other brands where the pieces and repair shops are a dealership monopoly
@@ChristianRunsNY Hyundai (and sister Kia) ICE cars are highly regarded in Europe, across the range. Genesis however with the high-end stuff, will never be taken as seriously as it should be. Above a certain price point, European buyers are stubbornly brand sensitive - Mercedes/BMW/Audi/Range Rover RULE the mid-to-high end, no matter how much bang for buck, or qualitatively better a Genesis may be.
SK are simply following the pattern so perfectly executed by Japan, 50 - 60 years ago. Deliver high quality and feature set at the right price...
The "Hyundai is cheap crap cars" reputation died a long while ago imo. I think they've been great since around the time of the last Sonata redesign honestly.
Hyundai's been steadily increasing their reputation these past few years anyway, i wouldn't say it's as meh as you make it to be. Their i30 N, for example, is fantastic.
Noticed that too lately. Their N line of vehicles is dope, good designs & looks, performance, price
Those feel like a cooler, more modern version of the Hyundai I knew 5 years ago
yeah and the Genesis line is absolutely absurd for the price

While having a great in-car map would be fantastic, I think that Google and Apple Maps need to prepare for EVs. If they are not easy to use with the type of vehicle that is going to take an exponentially larger share of the market, then they are going to be left behind. (I don't think they will be left behind, I think they will adapt eventually, but it should be sooner than later)
Google is, and I'm sure Apple is too given all the talk about the car teams we've been hearing about. Ford will be replacing their native UI with Android Auto soon.
Issue here is that the phone based apps don't integrate with the car, they are essentially just running remote screen from your phone on your car's display. So they don't know about the car state of charge or what its capabilities are. Ideal situation would be that the CarPlay and Android Auto from the phone could tap into some API's that the car exposes to enable the range and charger mapping situation.
@@curtisbme Have you seen the next generation apple carplay that was unveiled recently? It basically does that. Takes control of everything in the car
Apple Maps has some sort of EV tie in for the Mach E, but as far as I can tell, only for the Mach E. Not sure why, but hopefully that will change in the near future.
@@curtisbme absolutely. Standardizing a way for the phone to gather all the data it needs from cars is what is needed. Hopefully they can find a way to do it. Granted, I don't expect Apple and Google to collaborate on anything so the best case scenario we can hope for is two disparate standards for the two different platforms.
I'd at least love software that allows data communication between eachother seemlessly. This way, even if apple and android auto are the so great, third parties could have something to contribute or compete with them.
Hyundai has been making an EV for a long time, the IONIQ. They were some of the first legacy automakers to have a really good EV with the IONIQ (not IONIQ 5)
You're right, but the Ionic wasn't a really great car... Charging and acceleration were really slow and the design was really outdated. But yeah, if was an early electric car.
All true. But it is worth mentioning that Ioniq was just an electrified version of ICE/hybrid models. Ioniq 5 was the first one build on an EV platform from scratch. I see a loooot of them on the streets last couple of months and it’s always a joy to look at.
@@GhostLetsHack Really slow? 0-100km/h in 7,9s isn't slow at all if you ask me. You need a reasonable fast ICE to do it quicker.
@@hermanstokbrood Wow, it was that quick? I didn't know that. I test drove an Ionic 2018 and it felt really slow
@@hermanstokbrood ehh that’s still on the slower side for an EV

They really are and I am definitely going with an electric car from them in the next two years. Just waiting for the charging network to catch up.

So is Kia. Their new designs, both ICE and electric are beautiful

As a Veloster N owner, I approve of this comment
Glad you got to try it and enjoyed it! Don't forget, though, Hyundai has been quietly dipping their toes in electrified and electric cars for a few years now, kind of an alpha test before the full pure electric-only Ioniq 5 (and 6 and 7 etc.). I owned the immediate precursor to this, the Ioniq Electric (there was also the Ioniq Hybrid which is more common in the US, as well as the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid), and it was also really well-made, though certainly a previous generation (or "alpha version") electric car. There was also the Kona electric, so Hyundai certainly had a few models to practice with.
Don't forget their Kia cars like the soul ev, and the niro
The Kona Electric has been great, but using the Bluelink app for remote lock or climate control is downright terrible. Sluggish, buggy, and slow to respond. I really hope they step up their game in that regard.
@@JayLew91 Thanks, I didn't forget them, I just didn't want to get too detailed hehe but thanks for mentioning them. ;-)
@@PlaneAwesome I hope so too. Myself, I used the Korean BlueLink app, and it was flawless. Hope they work out the kinks in other countries' versions too. What was a bit frustrating was that because Google Maps has been limited for so many years in Korea (yes even South Korea because of local laws), Android Auto doesn't use it for its navigation, instead turning to kakaonavi. I ended up using a mix of the car's native maps, Google Maps on my phone, and local Korean map apps to get around, depending on the situation.
I worked as a research analyst in the EV space for a couple of years, this and the EV6 by kia are both going to be EXTREMELY successful, and hyundia-kia's future EV projects as well. They know what's up
I bought this exact model in April. Driving has changed for me and I absolutely love this car. I use navigation and for me it's honestly fine. The self driving capabilities need some updates for non highway use. But it's an absolute unit of a car and I am still in love with it. :)

