Once my dentist said I had 7 cavities, so instead of getting them filled I decided not to go back for 2 years, and somehow ALL of them magically disappeared...
+tonyfalca Had the same thing happen to me when I was 7 years old. Told my parents I had 7 cavities and needed serious orthodontic work. 2 years later I had 1 minor cavity filled. My parents were smart enough to see through his crap.
+tonyfalca I had an herb related doctor, she relied on herb medicines and zen shit. Her building later got flooded, rebuilt, then burnt. Not to mention the herbs didn't help at all, and some made me sick
+tonyfalca Been to the dentist not once in 12 years, I recently went and have one cavity and another tooth with extremely high calcification (read dental calculus or tartar) The tartar was easy to remove but I need to 'go back to have a filling'...

DannyPsyche yes a mechanic, but how could a dentist see their own mouth with as much attention to detail as someone else. But I do agree that having a dentist be the undercover patient would help explain a lot more.
Snow Flake Most of the people here have no idea what is good for them. According to them every dentist is just trying to make money. They have no idea that the insurance companies want proof before they will pay for treatment. Just play the insurance game and do the best you can. There is nothing wrong with doing preventive care.
We need government oversight of the dental industry, the same as the medical industry. Thank you for having the courage to do this program about dentists & dentist prices.
This makes me so grateful for my dentist. My dentist always compliments how well I take care of my teeth. I have had one procedure done & that's bc I requested it and he never pressured me into getting the procedure until I was ready.
Same, my dentist always compliments how well I take care of my teeth. He's super chilled and funny to talk to aswell. It's a ashame people in the comment section are degrading 'most ' dentist as being scamers when there not. This video doesn't do dentist justice :(
When I was 11 I smashed my face off an air hockey table and pushed up my gums on one of my teeth. My dentist told my mom I could get surgery to fix the gum, but in a few years my gums would be that high anyway. The only procedure I’ve ever had done was my wisdom teeth getting removed after I’d requested it
@@Zen_Zen_Zense maybe you don’t get work done because your teeth are actually good . Go see low income patients and you’ll see the difference . A lot of treatment options for them are not optimal because of cost issues . Sometimes it’s not worth the treatment if the cost is too great and there’s a chance the tooth will not be able to be saved
When I was a kid my father suspected that our dentist was drilling holes in our teeth just to make money. So we stopped going there. Two years later we were watching the local news when a picture of the old dentist's office popped up. The door opened and the dentist came out wearing handcuffs and he was under arrest. Guess what for? Doing unnecessary dental work on his patients.
This was standard procedure in Britain. I had a deciduous tooth as an adult. The dentist X-rayed it to see if there was an un-erupted permanent tooth underneath. There wasn't. Hence the milk tooth still being there. A perfectly healthy tooth, & essential for the dental arch & occlusion. What did he do? He ripped it out anyway. His reasoning? It would help the (absent) permanent tooth to come through. Result? My dental arch & occlusion has been destroyed. But never mind. He profited from his work. That's all that mattered.
Tell me about it! I’m going to be so strict with my money when it comes to any business or service. This show has REALLY opened my eyes. I knew society was messed up but I didn’t know that almost everything around had some kind of deception going on or influences on how to make more money AKA greed.
A dentist told my spouse, who never had a cavity, that he had two cavities and recommended filling them. Scared of needles, he decided to wait for symptoms and did nothing. 9 years later, he still has no cavities. Be wary.
@@felipegarcia487 that why I don’t understand why dentist fill superficial cavities when they have a strong chance at fixing themselves in the long run.
@@thephilosopher5799 If left unchecked, the cavity will grow larger and larger until the tooth is nothing but a literal shell and pieces of the corners will start crumbling apart, potential for infection increases because food gets stuck in the deep cavity, etc.
In my early 30's, I now know that my childhood dentist permanently destroyed my newly formed permanent teeth. Between 11-14 he did over 20+ fillings at a considerable amount of pain to me. My mother never questioned him, never saught out a second opinion and had a massive state funded dental plan. He drove a Porsche, that at the time I thought was really cool, now I realize that my mother's plan was paying for it. So freaking mad. Those teeth should have lasted 40-50 years and now they are nearly all mutilated. I feel furious and violated when I think about it.
One dentist says you have a cavity and need a filling or root canal and another dentist sees no cavities! WTH??! how many painful fillings have people endured for cavities that they don't have!? This is scandalous and beyond terrible!
I went to dentist who says I had to have 8 fillings done. I went to another dentist who checked my teeth and said I had NO cavities. I don't trust dentists at all.

