Hey amber, did you know that my grandmother's birthday is on June 19th? Well now you do! Alice k Wilson of St Louis Missouri will turn 103 and counting!
Happy Juneteeth! June is the best month. :)

Seems we still struggle to be completely free, but we will stay the course and bring everyone with us.
Happy Father's Day, for those we hold in our arms and those we hold in our hearts.
The "How did we get here" videos should be shown in every school!!!
100% agree. I'm quite salty that I had to wait 46 years to learn my country's history from a comedian instead of learning it in the school system I was forced to attend for 12 years.

Thank you, Amber, for once again teaching me more in 6 minutes than I learned in 12 years of public school.
What a true statement and honestly someone should definitely recognize the caliber of it besides me but I’m sure they won’t, but let’s continue to get educated and educate! Thank you Rowynne and thank you Amber!

I am a Texan and we have been celebrating this all my life. This was not new to us here in Central Texas. However none of my friends in other states knew what it was.
I'm from Detroit and we celebrated it here all my life
I'm glad to see Juneteenth getting national recognition, it's something Texas will never forget.
Same! I was raised in Galveston, and I, a Latina, grew up celebrating Juneteenth every year with parades, food, and performances. I had no idea it wasn't celebrated everywhere until I went to college.
Galeveston is ground zero for Juneteenth. The reason it wasn't celebrated everywhere is because a lot of other places had their own celebrations centered around their own hometown's emancipation day. Places like Detroit picked up Juneteenth because their state didn't have an emancipation day. There was a big argument over whether Juneteenth or Dec. 6th should be the national holiday. The wrong day won. @@alanacholmes
This line is everything and I hope more Caucasian people learn this lesson:
*"Try to enjoy something Without Making It All About YOU!"*
Exactly!!
Not possible... the only reason why it SUDDENLY became a federal holiday is to avoid reparations... trust me. Harriet Tubman on the dollar bill and a Haitian woman elected that's afraid to even mention reparations. In other words celebrate and shut up talking about receiving money.
She's the one who's obsessed with white people. Hate is an obsession by definition, and that Harriet Tubman argument is so illogical it can only come from hate.
Or claiming and renaming it!
@@tomboy5079 ...speak more truths...
My 8 year old made a point of saying (if front of a bunch of other white people), "Oh, this is the holiday that should have been a holiday a hundred years ago!". Ha!

Strangely enough, June 19th is Labour Day in my country and it’s also the first country to celebrate Emancipation Day 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹
Interestingly enough, June 19th is also Father's Day in the United States every few years.
So my Great Grandfather, who lost an arm, and his brother who lost a leg fighting with the 7th Iowa Infantry at the Battle of Pea Ridge had nothing to do with it?
Another home run! I learned something and laughed at the same time. Thanks Amber, you’re fantastic!
Learn another thing. The Juneteenth flag is Red White and Blue!
You're welcome
What did you learn other than that Amber doesn't know history?
Give the writer that wrote the “ Stacey Adams” joke a raise!!! LOL!!!
It was Michael Harriot who wrote it, apparently.
Agreed!
My employer decided to make Juneteenth one of their paid holidays this year!
So.. no cobbler, then?

Freeing people who should be free is something nobody should take credit for
Did you find out it was the Republicans that forced the democrats to give up their slaves?
Yeah who cares if hundreds of thousands of people died to free slaves right?
When the people that should have been free weren't free, it's something to be proud of even if it took a way too long and a war.
I thought she was going to pull out a glass of Kool-Aid. What flavor you ask? Red! Some of that “House Party” Kool-aid!! 😁😋
I would have put money on grape soda.

So sad that history class will never go over this. Thanks for educating us!
The truly sad thing about that is that I learnt this in my history class, in Sweden.
No one cares
Considering how full of historical inaccuracies this is, it is truly sad that you learned this is Sweden. They need to do better there.@@Bookwright
I saw the thumbnail and was like, "Labor Day?" I watched the episode and was like, "she right."
I did like that joke, but the correct day for the new "Labor Day" is Dec. 6. Her version of history is not correct.