8:05 I think this assessment of Hyundai in the last 3-5 years is from someone that doesn't particularly stay in tune with the automotive space. Hyundai has been gaining market share and overall positive brand awareness for really the last 5-7 years but especially within the last 3 years. Their talent acquisition and products have been on the rise for many years now and it has shown in sales. The Ioniq 5 was just one of the more recent accomplishments but the Ioniq 5 was not the sole reason for a change in Hyundai.
Hyundai cannot scale up quick enough to get a meaningful market share. While BYD and Tesla are poised to crank out 5M-10M cars a year, Hyundai will be lucky to reach a capacity of 100K a year. They do not have the lithium contracts even to cover the battery cost. Tesla and BYD both place orders of $100BN a year for their batteries. I bet Hyundai is still at $20MN a year. I do not think Hyundai installed capacity will approach of 1% of overall EV volume. Good car, but not a serious EV contender - by their own estimates.
you have to AVOID LG battery.
They've also been selling EVs for years, sounds like he thinks this is their first EV.
Came here to say this. He's clearly someone that's comfortably within the Tesla reality-distortion-field (and there's nothing wrong with that) and has practically zero perception of the "real world" as it pertains to cars. Hyundai/Kia/Genesis have been killing it for over a decade now. They've had very competitive vehicles in almost every category in which they compete, cutting edge styling (whether an individual likes it, or not, is subjective), top-tier tech (for the respective category/price class)... etc, etc, etc.
This isn't even their first competitive EV (although it is their first widely available, "high volume" model).
@@veerkar Its not trying to be solely an electric car company like Tesla tho, their recent N performance cars have been fantastic, Hyundai i30N & the i20N have been pretty successful in the sports industry.

outside of the US bubble, for the past 10 years, since the huge shift in design, hyundai is the "best value" choice in segments like golf (i30) and small cross over (kona). that has carried over to electric and the 5 looks amazing
Agree, Hyundai are the top selling brand in Israel for the past five years. We don't have a car industry so we don't choose "local" brands as they do in the US, Germany, France and Japan. People simply buy the best value cars.
I was giong to mention. Hyundai seems to really press the "bang for the buck" button on a lot of their models. The Kona Ultimate, which I have, for that price has a lot of features and amenities found in cars commanding substantially higher price tags. I really love my Hyundai.
On the topic of Hyundai's reputation, there's the Hyundai Veloster N which is basically a sporty hot hatch that got a lot of people in the car tuning world thinking "dang, hyundai can make a sick performance car."

There’s not a dull moment when driving my Veloster N. It makes the right power, the right sounds, and is super capable on the track.

I went to the LA Auto Show a week or so ago and got to ride around in this inside. To me, this is a modern interpretation of what someone from 1986 might've thought an electric car would look like. I love it's stylish. It's very large inside and it's a very practical size.

Hyundai also usually has a lot of tech for their price point. I got a Sonata Hybrid and love all the features it has

I have a non hybrid Sonata. And I chose it after test driving all the competitors. Accord, Camry, Altima, Passat, Acura ILX, Malibu and Mazda 6. Initially, Hyundai wasn't even an option for me. I decided to test drive just because a showroom was across the street from the Mazda dealership I was visiting. I am so glad that I took a test drive in a 2021 Sonata.
I love the design and tech. Hyundai is not the same company as it was just a few years ago. It is as good as major Asian and some European manufacturers, if not better than a few of them.

Small compared to a Suburban or Tahoe, but not for a typical crossover.
The two things we need for EVs to finally reach mainstream acceptance are sub-$30k vehicles and doubling the number of charging stations available (and make sure they all work)

I have this car and absolutely love it!!! You hit the nail on the head with this one, I definitely won’t ever switch back to a gas combustion car
Marques, the car actually can only theoretically charge at a 240kW rate. It has an 800V battery structure with up to 300 Amps. It can use a 350kW EVSE, which will give it the maximum charge rate.
Came here to find that comment.
In google maps you can add what type of electric plugs your vehicle accepts and when you search for charge stations it’ll show just then the compatible stations. So from there just plan for stops just like any other car.
What gets me about the electrics is... they call it a $40,000 car, but you'd be hard pressed to buy it for less than $55,000, there always seems to be a $15,000 premium on all electrics. So in honest advertising, I'd call this a $55,000 car.
It doesn’t charge up to 350 kW though, it’s about 225kW when maxing out. Still 18minutes 15-80%SoC when correct conditions. I have one ;)
Very smooth transition at the beginning 😍
If you do that again you should have the car go over bumps and track the graphics over the headlights so it's more impressive🚗