The most depressing thing here is that even those professional organizations are not willing to face the problems or even face the journalist's questions.
Most times it's because they have written instruction not to talk to the media. There is usually a PR person who handles public affairs. A lot of times PR wont talk to people like this because they know the media is just trying to skew certain things to make them look bad on purpose so its best in their interest to keep quiet. They don't have to speak with reporters at all and are usually advised against it. I was in the medical field for 8 years and plenty of people tried to shame our practice just because they werent happy with treatment, no one can force you to do any treatment, you have every option to walk away if you don't like it
They think they are "protecting" the dental profession when what they are doing is allowing the crooks to take it over at the expense of the few remaining legitimate dentists. To get licensed as a dentist, one must take Dental Board Exams. A big part of these exams is to make a treatment plan for a patient. The patient's age, finances, line of work, interests, etc are presented and every prospective dentist must write up an acceptable treatment plan for this patient. With say 100 prospects taking this Board exam, there may be two or maximum THREE variations of treatment plan. One is the best, one may be acceptable, and one may not be so good because it doesn't fit the patient, the conditions, or all the above. There is NO ANSWER to correspond with DENTISTRY AS AN "ART"! The answers and reasoning given by the two supposed neutral experts here were total BS! Dentistry is more BLACK & WHITE than most other professions. A tooth either needs work or it does not. The type of work needed should fit the work already present in the mouth unless an entire full mouth rehabilitation is needed. This is RARE. A minimally invasive approach should be taken whenever possible. Eliminating decay and disease come first. Restorations for cosmetic reasons are a patient's choice but are not necessary unless a patient wants to improve his or her appearance and is willing to put up with the extra work and cost over the years. Advised consent would be nice. Too many dentists are doing too much unnecessary work to drum up extra business and income for themselves with no regard for the dental health of their patients. In many cases this could be considered assault or malpractice or both. This is so rampant that dental organizations now make excuses for their members instead of getting together to clean up their act and restore dentistry to the noble profession it once was.
If that's true, doesn't it sound very wrong? An auto mechanic does work he shouldn't but someone working on your teeth does work they shouldn't. Which shoulds worse?
So true. I know preventative dentistry is ideal in theory, but with so many con artists, I just go when it hurts. And I tell THEM which tooth needs treating. Every single time, they say other teeth need expensive stuff. I just say "I can't afford those right now. I will come back next month". I don't go back. Lo and behold; there's never anything wrong with those other teeth. I needed to visit the dentist this year, and that was the first time in seven years.
I have a huge fear of dentist from several horror experiences. I finally took my son at age 8. They said he had one cavity and we made arrangements to return the following week for the "pediatric" dentist to do the work. She said he needed a ROOT canal! Then they took us to an enclosed room, my son would be put into a pappos to tie him down and I couldn't be in the room! My gut reaction was to RUN! And so we did! He NEVER complained about pain in his teeth, and I didn't want him to have a horror experience. He's 18 now and no cavities so far. Dentistry is a quakery business!
The best dentist story i have is a great one. My aunt went to the dentist and he took x-rays and come back in the room and told her he was going to have to pull 4 of her teeth. The only problem is she has false teeth lol. She had just went in to have two of her false teeth fixed lol. I love that story. So you know thay did not even check her file.
That's hilarious! That would be a good comedy bit for a TV show. "My aunt went to the dentist and he took x-rays and come back in the room and told her he was going to have to pull 4 of her teeth. The only problem is she has false teeth."
Lolz..... my dentist just said the same thing. He has to pull out my four teeth cause there is a hole in one wisdom teeth. I told him straight up, “better not touch my other three!!” I got a plan that cost About $4000.00 which am not going to even look at it. I only need to pull that one teeth out.
Mine were all growing in slanted, scraping against the inside of my cheeks and my dentist would say every time I went for a checkup “we’ll need to do something about the wisdom teeth” but he never pulled them or referred me to an oral surgeon. A few years later, when I was an adult and no longer covered by my father’s Blue Cross plan, they all started hurting and eventually all of them broke.
I have a decayed upper left wisdom tooth (probably have had it like that for years without realizing it cause a chunk of the tooth broke off several years ago and I suspect the tooth may have rotted from the inside-out). There's absolutely no pain or pressure coming from the tooth and I am brushing my teeth and using saltwater rinses everyday to keep my teeth clean and free of harmful bacteria. I haven't gone to the dentist in years but when I do go back eventually I'll have my upper left wisdom tooth extracted for my convenience but I'm not too worried about it right now as long as I'm feeling no pain from it, I've had this bad tooth for sooo long already and have had absolutely no pain or sensitivity coming from it even though part of the tooth has broken off; but I'm still diligently making sure to keep it clean and free of food through brushing and saltwater rinsing regardless :)
@Purple people In my head The surrounding teeth were breaking because you didn't have your wisdom teeth taken out and your jaw was too crowded. Not much wisdom on your part.
Very good content. I experienced this first hand this year. Dentist can be extremely nice during checkups. One can easily overlook that the work recommended by them is actually needed or not. Even if your dental plan pays for most of it…. Don’t forget that the teeth are yours. Why would anyone want unnecessary drilling and remove good enamel for no reason. The more you go to dentist, THE MORE YOU NEED TO GO TO DENTIST. Dentists can be con artists.
Is price tag the only thing? How about lack of work ethic, dishonesty, breaching of Hippocrates oath of Do No Harm, intentional damage to the healthy tissue for personal financial gain? I’m amazed of people’s way of thinking.. Let’s do the LASIK on a person with healthy eyes and 20/20 vision, what does it matter that reading up close will be impaired? There’s so much selection of a good quality reading glasses - here we go, the “problem is fixed”. When people don’t know their rights, don’t find them out for themselves and blindly trust those whose interest is not in public health but rather in money profit, then it’s a piece of cake to manipulate and control these individuals. They’ll gladly pay for it and even thank for it.
Petra Gallerno That’s what I thought. People are ok to destroy their healthy teeth if they have money? It doesn’t matter whether you have the money or not. It’s the question whether you need the treatment or not. It’s as easy as that. I guess people don’t understand that they only get one healthy set of teeth.
At age 31 a dentist recommended considerable work and warned that if I did nothing, all my teeth would fall out by the time I hit 50. Now, at 68, I not only still have them all, but semi-annual checkups result in 15 minutes of cleaning. No issues. Ever. Very blessed for having good teeth. As Yogi Berra noted, predictions are very difficult - especially about the future.
X-rays do not tell us everything we need to know. If your dentist is not checking inside your mouth , then it is not an exam and they should not be charging for it.
I had a dentist tell me I needed a tooth pulled and a tooth implant because I still had a baby tooth and no replacement adult tooth. Went to another dentist and he looked at me like I was crazy, I had already lost all my baby teeth and had all my adult teeth.

