Oh damn I thought I was on the AF channel until I saw this comment 😅

Yeah
I read that in your voice and tone!
On top of being a very cool car. Working for the company has been amazing honestly! They really know how to treat their employees well.
Be prepared to get laid off. Just look at the stock price chart...
Stock price has been fucked and they laid off a bunch of employees. Stay looking!
Rivian is a joke.
@@james7rr23 fair point I’m aware of the stock and the laying off. I’ll keep my eyes peeled and ears open. Appreciate the advice! Just hoping they stay in business first job where I feel like I matter.
I worked at rivian too. For 20 months and I know people are leaving in droves bc they are sick of the shitty management. Anyone good on the floor leaves bc everything they do is a pain in the ass. Same engineers they have had for 2 years+ and very little progress in “ramping” in my opinion. The stock is trash. The cars are fucking amazing but I still don’t see how they can make it without more people throwing money at them knowing good and well there is a high probability it will disappear. The leadership is a joke imo. Not that it takes away from the vehicle quality bc it doesn’t. I’ve driven both and had hands on building both at many levels. Quality is good but that doesn’t matter if you can make them affordable or make enough to sell. I hope they make it for sure but wouldn’t get too excited. If anything a company like Amazon should buy them out and fix the bull shit imo.
Agreed on all fronts! Had a lot of fun reviewing the R1S-considering moving to one from my truck. But I don't think I can-the R1T is just *so* perfect.
I might have to get one eventually if both you and marques are saying good things.
You could always have both 😉
Miss your presence on Twitter bud.
Your wife doesn't want the R1S?
I was there
I can't wait for them to produce a small crossover or sedan. I'm excited to see how Rivian develops.
I'd love a hatchback
The waveform podcast just had an episode where marques and the CEO of rivian talked about the r2 platform :)
Yeah I'm amazed every time at how big American cars are. They're like barns on the road!
afaik the next platform will be the same, just a size smaller. Still just SUV and truck.
I don't think they will make crossover, sedan or hatchback this decade.
a station wagon would be great
Rivian is absolutely killing it. Their ability to ship is great- I hope they can sell enough to start making the stripped down cheaper models that MB was referencing in the beginning.
Killing it? 😂😂😂
They've sold a tiny fraction of the EVs as Tesla. They have no supercharger network like Tesla. They have no Gigapress and Tesla has 3. They brick in Canada weather... won't start and won't let you in. They have no Dojo supercomputer like Tesla. Tesla has millions and millions of driven miles in their FSD computer. When the Cybertruck reaches full steam in January, Rivian is dead and buried... so yeah, "killed by it, not killing it" 🎉
@@yourlogicalnightmare1014why do you want one company to be the only one to succeed?? I genuinely don’t understand why people WANT Tesla to have a monopoly. Not to mention, while this lacks some of the “tech” Tesla has. It’s a lot more comfortable and luxurious. It’s closer to a Mercedes or Audi than a Tesla is.
@RiceCube Tech
I wouldn't have said anything if the comment was "I hope Rivian succeeds."
It's the claim that "Rivian is killing it" that is ridiculous. They dont have a single dealership within 250 miles of me. Tesla has 3 dealerships within 25 miles of me, as well as many superchargers near me.
Rivian MAY succeed eventually, but they have a loooong way to go before they can be described as "killing it"
@@yourlogicalnightmare1014 they could be “killing it” in many ways outside of having dealerships near you lmao. Killing it could refer to their design language. Which they are killing it. But he didn’t say anything about.
They could be killing it in their ability to ship a car, which is what the OG comment said. Which IS true.
He said nothing about how many dealerships or cars, stock price, FSD miles or whatever you said.
He said “they’re killing it” talked about ability to ship then said he wants a cheaper model.
Let’s look at Tesla. Their stock price plummeted. Elon is in some hot shit right now. A large portion of the country hates him (who used to love him) the cyber truck is almost half a decade or more behind schedule. And you’re still clinging on hope it’ll be out in January. Teslas far from killing it either. The only reason they have more sales is through bullshit hype marketing and the fact that they’re just a much older EV company.
