"I thought I was making a healthier choice!"
If you want to make a "healthier choice" cook at home!
      Lol!
If you don't want to cook at home, than ingesting processed, less healthy foods is going to be that result.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with "splurging" once in a while, or having a "lazy day", or even being too busy to stop at home long enough to cook and eat *ONCE IN A WHILE.*
Doing this *ONCE IN A WHILE* isn't going to hurt you. It's when you do this kind of thing on a daily basis that you are looking at some negative health results.

I worked at Subway for over a year in high school. My manager allowed us to have one 6" sandwich for free if we worked more than 4 hours in one shift. I ate nearly everything on the menu, and even made my own creations. The one item I refused to touch was the chicken. The "oven roasted chicken" patties/strips came in a big clear bag that we stored in the freezer, put in the microwave to thaw, and then stored in a hotwell, where they stayed until someone bought them or we closed (usually the latter). Then we would have to either refrigerate them until the next day, or throw them out if they were reheated from the previous day. Proper temperature monitoring had to be done throughout the day of course. The only thing I liked about the chicken was that it was the easiest meat to prepare on a sandwich, but if someone asked me what to get, I would never recommend it. Absolutely disgusting that it was allowed to be sold like that, and the health department approved everything. We had a perfect score at the location I worked. I haven't had a Subway sandwich in years because of my experience working there.

What I loved the most was the meatballs. I'd just throw a bunch into a cup and eat them like that. No idea if these items still exist, I cannot bring myself to go to Subway.

Most likely they use freeze dried eggs turned into a powder form. The military used powdered eggs already in WW2 and was a common complaint in the MASH TV series.
It is a method to create a longer shelf life and also to make transport a lot easier. Powder batches are also easier to analyze in the lab and give it a grade. Many school lunches consist of grade C ingredients...

It is easier said than done though. When you have kids and a full-time job it's hard to care for the kids in the morning, work all day, go back to caring for the kids and make a big meal, clean up a big meal, take care of the kids some more, then drop and do it again the next day. Cooking often takes away the little time you have to relax, or be with your kids. Whereas I can buy Wendy's and be done with the entire transaction AND food in less than 5 minutes, with no clean up. I'm not saying it's right, I'm really trying to do exactly this, but I get why people try to ignore how bad it is just to not cook. It is 1,000% more effort, time and money to cook your own food. It's hard..

4:19 "Is it frozen or fresh?"
It is 100% frozen. I worked at Wendy's. There's not a piece of chicken that goes through those places that isn't frozen, it's not economical to store or transport them without freezing it. Now their beef, that's refrigerated but not actually frozen. All of the chicken is completely frozen though. And I'm not saying that to rag on Wendys, honestly I love their chicken. (Those homestyle chicken are AMAZING if you bake them. Couldn't tell from frying them but they have a subtle lemon flavor.) Just don't like it when people lie. To be fair I don't think the register person thought about it, I mean it's not like the chicken sits there forever. There's really high turnover for product. So it might have been in the freezer a few days or a week at the store itself, which all things considered I have things in my freezer far longer than that and it's just fine XD

I worked at Subway for a period. Food is typically taken out of the package or prepared about a day before, depends on how busy it gets. When the container that they have on display is running out, they take the container that had previously been prepared, take the old one out, put whatever is still in it over the new one, and put the new one in. If they dumped the new container over the old one, that was a big mistake on the staff's part. Depending on the rest of the staff and your manager, doing stuff like that can also get you in trouble.

True, but it does come with a hefty price tag. Artisan street food trucks are another option. Most are locals that are creating a handful of dishes with ingredients they usually buy daily at wholesale supermarkets.
On the other hand, it is not so bad if you visit a fast food restaurant every now and then (let's say 3 or 4 times a year). I know McDonald's hamburgers are not 100% beef, but my kids love their happy meals and have real fresh food on weekdays. Saturday is our guilty pleasure day (fast food or pizza) and on sunday we pick-up a takeout order from a restaurant.

Everything is artificial. The chicken strips at Subway are literally just like the oven roasted chicken. Just chopped smaller. It's called marketing. That's how they get business.

As SOON as I started to watch this, I guessed Subway would be the worst. My reason for that is because Subway was caught in the past, selling their multigrain buns, which were in fact, white bread with maple food colouring! So they have a history of this sort of crap. I stopped eating there when I learned that. Put it all together and Subway is one crooked business! I would have liked to hear the results for McDonalds, as my wife and I love their chicken. I am happy about Wendy's as my wife and I eat there. But, we rarely eat out, so honestly, it isn't as big an issue for us. We tend to make our own food at home, and I am glad we do now.

      Mr. Sleepy
No matter what you are testing, if your _process_ is flawed your results will be as well; if this had been a company testing a product officially, the results would have been thrown out. If they wanted to actually test this properly they should have had them all in separate rooms (or at very least had them save the chatter for the end so they didn't influence one another and a sheet to put notes on) giving the chicken in random order for _each_ person (put them on identical paper plates with the label on the underside so you know which is which).

    • @johnfrancisdoe1563
      @johnfrancisdoe1563 6 лет назад

KyleCorbeau Even more important: Noone in the room is allowed to know which is which, and the letter assignment/ordering must be randomized with completely even odds.

I mean, I would naturally assume what I'm getting is the real deal. I work at a sandwich place now for another larger chain. From what I know being there, all the product is fresh. The meat is sliced daily, we get a supplier that brings in the vegetables, the only real thing that isn't is the bread, condiments (mustard(s) and mayo and possibly oil+vinegar) and cookies. The bread is frozen dough, but gets thawed out, stretched and then baked in the oven. The cookies are pre-made, frozen and let to thaw out. Basically everything for a sandwich is fresh and real from what I personally know and I'm in the US.

So Wendy's doesn't have sodium phosphate in their meat ingredients lists, and as that scientist showed that's mostly used so food can retain moisture when frozen - when he mixed it up we saw it got kind of gelatinous. Wendy's marketing says "fresh not frozen" so I guess there's some truth in advertising, sometimes?

I work for Wendy's, and I'm the grill opener for the store I work at. I know our grilled chicken is real, as well as our homestyle, and spicy. Sometimes the texture of the grilled isn't the greatest, but keep in mind that not all chickens are the same. Its not the taste, but the size of the fillet, or some of the connective tissue that doesn't get removed during processing. BUT, it is real chicken with seasonings.

Eating out is or at least was fairly common in the USA and that is because it was rather cheap and obviously much easier than meal prepping at home. I've heard from several Americans that the portion sizes are advantageous because you would often go home with leftovers and fast food was quite cheap. You could eat a hearty meal for anywhere between 5 and 10 bucks. Prices for fast food in the USA are often even half the price they are in, say, Europe. It's also a cultural thing. Having dinner together or just cooking itself is much more common in other countries around the world because meals are not necessarily seen as a necessity but rather as an opportunity to come together with friends and family and to go over everyone's day and talk about what happened.

Either100% or only occasionally when they think they have to for convenience. At times I'm tempted but what usually stops is knowing I can avoid all the chemicals they have to use and saving money. Sonic will cost me $7-$8 for a burger and a drink and that is double or more than the ingredients would cost me and I avoid the chemicals.