I used to work in a dental office for 7 years and I can confidently say that majority of dentist only care about money. Profits is of the utmost importance.
I hear most dentists treat they're dental assistants horribly as well. I've actually been in the chair when a dentist has talked down to his assistant. I felt really awkward in that situation. It seems that many new dentists are in the profession just solely for the money and don't really care for the patients and his/her employees. Not saying all dentists are bad, but many this day and age are.
The same can be said for any privatized medical field. I've worked at many vet clinics as a Registered tech, and some clinics are really shady. End of the day it's a business. Shop around.
Steph K I’m 67 and I’ve seen our society evolve into such money hungry and dishonest practices in EVERY field of business. Mostly in the last 25 years. This is a sign of a third world society where everyone is taken advantage of and scams, insurance fraud and bribes are the norm.
I started going to the dentist regularly only in my 20s because my mom always thought dentists would rip us off. Luckily my dentist is amazing and honest. I found out I had no cavities and my wisdom teeth do not need to be removed! I’m super grateful as I didn’t go to the dentist for +15 years 🥺
It’s really hard to find a good dentist who genuinely cares about the patient, and not the money. When I first moved to a new area, I went to a dentist who claimed that I needed 3 root canals, and a new bridge. It didn’t sound right so I went to get a second opinion at a different practice. That dentist examined my teeth and told me that all i needed were fillings, and that my bridge was fine. He was even trying to save me money by while making my treatment plan! So blessed and glad that I found his practice, it’s now my new go-to🦷😷
Look out I had the same scenario and once they get your trust they will rob your wallet. I don’t trust any healthcare provider. The United States is loaded with thieves.
First thing they teach us at Dentistry school and pretty much every semester is that you should always put the patient’s needs and satisfaction before yourself or anything and definitely always put into consideration that not everyone can afford expensive treatments
@Spenser Roger Yeah, I found that really problematic. I mean there really is NO justification for a variation in pricing like that. In addition, I think the fact that no one would come on camera at the end to discuss what's really going on and why there is such wide variation is enough to tell me all I need to know, which is basically that as the patient/customer, we are at the mercy of the dentist to know what is truly the case and what is not in terms of dental work. It's pretty scary that there is such a lack of consistency. The fact that this segment left us with very little answers to this very real problem is also somewhat unsettling.
I think you mean defend the fraud. All the profession needs is honesty with patients. If the dentist has poor enough business management skills that they can't make ends meet without overcharging for unnecessary and often mutilating procedures, then like any other business they must fail, just as any other business cannot just defraud customers to make more money. However in this particular case, I noticed something familiar about the demeanor of this woman. She reminded me very much of several immoral people I've met over the years in different professions, who have no regard for fellow human beings. I wish that in the short space of a sentence or two that I could extensively elaborate on the similarities but briefly a few commonalities are the person talks at you not to you, only long enough to scratch the surface of a question and then proceed on steering a conversation towards giving you the impression that they are beyond question and vaguely altruistic. Many of them also seem to gravitate towards manic depressive prescription drugs, as if their conscience keeps trying to interfere with their agenda and they will get very nasty very quickly if you question anything they say beyond a superficial level, no matter how polite and innocent your exchange with them was.
Annie Banana Im currently in the Air Force I wonder if military (on base) dentistry would be more truthful, I imagine they wouldn't have as much to lose or gain compared to privately owned dentist associations? Also if your base doesn't offer certain dental options like braces, fillings, etc. you will ultimately pay out of pocket for an civilian dentist... finding out the hard way $$$mh.
You took the words right out....I've noticed reports for fraud have shot up so high after COVID. Where medicine is concerned, I've learned the type of insurance you have is how you get treated. I saw a documentary which reported that those with public insurance can't schedule an appointment for months....by then, there are often folks that have serious issues. That's really scary.
Trust no one. Professionals are just like any other people. They are there to make money. If you encounter any type of scammer, you should at the very least write a review so other people can avoid that scammer.
Dental assistant here, a good way to stay safe is 1. Stay current on cleanings, know where your health is 2. Ask around, get a dentist other people have been satisfied with 3. Get second opinions on treatment you are unsure about
The problem is Procedure like filling doesn’t take long unless there are many cavities. Like in my last visit, I was told I have cavity and they just did it right away. I was skeptical because I brush twice a day, water floss and string floss every night. But I did it anyway. Now, I’m regretting that I said yes.
Deep cleaning where they have to get around and beneath your gum can cost that much, plus you get shots for numbing. but regular cleaning should be around 150 dollar. at least in the US
It's called Scaling and Root Planning (SRP). The patient has periodontal disease and sub gingival calculus with excessive pocket depths, otherwise she wouldn't need a "deep cleaning" SRP. These are split into 2 appointments usually because it requires a lot of work/time to remove those deposits and usually requires anesthetic.
I love my dentist. I told him I wanted braces and he told me " don't waste your money on a slight over bite."I just go in to clean my teeth and have him check my teeth. 1 hr tops...covered by insurance.