@RiceCube Tech
I have zero interest in further debating your astounding ignorance.
Fisker Karma has "great design language" which is a meaningless statement as Fisker has proven.
Tesla has recently installed 3 gigapresses at their factories which will be pumping out Cybertrucks within 6 mo.
Their megapacks are going to be raking in billions of dollars, as will amny other things they have in the queue.
Your thumbsucking complaints are already well known and have been for years, and none of it changes the fact that Tesla is years ahead of the competition by every unit of measure.
If you weren't so whiny, you'd invest every penny you have in Tesla and 10x your money in the next 3 years. But go ahead and invest in Rivian and rely on hopes & prayers 😃👍
I feel like Rivian is quickly becoming an underrated company. Considering two R1T prototypes survived a 13,000-mile journey from Ushuaia, South America to Los Angeles, California, USA within 100 days, I'm excited as to how Rivian models will evolve in the future. I'm considering getting one as the first car not borrowed from/purchased by my parents.
The biggest issue, particularly in the southeast as well as more rural areas elsewhere, is the lack of chargers, especially superchargers, however, this is not a Rivian problem but an infrastructure problem, and applies to all EV users in that area.
Someone say trustafarian?
Hi
🤦♀️🤦♀️ u ignored one major fact about this company🤦♀️ It is technically owned by the saudi royal mafia. 🤢🤢🤮 If this is a Chinese company, you would have mentioned that from the beginning, right?! 😒
Sure, but only if you can buy a $90,000 car, which is not very many people.
“If I had 3 kids and needed to drop them to school, I’d pick this.”

@@victorterancas you don't >>need
@@victorterancas kids tend to have friends and teammates that tag along sometimes.
@@victorterancas Why do you need a car this big for anything, other than being an obnoxious Yank?
@@victorterancasyou can’t put small kids in the front. They need car seats. Small cars can’t fit 3 car seats across. Sure, it’s for a relatively “short” time of 4-5 years before they are in boosters and they’d fit. But that’s long enough for most people to want a 3rd row.
I'm shocked that we haven't seen Escalade/Suburban/Expedition EVs yet. Americans love them and I think it's a good fit for electric vehicles because people don't care if they're heavy and loaded with batteries. I think that's where EVs are going to naturally go towards, at least in the US.
Yeah the hummer EV is a great idea 🤭
Update Escalade ev is on the way
lot of people wouldn't be able to afford the eletric version because it's a lot more expensive
I do hope Rivian comes out with something lower to the ground eventually like a civic, just because I'd love to get one and I'm more comfortable low to the ground. Excited to see how the tech evolves over my lifetime.
Rivians have air suspension adjustable on the fly from under 8 inches to almost 15 inches clearance. On lowest setting it's quite low for a truck or suv. One of the reasons I like it as I feel the same as you. It's not going to be 5" like my GTI.. but it's also a 7000+ lb vehicle. Really wish I could drive one though, as I await my order.
Agreed, suvs are stupid and unnecessary for most people.
A station vagon would actually be very neat in this suv world.
Agreed. Really tired of these huge lifted cars. If I’m buying a car, I want a bog standard, low to the ground, regular car so I can get stuff done
If only they made Estate (Station wagon) rather than wasting everyone's time and road space with SUVs and pickups.
I love my R1S. It's probably the most fun and capable vehicle I've ever owned. I used to be a die-hard Xterra Off Road fan and always wished I could have an electric variant of it. That's what my R1S is for me.
haha yeah of course ya did fella
why would you want electric ? more expensive and worse polution
You went from a Nissan to a $100k plus Rivian?!
@@DrKevron He probably owned his Xterra for a very long time. They've been discontinued for many years

I absolutely love the Auto focus series. Thanks for the great video. Absolutely love it. Keep up the great work ❤
Darn everytime I see a car review video, the amount of production values and tiny details from scripting to shooting and editing is just spot on and amazing
The gnathonic syzygy of the quidnunc was so persiflage that it left the personage feeling floccinaucinihilipilificated.
