Drake - So Far Gone 10-Year Anniversary Review/Convo

- Опубликовано: 4 мар 2019
- Drake's So Far Gone mixtape was released 10 years ago. Many at the time didn't think Drake would go on to become the star he is today. The mixtape dropped on February 13, 2009, under Drake's label October's Very Own. Tracks like Best I Ever Had and Successful grew into huge hits and put Drake on the map.
In honor of its 10 year anniversary, Dead End Hip Hop looks back at Drake's So Far Gone mixtape and discuss it impacts on hip hop culture.

DEHH team to Myke: aye we gotta review this drake album...
Myke: DRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKEEE????????
Here before Myke trashes Aubrey’s whole existence!
You called it
My favorite pass time
Feefo seems like he's the only one that gives Drake a fair chance and is honest about whether he likes his music or not the others just straight up come across as hating and Drakes not even my 4th favorite artist in hip hop but when I see hating I'm gonna say something
@@sabihfaraz6732 so it's not at all possible that they just dont enjoy his music and persona?
Suit Up no it doesn’t come off that way. I honestly don’t think they listen to his music or they go into it with an already set opinion.
Remember when Drake didn't make Scorpion? Ah, the good ol' days
Scorpion is his best album and the best album of 2018.

Everybody saying Wayne, Jeezy, 50, etc pioneered mixtapes. What made So Far Gone special is that it ushered in a new era of mixtapes. That old mixtape format that Wayne and them used was simply rapping over other people's instrumentals and maybe a few songs that are original. So Far Gone was one of the first tapes in which it sounded like an album. Once that dropped it became an industry standard for an artist to drop that one album quality mixtape before signing. Drake's generation was arguably the generation in which an artist's mixtape was known to surpass his debut.
Facts
Feefo with the “li-li-li-like” and the “i-i-i-it”
joeistoodope lmfao he likes everything
Haha,... 21:25 - everyone trying to figure out when this album came out. Guys, it's the 10th anniversary.
Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!! Damn, you're right!
Will Rucker this man 2005!!! Like damn how old you gotta he lol
Myke c-town and shiting on Drake is my favorite synth pop duo.
Myke is so unapologetic about his opinion. like damn I wish I could rep for myself like Myke does. Nothing but respect keep up the good shit
Max Held facts
It's just a matter of not caring and saying it how you see it. It's fun, you should try it man. Hella freeing.
Kinda funny tho how Myke talked hardcore about his love for Degrassi haha
You definitely should. I know this comment is 3 years old so I hope you've learned to be more unapologetic about your opinion.
"10 year anniversary"
Myke: "what year did this come out?"
I think the sudden change in Drake's sound came from the fact that 808's was released the year before (I think). Kanye brought that sad sound to the mainstream and drake ran with it. That being said if it wasnt for the features and co signs i dont think this would have blown up like it did.
Yeah it wouldnt have blown up without the cosigns but that's part of the game
He was directly influenced by Ye and Cudi remember Drake was a cameo in Pursuit if Happiness
These r facts ur speaking lol Kanye even wrote "Find Your Love"
it definitely would not have for sure
Yea most importantly, 808s influenced 40’s production. If Drake didn’t have 40 his signature sound wouldn’t have existed
This is why I love early Weeknd and Travis Scott music. That night time atmospheric sound is amazing to me.
Mark Brunache check out 808s my guy
People miss the point. Rap went through a long period where most of the content that came out wasn't really stuff the everyday, regular person could relate to. Nobody was balling like Jay Z. Nobody was selling drugs like Jeezy. Nobody was as gully as Beanie Siegel. Nobody was living life like Uncle Luke and Too Short. Nobody was doing anything these rappers were rapping about and portraying in their videos. Yet we all flocked to it. Drake did the same thing Ye did. He started rapping about topics that the everyday guy could relate to. Relationship problems, trying to make it, bragging about what you got even though you really don't have much, getting women, trying to get women, problems with friends, etc. He was palatable. That's it. He was palatable and different and skilled enough and had a dope sound that capatilized off of the under ground rappers but a flow and subject matter that borrowed from the mainstream. He was palatable. That's what tends to make pop music. And dare I say, authentic.
To be fair you also had Kanye, cudi, cole and mac miller came out a bit afterwards. Drake was also always bragging about coming from nothing when he didn’t which makes him less relatable
This was done off J-prince finding him. Thats why he had so much access to Houstons rap scene. Even listen to Drakes sound out the time.
Cordney Stewart actually j prince hated him at first his son was the guy that really pushed him
S/O Myke, a true music lover. To anyone that can relate to open tabs of musical artists. Going further into the rabbit hole. ..
THIS IS LIKE 2011-2012 MYKE I LOVE IT!!! hes so hilarious!!! I cant stop laughing 🤣🤣🤣
I wouldn't call the project classic but it has classic hits that pushed Drake to the next level publicly and sonically. If someone were to say it is classic I wouldn't say they're wrong
@Romy Taylor I'm of this generation but the project overall doesn't have classic quality to me. Every other defining aspect of a classic album is there, but classics age like wine and this wasn't even supreme quality for its time in my opinion
Classic in the sense that it further solidified a new sound in hip hop, significantly
@@chrisjfox8715 of course
MegaSp SolarFlare I agree but I wouldn't call this a good project regardless of any sonic criteria, which is why it's not classic to me. I already said it has all the other classic requirements
It’s a classic
This bout to be comedy...
Y'all should do one for the SSLP since it turned 20 recently
Alish he re-released it with a few new songs
@@drainopium what are you talking? Only 2 songs are on sslp, the rest is totally new. Classic album forever. Listen to sslp ep, that ep has 4 new songs more.
Mike is my Spirit animal when it comes to Drake.
It’s obvious he doesn’t even listen to Drake music tho. Idk why he even participates in a Drake conversations. He’s not well versed
@@GHDiva They have reviewed all of Drake's album except "Thank me later ", so Myke did listened to all of these. The song that you need to hear to understand what Drake is all about is "Child's Play". In that song Aubrey is threatening to get a girl "back to the hood" if she won't act like His Majesty wants. In the same song he raps about not letting his girlfriend to use his car to go and get tampons. You need to be a total bitch boy to not let a girl to get tampons on her period. And you need to be a total scumbag to tell a girl that you will bring her back to the hood. No decent man would support this kind of behavior. So, Myke is just being a normal guy by saying that Drake is a bitch for lyrics like this. And if you are a woman and support this kind of stuff, you got a lot of self esteem issues.