Dont need that. A small investment in learning dentistry yourself will help you. Dentist school is more so business training than actual anatomy. The anatomy stuff is easy and you can just learn the basics. Also, simply practice good hygiene. Dentists dont reccomend this, but only go to them when youe tooth genuinely hurts or when you notice that you have a problem that cannot be resolved by brushing your teeth.
I live in NY. 14 years ago when I was a teen I remember my dentist used to schedule fillings like every two weeks. Filling over fillings, she claimed I had Cavities on cavities. And he proceeded to dismiss me. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of these docs. and my parents didn't bother to follow up or perhaps sue lol
I want to the doctor once for a big hole in my tooth, they said I would have to come in like 5 different times to get it filled and I would have to wear a tooth protector for a month or two. So I didn’t except . Then over the summer I want to Turkey on vacation and want to the dentist there. the dentist literarily filled the hole in 10 minutes and my tooth is good to this day.
When you "want" to the dentist once for a big hole in your toof and were told it wold require 5 visits to "get it filled" I suspect you did not understand what was being suggested.Different languages definitely present communication issues. Remember it likely took years of neglect to create such a situation. Then you went to a supposedly competent dentist in Turkey that literally filled the hole in 10 minutes. It has been about a year since your original post. I would highly suspect you have had significant problems with this tooth and likely had this toof removed by a great dentist in Turkey that you trust. . If it was a molar tooth I would suspect there are still root fragments remaining in your jaw after attempts were made to remove the infected toof with a vice grip.
I think even the NHS in the UK seems better than Canada. The government pays half the cost, but dentists only ever recommend the minimum, so usually only £20 or £50 every 6 months :-)
+Skyler Rich They get paid per thing they do e.g. 2 crowns would be band 3 at £233 X 2 for each crown. The dentist would get paid double this so around £932 - they do have an incentive but they don't generally rip people off because they are that busy that they can make the same money doing general checkups. The band jumps you pay are a bit odd band 1 is £20, then 2 is £55 then 3 is around £235. Emergency treatment is always £20. There are a few things that are cheaper private such as white fillings as these are around £70 or would be band 3, but the dentist would always tell you this as all NHS dentists are also private. You also need to be dentally fit to join the scheme, so dentists do make a lot out of helping people register. There are some exclusively private dentists and dental insurance is available but it's generally not worth it as they have low caps on them.
***** Its all about humanity, but at least they aren't ripping off people by doing useless operations, I am far more concerned of that than going to dentist as pain occurs. Also if they don't do their job correctly e.g being lazy workers, we can straight up sue them. Wouldn't call it fail system
About 10 years ago,.I had a dentist tell me I had 4 cavities and needed 4 crowns and a night guard. I went to a recommended dentist from a relative and only had 1 cavity! Total cost $15.00!! I saved $3000
That doesn’t mean the first dentist was scamming you. Your second dentist may just have been more conservative and trying a wait and see approach while the first probably saw small cavities that he felt would inevitably get larger. For people with excellent hygiene, a more conservative approach may be fine. For people with poorer dental hygiene, a more aggressive approach could be good to fill the cavity before a root canal is necessary.
Please go to medical school for 8-12+ years and then tell me if you feel the same way. Otherwise shush. Those who are not in the medical profession should not comment on a doctors practice, there is actually such a thing as a 'second opinion' for a reason, one doctor might catch what another misses or they might recommend lesser treatment, but they always have to give a solid medical analysis as to why, you can't just make up tx for no damn reason, it's against the hippocratic oath.yes there are dirty doctors out there, but don't say that there is no such thing as a medical interpretation when there actually is
@@romantic_hippie When the difference in opinions could mean hundreds to thousands of dollars, expert opinions should be more consistent. To tell someone they can't have an opinion on a lack of consistency when it affects them just because they didn't go to med school is ridiculous.
@@romantic_hippie I'm not in the medical field but I'm glad to see some sense here. Dentistry is an interesting one because, like that one Dr. said, there CAN be a perverse profit motive. I'm generalizing, but when most people have someone rooting around in their mouth with a light in their eyes they're more suggestible. There might be signs of problems developing in the future and some dentists may be more aggressive in their treatment plans. I think there needs to be some more oversight regarding the 'cosmetic' aspects of it.
Yellow Penguin Yeah, but there should be a system where they are aware of the cost and say we can do X and it’s covered or we can do Y but it’ll cost you more out of pocket. It seemed like the dentists in this video weren’t as up front about telling the patient about their options and the cost differences between those options
Yes, I agree that every dentist should provide you with possible choices instead of pushing for the most expensive one. Getting a second and third opinion also costs considerable amount of money. I don't know about Canada, but in my country its about 20 EUR for a visit and then it can get up to 35 EUR for an X-ray scan. Visit three doctors - and you have lost 150 EUR already. I got lucky with an honest dentist - she wasn't even afraid to correct herself. At first check, she said I might need to replace a filling, but then she did more in-depth checking and told that the filling is actually strong, it just requires some polishing to look white and clean again.

Why are you assuming that they are trying to scam her? An expert tells you they aren't. But you know better? Isn't it possible that perhaps different dentists can have different, equally valid opinions regarding treatment plans? Or maybe you didn't put much thought into your comment. For your sake, I'll go with that explanation.
Some of them are just telling you from a variety of procedures they can perform on you. It is up to you, the patient, to choose which ones you want your dentist to perform. It's not like they're forcing it on you.
Amir Hedayati But some pressure you to do it right now and some say you might need it in the future but not now. It's a big difference. It happened to me.
When my dad was young every time he would go to the dentist they would say he has cavities and would drill his teeth with no anesthesia or numbing shots. About 5 years after they stopped going the dentist got charged with fraud and died in jail of a heart attack
This makes me wonder. When I was 21 I got a great check up. No cavities. Wisdom teeth came in straight. No issues. Two years later, I knew I had a cavity. Went to the dentist and ended up with fillings in almost every tooth. Took a month to get all the work done. Twice a week I got numbed and gassed, drilled and filled... How I went from zero cavities to more than two dozen in less than two years (with the same great hygiene that I've always practiced) always baffled me. Now I wonder... My teeth are ruined. I need all of the fillings replaced. I had perfect teeth until that dentist. From now on, I'm getting a second opinion.
+Pepper Conchobhar Same here! Except it was when I was younger, maybe 19ish. I had a number of cavities filled in a couple days. I decided to have them all done as quick as possible. Come to think of it, my childhood dentist did the same thing. Lots of cavities, lots of fillings. I never questioned the two dentist because I'm not the greatest at keeping my teeth cleaned and I eat a lot of sweets, drink lots of soda, etc. Now after watching this, I wish I would have gotten second opinions before I had all this work done to my teeth. Noe my teeth look metalic on the bottoms. I know I had a few cavities and they were probably right, but I don't think I had as many as they told me.
Pepper Conchobhar same happened to me. I felt like the more I went to the dentist the more they told me was wrong. And I brush and floss regularly. Now I'm too bothered to even go when I know I have a cavity because it's so damn expensive and they never address the issue I know needs fixing they do other things first.
That almost happened to me in Hopkington Massachusetts with Dr. Joe Menna but I could smell a rat. I actually had no cavities. Also when I was 12 a dentist pulled 4 of my 6 year molars even tho only one was decayed. They are just horrible men these 2.
It seems the whole damn world has turned into a bunch of crooks.! Is it safe to do anything anymore in modern times.? You can't even buy a stick of chewing gum without getting robbed..

