    I am torn about cash envelopes. I LOVE the feel of counting bills out, the clarity of how much I am spending, and being able to see the money going back into savings. I HATE having to figure out how to hold onto money for costs that don't follow set schedules, having to juggle multiple envelopes on shopping trips, and in general having large amounts of cash on me or in my house. Therefore I do all of my financial planning in a spreadsheet and when I go shopping I take out just the cash I need for that trip based on my budget and shopping list(s). Extras go into an emergency cash envelope. The tragedy is that the sound and feel of paper money trigger something in us that lets us know it's a precious commodity in a way that a card or spreadsheet never will.

      I’m with you on the “not having large sums of money on me or in my home.” For this reason, I bought prop money from Amazon to use as a visual stimulant and digital envelopes within my bank app. Having too much on me at any one point makes me nervous. Lol😅

    • @1960tlm
      @1960tlm 9 месяцев назад +19

      I am with you about having large amounts of cash on me or in the house. I use a system where I place some money on a debit card (this card has no fees & is not attached to my checking account or bank) so that when I am out shopping I don't have to carry a lot of cash, or when I want to shop on Amazon I don't have to use my bank or credit card. This keeps me on budget with my envelopes. I budget the same exact way, but keep some "envelope" items on the debit card such as gas, groceries & clothing. For example, If I have $1000 on the debit card & I've allocated $150 for gas I don't cheat. I stay within the limits that I used for my budget. $150 for gas, $300 for groceries etc. It's an extra step to load the card and takes discipline to stay on track, but this has saved me thousands because I'm not using my bank or credit card and I only have access to what has been loaded on the debit card. I don't overspend.
      It works extremely well.

      I’m on SS/DI and it takes my whole paycheck practically to satisfy my monthly fixed expenses! I divide weekly spending money from any extra income I earn from sells, baby or house/dog sitting, garage sales, etc. I’m still able to use the cash envelope system while still using auto pay or money orders for rent.

    I’ve been budgeting for the past 7 years. My method is pretty simple. When I first started. I add up all the bills/categories for the month. Let say it comes up to be $3000 a month. I just take out $3k to cover that month of expenses to start. From that point on, I put away $1500 from a biweekly paycheck for next month bills. What ever left of that paycheck can go to savings or sinking funds. This method works beautifully.

    Very good video. I'm in a no-spend year so I don't buy anything for cash stuffing. I've been using what I have instead for decades. I moved away from home in 1973, bought a package of envelopes and set up my budget. I still use paper envelopes for some parts of budgeting. I used to use the small accordion plastic files for coupons. I don't use many paper coupons anymore, so I started using those as category dividers for cash. I use the plastic files for current spending and paper envelopes to roll unused money into. Works well for me. I'd love to have pretty binders and beautiful envelopes... things to make them beautiful, but I live on a small fixed income. I WANT fancy, but I don't need it. I need money in the bank more than pretty binders. That's me in my situation. Others choose to go with beautiful, and if that's what they want and can afford, more power to them!😊
    I'm just really glad to hear you talking about frugal ways to cash stuff and budget. Go YOU!!!

    This was a great video for you to do, especially as most of your followers are from the planner community. This is a way to reach people that would not be thinking about cash stuffing but perhaps are struggling a bit with their budgets. I am passionate about trying to reach people who need help with personal finance. I use a combination of Prop Money and real money. My prop money is how I track what is in those categories as I keep all the money in one account. This is such a great visual way to see what you have to spend in each category. Stuffing the cash in many ways activates the brain just like physically writing something in your planner. Even though it may be prop money, when I stuff that into an envelope, the amount I have to spend sticks better in my head.

    The more I watch the more I think this is the most helpful beginner video I’ve watched! THANK YOU! Another question is.. what do u do when u get paid monthly? I’d rather keep track of all of this weekly to avoid confusion and too many things that can happen in a month of not cash stuffing. Any tips? :)

    • @Happy2planwithDesiree
      @Happy2planwithDesiree  11 месяцев назад +3

      Yay! So happy to hear that! If I got paid monthly I would just split my check into 4 or 5 depending on the amount of weeks in the month. And then I would take that amount and use it for the week's cash stuffing. So If I got paid $2k a month and it was a 4 week month I would have $500 each week to plan with for cash stuffing. Depending on when your bills need to be paid. you could also adjust for the week if you have more/larger amount bills to pay for. But definitely split the check into small amounts and cash stuff every week!

      Spending is for anything. I have used it in the past to buy some girls scout cookies, flowers, Crumbl cookies and even bandaids 😅. I also use it to help out with other envelopes. If I don’t have enough in another envelope I can use my spending envelope for the difference. So if I’m buying some clothes and only have $30 but need $60 I will just use the $30 in spending to get me to $60. Hope that all makes sense!

    I’m curious, How do you know how many amounts 100s 50s 20s 10s 5s and 1s out of the bank?

    • @Happy2planwithDesiree
      @Happy2planwithDesiree  9 месяцев назад

      I usually ask for the least amount of denominations for each category. So if I need $25 I will ask for a $20 and a $5 but sometimes there are instances where I might need small denominations in a category so I will ask for 2 x $10 and a $5 or any other type of combination. But usually I go with the least amount. Here's a video showing that ruclips.net/video/ES_6dttCKTE/видео.htmlsi=teb2pThjUvr1Owwa

    @ 27:00 I just deduct the $10 or whatever I use my card on from the amount I withdraw for cash stuffing 😂 Makes less trips to the bank for me!

    What do you do if there's a week where your bills are higher than your income?

    • @Happy2planwithDesiree
      @Happy2planwithDesiree  11 месяцев назад

      One thing that I like to do is split some of my bills. For instance with my rent I showed how I split it into different pay periods so that way I don't have to pay the whole lump sum at once. Since I save for this a month ahead it's easy to use this method for any of the larger bills that come up. Right now I am saving for my November Rent payment and since I get paid 7 times this month (5 from my full time job and 2 from side income) it makes my rent payment a lot easier to save for without taking up all of my income for the week! Hope that makes sense

    If I get paid weekly, should I use the money from that paycheck to use for that week I’m in? Or am I stuffing for the next week? I’m so confused about which money I’m using when?

    • @xaria8316
      @xaria8316 3 месяца назад

      So if I get paid 1000 dollars this week, that is my money to spend for that week? I’m usually saving all my checks and waiting for a month so I can budget for the following month. Is this wrong?

    • @Happy2planwithDesiree
      @Happy2planwithDesiree  3 месяца назад

      I usually use the money that I get paid for this week to stuff for next week. When you first start there's a bit of adjustment but once you start doing it this way will work out great for the weeks following.

    Your video was the best one I've seen out of probably close to 100 I've watched, explaining how to decide what goes in your sinking funds. I like that you dont follow specific percentages, etc. You just prioritize the categories and load what you think is most appropriate for that paycheck. Thank you so much for clearing that up for me! ❤

    I want to start cash stuffing but I don’t want to lose out on credit card rewards. Also, making multiple trips to the bank feels like something I don’t know if I would be able to keep up. All of my bills are automated. Sigh….

    Great video. Really liked the video about making cash envelopes too. They were both very detailed. How about a video comparing cash wallets? I have recently purchased a few and then when I get them I’m like whoa that’s not the size I expected. 😂 Maybe compare different sizes vs different types vs different brands.