Thanks for your honest review! It is so nice to see you review so many different things and to be mentioned this year with the Apple iPhone opening comments. It just goes to show you that viewers love and appreciate you and your word, and that the mfg’s admire you as well. Nice job Marques! Now if I could just get my hands on one of these at a price the average person could afford it would all be good. Really liking the looks of this and the White and interior amenities as well.
Compare it with a BMW x7 60i or a Lange Rover Rand Rover. In my opinion these two buddies are the direct competitions. An Escalade is more of a boss car rather than a driver’s car. Love the review!
Yes. It should not be compared to Highlander or Pilot. Rivian R1S is a luxury SUV. Should be comparable with BMW, Mercedes, Lincoln etc
Rivian is doing nice work. I really like their vehicles style and tech. I see a lot of them on the road here in San Diego. Glad the company is still going strong after Ford jumped out.
Ton of the trucks in Austin. Havent seen the SUV yet though
@@RT-qz5ciI see a few in the northwest side that I’m in

I think Ford jumped out not because they didn't believe in them but because they are a competitor.
They more than doubled their initial investment aaaand they got to take a $7B write down after the share prices fell so they can use that for tax advantages.
They never were going to be long-term holders of the stock. I'm sure they hoped the market wouldn't have topped out riiiight after the Rivian IPO but I'd say no one at Ford is thinking they made a mistake in their choices.
Was lucky enough to to order the R1T Launch Edition in 2019. It’s a marvel of engineering and I love it more every day.
I'm so in love with the R1S. It looks insane. It's literally my favorite SUV at the moment. The design overall is so sick. Love what Rivian is doing. I wish I could have one
🤦♀️🤦♀️ u ignored one major fact about this company🤦♀️ It is technically owned by the saudi royal mafia. 🤢🤢🤮 If this is a Chinese company, you would have mentioned that from the beginning, right?! 😒
I was between the R1S and Tesla Model X for awhile and after watching A TON of videos I'm convinced that the Model X and R1S aren't direct competitors as they serve different customers. Adventure, off-road, hauling - R1S. Road tripping, daily commuter, tech, comfort - Model X. In the Model X's case, I think a closer competitor would be the EQS SUV, just in case anyone was between the two like I was.
Hummer EV way better if u can afford it
Glad to hear you like the SUV. I work at rivian tirelessly with my co-workers to give you the best experience possible. Many thanks, from Trim 2 General Assembly 😊
Rivian is just killing it. Absolutely love my R1T 6 months and nearly 20k miles later.
One important topic that was missed is the road trip experience. A lot of three row vehicles are occasionally taken on long trips and the R1S does not match in range or charging infrastructure. Equivalent or cheaper gas vehicles in the same category can go significantly farther and don't have to deal with broken/slow chargers that occur with non-Teslas.
how often are people going on 400 mile road trips?
Agreed! At least until the Tesla charging network is opened up nationwide to all non-Tesla EVs, I would say the 3 row electric SUV king would currently be the Model X when roadtripping is considered.
True, but then you’re driving an ancient gas powered vehicle. It will take time but the charging will get there. Biggest hurdle is utilities and permitting.
Road trip experience with EV ... It's bad. That's the easiest conclusion. You're better off renting a gasoline car for the occasion you want to do that road trip.
The technology isn't there to make road trips enjoyable with EV imo.
“One important topic that was missed” 🤓
The risk of buying a Rivian is that they do not have the service infrastructure of established manufacturers like Ford or GM. There is one Rivian service center in Minnesota. One. That is an absolutely unacceptable risk to swallow as a buyer when the vehicles themselves cost ~$90K.
I mean but that’s Minnesota 15 people live there they can’t justify another service center
@@darealist690 MN is the 21st most populated state in the US at 5.7 million lmao. MN is more populated than the average state in the US.
For the meantime, Rivian R1S and R1T seem to be in a class of their own. For large electric SUVs and trucks, I suspect the most viable upcoming competitive set of vehicles will be all the variants of the GM Ultium platform trucks and SUVs. We already have the ridiculous GMC Hummer thing. Then the GMC Sierra Denali and Chevy Silverado EVs seem pretty close to production ready. It's only a matter of time before they start quickly releasing Tahoes, Suburbans, Yukons, and Escalades on the Ultium platform.