@@rogermichou8654 Amen, I have dental problems and feel like dentists are just making a quick buck at my suffering...I tell God to please take my life early because I don't like the pain :[
As a dental auxiliary for nearly 40 years (8 years assistant, 30 + years as a hygienist, now retired) I worked for 3 dentists who were amazingly honest. I know there are some real shysters out there. I wouldn't work for a criminal. Sadly there's way too many dentists for the population and they upsell in order to make a living and pay off monstrous school bills. Thanks to Dr. Dale Martin, Dr. Ian Pung and Dr. Craig Smith for being the best and most honest people for the job of dentistry and letting employees work in an environment of honesty with our patients!!!
I’ve been told that my kid needed like four fillings. Had a second opinion Lies he didn’t have not one cavity. Always get a second opinion. Trust your gut if you feel no pain then don’t do it.
Just cuz you have no pain dosen't mean there is a cavity . Cavities can be prevented before they even become painful or larger . Caries can be in the enamel or the dentin and not hurt
Just because you don’t feel pain doesn’t mean nothing is wrong. With teeth, once you feel pain, the issue has reached the NERVE and at that point you’re going to need more treatment than you would have originally needed.
This makes me wonder. My poor kid has had 4 or 5 fillings and 1 root canal. We're religious about caring for her teeth but her dentist insisted it was due to her being premature and having weak emenal on her baby teeth. I'm thinking we should get a second opinion 🤔
What my dental ethics professor said was that the CBC marketplace approached him to do the interview for this, but they were disappointed when mainly good things were mentioned. They couldn't get the "juicy" story out of him. He told the class that CBC marketplace only approached dentists with terrible reviews and many complaints.
When I was a teen my mom took me to a dentist for a regular cleaning, that dentist told her I had bone disease and that I would lose all my teeth by the time I was 21 if he didnt give me a "deep cleaning". He told my mom she could pay with her credit card....only 3,000. Needless to say my mom got a different opinion and they did not mention any issue. I'm 31....my teeth are fine.
Because Dentist's knows best. Thats why. Im a Dentistryy student and I would say that I have encountered teens that have a poor oral hygiene. Deep calculus on their teeth and really needs cleaning beacause if not, it will cause periodontal disease that might destroy the jaw bone. It really depends, luckily for you, must be very terified so you opted for a good oral hygiene and made the situation of ur teeth better. Its very difficult to explain but I hope u understood my point
I wish we had more Canadian shows. Even though they seem low budget they still seem high quality. Dragon's Den is simple and very cool and so is Marketplace.
A dentist once told me I had a cavity and needed a filling. Having never had a cavity and being a twice-daily brusher for over 20 years, I was surprised. So I went to another dentist for a second opinion. Turns out my hunch was right, and I didn’t have any cavities at all. Not only did they try to get me to pay significantly more than I needed to, but even more alarmingly, I would have undergone an unnecessary medical procedure. The unethicality of this is so high that it should be illegal. Would you agree to letting me drill a hole in your perfectly good tooth just to refill it and charge you hundreds of dollars? What, no takers?!
Previous dentist I went to clearly and rudely shamed me for my cavities when I was 12. She said “WOW I have never seen someone with THIS many cavities your age!!” She said it with this judgmental and rude tone. They were very harsh with their words AND the treatment. Even though they know I have anxiety and struggle with creating good habits. I never went back.
The one woman just sounds like she doesn't want to speak out against another dentist. To me, drilling into a perfectly healthy tooth sounds like a very big deal!
As a Dental Assistant I can tell you this is common practice. I worked with a woman in a dental office for children. Teeth have 5 surfaces. If a child had a cavity on 2 surfaces she would automatically open the entire baby (primary) tooth, do a pulpectomy , "root canal" so to speak and charge the maximum amount to medicare. I always use to wish it was her kids in the chair. Another dentist use to tell her patients that a mobile tooth can be fixed with a root canal. I have worked with honest amazing dentist who would never touch a tooth unless necessary. Ask for your treatment plan and do some research. If it feel wrong it probably is.
@@tjj6362 You should not be afraid. My childhood dentist was honest and I knew that before entering the dental field. She wouldn't change an amalgam filling (silver) for a composite filling ( white filling) just because you prefer them and have insurance. She would say, I don't fix something that isn't broken. I also worked with dentist that have good morals. Some not so much but I think you can sense it as a client. If you have doubts, get a second opinion. Some procedures cost thousands of dollars and not necessary. When I was raising my children and not working, I had gone to see a dentist for tooth sensitivity caused by gingival recession, he suggested I get all my teeth crowned because my occlusion ( bite) was off. It would have cost around 30 thousand dollars. I walked out laughing. I am mid 40's and I can guarantee you I will have all my teeth in my 80's if I live that long.
I was told 2 years ago that I would need 16 fillings! I have healthy habits and was shocked to find that news out. After updating my dental insurance, I went in to a new office yesterday and to my surprise I now have “Three very TINY cavities.” I was also complimented on how good my teeth were considering I hadn’t ever gone to the dentist as frequently as recommended. I was very shocked. I might do a test of my own and see what the third person recommends
I'm a dentist who work in the border of Mexico-California, and I've seen a lot of cases like these. About two weeks ago, one patient came to me to probably do a root canal or maybe an extraction because a US. Dentist told her. I took a closer look and a x-ray and the problem was just one huge cavity, with no decay! And the nerve was very healthy, so I just made a white filling and voila! She even didn't need anesthesia because the nerve was to far away from the cavity and healthy. From original quote of $3500 from root canal, build up and crown, I just charge her a $65 regular filling. And she was very happy! 😀
man gland my mom is a honest dentist and that I have never had a cavity in my life. she has so many stories of people she use to work with ripping people off with things that they did not need or doing a poor job so you have to come again. tips for anyone that goes to a doctor or dentists always double check with a reliable source.
I will be getting my wisdom teeth removed and the doctor had me sit in an exam chair and quickly looked towards my mouth and charged us for having a full checkup. Nice hello, easy goodbye.
Yes they are! I had two different dentist work on my teeth, but both based in the same building. In my teens, my first dentist filled with silver. A couple years later, i needed to get them replaced. The second dentist that refilled my teeth was surprised to see me filled with silver and wondered who in the world would do this on my teeth. YOUR COWORKER!
I've had a dentist tell me I needed a small filling, I said sure, I'll book an appointment at the desk and walked out without one. 6 months later I'm back for a cleaning and no mention of that filling. Miraculously cured, I guess.
We do this a bit at the practice I work at. If it’s really not causing any issues and we know the patient prefers a conservative approach we’ll just make a note on their chart and monitor it at future checkups.
your tooth will be aching like hell if you needed a root canal, that means the nerve is pretty much messed up and needs to be removed. Any dentist telling you that a root canal is needed and you're not in pain is a huge scammer.
