THIS STORY:
At 11:30 p.m., two young girls who lived in a small duplex heard people fighting inside an adjoining apartment. The girls knew the couple next door, a 23-year-old man named Willard Colwell and his fiancee, Rosemary Peterson, also 23. Willard’s car wasn’t there, but Rosemary’s was parked in her usual spot.
The yelling continued,
The girls knocked on the couple’s door and called out to Rosemary. They first heard a man shout that they “just had a fight.” Rosemary then screamed for help.
When they finally went inside, they were met with one of the bloodiest crime scenes ever investigated in Rockford.

Thank you Ron for bringing this case to light again. This was my sister. Rosemary was a beautiful, vibrant young girl and still missed by her family after all these years. Even to this day her siblings and other family members review & rehash that horrible event…looking for a break to lead us to Who brutally murdered her. We have made contact with detectives numerous times over the years and even recently but to no avail. Thank you for caring.

thanks Gloria. I am glad to help get the word out. It is disappointing to hear that the detectives don't arise you on status. Sound like it is forgotten by them...hmm..Surprising, because they solved the Tammy Tracy case on familial genetic DNA, which I have covered extensively.

"The police department here in Rockford are so busy now, that they can't get to every crime scene each night. They didn't answer the phones today. Present investigations are backed up. We are very defunded and crime ridden. It would have to be solved with a private source. Very sorry to say."
This is unacceptable. Have you reached out to the news media there? I saw they covered it a year ago. keep the pressure on, it's all about who has the squeaky wheel. the loudest.

@@FacesoftheForgotten Hi! This is Rosemary's niece. I had contacted the police department a couple of times last year to get any updated info and refer information to the police. They did inform me that they were able to retrieve partial DNA off of either the knife or the machete. I had asked them about possibly doing familial DNA, but the detective (the third one in an 8 week period) that got assigned to the case told me that they don't like to do that because it could potentially be messy. So they did put the partial DNA into CODIS, but it sits in there without a hit.

I am willing to meet family members that are able to come out to Rosemary's grave at Calvary tomorrow Monday or Tuesday to shoot a 5 minute update for my channel. This response from the Rockford Police Department is not acceptable. Crime solving is always messy! Let's let them know.
I don't see some of the comments here, and I am leaving for the southern states mid week (this week) for 6 weeks. Hope to get the word out now. This killer is most likely still alive and shuddering in his boots right now knowing about familial matching science thats going on all over the world..

🛑 Per Alice our Moderator: NO - ROSEMARY WAS NOT TOO YOUNG TO SERVE in VIETNAM -- The Marines and Navy stayed in there until 1975 to assist with civilians, guard U.S. property and assist with special forces.
Since she's a veteran, that wreath was probably left for her as part of the "Wreaths Across America" project.
Yes, Rosemary was a veteran. But wreath placed there by her a sibling. She’s definitely not forgotten. Her. mother & father are in graves close by.
That is terrible that someone got away with her Murder. That must make her family angry. Poor woman, rip.
Just because there was no forced entry doesn't necessarily mean she knew her murderer. 40 plus years ago you was probably more likely to forget to lock your door. A stalker could have been watching the commings and goings.
Probably somebody she knew. A stranger would not have yelled " We're having a fight". They would have run out of there quick. Someone she knew would have lingered.

It's infuriating. She probably went straight out of high school to Vietnam. Like around the fall of Saigon which fell in 1975. Who knows but she's a human being and deserves the best.
The Vietnam War was over when she got out of HS....probably 1975. She was just a year older than me. She was 25 when she died?
They need to reopen her case. If LE needs funds for genetic genealogist they should let the public know and have fundraiser. RIP Rosemary. May she and her family get justice. Thank you Ron.
This cold case should be reopened to find the person responsible for this brutal murder of Rosemary. The newest DNA technology can do wonders finding such people. RIP Rosemary.

I hear all the time “no sign of forced entry “. But think about it, someone knocks on your door and what do you do? You walk over and open it! Especially during that era, people didn’t necessarily think twice about it. So of course no forced entry. In no way blaming the victim, that’s just how it was and still is to a certain degree even now.
Such a terrible fate she didn’t deserve. My hope is that you drawing attention to this case will surely spur someone to solve her vicious murder. It is the very least she deserves. Thanks, Ron! She is not forgotten. 💜

I took that picture at her sister Tammy’s Wedding. She was a Great friend and a beautiful young woman. Our children should have grown up around each other. She should have had Grandchildren! I am sick of delays and excuses. Get the Murder Please!

1979. Her killer might still be out. If she doesn’t have any family left no one is speaking for her. Also, probably money is a factor. It costs a lot of money to do DNA testing. I would contribute to the fund !

This is a tragic story, poor Rosemary. Just an unimaginable death for this poor woman. It's beyond frustrating that this case sits and collects dust while all the advances have been made with DNA. Come on Rockford let's get this reopened! I was thinking also that since Rosemary was a veteran, the wonderful Wreaths Across America placed that at her grave. Heartbreaking.
Outrageous! A lovely young woman, served her country everything to live for. You are right, Ron, easily solvable, because I am sure the perpetrator did not stop there with that crime. Well done the neighbours for their quick actions. I am sure she must have relatives alive, it is time for her justice. Perhaps , put posters up around Rockford with that photo of her, reminding people of the crime! Might put a bit of pressure on the police, or remind them of the case as well. Then Rosemary will rest in peace.

Ron, what is that circular object in the ground about a foot above her grave? I’ve seen that around other graves as well, and I don’t know what it is.
It’s an upside down vase, you unscrew it, flip it over, and then put flowers in it, usually made of bronze or brass