Ford Lightning FTW 🌩
The hummer ev looks way better only people that disagree cant afford it
Indeed this is a sexy car. We are looking for an electric SUV and I am trying to convince my husband to get a Rivian.
I do a fair amount of offroading, and I met a guy with an R1T at an off-road park a while back. He could do with his truck probably 90% of the things I could do in my very modified '93 4Runner, and my only real advantage was ground clearance, and the shorter wheel base should help a little with that. I'm sure there's some stuff he could do with all that power that I couldn't, too. So assuming the R1S is comparable, it is even pretty incredible from that perspective (although obviously recharging in the middle of nowhere is an issue).
What kind of doofus would take a luxury truck that costs nearly $100k offroad anywhere? Dents, scratches, and accidents are just a few things that happen to vehicles offroading.
By offroading, I'm not referring to the curb at a local mall... but more of a place like MOAB. The problem with the Rivian is weight, long wheelbase, and width of truck. All of those hurt you offroad, especially on narrow trails. Older vehicles are great for offroad because of a short wheelbase, less length and width (compact size), and parts are easy to repair and less expensive.
@@Panthers89Fan9000000 I've had my R1T a year now and I've taken it off-road a bunch here in CO where I live as well as in Utah, NM and Nevada. It's a beast off-road for a stock vehicle. For the gnarliest of trails I rent side-by-sides, which is the way to go on those types of trails anyway.
I can’t keep saying this enough but bro I’m PROUD of what you’ve accomplished! A million plus views on anything you post! No matter the duration or content! 🤯 Pure motivation and the epitome of not to judge a book by its cover! Keep going brody! ✊🏾
Rivian is the most impressive of all the EV only brands, in my opinion. Everyone touts Tesla, but they've had LOTS of quality issues over the years. RIvian seems to have taken their time under wraps developing a well sorted platform that was actually ready for prime time when they released it. They've had some minor issues and delays, but nothing compared to every Tesla rollout. They've done well and I could definitely see myself owning a R1T in the future.
Losing money for each car is not something I would consider using that "they've done it right" phase.
@@mateogomez8413 uhh… Tesla was losing thousands of dollars per vehicle produced from inception to about 2019… did someone tell you that car manufacturers are profitable right away?
@@mateogomez8413 what a dumb comment, do you not understand the economics of this business? How is Tesla’s story any different?
@@YumboYack2521 You seem to have misunderstood, it's one thing that it costs you more money to produce a car and then sell it for less, which is a loss per car.
Tesla in 2019 did not lose money for producing the car, the sale price of its vehicle generates profit, they had problems with the production ramp since at that time it was inefficient in China and could not keep up with the demand, problems of Logistics and other factors.

There are a lot of Rivians in my area, a lot, even multiple SUVs, I really like them. I have been tooling around in my buddy's Mach E for the last week or so and that's a very nice vehicle too and holy cow it is fast, like weird sensation fast. Super comfortable seats too.
That's crazy. I live in South Florida I've only seen, like, two R1Ts but I've yet to see an R1S.

@@venom5809 I agree this vehicle needs a bit of color.. I think the red and blue look great but are just too flashy for my taste so I always end up sticking with my original first choice, Forest Green. It's got the fun of having some color but is a little more conservative/inconspicuous than red or blue. "The gentleman's color". Also happens it was my favorite color as a kid. Note that I'm not talking about Launch Green (which is like a grayish camo green), I know a lot of people love it but I actually think that's the worst color. Though I agree I'm not a big fan of white either. As you can tell I'm looking forward to my truck.
i know this video is a bit old at this point. but i just wanted to say, the graph at like 1 minute in regarding the cost of vehcile parts is stellar. incredibly simple way of explaining how the price of the vehicles is going to differ.
as someone who owns a Land Rover LR3, I've found it really hard to even be in any other SUV, and seeing this, it literally has all the same features but its a more modern version, like all the space in the back, all the windows...the half opening tailgate...if I had the money I think this would be my replacement vehicle.