TruthTrader I have enormous amounts of pain on the left side of my mouth, top & bottom. I've had it for years and have started eating only on my right side. The left is no longer just sensitive it is full on pain 24/7. I go to the dentist Wednesday the 21st of Dec. I'm scared but the pain is too great to not go now. I can list the times I've been seen by a dentist, that's how few... 1. first/only visit in kindergarten, 2 cavities, left alone. 2. age 21, had all my wisdom teeth removed surgically. 3. had my back right molar pulled. Had a huge cavity, the tooth was crumbling and there wasn't enough surface area to bond a crown to after a rout canal. that's it. that is my life long dental experience. I've always loved my smile. The one area that I didn't feel ashamed of. Now, that too is going badly. I'm extremely irritable because of the pain. Now, I really don't feel like smiling. Would like to add: I had complete dental coverage all through my childhood. It just wasn't important enough to my parents. I LOVE them, but if you weren't bleeding (and badly at that!) then you were fine. As for the typical floride that is found in everyday drinking water, we had well water so there was no floride until age 8/9 and we moved and had city water and florife then. With the well water our pediatrician prescribed a daily floride rinse. But, it wasn't seen as needed and so we didn't get it. I'm not sure if it would have helped or not but it's too late now, I guess. As an adult, dental insurance was not affordable and so I did without. Paid for the wisdom teeth and molar removal in cash payments every month. Now that I've written a novel ... please pray, think good thoughts, send good vibes, wish me well, whatever it is you can muster for me, for next week. Hopefully, at least, the pain will be gone.
Depends on the root canal. I had to get a few done (I could feel or see the holes in my teeth so I knew it was real) but I was only in pain when something hit the inside of my tooth. it was more of an ache for me than constant unbearable pain. I'm lucky a couple of them didn't need to be pulled, since they were worried from my lack of pain that the nerves and teeth had died :/
i want to tell people here, this is not the case..for commenting like this u need to study dentistry..it is never like if u have pain then only u need rct.."no pain" can be a sign ur tooth is already necrosed/dead,and it still needs rct..believe me..otherwise infection will spread down in periapical region(down near end of root)..'m studying dentistry..trying not to cheat...as all of these people here are saying...even if i wil be hell honest throughout my life, still people are going to accuse people like us,may be bcz some dentists are actually corrupt or may be evry1 normally lacks awareness regarding dental health and dental science..!
My dentist is amazing! She only tells us what we need, no extras. Took many years to find a dentist like the one I have! I can't believe some people have to deal with this!
I am so incredibly glad I grew up with a good, honest dentist. I currently see both a prosthodontist and an oral surgeon for some needed work (I was born missing 12 adult teeth), and both barely touched on cosmetic things only AFTER my main concerns were addressed. And when I told them I wasn't interested, they dropped it immediately. There still are good people out there.
When I was younger before switching dentists, my dentist said I needed so many fills then when I got older the new dentist I had said, "You didn't need those."
+Tyler Walter I watch some of these and go, "Wow." They have one on here about fixing things and the plumbers who come to fix it. They set up basic problems and still some people say, "Oh you need this and this..." it is just pathetic.
When my wife and I got married, about a month afterward she went to a dentist that told her she needed $10,000 worth of work. She was in tears when she came home, mortified that she -- who wasn't working at this point -- was about to cost us so much. I told her it was okay and what needed to be done was what needed doing. She got about half the work done during a couple visits and I went over to meet her at the office. The guy's place was decked out with flat screen TVs in every office and all kinds of fancy expensive extras. That raised a red flag. But then between visits, the work he did crumbled in her mouth. We went to another dentist who fixed it then took a look at the rest and deemed it all unecessary. When we tried the records transferred from the $10K dentist, they oddly couldn't find them. Now she has an excellent dentist (I see him too) who will often postpone procedures he doesn't find urgent. However, now I find out kids' dentist a little suspicious. They were really, really insistent on giving our kids gas for a pulled tooth (Legit loose but not coming out while other tooth came in)... we declined because it's not safe or essential... then they've been really pushy about braces for both, even though both have very straight teeth. A couple years on and their teeth spacing seems to have worked out just fine, as confirmed by another orthodontist.
No joke, I used to work with a dentist who did this to people. He was only out to make a buck. Sure he cared about their health, but he'd purposely pick the most extreme method to deal with teeth problems just so he could make more money. If you are uncertain, always get a second or third opinion.
When I was 15, Western Dental told me they need pull all my wisdom teeth because they’ll grow in crooked. I said “No” and left. Now I’m an adult and all my wisdom teeth came in straight sigh no problems.
western dental yesterday told me I had 7 cavities, moderate gum disease, bone loss in my jaw and needed my wisdom teeth extracted (I'm 26). Oh, and they want me to enroll in their credit card program for the 4500 dollar cost of these procedures.
Ya I have one that came in straight and every dentist keeps pushing me to get it removed...but it doesn't bother me and it so far has no cavities so I don't see the point
@@NotTodaySatan557 it's not always about them bothering you ... it's also about getting back there with the toothbrush, floss and making sure you keep them clean. They recommend that too
I’m so lucky for my home-country being Mexico. My dentist there is a non-profit organization that aims to help people of low income and regularly attends to places like orphanages for free. I had my 4 wisdom teeth taken out, a deep cavity fixed, cleaning, and braces placed for about 200 dollars. They started out in a church and built a new clinic from donations. They truly care for the well-being of their patients.
I worked in a Dental insurance just resigned last month. If your dentist advised you to have basic/major works that will cost you a lot of money and you felt it wasn't necessary don't go for it right away find a 2nd opinion. And I highly advised to asked your dentist to send a pre-estimate/pre-determination to your insurance for you to know what would be your out of pocket and also Dental Insurance can determine if you really needed that procedure they have experts in the field, they will req. x-rays, charting, every info. to verify if that procedure is really needed. PS. Insurance will never pay even if you have a full coverage for the procedure if they found out that it is not necessary. Be wise choose your dentist.
The only issue is that the dentist can go in and purposefully ruin your tooth and then send that to the insurance to make it look as if it was necessary. I imagine they would not like you being in control and would want to one up you in their sick way.
I hate when dentists shame you for not coming in... it’s expensive! I have 2 dental insurances and it’s still expensive, My past dentist said I needed 14 fillings and a root canal for 3 teeth yet my new dentist said I have 3 small simple cavities.. So glad I found my new dentist he’s awesome
Sushi Arts . If a tooth needs come out it will come out by itself. Trying to save a tooth is to make your life miserable and spend money. Brush your teeth twice a day, and eat right, which means stop eating donughts cakes, pancakes, sodas, candies, and all these things with citric acid , fruit juices etc. You will never have a need to the dentist nor your chidren. Warms that's what give children cavities and adults. Every now and then treat yourself and your children for warms. Dentists causes more damage then goods, you don't see it until years down the line.
I like my dentist. I went in after not going to a dentist for 10 years because of bad experiences. He fills 2 small cavities, gives me prescription toothpaste to reverse some other damage, gives me tips on how to better take care of my teeth. After that, every time I go in, he looks at my teeth, smiles, says "No news is good news!" and sends me home. 👍
I once went to a dentist after 10 years since i did my last cleaning for another cleaning. I hardly rarely flossed and when they did an x-ray for my teeth, they claimed I had 3 small cavities beneath my gum line and urgently recommended me a drill and fill operation. I said let me think about it and I did my research that drilling would have to open new gaps just to fill in a tooth. I didn't like this extra bill. So i began to floss everyday as I was recommended and when I went to another cleaning some months later, they did not do an x-ray, but they said they found no indication of any cavity. Weird. So i would not call dentistry a standard practice and procedure. I say always do your research, find different opinions and do not rush things. Make comparisons of your x-ray to different dentist and learn how ro read your teeth x-rays to know if u have a real cavity or not. The dentist claimed i have none during my last visit.
I hate dentists. My perfect teeth is so messed up with so many unnecessary fillings and root canals. If u doubt what ur dentist says please seek another dentists advice