I got kicked out morning lecture right before I got this notif 😂😂
Hey since when is this a classic?
Kaleb Ward fr they didn’t even title it a classic review😂
Kaleb Ward I think every major album critic recognizes this as a classic, for what it was. Like the boy or not this shit was it
@@104copyTHAT theneedledrop gave it a 5 out of 10 if you consider him a "major album critic"
I'm not even a big Lil Wayne fan, but his verse on Uptown was legendary
It's only legendary if you have poor taste in music.
There was a scene in Degrassi when Jimmy was rapping onstage. I'm assuming Mike forgot. I remember thinking how he should be a real rapper because he sounded too good for that to just be for one scene in a show. Then sometime later I heard this guy named "Drake" one day on the Last.fm app for the Xbox 360, singing Brand New, and I was like "holy shit!" when I realized it was him. Those were the days.
So Far Gone is so highly regarded but Comeback Season had so many bangers on it. We need that re-released at some point in the near future.
Not many people fuck wit comeback season
Damn, I'm glad you guys real went in depth on this shit and continued explaining how y'all felt. I'm with Mike that I was super confused, but I started to understand it a lot more as y'all went on. Really good discussion.
I also think Dipset was one of the mixtape pioneers especially from 02-05
Facts! Even their individual mixtapes were fire. Writer's Block 1-3 are some of my favorites
@@CompleteProducer84 OMS Joe.!
The Swail but that’s a group vs 1 man! Wayne is the reason mixtapes was 🔥🔥🔥
@@Skullhead550 They also brought up the squad up mixtapes in the argument which was basically a group effort and that was before Wayne started dropping the prefix, suffix, dedication 1 and 04, 05 mixtape Wayne so it's a fair comparison.
Al Simmons if you say so, mixtape weezy still way better than dipper as a whole
It was something different to have a rapper/singer who I could relate to in regards to situations with female is what drew me in initially... I thought his first mixtape was also a fresh take from the gangster rap, Southern, and East coast rap I grew up on...
This mixtape sounded amazing back in 09. I was about to be a freshman in high school, hanging out with my old friends smoking bud, and thought I was in love with my girlfriend at the time lmao smh. Listening to it again just brings back the memories of being 14/15 years old, but it def sounds dated now. Feel bad for the fans that just heard this mixtape for the first time. You had to be there when it first dropped to understand the feeling. I respect Myke's opinion too, if I were his age at the time it dropped, I probably wouldn't like this shit either lmao
Kuzco Exactly. If you didn’t live with it, you’ll probably never be able to relate.
So far gone isn’t dated by today’s standards especially best I ever had