The ball gargling is crazy
Extremely well presented, thank you! I saw one of these yesterday and was not aware it existed. I have seen a couple of the pickups (ugh, the model names are forgetable), so was aware that the company's wares have actually trickled into my area. From articles I have read and the timeline of manufacturer's, the electric vehicles will be coming fast and furious over the next few years, and with that is competitive pricing. Related to this is the microwave oven which Amana introduced in 1967 retailing at $495. Watch a 50-year old episode of The Price is Right, and an Amana Radarrange was often featured, and quite expensive. It and air conditioners were luxury items in the 1970s, but now, very accessible between development costs and reduced with each unit sold, ever-improving technology. Interestingly, Amana still makes a Radarrange, and it is expensive compared to the ordinary common ones available for less than $100, but the Radarrange is more high end, made in the USA with the associated labor costs, and no where near what $495 in 1967 money equates to today in 2023: $4,000. Around 1980 is when Microwaves started to get a solid foothold in the American home, and soon to be followed by the VCR. Buying a video of your favorite film on VHS was $79.95 in the mid 1980s! In 1980s money!. So indeed, we are living and watching in real time a very obvious transition towards better (longer range) and less expensive electric vehicles. Along with the immediate and plentiful torque that provides performance once beyond even Supercar 0 to 60 times, the less expensive repair and maintenance costs to operate a much simpler machine, and the reduced cost of power (electric charging versus gasoline pump), most of the stumbling blocks impeding the progress of electic vehicles will be removed for the public at large. Yes, price is the last frontier to be knocked down, but after hearing about electric cars for years and considering them a folly, the momentum has increased incredibily in the past ten and especially five years. We are living in some intriquing high-tech times.
I see like 10 a day where I live... can't wait to get mine!
What a great and insightful comment you made, I love it
Personally, I'm one of the few people waiting for some EV Minivans to hit statewide. They give more interior height than a SUV, and my favorite minivans let you remove the seats, as well as lay them flat. My first car was a minivan, and when I was able to fit my Washing Machine in the cabin, but still have the great subwoofers and other features of a closed cabin rather than flatbed, I've been hooked.
Dude…. EV minivans would absolutely crush the segment. Those soccer moms would be ALL OVER a reasonably priced one.
@@Isaacmantxabsolutely. Especially since a Minivan is so well suited for the city driving style of EVs
Great vid as always Marques. I think a lot of folks would like to hear how this R1S compares to a Model X. What are the trade-offs between a Model-X vs the R1S? For example, how is the charging situation without Tesla’s charging network?
The only thing in common is that they both have four wheels and a battery. Only half kidding. Not even close. In October I did a write up of both after owning our R1S for 1 month and driving an X for an extended period. The R1S all day every day for its utility, value and quality.
Re: Charging network? I just returned from a trip to the South Carolina coast from Chicago. Charging was nary an issue. Yes Tesla’s headstart shows in the infrastructure but for the 5% use case of charging publicly? Not a big deal. And we have towed our trailer too.
@@philnwafor9140 Super helpful Phil! Thank you the comment. How about “autopilot” on the 2 vehicles? Tesla has been making some pretty useful updates. I noticed a big difference even today with the overnight update we just received from Tesla. Very smooth lane changes on a busy highway, and in city getting better. I really need to test drive an R1S it would seem…
I've heard from other journalists that the driving dynamics can be lacking even compared to the R1T. The rear end, according to them, can get a bit loose, and overall doesn't feel as dialed in even as the truck. Your thoughts? I'd think with air suspension that a software fix could improve those driving dynamics.

It's been fun to see the Auto Focus videos on all these cars and explore just how good EVs can actually be when they're designed well.
Why are Teslas not worth buying? If you’re in the market for sedans and cross overs, they’re kind of unbeatable. Makes sense for other sectors tho.

I love what Rivian has been doing with all their products, saw the R2 and R3 show from your channel and genuinely think that Rivian is on Track to become one of the big three EV companies. They are like the second company that comes to mind after Tesla, but they are quickly becoming the better option for so many reasons(I.e. quality control, good designs, UI, and overall good plan for future EVs). Of course, it all come down to if they can get that price down for some of their future vehicles, because it they can get the R3 to 40k maybe even 30k, then it would be a real game changer and would be a real contender for for my first big car purchase when it comes out.