Just say no to GM.
Aww, so brutal. My hybrid Volt is a marvel of engineering and really turned me around on my opinion of GM (that said, the Bolt seems pretty boring compared to the competition)
Everyone bashing the Bolt: do you own one? I’ve met 3 who do and they all love their Bolts.
Stay away from this shit car is full of problems and it got low quallity materials.
Even Hyundai from 3-5 years ago was an amazing brand change nothing close to the old Hyundai with the shitboxes. It's not electric, but they launched their N division which constantly produces amazing cars with a great price when compared to other options. The i30N blew up in Europe, it's everywhere and SO GOOD!
Now with the new IONIQ (the made them before, this isn't their first EV), they're changing massively to the better as well.
Hyundai is so underrated because of it's past shitboxes.
Really excited what Hyundai will become, the Vision 74 looks like the best concept I've ever seen. Also happy to see it's hydrogen and not only electric
Really great video! I love how you focus on the most important bits, and call out the things that work well & others that need fixed. Would really love to see you tackle the Chevy Bolt, as it's about the cheapest EV option right now, which I'm guessing comes with a lot of caveats.
I think the one can feature you did not mention here is 110 V outlets.
This is huge to me, I can charge or use any appliance normally, I could go camping and use an electric stove if I wanted to.
This is something that should just be standard in all electric vehicles and the only other vehicles that have this are the pickuptrucks so far,
Good on hyundai for including this.
I picked up a top spec Bolt EUV, less than $40k before trade, non-beta highway hands free driving included. It may not be AWD but I love it, great car for the money.
My main issue with the ioniq 5 was that they locked too many features to the highest trim level.
im glad you came around to the ioniq5, I don't own either however I have driven both and I prefer the ioniq5 over the model 3 or y in looks ,ride and style I still give charging infrastructure and quickness to Tesla but that's it , glad to see an unbiased review from someone who is not a Tesla fan boy, you may love Tesla but you can be fair to others great review
Extremely high quality video. Thanks for reviewing this car. Very Specific about “Starting MSRP” and never provide “Price as Tested.” If cost is so important, then transparency is 100% necessary. Thanks again. Cheers!
he did say base price was 39k and the one he tested was 45k
Ioniq is also not really affordable for the average person
I have one of these in the RWD format with the slick factory matte paint. Amazing range (~500km per charge for me), razor sharp design, unreal charging speed, and I'm 6'5" and the interior space and legroom is brilliant. I've used it on multiple long (1,000 km+) trips in the boonies and mountains of Canada with no regrets. Even did a comparison on a relatively long (900 km) trip and it saved me more than 60% of fuel costs while only adding approximately 40 minutes to my trip time. My only real complaint is that I wish the sound system was better. My other car is an older Lexus with a Mark Levinson and it smokes the IONIQ's sound system. Other than that, I've had it since December 2021 and it has been breaking necks everywhere I go since. Don't buy this car if you don't want to talk to people because people will come running over to talk to you about it.
What made you choose this over the similarly sized Tesla model Y?
are you me? I have the exact same car, in Canada. did 15K on it since we got it NYE.
@@vincentlee4903 Cost? I am guessing. An AWD Ionic 5 is a good 10k-12k cheaper than Model Y.
ok
@@vincentlee4903 a handful of reasons. Canada offers a rebate on this car, I received the car within a week of ordering, and I got it below MSRP. Plus, I previously owned a Kia and I liked it.
Hyundai and Kia have been killing in the last 5 years at least. Cars like the i30n, i20n and the stinger have been awesome drivers cars and widely praised by automotive journalists.
You need to know about these cars cause they have been making fun stuff for great prices. Just hasn't been on your radar cause they're not electric.
When I first saw your comment, I mixed up the two lines and read "Hyundai and Kia have been killing journalists in the last 5 years" and it really caught my attention.
@@GabrielFFontes hahaha 10/10 unintentional Clickbait
We got ours back in July and haven't been happier, you nailed the feeling of driving one, perfectly in this video. I highly recommend anyone looking into this or the EV6. As always, great video MKB. Keep up the great work!
I truly did want to purchase the Ionic-5, because I wanted something different and it fit into my budget. Hyundai may of made an amazing car, but the dealers are the reason I went with a Tesla. I visited 4 dealers and every single one of them was charging between 5-15K over MSRP via a dealer markup and making me purchase another 4k in dealer added accessories. This will forever make me never want to ever buy a Hyundai or any car for a dealer again. The first time buying experience they provided was terrible. I ended up purchasing a Long Range Model 3 because after adding up all the fees, the Tesla was going to be the same price and have a much better charging network.
I bought one of these and have been seriously impressed with it. Allegedly they are updating the UI to do State of Charging route planning.
Fascinating