I love Drake he has a big impact on stretching my butthole too.
So far gone didnt have shit on hip hop. Judt a generic tape. Nothin special.
You gone talk about impact and not mention Big Soulja????!?!?
I'll let that fly (i suppose) but classic i wont allow lol i'm happy with solid. Solid project? Sure. Im alright with that lol
Can we just not like this lack luster rapper without y’all defending his every move lol, it’s not that deep
Waitin for that Good Kid Maad City classic review

That Alzheimer's hitting hard.
this is a classic to me and it brought a lot of things that are trending today.
This was the best album of 2009
better then man on the moon tho?
I think it’s second behind Man on the moon
absolutely. wasn’t a great year for music tho tbh
I liked So Far Gone a lot back then as well, but it aged terribly. I can't listen to it now without cringing. It's still a classic mixtape though, just because of the impact that it had.
So Far Gone is a descendent of 808s I think.
drake said he started making music because of 808
earlyman sweatshirt 🤦🏾♂️ y’all be gassing I swear straight Cappin. He was rappin and making music before 808s so how tf is this possible? Y’all gotta stop making shit up.
Ty Jones k what he actually said was that 808’s influenced his style to show more vulnerability and sing
earlyman sweatshirt drake put put fire tapes since 06, but 808s influenced him to do something different
nightfall Take Care is the descendant of 808s
I want Myke to listen to Comeback Season and Room for improvement so bad! He should review them on his channel too
As a Dj Screw fan, a Wayne fan, and a RnB fan this tape was perfect for me but I can understand Myke not liking it.
I’m one of the few people who don’t see the hype in this album. I like a few songs but as a whole it’s just ok to me but i understand the importance of this project to drake
F.L.O.W. It’s very important to me because the night I met Drake we were listening to this as he told me to bend over and spread my cheeks. I was nervous at first but the pain quickly turned to pleasure.