The limestone grey on those dark rims looks so good. My R1T has been the best car/truck I've ever owned -- It truly does everything I would ever want a vehicle to do.
Except truck stuff 😂
We purchased the 2023 VW ID.4, and some might call it a modern wagon. However, it the perfect midsize SUV replacement for us. And, a lot more affordable at the time of purchase than competitors in the market. Of course, Tesla has continued to slash prices, to the point that an entry level Model Y is now on par with what we paid for our EV. Thanks,
I love the design
And overall shape
Ditto.
Hey Marques, love your content. Have you thought of adding metric values to text like the trunk size in 6:55 along with imperial units? I feel it would be helpful for non-US viewers
Google is your friend
They pulled a Honda fasho… they did that with the CR-V and the Ridgeline. Can’t tell the difference unless you look at it from a angle.
This video is a great improvement over the previous one. It doesn't look over sharpen. Also glad you are taking it out more then the parking lot.
As always amazing review ❤
its been 1 minute
Marques, have you driven the Polestar 2? I haven't had a chance to get in the Rivian but the Polestar was very luxurious to me, and the power from the dual motor was insane.
"In the end when the price gets lower". That's a good one, Marques 😂😂
Awesome review! Thank you for the insight and thorough explanations.
I love building these trucks. Satisfying to see everyone enjoying them. Quality is important. And we put that into each of these vehicles.
Can a full sized adult fit in the back row?
The shot at 9:58 is so beautiful, the way the blur is controlled and everything is so level is just 🤩
Seeing all that empty space underneath the first cover layer immediately I thought room for bass but when you pull up the foam omgg more bass
Hii, marques i discovered you in august 2022, and holy frick i love this channel.
The thing that I love the most is that even if it is sponsored you do your best to actually say what you think.
Keep going, love from Brazil!
Love the option to have a full spare tire in back. I love that pease of mind and very few cars offer one or even have space for one
It doesn't fit a full size in the R1S. Only a compact. R1T fits a full size though
I don’t buy many electronics but your reviews are great and thorough. God Bless you and continue the work. I suck at making RUclips videos.
You are just as good as reviewing EVs as good as you are reviewing tech
So, a bit above average?
@@ChristofferLund very above average
@@aayaan1935 Most of his stuff isn't in depth or doing much proper testing. It's mostly just his thoughts on it and it's usually very same-same or easy to guess his opinion before watching the video.
I don't hate the content, I watch all his videos, but other youtubers do way more in depth testing and more critical reviews.
And for car stuff it's fun to see his perspective from a non car guys perspective, but I'd trust Throttle House, Doug DeMuro or Top Gear more than Marques because they know so much more.
It's fun to see his thoughts, but it's mostly from a tech perspective.
Split tailgate is a BMW X5 feature and fabulous. Beyond what you highlight as benefits is the smaller top tailgate requiring less space to open. Great in garage and for loading.
I drive through Bloomington IL all the time and see their cars on delivery trucks. Seems like a great company.
90% of people don't need a car this big
99% of people don't need $10 lattes... 🙂
This is for that 10% then
That is somewhat true. Sure, not everyone needs a large SUV, but it’s a good amount of people (more like 70% [people who live somewhere where they need an SUV or have a large family]) and SUVs are a very big part of Texas car culture. Also, you need to account for all of the idiots who live in California and think they need a huge SUV even though they’re 5’11 and only going to use one seat.
You had software issues with the R1T (door locking and unlocking, etc) did you experience the same issues or has that been addressed overall with software update’s including the R1T?
There have been small improvements but there are still issues. Namely it locking when you don’t want it to and it taking a few seconds to unlock sometimes. I think the latter is an iOS issue as it usually unlocks the second I wake my phone up (not even unlock it). Overall it works well enough, I definitely wouldn’t let it stop you. I own an R1T but there aren’t going to be any differences here across models.