I was in the medical field for 8 years and plenty of people tried to shame our practice just because they werent happy with treatment, no one can force you to do any treatment, you have every option to walk away if you don't like it
Right
Medical Industry for the most part is a big SCAM filled with opportunists

Going to dentist is like going to auto mechanics. You are a target as soon as you walk in.

Lolz..... my dentist just said the same thing. He has to pull out my four teeth cause there is a hole in one wisdom teeth. I told him straight up, “better not touch my other three!!” I got a plan that cost About $4000.00 which am not going to even look at it. I only need to pull that one teeth out.
My dentist recommended to remove all wisdom teeth since i had cavities in 3 of them. He said in 6 months il be hurting. Its been 12 years and Im fine
That’s great! I wish that was my case! Mine grew in slanted and were such a pain! Finally got them out 🙌🏼
@Purple people In my head The surrounding teeth were breaking because you didn't have your wisdom teeth taken out and your jaw was too crowded. Not much wisdom on your part.
Wisdom teeth removal are the biggest scam on a worldwide scale. My dentist was super insisting in removing them but i thankfully knew the truth

Jude Fenwick It’s America.
There’s so much selection of a good quality reading glasses - here
we go, the “problem is fixed”.
I'm glad you followed Yogi's advice.

Makes no sense. Every dentist I've known had told me they the xray is nice, but nothing is diagnosed without a visual inspection.

If the dentist didn't make money how would you have had a job?
I had 2 teeth extracted from private dentist for £120 so how much profit made from that? And my scale and polish was £40 every 3 months.
terriesmith1981 U saw maybe 10 dentist who are greedy and u generalize all the millions of dentist around the world to be money greedy???? wow
That is the same with every business, u dont open a business to lose money do you?
The worst thing you can say to a greedy dentist is "I haven't been to a dentist in years!"
how about when one of these dentists cover bad teeth with caps , and wait for them to start with infection leading to implants
The same can be said for any privatized medical field. I've worked at many vet clinics as a Registered tech, and some clinics are really shady. End of the day it's a business. Shop around.
Not ethically right and the med community should fix this.
Steph K I’m 67 and I’ve seen our society evolve into such money hungry and dishonest practices in EVERY field of business. Mostly in the last 25 years. This is a sign of a third world society where everyone is taken advantage of and scams, insurance fraud and bribes are the norm.

Every time I hear that high pitched drilling noise I get goosebumps and my teeth start tingling. Not a kid anymore but still have this fear.
The United States is loaded with thieves.

man that old dentist expert lady was really the wrong person to ask. sure sounds like she's trying to defend the profession.
@Spenser Roger
Yeah, I found that really problematic.

Dental assistant here, a good way to stay safe is
1. Stay current on cleanings, know where your health is
2. Ask around, get a dentist other people have been satisfied with
This is really helpful. As a dental assistant, do you feel that Zocdoc is a reliable resource?
The Chopra one should be in jail, how did she even got to practice in Canada
they said a cleaning costs $500 that is outrageous.
Deep cleaning where they have to get around and beneath your gum can cost that much, plus you get shots for numbing. but regular cleaning should be around 150 dollar. at least in the US
joe S I pay 20 bucks for a deep cleaning hahahah
Ryan Griffith my cleaning is 30!
They said she required multiple cleanings which would total $500
It's called Scaling and Root Planning (SRP). The patient has periodontal disease and sub gingival calculus with excessive pocket depths, otherwise she wouldn't need a "deep cleaning" SRP. These are split into 2 appointments usually because it requires a lot of work/time to remove those deposits and usually requires anesthetic.
I love my dentist. I told him I wanted braces and he told me " don't waste your money on a slight over bite."I just go in to clean my teeth and have him check my teeth. 1 hr tops...covered by insurance.