"He seems so far gone"😂😂😂😂
It’s no classic album since he started finding his sound after No Far Gone. It’s memorable that a mixtape got this much buzz from someone so random in 2009. It was good for his time but it doesn’t hold up from his more later work.
I fucked hard with album. I remember where I was at when I first heard this. In college I listened to it no fn stop. He was the first rapper that I personally felt that I could relate to.
Beezy made some great points . Can always expect that when i click on a dehh video
I knew that he was from degrassi and that's why I liked it more because most TV rapper try to hard and are wack and I never felt like Drake was wack..... I always thought he was dope personally
Drake patterned his honesty in his lyrics after Phonte
2009 was a dope year for hip hop
Which great albums were released 2009 ? Always thought like hip-hop was in a bit of a slump back then
2011-13 was the best time period for modern shit imo. Nothing was the same, Good Kid M.a.a.d City, Oxymoron, long live A$AP, etc
Besides Kanye Drake was probably one of the few people who made me really enjoy non-gangsta rap. There are only a few tracks on this mixtape that I would skip.
Y'all should do some albums from 99 and 09
The warm up j Coles mixtape, slim shady, man on the moon, the block is hot, and the blueprint 3
I remember watch Drake rap on Degrassi and cackling like a jackass. When he started rapping "for real" I though that show got his head gassed up.
So far gone is Drake's best project PERIOD.
If Ken really care enough to go watch Degrassi every single season is on RUclips for free 😭😭
This album was big because at the time it was different and Wayne was on fire at the time and anything Wayne did at the time moved the culture. So with the Wayne co-sign it made people listen. Remember Wayne never really co-signed anyone like he did drake. And I guess you can say nicki too and look at their level of success
I look at Camp by Childish Gambino the same way I look at So Far Gone by Drake. It was dope for it's time but has aged very badly and is WAAY too corny. Though I wasnt really Drake fan at the time while still being a HUGE Gambino fan.
Also, If Your Reading This It's Too Late is his best PERIOD. Those beats switches through out the project are so great. Not Rodeo level cinematically, but they give a great vibe. Take Care is too damn long imo and feels bloated compared to how lean IYRTITL feels.
Y’all should’ve put the old intro in here lol
I would love to see y’all discuss Drakes 2nd mixtape “Comeback Season”. I can already hear Mike not fucking with it haha but would be interesting to get y’alls take on it.
Drake came off as Cool with some clever bars and had the Women in their feelings so he got a pass for a while
I just resubscribed! Finally! The most unbiased review yet. Finally have drake the credit the deserved. But Mike is too hilarious, I’m always down for some mike slander lmao😂😂😂
Resubscribed? What happened?? Hahaha
Rod vs. Myke is the best shit ever!!!
The warm up was better 🤷🏾♂️
No
I learned about drake on the stuntin track on Wayne's dedication 3.
Godamnit, y'all doing cliffhangers now?? 😭
Feefo: "But does it still suck?"
Myke: "YESS!"
😂😂😂😂
Ken's beard looks awesome.
Also had Omarion on the Bria's Interlude too
As a Mixtape it was cool for it's time for sure. A lot of variety sonically. Lyrically he actually sounded like he cared about his rhymes still lol.
This and 808s & Heartbreak shaped the sound of 2010s mainstream pop-rap. Some of it didn’t age well (just like 808s) but it’s a classic without a doubt.
Huh??? 808s has aged well.
Need that second part
I came here for Myke to go Pusha on Drake
2009 Was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯 Especially Tha climate of music during that time
I always laugh inside when dudes call Drake corny for raping about relationships from a vulnerable perspective as opposed to the typical hyper masculine perspective. Because when I speak to those guy's girls they can be just as corny as they accuse Drake of being. Just behind closed doors where it's safe I guess. Dudes want you to believe that their pimp hand is way strong 100% of the time.lol
What are you doing talking to other guy's girls? This is why I can't respect people who take drake seriously.
@@IllDawgable If you are perpetrating a fraud and your girl/ex girl exposes you, how is that my fault????? Or Drake's fault lol. Maybe you assume when I said "...talking to these dudes girls..." you thought I meant romantically or while they were still involved. That only happened sometimes 🤣. MOST of the time, it was a platonic female friend telling me the truth about a dude who was frontin'. And often I would advise her to give the guy some grace because I know how hard it is for some dudes to be real with themselves. And I would chastise them for telling me too much about a guy on occasion cause that's a violation of his trust if he told her something in confidence. But as a MAN, you need to be mad at yourself for making something a fact instead of judging anyone else about how they handle that fact. Not huge a Drake fan by the way. Used to be but haven't downloaded/purchased a album since "Nothing was the Same"
@@3d1k3 Facts bro, I think Drake can be too sappy and bitchy sometimes but I don’t think he’s corny. Some of these “street” niggas that always have to be the hardest force in the room (DaBaby, 42 Dugg, Pooh Shiesty) gets cornier to me than Drake just being honest bout himself and his lifestyle.

y'all should review the Bastard Mixtape when that turns 10.
Mixtapes most definitely were a thing when 50 was poppin'. Believe that! Whole G-Unit had that locked down.
This was around the time elzhi dropped " The Preface " album. .. classic
the first time I heard about drake was back in 2005 via MySpace and whats crazy is we were friends for a good 2 years and never knew this nigga rapped. then I started hearing this track "Special" and "thrill is gone". I hit em up and asked If this was his music he said yeah you fuckn wit it I was bro this is dope. fast forward he sent me a link to room improvement then i started to hear tracks wit him and lil wayne, "I can take your girl" and "Brand New" the original version and the version with lil wayne. We stayed in contact with each other then the next thing I know this nigga was on TV then got signed.
It's there tho Beezy.
I liked Drake mix tape before the album but when I bought the album it was sounding mostly R&B and not much rapping. So I was like, yeah this Drake guy is not for me I tried to give him a chance though.
I remember Myke saying in a old review (can’t remember which) he said this album was a classic BUT he didn’t like it
Fefo buggin. Breh 50 Cent was doing all that before Wayne. If anything Wayne copied his format and took it further which is what youre supposed to do.
Yea I agree
Feefo specifically clarified that 50 did it before Wayne. His point was that Wayne is the one that made it pop off much more than 50 did