Rivian imo has the potential to become just as mainstream and big as tesla, they seem to make amazing EV's
Hey just a request, I do watch all your autofocus videos not only for the great content but also to checkout the video quality, it would be nice of you to mention which phone did you shoot the video with, in the description
Probably iPhone 14 pro
@@sillimilli3802 might be but not certain, some thing is not right if it would have been a iPhone 14 pro🥴
@@mathguy198 Check the car reflections, this time he used a full frame camera instead of a smartphone

The best SUV in the world is my 1994 Toyota 4Runner
Over the Land Cruiser really?
No but the land cruiser is not available in NA
I swear, all of those Toyotas have the same exact distinctive smell.
Actually, electreic card predated gasoline powered ones in the late 1800's. In fact, Belgian Camille Jenatzi set a speed records of 100km/60MPH in 1899. When Standard Oil, Firestone and GM got together to take over the vehicle market, they forced cities to change over from street cars to busses. They also priced cars so that gas powered cars became cheaper than electric ones, thus killing that new-born industry.
I’m a Ford guy so I’m really rooting for Rivian. That being said no way it’s the best 3 row. Top 5 with out a doubt but no way it’s number one (unless you only want electric). If I had money money I would get the Cadillac Escalade V for super fun daily driving. If I was off road oriented I would never get a electric car because there’s no where to quickly charge in the world let alone in Glamis or Moab or Baja or even just at your local mountain trails. If I had to get a 3 row off roader it’d probably be a new Toyota sequoia or Toyota 4Runner. Lol I know I said I’m a Ford guy and I choose a GM and Toyotas for my 3 row picks, but Ford doesn’t have any great 3 rows right now. They are good but now great.
It can't possibly be the "best" SUV ever, for two reasons:
1. It has a glass roof (what is it with EV makers thinking this is a good idea?). Setting aside the structural compromises that have to be made to have 2 HUGE plates of glass inserted into the roof of the vehicle, this pretty much eliminates any buyers in sun-baked areas, like the entire southwest region of the United States. No amount of tint or "coating" will stop the sun's laser-like beams from penetrating that glass in the Southern Nevada summers.
2. The suspension has MAJOR issues. Throttle House did a review of this SUV and found that it is VERY unstable when turning or making abrupt steering changes at speed. They avoided using the word "unsafe" directly but that's what they meant. NO, I don't expect it to handle like a sports car but if I'm ever in a situation where I need to swerve really fast in order to avoid a collision, I don't want the back end coming out from behind me and causing said collision to happen anyway.
I really wanted this vehicle. I am a proponent of competitive innovation and I think companies like Tesla need rivals in order to keep things healthy. Unfortunately, until the above issues are resolved, I'm probably going to have to look elsewhere.
I can't do glass roof either. That's why I'm stuck with model s. About to order model Y but too many little issues
Very beautiful and high tech suv looking forward to seeing the market evolve and offer lower price options for the mainstream! Exciting
I would LOVE to have this but the cost is absolutely insane!!!!
100k
I just did a market research assessment sponsored by Ram Truck and they had a Rivian there and pretty much directed it down to the bolts....Dodge is absolutely going after the eTruck market in 2025/2026....
Do you have any data from the market research you can share? I’m a business student so that kind of studies intrigues me

MKB Very nice love the color and the space is great,But when you reviewed the first one it looked Sharp. Thanks so much enjoyed. ✌️💯
Great review!
I just cannot get past the design of the headlights! From the side, this EV looks amazing.
Yeah me to makes it look like a cartoon eyes front
I love the design of the front. rather that than something boring 🤷
On one side of the argument, yes: the lights are a bit odd. Quite unusual. But the flipside of that argument, in my opinion, makes up for it: most EVs have ugly and featureless fronts. Looking at you, Tesla. The Rivian models are a welcome departure with some design that actually has some character despite the lack of a need for a grille that is traditionally used for a big part of said character.
My adult life is starting to come together and I’m excited because by the time I’m ready to buy a car, these may be cheaper and in my budget.
Also RJ looks like an honest company head, and he be lookin like Steve O.
