I’m currently in the phase where I’m thinking of converting to Catholicism. I’m so close. The immaculate conception and purgatory are by far the hardest for me to accept, but I’m warming up to it. I pray the rosary, I have a catholic study Bible along with other catholic books, and I have some good catholic friends. Please pray for me to give my all to the Catholic Faith 🙏🏼🇻🇦

Cradle Catholic here, but questioning purgatory based on hundreds of near death experiences I've recently watched on YT and people who meet Christ immediately. But I believe I can still be a Catholic even if I disagree on one thing! If that's the only thing holding you back, I say go for it.

There's only one "obstacle" to overcome really. If you believe in the authority of the Pope, then you're individual interpretation of every other objection immediately becomes moot because you yield your opinion to The Church ✝️❤

@@omadasNo actually there is no such thing as “cafeteria Catholicism”. You either believe everything the church teaches or you are not truly Catholic because the church is the pillar and bulwark of truth. The concept of purgatory is taught in several passages of scripture but the most obvious is taught directly by Jesus in the parable of the master and the servants in Luke 12:43-46. The faithful servant was given all the possessions of the household (heaven), the wicked servant was cut up and put with the unfaithful (hell), the unprepared servant received a severe beating while the ignorant servant received a light beating (purgatory).

@@omadas In many NDEs, people claim to have met Christ and all who came back, were allowed to return either to mend their ways or complete their work for God here on earth. NDEs don't contradict purgatory. We also know a number of Saints who have been to purgatory and were shown visions of purgatory, and many documented visitations of souls from purgatory to request prayers and help.

I hope you are doing well on your journey. Two things - Jesus was without sin, therefore he *had* to be born from a mother without sin. Not only do we believe that Jesus was without sin, we also believe that Mary went through her life without sin and as a virgin. Remember that although he was fully human, he was and is fully divine also. With God, anything in possible, including the immaculate conception of his only son, his divine son.
On purgatory - purgatory is not a bad thing, and it is not hell. The pain suffered there is the pain of separation from God. But we know that every single soul in purgatory will be in heaven! There are many good Catholics who die while still having attachments to material and earthly things - they need time and some degree of further penance before they are ready for heaven, which is a perfect place. The holy souls in purgatory can also pray for us here on earth. As a sinner, I aim for heaven but am so very glad for purgatory!
I would suggest following the Uniquely Mary RUclips account, which is dedicated to the souls in purgatory. Please don't be afraid of purgatory and any misconceptions you may have about it.
Catholicism, following the faith instituted by Christ means going through the 'narrow door' - it is not only a difficult path with many sacrifices required, but also the most joyful and rewarding.
      God Bless
      🙏

I was told there’s almost that number going through the spiritual discernment of doing the same. CS Lewis believed in purgatory, though he wasn't a Roman Catholic. I've always believed in the judgment of the believer for the reasons you have discussed. 2 Corinthians 5:10 "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad." There are tests and trials of God's Fatherly discipline while we are still alive that are meant to refine us, as well. I've always thought of that as a sort of "living purgatory".

and Kenny was saying something about the Eucharist, and I opened my eyes & started listening, it woke me up in the middle of the night around 5am.
So ever since then those guys have helped me on my journey crossing the Tiber, I haven't been baptized yet as a Catholic, but I definitely plan to.
So I just want to thank you, when you came on the episodes, with u guys being ex-protestants, u guys knew what questions needed to be answered 💯 u guys have helped me out so much.

I pray in the future Lord willing, that my family comes to see the truth in Catholicism, bc they're anti-catholics.
But so was I, and still came to see the truth about Apostolic Succession, & saw it was the Holy Apostolic Catholic Church that is the Church Jesus Christ started in the 1st century 💯
I pray my family, friends see that "sola scriptura" is false, that all protestants we are coming up with our own interpretations of scripture, & became our own popes lowercase "p".

Kenny, wonderful talk. Just saw it today. I loved it. I also loved your similar talk on sola scriptura. In my mind, non-Catholic Christians, and I include Eastern Orthodox in this grouping, do not understand Catholicism and have these blocks against it, ranked in order of biggest: 1. Anti-Catholic bias for any reason; 2. Against papal authority; 3. Ignorance of real Catholic facts and beliefs; and 4. Anti-Mary, no matter what. I believe converts such as yourself (and Keith, and Scott, and Jimmy [you know who they are]) can possibly break through these reflexive components of stubbornness. By the way, I also cut Catholics no slack and think we can take a cue from the protestants (but just remove the word sola!) and study more about scripture, faith, grace, Christ, and God's glory. Thank you, and God bless!

Thanks, Gary! So good! It's so much work, but well worth it. I think your four points of typical rejection/misunderstanding are in the right order and a good list. I liked your talk. Clear and simple. Very good. I realize your talk is not exhaustive on the subject. One reference of Jesus to purgation (purgatory) is one that I heard Father Mitch Pacwa reference some time ago. It is the parable of the 4 servants in Luke 12: 41-48. The first servant did all his master's bidding and found ready at the return of the master. The second servant guessed that his master was to delay his coming, beat the maid servants and man servants and got drunk. Upon the master's early arrival, this servant was put with the *unfaithful*. That would be hell. Of the other two, one got a severe beating and the other, a light beating. But, these last two were not put with the unfaithful. They just got *beatings*, according to what they had done or according to the knowledge that they had about what the master required. The beatings would be the purgation. They were not put with the unfaithful.