As did Spock say when he sat on Ambassador Spock's chair.
Having driven model S for few months, I can say I enjoy driving ioniq 5 now. It's a pleasure car.
You like it better than the Model S?
It’s 2024 and I am buying the Hyundai Ionic 5 Limited this weekend. I’m old AF (70) and I have never been so excited to buy a car ! This will probably be the car my kids will have to force me to give up the keys for, one day. 🤣😂
I’ve been a Tesla fanboy ever since I knew the Model X existed. When the IONIC 5 came out I knew that Hyundai was serious about not only rebranding themselves, but changing their entire image to be WAY more premium. In my futures garage it’s a real possibility it’ll be a Tesla and a Hyundai/KIA/Geniss
The model X for me has such odd styling. Kinda looks like they just vertically stretched the model S
I reviewed one of these a few months ago, i must say i was impressed and they put a-lot of thought into the design with all of the pixel placement
Hyundai is now one of the most interesting? exciting? auto manufacturers nowadays. With this, the 6 and vision 74 they have really changed their image form only 5 years ago. The design of this car is so refreshing- not flashy, not like your pen vomited (old civic)- just nice to look at. Really taking leaps in car design while more fancy makers like BMW and Mercedes have token a design… divorce.
It's a pity that BMW and Mercedes are sticking to an old 'grill' design. Especially BMW. They are still making the kidney "grills" in the EV cars. Why does EV need a grill? They need to get rid of their old fashioned design language. Even though it's time to revolute and go foward, German brands are adhering to their legacy too much.
@@ilililili1i1il40 depending on the car design, there still might be a use for a front grill since the components are still cooled by a radiator, especially when you have the power transfer from the battery to the electric motor of a BMW or Mercedes.
@@callthatwhatyouwant pretty sure the grills arent open tho. Its just one obscenely huge ugly piece of black glass that hides sensors.
@@ilililili1i1il40 If only it were kidney grills and not those ugly beaver teeth...
@@callthatwhatyouwant I know the function of the grills. However, how about tesla & hyundai? Their grills are very small. On the other hand, BMW and Mercedes' grills are way to big. They are making it exactly same as the engine grills. It's time to change their design language.
My only negative about this car is that it doesn’t have a wiper on the back. I live in Canada and it is impossible to use a car without a back window wiper because of all the snow in the winter.
I agree with all the comments about your intro and how cool af it is! Great work. The little I've seen of this car does make me like the exterior styling a lot, though I'm not too thrilled about all those touch screens on the inside. I do prefer buttons and knobs whenever possible when I'm driving, mostly 'cuz I don't like to take my eyes off the road to find the screen area i need for something. Tactile buttons/knobs are much better for this IMO. Also, in the rare instance that your screen/s don't work, can you still drive this car? Unlikely to happen I know, but my user-centered design thinking makes me consider the limitations with these types of design/styling choices. Having said all that, I'd probably choose this over a Tesla any day.
totally agree about tactile buttons and knobs on car's, umm, entertainment center? (idk what is it called) are safer in my experience because it'll vastly reduce the amount of time you took yours eyes off the road. sure, it'll be way way safer if driver don't operate it when the car is moving, but come on lol.
Yea i really like the car except the slow display. I am now anticipating for ioniq6 instead.
Mazda's still sticking to rotary dial for the infotainment system and dials for climate control which is a win IMO.
Production quality is top notch as always, love the Z Flip 4 comparison.
That transition in the beginning was absolutely fire. 🔥
does anyone know what year Ioniq 5 Marques showcased? I think newer ones have some nice changes. Capacitive buttons are back, 2025 model is getting the rear wiper and software update
It's torture seeing this amazing car and being lightyears away of being able to afford something like it :( No matter how "inexpensive" they might be sold in the US, when they come to Europe, they are at a minimum of 2-3x that without taxes...
No, they are not. They are starting under 50k euro, and that is including VAT. Not that different from the starting price in the US, certainly not 2 to 3 times as expensive.
lol idk where in europe you live but i can get 72.6 kWh battery single engine can for under 45k€ with tax and i can even ask for subsidy from European funds 8k for ev (5k for plug in hybrid)