The Rivian R1S has got character! ...and Marques, I'm pushing that press button for ya! Can't afford this yet, but it sounds like a whole lot of fun to drive! 😜
I really liked the R1S just couldn’t get to the price point. I also wanted to see the company show me a few years of deliveries and stability. For now I will love my Model Y Perf but in a few years my next one might be a Rivian… the dual motor version also makes it a more attractive package. A little less performance for more range.
That Tesla charging network agreement makes the Rivian make even better.
I really hope the quad motor (IWD) drivetrain can reach $60k.
I’ve had the R1T on my radar for a while, but not being a truck person, it was also a little ehhh for me. But seeing basically the same thing in an SUV format? Much more my speed, so this is exciting! I do hope tho that they come up with a sedan and/or coupe soon
I think I prefer the truck version. Even if you're a family of 5 the truck looks pretty comfortable seating wise, plus you get the gear tunnel, you can still cover your bed for storage, and then you have a whole truckbed you can use whenever you need it.
The shots of Marques when inside the car, driving it. They give me a Don Cheadle vibe... (and obviously that's a compliment)
I actually have a (loaded, pre-price hike) Limestone R1S on order, so I much appreciated this review... even though my (maybe) R1S is still a year away somehow. Trying to figure out if it makes a good replacement for my '23 Range Rover Sport, which I also love.
Will probably be more reliable. Gotta dump the rover when warranty is up. They become money pits quickly
@@Joeblk10 - No doubt. Love Rovers (this is my 4th), but not enough to keep after warranty. No way.
Great video! You mentioned a couple of times how expensive this car is. But what do you think about the long term gas savings compared to the price of the car? Long term, is the savings from gas going to offset the price of the car?
No
Please add metric values in the future for non-us viewers. Besides of that, great video as always 👍
Nice, I would hate a white interior ( I feel the same way about white kitchens), but way out of the price range that I would be willing to pay for. If you get out into the hinterlands, like where I live, and see how few charging stations there are, electric cars seem like fiction. I live in an apartment complex and there's no way we'll get charging stations here unless someone else is paying for them. I am still unconvinced that running an electric car is cheaper than running a gasoline engine. I'd like to see a video from you where you discuss in depth the various charging platforms and how much it costs to charge a variety of vehicles. I may sound like a nonbeliever, and I am not an average consumer, things would need to be in a price range where I would be willing to spend and the charging infrastructure needs to be more convenient to make it worth my while.
A $100,000 vehicle is not for someone living in an apartment or condo anytime soon.
Dirk I honestly don’t believe that people actually buy electric cars to save money on gas. I don’t even think it’s for the environment… Maybe just Prius drivers believe that. You buy an EV because you want it, it’s something different, you want to be one of the first to adopt it, you like the way it drives with the instant torque. I drive a 2022 BMW I4 M50. I like it because it doesn’t look like an EV. But beside the very smooth driving to drop my kids at Daycare….. there is something amazing about instant no lag no down shift acceleration of 540 horsepower vehicle that stays planted to ground due to the heavy battery and pushes you back that I just love. I know that this feeling will eventually become normal as EV’s become more affordable so I will enjoy difference for as long as I can.

Ditto what Nelson said. This isn't your truck. I work over in Marin County, and there are quite a few Rivians running around. Rivians are for folks who have 2nd homes in Tahoe or June Lake. Or Incline Village.
I feel the same way about white people
Great review. I really like Rivians. I'm going to make an unpopular prediction: Electric vehicles will stay in that luxury, minority-of-cars space for much, much, much longer than anyone thinks. Gas will continue for the foreseeable future. The elephant in the room is batteries, battery materials, global battery supply chains, battery lifecycles, battery costs, etc. The sum total of battery hurdles will keep them in the land of luxury and conspicuous consumption for many years, and I think that nations and states with aggressively optimistic policies on EV adoption will be forced to walk those back when reality sets in.
I like the prediction and agree. Our economy is way too precarious as it is. Continued or additional conflicts around the world or another pandemic and it will set the whole tangled up economy back two+ years. Joe schmoe citizen, $600 in the savings account and no solar panels just can’t handle that. Politicians will feel the pressure very quickly
Most of Europe has pretty strict rules until new gas driven cars can be sold. EVs are the future for normal everyday cars
