A friend of mine just left teaching in public school after a "young Will Smith" slapped him in the face in front of the classroom. He told me it is happening more and more in public schools. He said it is also not uncommon to see a public school kid pick up a trash can or other heavy object and knock another kid out. Sure the kids get put out og school but they don't care. Public school is not what you remembered from the 60's and 70's. In my day kids had to be able to read/write and do Math to graduate. Now they just give them a diploma if they put a warm body in a desk enough times.