Your description of Purgatory sounds a lot more appealing than the place of punishment that I thought Purgatory was. I would like to have the sin in my heart purged away by fire. I am curious, though, why some early Protestants decided that Purgatory was a belief that they weren't going to hold. They didn't reject the concept of Heaven or the concept of Hell. As I understand it, Martin Luther was so against Purgatory that he removed seven deutero-canonical books from his Bible just because of a short passage in 2 Maccabees that he thought supported Purgatory. Of course, you're not Martin Luther, so I can't blame you if you don't know Luther's exact reasoning.

    • @KennyBurchard
      @KennyBurchard  Год назад +3

The short answer is that Luther came to believe in forensic positional justification (imputation) understood as a change in status from sinner to righteous person which could not be lost. What, then, was the place for something like purgation or the work of sanctification (the proper role of penance and indulgences) if a change in status took place and is all that is necessary for salvation. Conversely Catholics believe in ACTUAL righteousness as being necessary and thus connect the need for purging and real-life correction (indulgences) as integral elements included in the way out of a life of practicing sin.

It seems bizarre that they should have a problem with it except for their anti-Catholicism. They could argue it's not explicitly found within the Bible, but that just goes back to the Sola scriptura problem where an atheist reading the Bible openly could say the trinity, mono/dyothelitism, etc, none of that's in there. While they are just following their tradition, what underlies it seems to be a very different attitude toward God's justice and personal culpability/how sin weight on someone's soul. If you murder someone, you can repent and avoid eternal punishment for that crime, but you have still wronged the person's family by killing them. We know someone can commit sins, venial sins, and still be saved, yet they are still personally culpable. We also know no can enter heaven with that sin still weighing on their soul, so a process/state of it being expurgated seems a fine interpretation. And you can tell they don't care about the actual doctrine because they never ask why, why do they believe praying for souls in purgatory does anything. Praying for souls in purgatory makes sense with the actual doctrine not so much with their false view of it. Protestants tend to act much more like atheists in this regard
Also many protestants, especially more traditional ones, believe in additional heavenly rewards for good acts, yet they reject that you will be judged for your evil acts. You might not get those heavenly rewards, but you won't be held to account for every bad word, that will just be erased and you'll be merely saved

This is truly inspiring. May I just make a comment, maybe from what you have just said that purgatory is not a place, or you do not know where it really is, it’s just where God is still present, meaning we are destined to be saved at some time or until the work of our savior Jesus is completed in us, could it be the prison mentioned in Matthew 5: 25-26 which is just also somewhere in heaven, where we can only be released after we have paid the last penny, so we can be released after we have been purged of all the temporal punishments that we should have made here in earth, thereby seeing God in his full glory, the beatific vision? Pls enlighten me. Thank you and God bless your ministry🙏🙏🙏

It's probably quite a painful purification, depending on the level of cleansing necessary. Saint Padre Pio talked to at least one soul from Purgatory who appeared to him in church: after promising the poor man that he would pray for him the next day (it was night already), the saint was called a 'cruel man.' That suggests that even a few hours of Purgatory may be for some an 'intense' experience...

Question: is purgatory a dogma? In other words, is this doctrine a non-optional one? I am asking because I heard that limbo as a teaching was demoted, somewhat, about 20 years ago. If so, could the same be said of this teaching? It seems to have gone through a lot of changes over the ages.
Also, can it be admitted that this doctrine has been used to manipulate people? I can't imagine a better way to gather contributions, as was the case in Luther's time.
Please know that I am NOT trolling. I am truly curious.

    • @djo-dji6018

The Limb of Patriarchs is part of Catholic doctrine but the Church is more cautious/uncertain about the Limb of Infants. The existence of a sacred purgation (the Purgatory) is a dogma, which means it's a certain and unchangeable doctrine. Even if the idea of a post-mortem purification was used with ill intentions in the past, Purgatory is a reality and the only question has been whether it's an actual place or a process - but that aspect is not part of the dogma anyway. Luther created his own religion with the excuse of temporary diffuse corruption within the true Church of Christ. That to me sounds worse than anything the Catholic Church has ever done during 2000 years of history.

I view purgatory as an experience SOME Christians will experience. POINT #1: John 5: 24--One passes from life into the Beatific Vision. POINT #2: I like what an Anglican priest once told me: Purgatory is our final, personal growth into God after death.
I personally don't buy into this "medieval horror show following death" that various mystics talk about (and doctrinally, I am not obligated to). And that sort of stuff is palmed off on us right up to the present day. Personally I don't care what Padre Pio and St.
    Faustina "saw" concerning Purgatory.

Hi Johhnny. Thank you for the comment. I like this. And I agree with it. As a Catholic we are not bound to accept the particular ideas of "a Catholic" regarding a Dogma. Only the Dogma itself. The Catechsim does not contain any of the visionary or imagined elements of the Dogma that come out of any age or any person. I hear Catholics share a variety of perspectives about many things. Together we are bound to believe what the Church of Jesus tells us. But NOT bound to believe what a person may think about it. There are many ideas about Purgatory that I fully reject, but I accept that it is true nonetheless. Sounds like that is your position as well.

LUKE 12 The Faithful or the Unfaithful Slave
41 Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?” 42 And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing. 44 Truly, I tell you, he will set him over all his possessions. 45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will punish[f] him, and put him with the unfaithful. 47 And that servant who knew his master’s will, but did not make ready or act according to his will, shall receive a severe beating. 48 But he who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, shall receive a light beating. Every one to whom much is given, of him will much be required; and of him to whom men commit much they will demand the more.

Question: is this "purging/cleansing" painful, that is, like a physical torture? If so, why? This sounds like we are somehow bearing some of our own sins by our own agony. If in fact we were "washed clean" at our regeneration, then why another level of sin- bearing? This is perhaps why many find this teaching problematic. Did the Cross in fact satisfy the requirements of God, or not? This video makes me think that the answer is no. It's as if the cross only opened a door, and that's all.