December 18th 1865 was the day the last slaves were freed in the US. Kentucky and Delaware had slwves until then.
I don't suppose we could get the recipe for that Junetini, could we? Pretty please?
Firstly, Amber Ruffin is adorable. Secondly, this old white woman learns so much stuff I never knew from these “how did we get here” segments. I thought I was relatively well informed. I was not
I'm glad to read your comment. It makes me hopeful that maybe more ppl will be open to learning, understanding and embracing forgotten, or overlooked parts of America's history. Salute to willingness to listen, without judgment or condemnation.🤗
The 13th Amendment is not forgotten or overlooked by history classes. This is not obscure. That there wasn't a national holiday for the end of slavery was embarrassing, but it's almost more embarrassing that we put it on the wrong day and that every few years it has to share a date with Father's Day. @@tracyburris612

Your government can't even get THAT right. Thank you, much respect and many thanks to Harriet Tubbman!! Keep up the great work, Amber and Hugs from Canada!
The United States Government intentionally doesn't want to get it right. Why you think United States became a more powerful country than Canada. The men who devised this country and still at its helms are the masters of deceit.

It was celebrated in Texas is what I'm thinking because I live in NY, and we've never celebrated Juneteenth until recently. My South & North Carolina relatives never celebrated it, Never heard of Juneteenth until a.few.years ago.
South and North Carolina had their own Emancipation day celebrations that I'm sure like the ones that went on in my state on May 20th are being over shadowed by a holiday on the wrong day being promoted by people like Amber that don't know their history.

A quarter of a million people still living in slavery didn't say on Juneteenth.
So glad she’s back!
AMBER, I NEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDD a recipe for the Junteni, because that is a tradition that needs to exist!
Juneteenth wasn’t historically celebrated everywhere. In Virginia, we celebrated Emancipation Day. That date depended on the area in which the celebration was held.
You are so right. I'm in Virginia, but didn't learn about it until the 1990s. Never saw celebrations until mid to late 2000s.
...maybe because you both grew up in virginia????? js
@@speedtopia2013 in actuality…in certain parts of Virginia the E.P. didnt apply since it was under union control. They weren’t going to reenslave anyone, but slavery still legally exist
I learn so much from your videos . Thanks
I love that you take time to explain to white people what you're referring to.
Sadly, those who need to see it never tuned in, those that showed up were already tuned out
I grew up in West Virginia, and it wasn't until I moved to Texas that I had even heard of it. And of course it was from other white folks who, apparently didn't know the history. Thanks for teaching this white woman what it is really about!
Okay, but can we get a Junetini recipe??
We were taught that it took that long for news of the end of the war to reach TX
I'm not saying it was right. I'm just saying that's what they said.
It didn't make sense back then. But I'd already learned that school was not about being curuous. whatever answer they wanted I regurgitated. I just didn't want any trouble.
@@ludokerfluffle6232 If anyone has ever been to Washington DC and visited Capitol Hill, the US National Archives building is about a block from Congress. The 1942 USDA video *Hemp for Victory* was found in the Library of Congress in 1989 and has been officially listed in the US National Archives since 1990. There was a bill in Congress titled HR 3652, the *Hemp for Victory Act of 2019.*
Let's review: a video from 1942 was listed in the US National Archives in 1990, but didn't reach Congress (a block away) until 2019 (and still didn't become law because barely anyone has heard of it ).
Nothing makes sense because humans don't make sense.
We call ourselves a "free country" while we pay billions of tax dollars every year for police to wage war against our fellow Americans over the exact same "Marihuana" plant that was legalized to defend America during World War II, and video proof of this generations-old lie is on everyone's cellphones at an official government website but not even Senators have heard of it.
Dear Amber, I am now going out to buy my wooden shoes, let the peach cobbler elf know
You should try out for the Olympics, because those mental gymnastics were incredible.

I disagree with the celebration timeline. My mother (1923-2008), born and raised in Dallas until age 19 never heard of Juneteenth until she saw a poster in Berkeley CA announcing their 8th annual Juneteenth Celebration. This was on the late 90's.
