      It really grossed me out that after he gave a self-pitying speech in which he apologised to everyone except the guy he assaulted, and gives the feeble excuse that "people do crazy things for love" (which sounds like something a domestic abuser would say), he got a standing ovation from the audience 😠

    • @thesprawl2361
      @thesprawl2361 2 года назад

      @@jp9707 It's weird. Usually there's an obvious split: one person's unpopular and the other's popular...or one person's popular with conservatives and the other's popular with liberals. But this was just two universally liked people, and there's ways to spin it from either side - some people said it was 'great to see a man standing up for his black wife' which is a bit mental, and focused on the tastelessness of Rock's joke...and others said Rock 'could've been killed', which is also a bit mental.
      What an insane moment. It might be the most insane moment in live TV history, this stuff just doesn't happen with mega-celebs normally - they're meant to be flawless and untouchable. Amusing that the usual suspects said it 'made black people look bad'. 🙄🤦‍♂️

    • @Taurusus
      @Taurusus 2 года назад +4

      @@thesprawl2361 My immediate reaction was, "Oh no, Will, you just gave _so many people_ something to talk about..."
      And yes, Rock's joke was... not great? with or without context. Which just makes the "discussion" more muddied. Because when you praise him for taking the hit so calmly and gracefully, when it would have been *very, very easy* to escalate, you're met with, "Well, he could have _not_ made a joke at the expense of someone's medical condition?" Which, yes, sure, but that response...
      Ugh. What a shame, and a mess.

    • @thesprawl2361
      @thesprawl2361 2 года назад +4

      @@Taurusus I think 'what a shame, what a mess' is probably the most accurate summary of this situation. I'd just be mortified, especially on the night I won the Oscar, to finally win it and then to do something that will forever render that achievement a footnote.
      I bet Putin's pleased though. This will render Ukraine an irrelevance in the press for the next fortnight or so.

      I'd be a whole hell of a lot more sympathetic if I hadn't come to the conclusion over the years that Will Smith was creepy from watching him talk over everyone on Graham Norton and other talk shows. His kids are also insufferable, which probably stems from their parents putting them so out there at such a young age. I don't care how awesome I think my kids are. There's no way that kids that aren't even in middle school should be allowed to have that much exposure. Pile on me if anyone wants to, but my mind won't be changed.

    They should replace the Oscar statue with one depicting an image of Amber's last expression here; it's the only way the awards can continue in this new reality

    Ah, Amber. Thank you for making me laugh about this -- the literal last time I care about the Oscars. I've been e been so sad/mad about it I've been avoiding any and all stories and videos and I saw this in my feed and was like, ok, I trust Amber to talk about this right, and boy did you. This was brilliantly done.