I only went for cleaning very 6months and i had a pain in one tooth he said its from clenching teeth due to stress. Doesn’t even do x-ray and after a yr i got absences. He purposely wanted me to get expensive procedure -root canal and put onlay instead of crown and got abscess my right side face all swollen another root canal and wanted to put a crown this time. I got 3 cavity fillings after not having gone to the dentist for 6-8 years. Then 2 months later my dentist said I had developed 8 cavities. When she came to look at my dental pictures she just kept saying "omg ive never seen this before you developed 8 cavities".
One time she even told me that she will pay her daughter college tuition with me, because of all the cavities I had. Next thing you know after pretty much 6 months of back and forth. I go back to the dentist and there's a new doc. And went he got my charge, he told the assistant... i don't know why she had so much work to be done listed here. I don't see anything here.
I'm so lucky to be Finnish, no dentist competition as government pays dentists wages. Extra work or harder operations doesn't mean extra money.
welp I guess it's time for me to relocate to get good a good honest dental check up lol
BassBoostMadness I'm not sure what you mean? They have the choice whether to allow National Health Service patients or whether to allow private only?
***** Its all about humanity, but at least they aren't ripping off people by doing useless operations, I am far more concerned of that than going to dentist as pain occurs. Also if they don't do their job correctly e.g being lazy workers, we can straight up sue them. Wouldn't call it fail system
About 10 years ago,.I had a dentist tell me I had 4 cavities and needed 4 crowns and a night guard. I went to a recommended dentist from a relative and only had 1 cavity! Total cost $15.00!! I saved $3000
You shouldn't always trust relatives either.
the night guards at drugstore are juts as good for $20!
@Aaron Sochaczewski WHY ARE YOU ASSUMING THAT?
That doesn’t mean the first dentist was scamming you. Your second dentist may just have been more conservative and trying a wait and see approach while the first probably saw small cavities that he felt would inevitably get larger. For people with excellent hygiene, a more conservative approach may be fine. For people with poorer dental hygiene, a more aggressive approach could be good to fill the cavity before a root canal is necessary.
*Me as a dentist watching this* 👀
I don't think there should be "interpretation" in anything that involves my bones

Pepper Conchobhar same happened to me. I felt like the more I went to the dentist the more they told me was wrong. And I brush and floss regularly.
Ali Emad Well.....maybe those particular ones shouldn't be practicing, and some of the good ones should be regularly investigated......
Well, Dr. Emad, I hope you learned something here.
@Michael Tekle What do you mean, "so what?". I read it as a complete sentence.
Its very difficult to explain but I hope u understood my point
these are so good omg. Canadian shows are so good
I wish we had more Canadian shows.
You're lucky. British dentists ruined my teeth as a child by drilling unnecessarily.
@Shade Not my experience. Unfortunately! Perhaps you've heard otherwise? They all want to make big $$$.
I never went back.
went in to get a routine checkup told me I had 6k worth of work needed to be done!! I have great teeth said second opinion dentist...
The one woman just sounds like she doesn't want to speak out against another dentist. To me, drilling into a perfectly healthy tooth sounds like a very big deal!
It is
As a Dental Assistant I can tell you this is common practice.
So do dentists lie
@@tjj6362 Of course but there are honest dentists too.
@@pattydonna8549 omg! I didn't think they do. Thanks. Now I am not afraid
This show covers basically everything I ever wanted to know about haha. Canada is dope.
They are going the way of Europe. For such an open and free place. You'd think they'd like you know. Freedom and liberties more than they do
@She-li-a, Not dope, sick, or is it bad.
@Shelia - the situation is same everywhere, not only in Canada.
Good,👌
Im also a dentist
Good dentist!
What is your practice called🤗
Which clinic are you in? I'm thinking of going to Mexico for work
man gland my mom is a honest dentist and that I have never had a cavity in my life. she has so many stories of people she use to work with ripping people off with things that they did not need or doing a poor job so you have to come again. tips for anyone that goes to a doctor or dentists always double check with a reliable source.
I will be getting my wisdom teeth removed and the doctor had me sit in an exam chair and quickly looked towards my mouth and charged us for having a full checkup. Nice hello, easy goodbye.
Did you have X-rays taken?
I am curious too. They need an x-ray.
+Cole Hansen Kinda guessed.
Let me guess was he middle eastern?
WTF? Check up from my dentist is free when I had my wisdom tooth checkup for removal.
Right!!! 😅😅
Not necessarily. You can have a severely decayed tooth without pain.
BonBon Ignorant and quick to judge
My dentist is amazing! She only tells us what we need, no extras. Took many years to find a dentist like the one I have! I can't believe some people have to deal with this!
I am so incredibly glad I grew up with a good, honest dentist. I currently see both a prosthodontist and an oral surgeon for some needed work (I was born missing 12 adult teeth), and both barely touched on cosmetic things only AFTER my main concerns were addressed. And when I told them I wasn't interested, they dropped it immediately.
There still are good people out there.
Jessica P how was it like to not have 12 adult teeth?
Dentists have taken advantage of myself and my family many times over.
When I was younger before switching dentists, my dentist said I needed so many fills then when I got older the new dentist I had said, "You didn't need those."
Go to a big chain like aspen they won't do that
+Tyler Walter It still is pretty sad though in this day and age professionals do that 😧
+Shannon Catney I know I agree with that totally
+Tyler Walter I watch some of these and go, "Wow." They have one on here about fixing things and the plumbers who come to fix it. They set up basic problems and still some people say, "Oh you need this and this..." it is just pathetic.
This makes me wanna be a dentist to help people and keep them away from scammers.
That's why I became a dentist 😁
@@jeffmcknight4818 hey there would u mind doing me a favor
Cool, i was thinking it too
When my wife and I got married, about a month afterward she went to a dentist that told her she needed $10,000 worth of work.
I count myself lucky that my dentist is great and never pushing me to do things I don't need or want. Hope to keep her for many years to come!
They recommend that too
Wisdom teeth removal also causes long term bone loss and osteoporosis
@@eagwrevbrew43 but people dont know that 🤦🏽♂️ they think oral surgeons are tryna take their money
They need to move that logo off the screen cuz u can't read what they saying and some of those dentist need and should be sued.
The scariest scammers belong to the dental and medical industry, Imagine messing with a person's health for money.
This must be treated as a crime.
Not saying medical malpractice doesn't exist, but dentists are much worse scammers than doctors.
@@komfykoala6083 agreed.

I’m glad that I found a dentist that I trust. He’s a quiet man but he knows his teeth.
Boy that Professor could hardly come up with excuses fast enough. Just admit they were con men.
